Exactly, most people would think that if your blind, u miss out on everything the world has to offer, but what this one video proves is that the world is what u make it(literally in this case) and that u can make the world with your own senses and imagination 😊
The moment you rewatch the video and realize at the very beginning the hint was right there all along as she was walking on one of those altered sidewalk textures for the blind to navigate the streets.
This animation is so cute. One of my favorites now. When she first hit the fence, I wondered why she didn't just immediately notice the hole and climb through it. Children normally do in things like this. Then she ducked down and carefully felt along it, staring blankly the entire time, and it clicked. It became instantly obvious to me she was a blind child who'd just lost her seeing-eye dog. It was so much fun to see her discover the world as she went along, with her "magic wand". Gogo is such a good dog. As long as she has him, she'll be okay.
@@Nicole-bj4dv It actually sounded like Coco to me, too, on the first pass! But it specifically calls the dog Gogo in the credits, and if I remember right from the other comments, calling a dog Gogo is basically like an American saying "doggy". I could also clearly hear Gogo when I rewatched it and was listening more closely. Part of hearing is actually what our brains expect to hear, and they'll autocorrect, sometimes to really weird things, when what we hear doesn't quite match with the words we know.
As soon as I found out she was blind I was so worried that she was going to walk out onto the street or something. This really warmed my heart, glad it didn't end like that

Can artists these days just get some fucking recognition for their work without being relentlessly compared to fucking Studio Ghibli and without people just going “oh it’s like Ponyo” every time there’s a cute main character?! It’s so goddamn insulting to all the hard work and passion they put in to something unique and special.
@@dildonius How can an honest reaction like that be insulting? If that's what they feel, I think its fine. There's no reason that being compared to ghibli should be insulting. Its short-sighted, and very surface-level, but that's what you're going to get from 99% of the people who view this kind of content, people who aren't really looking that far into things. Just look at the Oscars. I don't think its insulting when, despite the efforts put in, others don't care enough to notice or highlight the nuance. If anything, its just apparent that people gloss over the details in general unless its a subject that they're particularly passionate about. I can't tell one sports-ball player from another, and I think that's a fair exchange. No direct attack was made. Its not like this work was admonished or called a clone or anything. Regardless, I think OP is completely off. I don't get a ghibli vibe from this at all.
@@dildonius if I was a student making an animation and they compare me to Ghibli... Hell, I'd be honored. It's like they tell you you are very talented... I don't even see what's wrong with that. You need to chill, or buy a boxing bag and punch it.
+Kim Arundale Seriously? How can you see the scene where she is touching the sides of the hole in the fence before going through it without catching that? Sorry, I don't mean to be belittling or anything, I am just genuinely unable to grasp how anyone could not get it with that scene.
***** Because she's obviously afraid to enter, as any child - blind or not - would be. They didn't make it blatantly obvious. To me, she was a scared little girl dipping her toe in the metaphorical ocean. Because the animation was done in such a way that showed everything around her until she went through the hole, it made it seem like she was entering a magical place or playing a game while finding her dog. The short was supposed to drop hints, but I believe they did not want to make it blatantly obvious because a blind girl walking through her own little world is similar to any child walking through the world playing pretend. THAT is why I didn't picture her blind throughout the short. 😒
Kim Arundale I don't know, maybe it is because my sister works with children with disabilities and I have interacted with a lot of her deaf friends, but I caught on instantly when she didn't actually look at the hole and the way she traced the edges with her fingers. If I went in to explaining the reasons why the way she touched the edges of the hole were so distinctive, it would sound belittling again. (really not my intention.) I guess though that anyone who knows she is blind now can tell what I saw the first time when they watch that scene again.
***** Exactly. You don't know unless you are experienced in determining such things. Just the other day, a blind man got on the same bus as me with his service dog. I didn't see him while he got on, but I saw him find a seat and sit (which was difficult because no one would get up for him). I didn't realize he was blind til I spoke with him at our final stop in Chicago. I assumed his service dog was for a disability, but I didn't know which one til I spoke to him and he had his eyes closed and didn't look my way. If someone is blind all their life, they usually are pretty good at getting around fairly normally. He seemed to move well, but in the big city of Chicago I understand why he would want a seeing eye dog instead of a walking stick.
Mack Ayache Did you not read the comments where I explain in detail the way I viewed this short story? Based on your comment, I'm guessing you didn't. People don't understand that the beauty of art is that it can be seen in many ways. In no way did this story "depend" on you knowing she was blind the entire time, as I show in a previous comment.
Razzle Dazzle - maybe the artist who drew this cartoon did not watch Kiki's delivery service cartoon and therefore couldn't be accussed of plegarism Ok fair point We can comment on it since we watched Studio Gibli's Kiki ...

Travel through the open darkness, A canvas to paint no less, Here she is without an aid, To explore the world upon her visage. And where she trail to greater hue, All imagine, so small, not view. What little that shroud her sight? When all the colors within such might.
It has been 11 years since the upload, and I'm glad that I still have found this today. Of all short videos I've seen on UA-cam, this is my most favourite and loved.
my problem was who let a blind child wander on her own, i know she has a dog, but still and people just walked passed this child bumping into things and calling for her dog, other tha that it's very very pretty ad a nice animation
Blind people must have a beautiful vision of their own about things.. they SEE things differently!! And surely with a beautiful approach than people who can see...
+Namrata Panjre unfortunately, an originally blind person do not see anything. They cannot even see black (seriously). Only to those who had their eyesight before can imagine this.
A very good example of empathetic media, which I love. The kind of stories/music/etc. which attempt to make you feel the emotions/worldview of the characters/concepts more viscerally than just showing them to you. This short shows us how a blind girl might “see” and experience the world around her; we are left with the same clues she is- the sounds, smells, and feelings- and are forced to make our own conclusions about her world just as if we too were blind. In that way, it tries to impart sone small aspect of what it is like to be blind. Another great example imo would be the song Bach (Again), in which a choir sings firstly a Bach chorale entitled “Come Sweet Death”, before repeating the chorale, but each singer sings at their own pace as they see fit, not following the tempo of any other singer nor the conductor. The result is an eery and elongated, stretching sound which slowly settles into a warm and fading final chord. Imo, it evokes in the listener the feeling of dying; time slowing to a standstill, colors blending and melting together, and finally fading away with a final release. I’m fascinated by this “empathetic media” I’d call it. I know I have seen other examples but can’t recall any right now. Anyone else know of any?
You should close your eyes when playing this, and then you get to imagine what the sounds would be like in your perspective! That would actually be interesting! X)
I like how the low gurgle of an old bus sounds like a big fish to her or a low soaring plane sounds similar to whale noises. Such an imaginative kid; I’m glad I watched this ❤️
Hey. Someone stole your work and your video. “How a blind girl sees the world” animation” they just renamed it and didn’t give you any credit. This video is great and I HATE it when people don’t give the original artist credit.
Well, the guy wouldn’t know she was blind just from looking at her. Could have been a normal girl walking her dog and not being aware of surroundings. Also it looked to be Japan inspired (In the beginning she was walking on special sidewalks for blind people to navigate) and it’s not uncommon in Japan for kids to walk alone. Maybe not that young but regardless
Everytime I see this, I cry a lot. It's so beautiful and full of positive feelings, it gives me hope. It makes me feel truly happy to know that in this world there are people who can think and make stuff like this.
My nephews LOVE this animation, I discovered it some years ago and I show them when they were very little. Is fantastic watching them grow while learn about how others "seen" the world, also is so cute hear them yell "Coco" (that's how we understand the dog's name) at the screen every time they watch it. Amazing job, draws and story, thank you so much for make this and show it to the world!!
Very inspiring and creative work. It made me sad once I realized that the girl was blind, but at least the world she envisions is more beautiful than what we could ever accomplish in reality :)
If you love this, try out Beyond Eyes... It's an almost identical animation and style, similar plot (she is also blind, and you've got to move around to see more around you, but touch something scary and it can get really dark) and a brand new game for 2015. I don't really think it's truly a "game" but more a journey you're experiencing...
This entire piece reminds me of Studio Ghibli. Not only is this animation and coloring divine in how smooth and beautiful it was, but it was able to convey so many unique and well designed aspects that help tell the story of this one moment in that little girl's life. The flow was so well done, giving the viewer enough time to not only understand how the girl sees, but the process in which she does it. Not only that, but just the imagination put behind the visuals her mind creates, keeping in consideration her age and how the mind of a youth works, was beautifully executed. Even the designs of the characters themselves reflect so much on how Ghibli would have done it. The girl is simple in her design as well as cute and innocent. You can just tell from the very second her and her dog show up exactly who she is. The music is also very well done, keeping in pace with the story while also changing and shifting with not only the scene in front of us, but with how the girls mind perceives the world around her. These are amazing qualities to have, and though this animation is now nine years old, its execution from all areas makes it so this little short film is essentially timeless. I can see people ten years from now stumbling upon this piece and being able to enjoy it to the fullness of those who watched it the day it was released. Simply beautiful work
not to be rude or anything, but how did people not know she was blind throughout the entire video? The whole entire film's plot was about how she was blind and had to use her imagination and other senses to get around town!
Her imagination is why people probably thought she wasn't blind. She once at least knew what stuff looked like. People who are actually blind couldn't imagine like that. So she lost her sight, wasn't born blind it seems. I was first confused too because she made up a world she shouldn't have been able to make up, it's really sad though that she had to lose her sight...
Cantimule dude I didn't catch on until the dog came back and she was looking the wrong way and didn't know what she was holding until she started touching it! I thought it was about the girl finding a magic portal like in My Neighbor Totoro
At some point, I was thinking "Maybe it's called Out Of Sight because her imagination stops her from seeing the messed up stuff going on around her. Out of sight, out of mind. Wait... Maybe she can't see." Right then, the cat showed up & she was clearly not looking at it.
I'm seeing a lot of inspiration drawn from Miyazaki's films. Specifically Spirited Away and Totoro. It was really beautiful. Well done! (Anyone else feel a sudden pang of sadness and shock when you realized that she was blind? It took me till the lady walked out of the bakery to realize it.)
The question wasn't about her knowing what stuff is. It was about her knowing what stuff looks like. Touch something won't tell you what something looks like unless you've seen it before. Still, I'd go with the idea that she used to be able to see.
+Kewyn You do realize that touch can't tell you what a color is, or how it looks.... plus touching something won't tell you exactly how it looks. of corse it probably depends on the item
I always love it when I find myself in that part of UA-cam full of student short films. It's nice.

I don't get a ghibli vibe from this at all.
ikr! especially with they flying whale scene, it's just like those war machines from Howls Moving Castle!
Glad I'm not the only one lol, some of the inspirations are pretty clear
@@dildonius if I was a student making an animation and they compare me to Ghibli... Hell, I'd be honored. It's like they tell you you are very talented... I don't even see what's wrong with that. You need to chill, or buy a boxing bag and punch it.
The Girl reminds me of Ponyo!

So if you cannot see black, what colour do blind people see?
Keineth 14 sad and tragic. But i wonder what vision their minds must be creating . Im sure it must be beautiful.!!
+Fiona Lee (OODIEDOODLE) OMG, that would be so cool to capture in an animation! Like a surreal piece!
Tasia Boldyreva They see nothing, which, I guess is black, since it’s the absence of light (correct me if I’m wrong)
I DID NOT DESERVE THESE FEELS TODAY.
Lol
You should close your eyes when playing this, and then you get to imagine what the sounds would be like in your perspective! That would actually be interesting! X)
Creative title, concept and visuals. The story is intelligent, heart-warming and innocent. This is honestly what the anime industry needs more of.

SeriouslyNotNormal and I wonder why is she in the streets alone? For a four year old
Well, the guy wouldn’t know she was blind just from looking at her. Could have been a normal girl walking her dog and not being aware of surroundings.
Also it looked to be Japan inspired (In the beginning she was walking on special sidewalks for blind people to navigate) and it’s not uncommon in Japan for kids to walk alone.

I have watched this 6 or 7 times now. No shame, this is one of my favourite pieces of animation, I have ever had the pleasure of encountering.
Joe, thanks for posting this. I really like it. Is the creator a disciple of Hayao Miyazaki, do you know?
not really sure but I can see the influences
It took me until about halfway through for that to click.

Oooh now I see. It’s about a blind girl that was finding her dog. She is in a imaginary world base on her senses.
It’s is so cute!
wait... she's blind now, but she does know what all these various things look like.. doesn't that mean she lost her sight recently? ;;"
oh shit that makes a lot of sense
maby
Maybe that's why some things she touches are imaginary and others are realistic. Losing sight at a young age, so she has a small frame of reference.
The question wasn't about her knowing what stuff is. It was about her knowing what stuff looks like. Touch something won't tell you what something looks like unless you've seen it before. Still, I'd go with the idea that she used to be able to see.
+Kewyn
You do realize that touch can't tell you what a color is, or how it looks....
plus touching something won't tell you exactly how it looks.
of corse it probably depends on the item
