It's sad. Things were looking up for Russia when they got corruption and mobsters somewhat under control. Until Putin decided he could do what the mafia did, only better and at a larger scale. This war is just the last in a long downward spiral driven by a government that serves itself rather than the people. I used to visit Russia a lot before, and it's a nice place with good people. The Russian soldiers, on the whole, are not evil, they are deluded individuals enticed to fight under false pretense, or forced to. Over half a million lives ruined, and for what? A sad little man's delusions of grandeur.
For Ukraine's sake, I hope for a decisive victory for them. For Russia's sake, I hope that they come to their senses and push for a speedy withdrawal either ordered by Putin or despite him.

9/6/202 Fortune: The central bank released a survey that showed a quarter of Russian exporters had trouble with foreign counterparts, including blocked or returned payments even when dealing in supposedly friendly countries. And about half of exporters said the problems got worse in the second quarter from the prior quarter.
The overall Russian economy has been propped up by the government's wartime spending as well as oil exports to China and India. But the combination of busy factories and labor shortages due to military mobilizations have stoked more inflation.
Researchers led by Yale's Jeffrey Sonnenfeld warned the seemingly robust GDP data mask deeper problems in the economy.
"Simply put, Putin’s administration has prioritized military production over all else in the economy, at substantial cost," they wrote. "While the defense industry expands, Russian consumers are increasingly burdened with debt, potentially setting the stage for a looming crisis. The excessive focus on military spending is crowding out productive investments in other sectors of the economy, stifling long-term growth prospects and innovation."

One of the lessons of this war is that while the US help is crucial in Ukraine, that its also true that Europe is too beholden to the US to military action. We need to rebuild our own armed forces so we can act more independently. That will take years though. The US has other theatres its interested in like Asia and the Middle East. Europe is also exporting too much of what it does produce outside of Europe. This will require European governments to tell some uncomfortable truths to taxpayers that defence is going to compete for funding.

Europe should definitely do what Poland, Lithuania and Sweden are doing with their military policies and investments. You have to remember that the US still has several bases in Europe.
Also, It is somewhat of a win-win situation with the US aid packages and Ukraine. Whilst the US isn't in the theatre, most of the aid packages are refurbishments of obsolete equipments and techs while investing in national (US) next-gen tech and equipments. Ukraine benefits from these aid packages and the US can focus on building yheir doctrines and their next-gen equipment towards a perceived future enemy. What I do not understand is the restraints put on the usage of said aid packages (F16 in Ukraine only, HiMARS at max 300 km, no ballistic missiles in Russia...)

Looks like some interviewed stated pro-Russian narratives about the worthlessness of, in reality, extremely successful Kursk operation. Its success has been praised by prominent military authorities such as US general Ben Hodges and many others. Ukrainian commander-in-chief Syrskiy recently stated that Russian advances have been stopped in Pokrovsk direction and during last 6 days they did not gain any inch of Ukrainian soil; moreover, it is Ukrainians who have some territorial gains in some places. Also, it is now a known fact that Russians did redeploy some 60 thousand troops from that location to Kursk which was one of the objectives of the Kursk operation. Everything goes by Ukraine’s plans.
