Happy birthday! I think a great analogy here would be the Dark Shadows campaign from two years before Storm of Chaos. Armies encroaching on neutral territory with the promise of great wealth and power, a bunch of cool scenarios, games that would actually affect the outcome of the campaign as a whole. Perhaps my favourite memory from that campaign was the roadshows that toured all the GW stores and brought hobby clinics , studio creatives and massive participation games. You could absolutely run something similar with a Bretonnian civil war.
I wholeheartedly agree! Those old campaign packs (Grudge of Drong, Perilous Quest, etc.) were so exciting in the 90s, and the card terrain was awesome - I'd love to see something similar, even if it's with more expensive, plastic terrain. And you left one thing out... this is also the timeline where Mordheim is hit by the comet, so it leaves the door WIDE open for that!

I've similarly been excited about The Old World and am on the verge of starting my Dark Elf collection. 💜 Narrative campaigns are my favorite way to play, and I've never heard of The Fall of Mousillion. It's such a cool story! I could imagine my Dark Elves maybe trying to side with Baron Mousillion for their own gain. 😈 Malory de Mousillion sounds like such a cool character! Can't wait to play more Old World and see what kind of stories emerge. 🥰
Good video. I'm disappointed that some of the old WFB armies aren't getting updated rules for The Old World. Especially when some of the AoS models being released could have been used in both games
The fall of Moussillon would be more akin to a small campaign like Grudge of Drong. It’s very difficult to see how other factions than Bretonnians, Chaos and Vampire Counts to be involved though
I said it before, and I will not tire saying it again: those campaign sets from 5th edition were the absolute sweet spot - and I hope (and believe) we will see similar things return for TOW. You got a storyline told over usually four scenarios, with escelating forces for both sides. You got special characters that added flavour and stories of their own. You got themed armies for all scenarios AND general list suggestions to use with your own forces. You also got ALTERNATIVES in terms of other armies to use as opponents - so you were never restricted to only the "original" armies. All of that meant a meaningful expansion of background and gameplay content for two armies, with options to use all of it with other factions as well. This is EXACTLY what TOW could use, and I am confident to see something like this in the (hopefully not too distant) future.
Merry Birthday!!! Yes, I think the Old World setting and the games could very well be the great place for the old style campaign/story packs. They could just publish the books for them, rather than producing the whole range of minis to go with them.
Was having this conversation very recently as it happens. They've shown it can be done with Horus Heresy and the sandbox allows for this sort of thing without the risk of running out of road as with original WFB - I'm so down for buying campaign books and getting involved in worldwide campaigns!
I think they should do a Border Princes campaign supplement, they have already seemed to invest a lot of effort into making it a staging ground. Almost like a Necromunda campaign, or the Might Empires campaign of old, it could focus around each player taking up the role of a Border Prince with their own staked area looking to expand their territory. Of course Chaos, Greenskins, Tomb Kings, and Elves could maybe be more external raiding forces and have different roles to play in such a campaign. Also happy belated birthday!
I not only agree with you regarding smaller scale events, but I actually find the larger scale epics to be bad. Warhammer was at its best, in my opinion, when focusing on those, less grand stories, to introduce interesting characters and scenarios. Tyrion and Teclis, Settra, Nagash etc. are all characters we have already exhausted and don't need to be in every campaign. The fall of Mousillon is indeed a very interesting part of Warhammer history and could make a solid campaign that ends up introducing the Vampire Counts into the core factions for example. Totes with you on the campaign idea. I'd possibly keep it till the bring back the Skaven but love it. Orks as Mercenaries is such an easy way for them to be shoe horned into missions. I play TK, and honestly, I agree. they are, narratively, a bit (forgive the pun) dead. The Fluff I have for my army has been built to allow them to be more interesting - they were stationed there when the TKs ruled most of the old world, as a distant outpost in modern day bretonia. It was a sort of punishment, exile. they have now risen and their king, Chakran the Foreverman, bleives he is the rightful king and is liberating his people... You have to shoe horn them in haha

I enjoy the Arthurian elements and the romance of it as well as the tragedy and heroism. Your idea has merit. I believe the vast breadth and depth of the Warhammer oeuvre would benefit from such scenarios as the Fall of Mousillon. There is so much to explore in the Old World!

I think it is going to be up to the fans to come together and create and share campaign ideas and storylines as well as hold events for The Old World. I am not sure how much focus The Old World is going to get from GW with so many other GW games out right now. Maybe take a lesson from the Mordheim fans and just keep building the Old World storyline regardless of what or when GW delivers new content. Between the old campaign boxes and the Warhammer Fantasy Skirmish rules my friends and I were able to piece together many fun campaign storylines. Although when we converted the Circle of Blood to 6th edition WHFB my friend's Vampire Count Army (Undead) massacred my Bretonnians over and over (curse you ethereal undead). My friends and I did play a couple of the battles for the Storm of Chaos and posted the results on the GW website. those were the days. Keep up the good work, Jordan!
Love the idea of Mousillon. It could be an opportunity to have a Bretonnian variant list that incorporates some undead carry-over from Vampire Counts, but within GW's confines for keeping VC out of Old World in general.
Mousillion played out as a sequel to Mordheim would be something. As you say, there's enough going on to bring almost every faction onboard. Fully agree with the general premise though, that not everything has to be a world-shattering, cataclysmic event that basically puts up the fate of the planet as the outcome - going big, isn't always the best way.

The comparison with the Horus Heresy is a great one, as both seem to be the narrative 'ying' to the 40k/AOS more tournament friendly 'yang'. The slight trouble is the Source material isn't as readily available for Old World at the moment. The rules have come out quickly with 4 arcane journals in 6 months and full rules for all the armies (even is some are not quiet what people wanted), but there only being one novel so far is disappointing. I know there are loads of old Warhammer novels out there but they don't tend to cover this exact time and are seem quiet overwhelming to get into. HH had a full set of cool novels, the amazing 1st edition black books and I think most importantly the vision of pretty much one person in the late Alan Bligh pushing it forwards. From a narrative point of view it was an easy world to get lost in, where Old World doesn't have that yet.

Earlier conflicts like the Vampire Wars and the Rise of Sotek are possibilities and would let them introduce the Vampire Counts and the Lizardmen and Skaven respectively. After Cathy Is released a campaign featuring them and the Ogres and Maybe Chaos Dwarfs would be another option that would bring back more Legacy Factions. When we get to the Great War Against Chaos there's the fact that the High Elves sat it out was because they were fending off the Dark Elf Invasion so a Campaign that covers that would be an excuse to bring back them.
I still think the real money (and joy) is in a new edition of Mordheim. I'd love to see campaigns as well, of course. It would be great to see a new edition centred on Mousillon but with Mordheim and other locations being options too. I think it would require some clever writing of Undead more generally to expand the 'Tomb Kings' ' role.
The last thing I want for The Old World is a massive status quo altering event. You might not realise it but there are a lot of people for whom their interest in the game and setting hinges on re-release/updates of their preferred faction, for them the game hasn’t even started yet! As far as the setting and story goes, the vast majority won’t even be aware that there is currently a story. I think a campaign any time before every faction has been re-launched would be potentially destructive to the momentum of the game. Even moreso if GW does a new edition any earlier than several years after everything has we-launched!
Just thinking there is no need to get all of the factions involved, could maybe release a few where 3-4 factions have a place. I am a little weary of them becoming the 40K campaigns where everything g always have to be present. Fine for huge “world spanning events” but sometimes just having a structure for 2 or three people to play is great too
I’d love for GW to try something new... Chaos actually losing a campaign. Things getting better. Evil getting pushed back. Order being restored. You could even tell the story from the other side. Instead of the forces of order fighting a holding action, but being eventually doomed to fail... tell the story from the point of view of Orcs, or Skaven or Chaos Warriors.
I came in WFB in early 4th ed and for me the mystery was the Undead (original rulebook) with all their quirky characters and no over use of Vampires a time when Necromancers rule supreme. Reading the old Batraps of the time had me absorbed - being a Skaven man myself lol. Tomb Kings never intreasted me seeing we had Undead. The same thing happened when undead became Vampire Counts and the whole tone shifted - I didn't like Vampire Counts. For me the best undead rule book is the Classic original 4th ed. - I'm bias but hey ho 😂.
Unfortunately, I don't think that they are going to put any focus on Vampire Counts or Skaven. I understand that it was needed to focus a bit the game and not have a ton of factions, but Vampire Counts and Skaven are a sad loss. Specially VC! I'd start a new army if they gave them support. I'll have to stick with my old Orcs and Goblins!

My interest in ToW has faded since seeing how minimal the fluff is, WHF without the charm and characters like it's a cheap imitation. I hope they do more with the setting, particularly imperial province regiments and the three emperor's conflict, but I'm out until they do. Bad enough it's a game without models (currently), worse that it's a game without story.
They need to start from the bottom up. Should have started months before the release with some of their stable of authors banging out short stories (initially in WD, then later published in anthlogy form) set in the lead up to the time of the game's setting, and - cooperating with Cubicle7 and Foundry, because they support the current ed on VTT- a sourcebook and campaign pack for WHFRP which could include some of the places or characters from those stories, to drum up interest at a minimal up-front cost to us gamers.
the story has just started, it's meant to be a Horus Heresy for Fantasy players. The big showdown is supposed to be between Asvar Khul and Magnus the Pious though.

For Dwarfs, the holds of Karak Norn, Karak Azgaraz and Karak Ziflin are not very far from Mousillon and could be involved.

I'll confess I'm more interested in the Tomb Kings than Bretts, but this Mousillon stuff seems aight.
I’d love for GW to try something new... Chaos actually losing a campaign. Things getting better. Evil getting pushed back. Order being restored. You could even tell the story from the other side. Instead of the forces of order fighting a holding action, but being eventually doomed to fail... tell the story from the point of view of Orcs, or Skaven or Chaos Warriors.
As an old skool fan and player I just can't bring myself to engage with the company again.
I came in WFB in early 4th ed and for me the mystery was the Undead (original rulebook) with all their quirky characters and no over use of Vampires a time when Necromancers rule supreme. Reading the old Batraps of the time had me absorbed - being a Skaven man myself lol. Tomb Kings never intreasted me seeing we had Undead. The same thing happened when undead became Vampire Counts and the whole tone shifted - I didn't like Vampire Counts. For me the best undead rule book is the Classic original 4th ed. - I'm bias but hey ho 😂.
Unfortunately, I don't think that they are going to put any focus on Vampire Counts or Skaven. I understand that it was needed to focus a bit the game and not have a ton of factions, but Vampire Counts and Skaven are a sad loss. Specially VC! I'd start a new army if they gave them support. I'll have to stick with my old Orcs and Goblins!
Give it time :) it’s been a lot more successful than I think they expected so they’ll hopefully get to them in the future!
@@The_Captain40k I hope so. VC was one of my favourite factions ever, but when I played I never started an army because I didn't want to commit to a second one when I hadn't finished my O&G army yet!

they aren't, they're legacy factions. the main studio took those ranges for AoS.

My interest in ToW has faded since seeing how minimal the fluff is, WHF without the charm and characters like it's a cheap imitation. I hope they do more with the setting, particularly imperial province regiments and the three emperor's conflict, but I'm out until they do. Bad enough it's a game without models (currently), worse that it's a game without story.

They need to start from the bottom up. Should have started months before the release with some of their stable of authors banging out short stories (initially in WD, then later published in anthlogy form) set in the lead up to the time of the game's setting, and - cooperating with Cubicle7 and Foundry, because they support the current ed on VTT- a sourcebook and campaign pack for WHFRP which could include some of the places or characters from those stories, to drum up interest at a minimal up-front cost to us gamers.
the story has just started, it's meant to be a Horus Heresy for Fantasy players. The big showdown is supposed to be between Asvar Khul and Magnus the Pious though.
