Many years ago, I heard a story similar to one in this video from a Hungarian woman who had been a young teenager in Budapest during WWII. She said that her city had been occupied three different times during the war, and that of all the occupiers, the Russians were the worst. I was astonished, and I asked, "Worse than the Nazis?" And she answered, "Much worse than the Nazis. The Russians were barbarians. My sisters and I had to stay hidden in our house to keep from being raped. When we were occupied by the Germans everything was peaceful and orderly. I know the Nazis did terrible things to the Jews, but in regard to everything that I experienced there was normal law and order under German occupation."
The quotation I just gave is actually a paraphrase, because this conversation was held many years ago, and obviously I can't remember her exact words. Nevertheless, this was the gist of what she said, and she was very emphatic about it. After the war, during the late 40s and the 50s, she had lived under communist rule in Hungary and was in Budapest when the Russians came back to suppress the Hungarian revolt. After that, she escaped Hungary and came to the United States. She deeply despised the Russian people as a consequence of her experiences.

It was the American led allies that at the end of WW2 agreed Russia should be the „liberators“ of Berlin considering of the many thousands of Soviet deaths suffered. The responsibility of the surrender process in germany was divided up between the Soviets, the French, British and Americans.
Germans that experienced that time told me that they were scared stiff of it being the Russians. The stories of their brutality, rapes, pillaging etc had been told ahead of them.

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 15 днів тому +76

My dad rolled through Germany in the spring of 1945 with the Third Armored Division, and when German townsfolk saw the U.S. tank columns, they ran from their houses cheering. They were all quite vocal that they were terrified of Russian troops. Now, make no mistake, there were atrocities even from American GIs, but the difference was that if the GI was caught, they would be court martialed and imprisoned whereas the Russians considered rape and pillaging part of their compensation.

My father was in the Italian campaign, starting at Taranto in the south, and working their way north. By the end of the war, they had crossed the border into Austria. What the British troops found was that the Russians had already passed through. Everything had been stolen, even the knobs on the doors. And every woman and girl in the country had been raped. This was a revenge thing for the Russians - you humiliate the defeated enemy by humiliating his women. It's a nasty nasty attitude. The British troops, by contrast, behaved themselves - as the Ukrainians are in Kursk right now.

The Golden Horde occupied what we call Russia for about 250-300 years (~1240 to ~1500 AD). Their rule was essentially, do things our way or die. Moskov was an obscure village, founded in 1147 on a river which may or may not have been settled by Vikings in their longships.
Moskov enthusiastically adopted the Horde's edict - indeed, what choice did they have? As a reward, the Horde gave Moskov dominion over near-by settlements. But more than that, Moskov adopted the Horde's way of doing things. So began the Russian nation. And to this day, Russians have preserved the Golden Horde's way of doing things. Lest you be confused, that village, Moskov, is known in the English speaking world as Moscow.

When we arrived in Canada from the UK we settled in Alberta in the west . It was not long before we found that a large number of the people there were from the Ukraine . Two landlords and a young guy we befriended filled us in on the various migration of Ukrainians due to the common purges by Russia . A very productive group in that part of the Canadian west .

One other fact that Russia/Putin keeps silent about is the Ribbentrop - Molotov pact, in which the Soviets agreed with the Nazis to attack Poland; first Nazi-Deutschland from the west and then the Soviet Union two weeks later from the east. So, the Soviet Union had an active/attacking role in starting WW II.

“Moral Clarity” covering Russia’s war on Ukraine and its people is the very definition of Jake Bro. He is reliable and not immune to this reporting as he does show emotion which makes him a fighter for Ukraine. I love Jake’s synopsis here on Russia as I studied WW2 myself and my father was deployed overseas in the Pacific. He is right on regarding the Monguls. Their moral claim was that we will keep our word and they did regardless of the ethical issues. Though a different front, my father did say that many in the army wanted to continue to Russia because of their flipping loyalties from Axis to Allie’s. Jake relays a consistent message. “The Russians are the worse” as relayed from someone experiencing many aggressions during her long life.

During World War II, the United States provided significant aid to the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease program. This program, initiated in March 1941, allowed the U.S. to supply its allies with essential war materials. The aid to the Soviet Union included:
    400,000 jeeps and trucks
    14,000 airplanes
    8,000 tractors
    13,000 tanks
    1.5 million blankets
15 million pairs of army boots
    107,000 tons of cotton
2.7 million tons of petroleum products
    4.5 million tons of food
The total value of the aid was approximately $11.3 billion at the time, which is equivalent to about $180 billion today123. This support was crucial for the Soviet Union’s war effort against Nazi Germany.
