    Putin must never be allowed to walk away from his war crimes. No sanctions should ever be lifted till he's either dead or handed over for war crimes, and on top of that, democracy must be restored in Russia and a agreement reached that war reparations be paid to Ukraine. Also an agreement made that independent overseers be present to ensure future Elections be fair and legit...

      despite me being an avid democrat, i dont think russia will be able to become a true democracy like a lot of european countries have for example. the country is very large and her people dont have a democratic ideology. Its going to take decades to even build that up. I do want a good attempt to be made and we should guide them in that transformation, but it mostly up to them.

    Russia's budget for 2025 is based on a price of oil at 70 US dollars per barrel of oil. Since oil exports represent 40% of the budget revenue, just a small dip in the estimated price per barrel will throw the budget into chaos.

    Europe can't just rely on sanctions. They need to help Ukraine target and reach critical infrastructure like cargo shipping and factories. Make it so that Russia has nothing to export.

      For one thing, Europe just doesn't have enough of such weaponry, most of what the Ukrainians could have used and we really don't need has already been sent. For another, you underestimate the scale of even the abysmally dysfunct Russian economy. They probably have thousands of cargo ships and factories. No way no how you can destroy even a significant portion of this stuff with cruise missiles. Only way would be big and cheap bombs dropped from planes and that ain't happening for all sorts of reasons.

      Yes, but the one thing Russia does have is a capable submarine fleet, and Russia might target critical infrastructure in the European country. However, they haven't done anything to the UK.
      I do think it's military is near collapse, but I also wonder what a state like Russia might do with all those subs

      The World bank just said Russia is doing great 3.6% growth in 2023.

      @@s0ycapitan That shows no understanding of what is happening. All of the growth is the Russian government purchasing weapons for the 3 day SMO in Ukraine. Two problems:
      (1) You cannot eat a tank or drink a rifle;
      (2) Only lasts until you run out of money. The liquid part of the National Wealth Fund runs out of money end of 2025.
      End of 2025 Russia is in deep trouble.

They are dictating what the ruble is worth in a closed economy, doesn't mean it is going good. Lost to Britain and France in 1856, lost to Japan in 1905, lost to Germany/AH in 1917, lost to the Poles in 1920, only survived WW2 with massive Western economic aid (including food and trains), lost to the Taliban in 1989. Freed the serfs after Crimean War, introduced the Duma after Russo-Japanese War, had a Bolshevik coup and civil war after losing WW1, Soviet Union collapsed after losing to the Taliban. Great track record for a 'major power' (good thing you didn't say super power).

    He's backing up everything I have been able to glean from sources on the subject of Russia's economy. The Ruble has been dropping in value month on month since the beginning of 2024 and is now at 97.6 against the Dollar. It's literally not worth the paper it's printed on .

    Excellent guest and interview. He's a legend and was essential reading when I was a student in the '90's. It's the first time I've seen or heard him and it was like his writing with such clear clarity.
    Kate could take some tips for decor from this man. That threadbare map stuck on the wall with bluetack isn't a match for Anders' oak panelling and artworks.

    Financial is hurts, mote and more. But in Russia there is lack off workforce, so roads aren't repaired, water heating stop working etc etc That will really hurt.

You can see videos of ppl from distant villages boasting about how they can live with no tap water or electricity and the corrupted lazy west would not be able to.
