  • Let’s Eat is a 8 minute animated short film that centers on the relationship between a mother and daughter in a Chinese-American immigrant family. Let’s Eat strives to be a universal story told through a distinctly Asian-American voice.
As a single parent in an unfamiliar country, Ma’s entire life centers around raising Luan, her rambunctious young daughter. Likewise, Luan spends her childhood indulging in endless quality time with her playful, loving mother. However, as Luan grows up, it isn’t long before daily life interferes and causes mother and daughter to grow apart. By channeling their feelings into cooking, the two strive to find their way back to each other, one homemade meal at a time.
Ma and Luan’s tale touches upon mother-daughter relationships, the American immigrant experience, and the unspoken translation of love into food - familiar themes reflected through a fresh perspective often overlooked in mainstream media. We at Anamon Studios aim to share in our similarities as much as we celebrate our differences, and to this end we hope that Let’s Eat will resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and experiences.

For those who want the lyrics:
    (Verse 1)
I hold your laughter safe inside in my mind
Sweet moments captured so I can rewind
I’ll always have them so anywhere I fly
I know you’ll be by my side
    (Verse 2)
You lift me up when I am feeling small
Up on your shoulders I become so tall
And though you raise me high above it all
I have no doubt that you’ll catch me if I fall
    (Chorus 1)
    You give me everything
You see the best in me
    No matter where you go
    You’ll come back home
    (Verse 3)
I’m only learning to say what’s in my heart
So when you’re hurting I don’t know where to start
And though the words are often hard to find
We still have time to make things right
    (Chorus 2)
    You give me everything
You see the best in me
    No matter where I go
    I’ll come back home

We always think when we are younger, that we will have our parents forever. But unfortunately, they don't. This is why I always say: CHILDREN - Love your parents! Spend every single moment that you can WITH THEM, because once they are gone, They Are GONE! For those of us who no longer have our parents, regret all the moments that we didn't!

I’m raising my teen granddaughters their mom is my daughter. They see her on weekends but it’s not the best situation. Drugs & domestic violence took them out of the home and kept them out. My daughter & her husband live no electricity no water they have wood stove & carry water from my home ( not as much mine since we live a distance) or others that let them. The 14 yr old will not join into any kind of activity Because she’s afraid she won’t get to see her mom on a weekend. Breaks my heart

Im...actually crying. My mother and I also used to be besties when I was little. But as time went on, we argued more and more often. Yesterday, we had a terrible argument. Angrily, I took my ipad and locked myself in my room. As I was watching short films, I suddenly saw this one. The more I watched, the more I regretted everything. After I watched it, I ran straight down to my mum and gave her a hug. Thanks for this wonderful work.❤

I miss being his mom. I miss him. But I’m glad for memories like this. It’s good to remember those loving close times, even and especially when it’s difficult. I wish he had had time to be a dad like he wanted to. He would have been a good one.

So touched by this short film. To anyone who didn’t get it. Food in Asian culture takes front and center in almost every home. It’s what connects them to each other. It is love in action- prepping the food for a loved one, sharing / eating the food together, it’s comfort. Some of the best memories at home happened in the kitchen- food sustains us physically, connection feeds our soul. Thank you for making it!

I've heard so many people say, "My mother's way of saying 'I love you' was 'Have you eaten?'" And I get that. My mom regularly told her children that she loved them, and she gave them hugs even when we were prickly teenagers, but one of her love languages was cooking -- and she was a wonderful cook who would feed anyone who came to her door, anyone who needed to eat and unwind, anyone who needed a meal. She cooked for her own family, for new mothers and people just home from the hospital, for mourners when a loved one had died.
She died in August 2020, during the pandemic, and because it wasn't safe, none of her sisters attended her funeral. I sometimes wonder what she would have thought about that. It's fortunate that she'll never know.

I grew up in an Asian household and my mom constantly talked about the food she cooked or ate and me and my sister would always tease her but now that I look back I realize how much these meals meant to her. They weren’t just for the food it was a time for us to bond, laugh, talk and be a family so when she got the divorce and we all stopped having family meals I saw her heart shatter. She just wanted us to all be happy over the hard worked meals she would spend hours making. This short hurts me and makes me realize how much I wish I could go back in time and tell her how much I appreciated all of it.

I miss my mom even more. Growing in a poor family, I grew up to be ambitious and determined to live a better life than what my parents could afford. Ever since, their love language is service, they are always one step ahead of my needs. After college, I grew more and more apart from my parents since I was already able to support myself. But with the pandemic, my life slowed down. I was at home most of the time with them and I was able to catch up. Little did I know, the days I had with my mom were already counted and those times I am at home are the last chance I got to spend with her. I lost her few months ago and I miss her everyday since. 💔

This story also illustrates that many children of immigrant parents no longer speak their native language. The mother speaks to her in Chinese, but she is always speaking English instead. Then her child speaks English too. It is actually quite sad to see native tongues disappear throughout the generations and this happens very often. It seems like not many are interested in learning it or recovering the language and being bilingual and become culture-washed.

Why do you learn a language? So someone else understands you.
I don't think people do it with ill intent. People do it to survive. You need to learn another language to survive. And if you don't have the luxury of speaking with someone from back home all the time to keep using that language often or the time to teach your child a language that they will not need much if at all any more then you let them learn the language that will help them make friends, get a job, etc in the new country you are both in.
I am not saying it isn't a bit sad. But adapting is more important than 'keeping the culture intact and nothing to taint it, blah blah'. If they had lived a horrible life with little food because they couldn't adapt, then maybe there wouldn't be the next, and next generation at all. (Although that's a bit extreme...it really depends where one moves)
Basically, all I am saying is: Living, being happy and comfortable enough to give birth to a new generation is important too. And if you want your children to speak that language too, if you can, sure, do it. But if they can't, then what? then just don't move away? But most of them don't move just because they're bored of the country they were born in. Let's be serious.
Also, I am sorry for this whole rant, I am tired, had 3 coffees, and a bad day. Hope I didn't offend you in any way. This is my opinion. Yours can be different. And I wish you a good day.

Tbh, I think this may be an issue in USA, but I don't see it happening in Europe. We tend to speak more languages, even if we don't use them daily to communicate, it has a cultural value to learn new languages. I, for example, speak Spanish, english, italian, little portuguese, little french and also japanese, in addition I speak two local languages from Spain. Many other european countries promote learning their own language + english + a third language. And many immigrant kids speak their native + new country language + english. Its so common and I think its really good to speak more than just one, you learn a lot! 😊

The last moment of the daughter giving her mom chicken soup hot a different perspective before.
I've heard the saying, "the parent should take care of the child at the beginning of their life and the child should take care of the parent at the end of theirs"
Only it's hard to tolerate some of my grandparents because of how grumpy and irritable they can be.
For some reason, this film put it in perspective:
As a kid, they had to tolerate my behavior because I was still developing. As they're elderly, I should understand that they're regressing.
But they're not just related to me, they're family

You are not alone. I have never had a good relationship with my mom either. I remember many hurtful moments of her abusing me physically and emotionally. I cannot recall any moments in which I actually felt motherly love. She rarely smiled. I was very jealous of other kids who had loving mothers to laugh and play with. I don't think she was the type who actually wanted kids to love and to share experiences with. The only reason she had me was because she felt it was her responsibility to "create the next generation and pass on her genes" and for me to grow up to be successful to repay her for giving birth to me and for providing me with food and shelter (I would constantly be reminded of this). In that way, she just followed the "survival of the fittest" biological model and is biologically my mother, but not actually a nurturing mother.

as someone who grew up in a Chinese household this rly spoke to me. like many other Asian moms, she would show her love chiefly through food - bringing cut up and peeled fruit into my room every night as I studied, remembering how much I loathe raw tomatoes, subtly noticing how much I enjoy a dish and making sure it is doubled in a heaping portion next time, always making sure I get the first opinion on what she should make for dinner. she was the best cook in town by a mile and everyone knew it. I would give anything to just taste her food again 😢
Even if your mom isn’t the best cook, appreciate her every little effort and thought. When you look back you truly see that they meant everything.

Like the saying goes, "You don't know what you have until it's gone," and the daughter in the story realized that at the end. I feed her marie biscuit in water, she won't eat anything else. I always cook with her or for her. She teach me to love homemade food and the joy of eating with family.. I remember my mom struggling to survive in the hospital. I made her her favorite dish, but my other family members didn't want her to eat it because it could be contaminated with something since I had brought it to the hospital all the way from home (she was doing chemo heavily back then). I will never forget the sadness on her face, lying there. I couldn't fault their argument, and the "it could be the last opportunity she has to eat it" went unspoken, because to very last moment we wanted to try anything available to help her to make it. She didn't. It's the only thing that I would have changed, if I could. I have inherited all her recipe notebooks/books.

I'm almost 30 and my mom still brings me food sometimes. The other day, she brought me crispy rice (the crunchy layer of rice at the bottom of a rice cooker) in a little metal bowl. As I was enjoying the snack, I looked down and realized this bowl was the soup bowl that I used growing up. I remember looking into it as I drank soup and there were very distinct dents in it. My mom has kept my soup bowl this entire time. She said she also kept my brother's too. Happy memories of my childhood rushed through me.
We often forget the sacrifices our parents make and visit them less often than we should because of our own busy schedules. This movie transcends any particular culture, but is lovingly set with an Asian theme. In every culture and throughout time, food has been used, not only as sustenance, but when prepared by loving hands, as an expression of that great love. Many of our most cherished memories center around a meal, and the wonderful textures, colors, and aromas that are part of that experience, and most importantly, those who share it with us. Food doesn’t even have to be that good or perfect to have a place in our hearts if it was made by someone we cherish.

Ya, absolutely, that's what the thing that brings our family together at the same time. When it's made by our beloved ones' hands, it's not just a "meal", it's their "love". And even if there are any imperfections, it's perfect in itself! It never has to be perfect. lots of memories are being created at the meal time. Those silly but cute talks, sharing our - trashy, cheesy, tired, bored, exhausted, wonderful, disgusting, enjoyed, hyped, happy, great or worst - day's incidents at the time of meal. We share what happened today and hear it as well, and that's when we really feel so loved! food never have to be perfect, it's perfect in itself with those tiny imperfections! It's always full of love of our beloveds!

Goodness, I always say that I don’t cry very easily, like school stress doesn’t get to me.
But oh, give me an 8 minute film about the story of a daughter and her loving mother and I sob in the first two minutes. It’s because I applied my own mother to this story, so realizing that one day, she will pass onto Heaven (presumably before me) just kicks up the waterworks. And not just my own unconditionally loving dear mother of mine, everyone I know and love will pass eventually. Gives me a bittersweet feeling as I cry, trying to keep a smile on my face. We’ll all see each other in the afterlife which makes me unbelievably happy, but just for the moment, in my living state, I cry about the inevitable deaths of everyone and the feeling of loss I will have.

      They WILL remember!
Take it from the 7th of 10 kids……..
Mom and dad had 5 boys and 5 girls……
Dad spent most of his life in the Navy….. Mom got her Cosmetology license and opened up a small shop in the basement.
We all grew up and “ scattered “ our separate ways.
We thought the parents would ALWAYS be there forever…. Lol
Most of us………Came to visit very rarely …. Including myself… sad to say……
Some of us …. Went to the military…… some got married…..
a couple of us are still trying to figure it out…….over 60 years later…. Lol
      As I returned home 15 years ago;
( in between jobs) ; mom insisted that me and my 12 year old son stay there till I got on my feet…..
my older brother lived there already ( watching over her )since dad died
      (never ever got
      along my brother ) …..
and I now share our childhood home of 53 years….. go figure… lol
      Anyway,
With Mom and dad both gone now …… I take the time to plant new annuals next to mom’s perennials each year……..
      No…… none of us said:
      “ WE LOVE YOU “ quite enough 😢 ………
But…. Mom and dad’s spirit seems to be smiling at us from above……..
We ALL have talked about the LOVE WE HAD FOR THOSE 2 SPECIAL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And……. We all wonder where are head’s were at?????
Now, at 67….. I work in the yard alone….. and think of my moms conversations…. And…. her smile….. those dimples!!!!!!
She LOVED WATCHING OPRAH…. with donuts and coffee together…
NOW…. We dumb kids…. All with gray hair….. AGREE…… they were our
POT OF GOLD….. AND THE RAINBOW………
      in our lives…….!!!!
      And….. as a BONUS…….
….both mom and dad VISIT US ….
in our dreams once in awhile……
and talk about the most MUNDANE THINGS……
      and… it’s just wonderful!!!!!🕯
Life sometimes overshadows the important things…… but… a moms and dads…. share a bond….. that acts as
      everlasting confirmation….
…… that they were loved back in the day….
      …….. and…..
      ………….. EVEN MORE NOW ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
