This is another of those games that passed me by, definitely had no idea it had a solo mode. For a book that’s assassin themed I can recommend Nemesis by James Swallow, it’s part of the Heresy series, and more than 125 pages 😉.
Haha i over-magnetized the chaos sorcerer! I wanted him to have access to all the arms right....? Well, you still only get 2-3 shoulder pads, lol, so then i had to magnetize the shoulder pads and each arm to receive them! It was an exercise in hobby magnetization...i regret nothing.
This was such a great system, really blew me away as a solo player. Unfortunately for me it felt undeveloped (not unusual for nodern GW boxed games) and came across as a single mission in a game that needed 12. I hope they revisit the game sometime and expand it to give it some proper variability.
They won't. I really enjoyed this game, but GW don't give a toss about boxed games, all they care about at this point is 40k and begrudgingly AoS. There's no money on boxes games, and you can't have competitive play of PvE games, so they have no interest in developing any of them after they've been thrown out of the door half baked.
I've had a copy of this game without the Assassin models sitting around for a while. Picked it up for a few dollars but haven't gotten around to playing. Excited to do so after this video!
I recently came across a brand new, still shrink wrapped copy of this recently and was really confused about it. I just love the idea that you can buy all 4 assassins at a discount, but also get a board game that you can play while you procrastinate building your actual 40k/30k army.......

I almost cracked. Then Deathwatch Overkill came out, I bought them both, and things have spiralled out of control from there ever since...
This is one the games that started me on the path of buying 'no minis' versions on ebay because I wanted to play the game and not just grab the exclusive minis for my 40k force. I think I also did this for Deathwatch Overkill, Betrayal at Calth, Burning of Prosepro and several of the 'modern' Warhammer Quest titles & expansions. This game is still popular with my group.
This one caught me by surprise with how fun and intuitive it is. It would have made an amazing base for additional expansions. Myself and my co-workers would frequently finish work and break open the box for a good game or two of this over some beers as a fun co-op game. Purely bought this for the game, and have zero regrets. Aaaand now I have to dig it out and start playing again because you got me thinking about using all those extra playboards from Overwatch, etc....
Thanks for sharing, Jordan! I first became aware of this game through BardicBroadcasts' unboxing video and I've been somewhat intrigued by it ever since. Being a game with both solo and co-op modes definitely leaves it right up my alley!

The only GW boardgame I've played is Blackstone Fortress, I tried playing by myself recently (managed to find the game and one expansion for retail price!!) and it was fun for a few days but each level of the game takes like an hour to do, and you have to do several dozen of them, I got burnt out pretty quick...
Got a cheap miniatureless copy of this and proxied and painted everything. Foam insert for the mini means the undersized GW box can actually be used to store it all too.
The assassinorum book by Rath is one of my favortie books. It's like and impossible heist movie. except instead of getting a team together for a heist, they are pullled together for an impossible assassination. it's really really good.
Great overview. I love this game. I hope they re-print it so I can buy it. I learned about it too late and I couldn't find a new copy. Last summer (2022) in the month of June I played it 16 time in Tabletop Simulator (on Steam). Got all the (non-Steam) achievements as well. I should play it again soon.
One of my favorite solo games thanks to Always Bored Never Boring. Really easy to play and house rule to taste. Comes with a ton of ideas for increasing difficulty or altering gameplay in the back of the book. It's perfect for when I want a Dungeon Crawl without committing to a campaign. Scratches that itch.
I got this game without the minis. Couldn't find a minis-included copy when I got interested in this game. Been thinking of proxying the baddies with Deathwatch Overkill genestealer cults. Proxies for chaos marines are a bit questionable, but otherwise it's pretty 1:1 stuff far as I'm concerned. Seems like a cool little game.
This one came out a little before I got back into the hobby but I know that Blackstone Fortress supports solo play, and if you can find them (they were rarely sold in the UK) the Space Marine Adventures games (Labyrinth of the Necrons, Rise of the Orks and, urr, the third one) do too.
I picked this game up on release and have really enjoyed it (solo) I love the minis and enjoyed painting them up for the game. I agree once you have played the mission there is not a lot else to do (aside from getting the achievements, which I think is a great idea- but you are effectively running the same mission over and over) however still a great game and a great review and insight 😊
Blackstone fortress and cursed city both have a single player option. As the enemies is controlled by card and dice you can play both games by youre self, i played both my self to learn the rules before playing with my grup and my kids
I bought this for the 4 assassin models but really enjoy this game. The only downside i have with it is that the box is too small to put the built/painted models back into the original box for storage.

I have enough chaos dudes from blackstone fortress I can proxy in (maybe with a tzeentch familiar going on secondment from Silver Tower to assist the chaos lord). Not sure if I'll pick up the actual assassins though or just use more blackstone proxies... Or some sneaky etsy lookalikes. I have deathwatch as well... Now you have me wanting to look for Calth boards!! But I shouldn't, I don't have enough time to play the games as is let alone create a mega game!
I was fortunate to get an earlier reprint from Warhammer World, but I’m hoping this is a sign that they might do more classic reprints (the original Siege and the Ork books please Games Workshop!)
Anyone suggest any other solo play miniature solo wargames? I tried Demon Ship recently (a micro Alien/ Space Hulk experience played on a series of 6x6 grid rooms), which was fun, but the ai was a little fiddly and some games I'd die before the end of the first round.
I hadn’t realised prices had rocketed up quite so much lately! I’ve seen folks talking about getting the board and components without the minis to bring the cost down at least a little bit
Unfortunately the retail cost of the assassins alone is £100 for the four, which kind of puts a minimum price on things. On the Chaos side of the box, the cultists have been replaced but are still very useable in 40k, and the Sorcerer is still a current kit (albeit a bit old compared to the rest of the faction now), which probably jacks up the price further. You might be able to get hold of the board and rules for cheaper on their own (I've had a copy sitting on the shelf without the miniatures for a while, didn't want to play the game without painting the minis first, which took me a good five or so years to get round to).

Feldharr do a foam insert which allows you to fit everythign in the box safely. Definitely worth it with the original miniatures.
