“When you whisper to the void…does it whisper back?” Rahool has asked this forever. Whenever he asks, his tone is earnest, inquisitive, and somewhat playful. I always understand his question as a means to check in on me and see if I finally heard what he has, or, more likely, what he hasn’t.
I was waiting for you to mention Ikoras quest "Into the Abyss" and her mentioning how the void speaks to us. Stick with me here, this is a bit of a long one. Each subclass got a new Quest line from ikora During the season of the deep I believe. The void one is called into the abyss. It requires you to do a bunch of different things To better understand the subclass. Now there's a certain point where ikora will send you to do a lost sector, And tell you to come back to her with an exotic you get from there. Is different depending on which class you use. But when you bring that exotic back to ikora she says directly and I quote 'Ikora holds the strange object you found on nessus. "Does it also whisper to you?" She gives you a faint, knowing smile. " Fear is a natural response to the unknown. But in time, the Void's voice will become familiar to you." BOI IF THAT DONT SET OFF RED FLAGS I DONT KNOW WHAT DOES
I’ve always seen Void as deeply connected with gravity. Some of our void abilities literally pull enemies into them. Dark matter gets its name from the fact that it doesn’t interact with light and we know that it exists because of how it interacts with gravity. Gravity interacts with all matter equally. It pulls everything together, and when you pull enough matter together you get a black hole. Something that it is so strong in its affect of gravity that even light cannot escape. The design of the child of the old gods reminds me a lot of a galaxy and at the center of it is a mini black hole. When you have a void soul and an arc soul at the same time, the arc soul will orbit around the void soul. Maybe in a similar way to how the nine are sentient dark matter, the old gods are sentient black holes? Although if they truly are “the old gods” then that would make no sense because black holes are a result of existence. So maybe the old gods existed before the creation of the universe, in the void around the singularity and the center of the Big Bang. Maybe black holes are the old gods pulling matter in so that they can return to the universe to a state of non existence/the singularity. I feel like this theory contradicts kinda contradicts itself at points though
Supporting evidence for this comes from the Graviton Lance pulse rifle. It's Void based, and the description suggests that it generates "mini black holes" when it fires.
So after to listening to alot of Byfs videos I have started to notice a lot of symmetry between the darkness and light and I almost wonder if perhaps the old gods are the creators of the darkness and light that are hinted to in the tale of the Gardener and Winnower and is the void perhaps that initial garden... Same as I also wonder if perhaps the traveler is not actually the light the same as how the witness is not actually the darkness.
I agree with you, and I still maintain it's an joking reference to the Luminiferous Aether, the theory before general relativity and Space-time as we know it. Bungie has someone who really knows their physics and it's esoteric enough most have never heard of it.
just like how fire is technically not exactly what Solar is, black holes are not what Void is. Fire is a result of Solar, like how electricity is a RESULT of Arc, ice is a result of Stasis, and finally, black holes are a result of Void. So yes gravity is deeply connected with Void but it's an effect of using Void. Like, you use Void to manifest a black hole. Void is the process and a black hole would be a consequence/result.
THIS is a proper Byf video. I don't mean to say that this other videos lack substance or aren't worthy of his reputation. But this video really just covers some of the world of Destiny. This is the type of topic which really enchanted me when I first discovered and binged his content. Lightfall really did no favors with lore, besides only singular tidbits with no further explanation or reasons to explore. But this video is just very refreshing. It's not about current or past events, or future speculation. It's just reporting, and some ideas about what the things in common could imply. Not to mention the classic D1 music. Usually when I click on a Byf video, I hope it goes something like this, but I do enjoy all his content the same. This video in particular, was very refreshing.
Interestingly Nezarec has power over the and that when he died (which he mentions that he's done before) Savathûn using a curse (likely using The Veil and possibly an early version of Strand) prevent him from dying and ressurecting in such a manner. It should also be noted that Void doesn't mean nothingness. Void energy and light comes from a hidden layer of the universe that creates and encapsulates much of the empty space in the cosmos. Stuff like dark matter, dark energy, gravity, negative mass, zero point energy, imaginary/virtual particles, quantum foam, and such . Very primordial and founding interactions that gave way to all other forms of physical existence. We learned that beings of dark matter exist like The Nine or sapient electrical currents like the Arcborn in the setting. t would not surprise me if eldritch, primordial intelligences exist in the fabric of spacetime itself. Strand and the Darkness also show us the Destiny universe seemingly has some form of panpsychism.
I will always remember that hunter that talked about the void in the old missions to recover the old subclass talking about how the void is something to be respected and careful with, like if there is something in it that is lending/allowing to tap into it's power and if you ever get into their bad side, you may not come out alive from your walk
Void was always my favorite I mean I still remember getting hooked on how the supers made you feel and throwing an entire black hole that insta evaporated anything made the power trip fantasy huge
The light trio is I see it is this: Solar: energy and existence. Arc: the connection between existence and nonexistence. Void: the power of non existence in an environment of physicality: dark matter. Rock paper scissor. Something cannot exist without nothing. Nothing cannot exist without something. And neither can exist without being connected.
I think that the idea of the void being hungry may be related to the concept of true vacuum, in which it would perpetually expand, ending the universe by complete obliteration. You could say that that kind of void is relentlessly hungry
Interestingly, some say that Void is as alive as Arc and Solar Light. But Strand is as alive as the Void. But some view the Void as a polar opposite to Strand; one is about a the absence of anything, the other is about consciousness and connection. Solar is about warmth, and lively energy, while Stasis is about the halting of energy. It makes you wonder, what the Darkness opposite of Arc is.
Osiris says in lightfall that ARC is about the movement and transfer of energy. So I believe the opposite of ARC would be some sort of traper class not necessarily STASIS. but something to contain and insulate/limit the flow of energy.
I remember people saying that a class based off of kinetic damage and energy and that kind of fits. A rejection of the energy transfer arc does and just relying of natural force
The Void light being itself sentient fits nicely into light and dark symmetry going on such as Solar and Stasis being reflections as "Energy" and "Entropy". Strand is the reflection of Void (assuming the colour theory chart), Strand being "The connection of all living consciousnesses" makes sense that its Void reflection is "Individual non living consciousnesses"
The interesting bit about the Void is that it may not be an exclusive Light Element as some may claim, as it is stated to be something that dwells between that of Light and Dark, and we see that Nezarec is someone who masters the Void too. and in the Nightstalker lore tab said that the Void can be something both literal and metaphorical. that is a neat bit.
The void almost makes me think of the nothingness before existence, the Winnower, the Gardener, and what might have come before them. Makes you wonder if they will further expand on the void after the final shape.
If there's one thing the idea of an unknowable hungry creature that wants to devour puts me in the mind of, the Aphelion. It's also of note that the Aphelion's known to appear moments before an NLS jump. (Bamberga from the Dreaming City lore book.) An NLS jump uses and NLS drive, a "propulsion system bends space around your ship, giving it the punch needed to transfer between planetary orbits." (NLS Dive in-game description.) Bending space certainly sounds like void stuff, and we know light can be manipulated by technology. (Borealis lore tab, amongst other stuff.) It's not unthinkable that the Aphelions are the Old Gods, or at the very least related.
Originally I just thought Void was the gravitational force as arc and solar are mirrors of the fundamental interactions of electromagnetism and the strong force respectively. It may still somewhat be that because gravity isn't a thing, it is the curvature of spacetime. However, it seems more like the Void is more akin to virtual particles popping in and out of existence. It is a vacuum but the vacuum is not truly empty. Since it is said the Traveler came from the Void and is assumed that the Traveler is the Gardener emerging from the Black Garden, I could see the Void as being the place where the Black Garden resides and was created. That randomness would make it align more closely to the light as well instead of the Witness and Winnower's sterile, ordered universe.
Void sounds more like a description of dark energy, which theoretically speeds up the expansion of the universe. We have no clue what it is, but one explanation for it is that it's *intrinsic to empty space* . Dark matter would slow down expansion (like any other matter) because it has mass. We also have no clue what the hell it is, but it's totally different from dark energy.
I always assumed it was us fusing our light with the power of dark matter since light governs the physical dark matter is the ultimate example of that.
The void very much reminds me description wise of the terror that is the tyranids in a way. Though obviously different universes, future antagonist after the the final shape perhaps.
On the recurring theme of void's hunger, it always reminded me of a singularity endlessly consuming everything around it. Never stopping, never satisfied. Even arc souls will orbit a void soul, caught in its gravity if the warlock has both activated. Maybe the void is the absence of matter, or maybe it is matter at its most densely concentrated, or both somehow? Either way, if something does live within the void, it seems as ravenous as the void itself. I'm reminded of the flavor text of the Voidfang Vestments from D1: "YOU WILL DREAM OF TEETH AND NOTHING ELSE" -scratched behind a buckle
I've always hated the idea that the Nine were sentient dark matter. But in my mind what could improve them is that if they came from the void called from the void by our existence and they have attached themselves to the dark matter to be able to exist here. This could also make the Nine a lead in to further things in the void and maybe a major villain in the old gods
Know what. After listening to this, it would be really interesting to see Paracausal enemies (literal enemies of Light/Darkness) roaming around and providing to be a threat. The Void being one of the most dangerous forces to face.
Hey Byf I think you should do a video talking about Savathuun's many schemes and theorize about each one and why she did them. For Halloween I'm replaying Shadowkeep and I've wondered exactly Savathuun's extent in that. I assume she taught the Hidden Swarm how to do things witht he Nightmares, she also set up Zulmak as a weapon for them to control and the Death Singer you kill in the Deathsinger exotic mission. But what I'm curious about is WHY though? Considering she sort of helped us during the seasons leading up to Witch Queen it's clear despite being our enemy, Savathuun didn't always act against us, and did help in some ways, like maybe revealing a danger to us or by causing the threat leading us to gain knowledge we needed.
I never thought things would live in the void but I always thought that the void itself was alive.... not sentient but alive. Like one large mass that devours anything it touches as it squirms through the vast reaches of space. And guardians can call on to it, manifesting and shaping it to their needs with the light.
You forgot that Rahool talks about the void in the tower, asking us if we've heard the voices in the void or something like that. Aka the void has a language, that it itself speaks and can communicate like sentient life
I absolutely love how, at the end of seasons when things are boring and there's no new content, Byf manages to come up with captivating and interesting videos on topics I would never have thought of. Byf truly does help me to keep playing consistently at this point in the seasons.
I completely didn't know that the old class lore tabs got updated, gonna go re check some of them now after this. Also thinking about it, the Nine are starting to sound like something that really straddles the line between Light and Darkness; formed by matter (light), given life by consciousness (darkness)
Void is the most interesting to me because it can be easily wielded by those who wields the light and darkness. Which may be due to its natures the "absence of both light and darkness". It makes me wonder if it's somehow connected to the power of Ley Lines. Especially, since we see void in Awoken techs quite a lot, the race that as fast as I know, draws power from the ley lines.
I've always like the idea that something real represents the aspects of the light, a pheonix or a dragon for solar, a living storm and snakes for arc but we've never had anything solid for void so I'd love to see what thing theyd use to represent it
This makes me wonder if the third darkness subclass would be the absence of thought. It would fit in with the power vacuum the witness would leave if it dies.
I’ve kinda always viewed the Void as Entropy, or adjacent to it, and “nothing” is something, it’s the absence of existence, and I think it relates to something on a much bigger level, even dimensionally.
Void representing the negative space shaped by what exists reminds me of the Ahamkara, whose power derives from the differential between the real and the potential. Some of the ways the Void is referenced in lore seems to me to evoke the idea of some sort of shadow dimension - I recall reading an entry where a hunter "reached into the Void and withdrew two spectral blades". The fact that Void confers the power to suppress Light abilities raises the question of whether the Light-suppressing tech used by Ghaul, the Psions, and the Praxics might have had something to do with Void energy. Of course Void is also associated with gravity, black holes, and antimatter, as well as relying a lot more on theoretical particle physics than any other type of energy (e.g. axion darts, Lorentz Driver). It almost seems like that quip about the Void being both metaphorical and physical just underscores the fact that Void energy seems to encompass everything about physics that we don't quite understand.
Interestingly the "eyes" in briar look a lot like Root of nightmares warlock bond, and those black tendrils like roots remind me of whats left behind when a Disciple fells, just some food for thought
Like the Gardener and the Winnower? And the Traveler is the vessel of the Gardener, and the Witness to the Winnower? That’d be a pretty dope concept, but I’m not sure how that would be told in game, should it be implemented.
That Titan was a Thatanonaut in training, so proud of him as a Warlock who, at least in my headcanon worked hard to learn as much as possible about everything.
What if the lore of child of the old gods actually refers to the Traveler, as in the Traveler is the creation that persisted and survived Wouldn't that be interesting
Even in the current.. state of Destiny 2, and even if i'm a little glad i've stopped playing, your lore videos are really the reason I (sort of) like Destiny. The story. I love the videos you make about the world and story of Destiny, and your voice sounds so nice. Thank you for your content.
The Nine are Dark Matter, the Void is Dark Energy. The lore on the Child of the Old Gods makes me think of the C'tan, the star vampires from WH40k. I'm not so sure that the Ether the Eliksni consume isn't void related, might just be the color making me say that though. Also, I've wondered for a while, what might happen if a thanatonaut huffed Dark Ether before sailing the Death Current... Also, why the hell is the Mask of the Quiet Ones not a warlock exotic?
Video might be late but I think the void is almost an aspect of darkness in the light looking back to prismatic. Where while the void materially is gravity and emptiness, that emptiness is filled with consciousness of many aspects maybe of the old gods, the nine or other things within it while Prismatic being darkness is naturally creating chaos and creation like what the light is
@My Name Is Byf:" I think you're incredibly close, but missing the link to a rather esoteric physics joke. IMO The Void is the power of Space-Time, or as it was originally postulated before Einstein: "The Luminiferous Aether". The observable universe was full of forces traveling through 'something' sound through air etc, so before Relativity or Quantum Physics, it was postulated that reality was full of some particle so small as to be undetectable. That particle filled even the harshest vacuum, between air molecules, and allowed light to propagate as a wave, not a photon as we think of it now . I highly suggest reading the Wikipedia page, but long story if the math was accurate this Lumiferous Aether that comprised reality would have to be such a magical substance it defies physics and comprehension. Lorentz (ala Lorentz Driver) had his own theory of such an Aether because at the time, quantum physics wasn't even an idea, reality followed rules, and the order of laws. Luminiferous Aether would inherently be: "the secret physics of a lost age" that was supplanted by quantum physics and general relativity... and then forgotten... "A step on to the Void, is a step upon that Nothing which can bear the weight." If you look at Space-time diagrams describing gravity, things with mass bend the space between because they are 'standing on space-time'. Luminiferous Aether= Space Time If I was to rephrase Luminiferous Aether" into modern parlance it would be something along the lines of: "The tiny substance that is everywhere, which light travels through." Such a thing would be immeasurably small, and unfathomably big in line with Ikora's description.. It's not dark matter, it's not chemical... It's a hypothetical idea that channels light, gravity, and reality itself. Likewise I think the "Child of the old gods" is a joke at how giant suns were the old gods of the universe, creating all the elements, and matter that comprise our existence. What did most of them end up as? Black holes. What is a void soul if not a tiny blackhole buddy bro?
What interests me is the wording used in the elemental energies such as arc-light, solar-light, & void-light because, by definition, a void is the absence of a thing, so calling it void-light makes me think that it's an empty form of light.
something thats always confused me about void relates the enemies we find wielding it, most notably: psions and tormentors, both of which have powers relating to psychic energy, its the psions whole thing and tormentors are related to nezarec who seems to have similar powers to them. i can Understand psions having them because they were introduced before the actual darkness elements, maybe it could have just been a stand in for darkness in old destiny, but two darkness elements existed at the time of the tormentors creation so that explanation cant be used there. so what is the void's relation to psychic energy supposed to be? and a secondary, admittedly weaker point, is that void is an element that seems to have some aspects relating to gravity, with several void tools dragging enemies together and many evoking images of black holes and such. which begs the question of how the pyramid ships weaponise gravity? an ability they've proven multiple times, first the godwaves on fondament and titan, and again with the exodus green. no known darkness power has power over gravity, except maybe resonance but we know very little about its true nature nor what it is really capable of. so are pyramid ships making some kind of use of void energy? or am i just seeing a connection here where there isnt one?
When I think of the Void, I think of H.P. Lovecraft. In the Cthulhu mythos, there are Old Gods (Elder Gods or Great Old Ones) that both create the void and are created from the void. They are often referred to as unknown and unknowable, which basically means we don't know what they are and would go mad out of the realization of our own insignificance should we discover them. Now, I don't pretend to be an expert on the Cthulhu Mythos, but I see the inspiration that Bungie clearly took from it when reading the void lore. The subtle hints at sentience, how it hungers, and how there seems to be power entities associated with it.
I have a theory that The Void was originally a power of the darkness but traded by a wager. They took Strand in exchange for the void. Also the void is the reason we are able to come back to life time and time again.
I think we need to look at Void as a blank slate on a canvas of a painting. When a painter sees a blank canvas there are many things they can do with the space. The space allows for things to be placed. Strand is letting things go that you can't control. For example the mechanics of your body. You don't tell your body to digest, produce proteins, create enzymes, etc. These are things you can't control you just allow your body to do its thing. It can be influenced by you but it will still be there even if you do something with it. This is how I see the two.
The fact that Darkness is the domain of the mind and thought while light is that of the physical makes me wonder whether a being born of pure light would even have any conscience beyond basic reflex and self preservation. The fact that the traveler's beam that hit Nezerec's pyramid created plant life (at least before they became trees of silver wings) is in my mind I perfect example of this. Perhaps a being of void is that which has a base desire to attach itself to matter, pulling it together, draining it like creeping ivy.
I have to admit that I am disappointed that you did not even mention the night stalker mission from D1 when Cayde discusses Void light from the perspective of a hunter and the dangers it possesses to hunters who use void light.
If you want my opinion? It might originate from where the hive first beat the light. Around that black hole. This would explain the hive’s affinity for utilizing Void Light in various ways in particular. While their armaments are arc and solar based usually, Ogres Naturally project Void Eye Beams. Which makes me think hive are more attuned to void, or atleast has consumed void light the most. The Nine and their realm seems, to me, more like an inbetween of The Void and The Ascendant Plane. There is likely a Void Leviathan beyond the event horizon of black holes, which void most resembles, which oversees that beyond and perforates it with void light
What this video addressed with respect to Void Light really makes me think of black holes. Black holes are often depicted as the ravenous devourers of the cosmos, and that seems to fit the vibe of Void Light with black holes being literal vacuums that suck up matter and light. But such matter and light isn't destroyed by a black hole, when it is instead compressed into a singularity with such an unfathomable mass that its gravitational pull distorts space-time. That last part speaks to how the Mask of the Quiet One attempts to "recycle" things by taking matter that exists in what we know to be normal space-time and compresses it into a singularity. Who knows? Maybe what these entries regarding Void Light are suggesting is that these singularities are somehow alive, that these "old gods" are so immeasurably powerful that a black hole is necessary to contain the singularity and prevent it from completely tearing reality asunder. Or it could very well be the case that the Nine themselves exist within a black hole, akin to what the Awoken experienced in the Distributary, and that the Awoken became what they are by having their evolution accelerated by Void Light. Is it any wonder why the Void Souls look like mini black holes in the way that they spin, complete with an accretion disk that seems to bend the same way light is bent around a black hole? I don't think that's merely coincidence by the dev team. After all, if the Light is meant to represent physical energies in the universe, and Solar and Arc represent fire and electricity respectively, that which is left would likely be the energy of black holes for the Void.
You could make an interesting video (or videos) concerning how each class of Guardian perceives the three powers of Light and how that shapes the ways they use the Light. The lore tabs for the subclasses since the 3.0 switch provide a lot of information and perspective, as well as a looking back to times before Our Guardian was resurrected.
I see the void as space-time itself. The "nothing which can bear the weight", that's gravity, the matter of no mass that is the fabric of reality takes the mass (or weight in this statement) and bends into a both intangible yet ever present force. This actually opens up the idea that the three forms of light we use represent the fundamental forces of the universe. Solar and arc are intrinsically linked to the electromagnetic force (in very different ways) and void as the gravitational force. If course the only power you could generate from the other two forces are a) a nuke, and b) a bigger nuke.
My personal head cannon is that drifter is a void user who only really uses other forms of light for his projects/ defense. And this kind helps that thought
I feel like a good thing to point out is the fact that one of our classes is called "Warlock". TL,DR: The Void is possibly a third entity similar to the Light and Dark, and gives us it's powers and in turn by using that power we feed it our enemies. Those who understand that warlocks typically draw power from other higher beings may have assumed we draw void light from the traveller. But, and this is speculation, what if void light in particular is drawn from another entity altogether. Many void related lore cards refer to the void as being hungry, so of course we should ask, "what if it is"? Osiris defines void as being a representation of both the impossibly small and large aspects of our universe. Vacuum physics and black holes, entropy and ex nihlo particle creation. A being that lives in or governs the void could allow the void to be channeled by those who understand it enough to reach out. This would explain how the hive, who use the dark, are able to still use void light in spells and weaponry. Because the void is not light at all, but rather a point between light and dark. To put it into metaphor, it is the metal between two sides of the same coin. And so, if it is neither Light nor Dark. And not beholden to the entities that govern those powers, a third entity must exist, one which oversees the void, and grants us access to that power in the form of a bargain. The void is hungry and it must feed, so in turn for using it's powers, those we kill are broken down into energy that the void can then devour.
void is literally my day 1 choice for d1 and d2 i fucking love this fathomless power so much, i wish i had the skills to show much i fantasize about just a lone voidwalker be it warlock titan or hunter
As a warlock that has been very facinated with the nature of my various familars I have theories of what void souls are. The best theory is based on the idea of hawking radiated blackholes. Modern physics has theories of countless blackholes forming in the early universe after the bigbang. These blackholes then quickly evaporated by hawking radiation after the universe expanded and their radiation excceded their intake. The pequliar nature of hawking radiation and the indestructibility of information leads to some intressting specualtions of how blackholes function and whats inside them. Information can't be destroyed and can't leave a blackhole yet a blackhole can evaporate to hawking radiation down to about the size of a proton before nothing else can leave the hole. Infact these blackholes are a candidate for darkmatter. The solution to these paradoxes of essentially no mass containing virtually unlimited information is seeminly a pocket universe in the blackhole that retains and traps the information of the absorbed matter. This would then be what a child of the old gods is a darkmatter particle, a blackhole the size of a proton but potentially containing more information and knowledge than an entire planet and child of the forces behind the big bang. As old as the universe itself and indestructible as information but as insignificant and undetectible as a darkmatter speck unless a warlock borrows it enough light to briefly increase it's gravitational pull to once again devour and learn from the universe around it. Beautiful and wonderous idea and my head canon for voidsouls.
I've had a thought before where if Nova Warp allowed the warlock to step between reality or dimensions whichever one was stated. What could a warlock do if they just learn from that, could they phase out of reality for however long or could they go to different planets without a ship since void already allowed blinking. The potential is just really interesting to me.
I still subscribe to the theory that the Ahamkara use the Void for their power, and so it’s tapping into that power to create/generate/bend reality to your will.
I was just puzzling this out with my partner a few weeks ago, including why some light powers feel like they fit with darkness powers more than others (for weapon selection). Thank you for your input on it! This is very similar to where we landed too. If you're interested, check out the light vs void (e.g. darkness) in world of Warcraft and you may see some interesting parallels to destiny too.
i think this raises the topic of what is life? i think in this scenario life can only exist in the physical plain. but a consciousness can exist in the void/ether. in terms of the light and darkness with in the game you could place all the classes on a moral allignment table, where the traveler would be lawful good, solar would be neutral good, arc would be chaotic good and void would be true neutral. members of the nine would sit ether side as lawful neutral and chaotic neutral, with darkness classes and the witness being in the catagories of lawful evil, neutral evil and chaotic evil.
...A thought occurs. If that which is or is in the Void is hungry, and will Devour, does that mean that when the weapons of Sorrow inflict their deathly design on those who fall victim to them that they are somehow tapping into this same hunger? The traits often refer to devouring or a devourer, so maybe it is that same hunger channeled through different lenses.
I was going to suggest SCP Pattern Screamers, but the Void seems to be the simple concept of absence (rather than non-existence). It is the cold fireplace waiting to be lit. It is an empty cup needing to be filled. It is not a planet, but the space it occupies. It is not space, but merely what a planet doesn't occupy. It isn't death, but it is an absence of life. It is not life, but the absence of death. It is a low pressure container compared to a high pressure container. It is the difference and the flow between them.
There has to be life in the void. Arcborn and The Nine exist. Sapient Arc Energy and Sapient Dark Matter. Hell, taken in the ascendant plane. Exotic things exist across the planes, and if something lives in the void, it needs space to live. Unless a sapient nothingness lives in nothingness.
Ikora once explained to us how a Stormcaller's mindset is a balance between the Voidwalkers' and the Sunsingers'. The same could be said for the Light elements themselves. And each of the two Darkness elements forms an opposite of the Light's powers. (thematically and gamewise in terms of 'verbs' i.e. Stasis Slow - Solar Scorch; Volatile and Unraveling Rounds) But if Stasis is the counterpart of Solar (thermodynamics), and Strand is the counterpart of Void (forces which hold reality together), what will the third Darkness element be? And how will act as an opposite of Arc?
As far as I understand it, the Void in Destiny is the space that fills the gaps between all things; down to quantum level, the Void would be the space between protons and electrons, the space between quarks within a baryon (protons/neutrons/muons), and perhaps the deepest depths of the Void is within or beyond the Planck-length (the smallest measurable distance). The bottomless well beyond the quantum flesh of the Universe.
I really love the idea that Void is the absence of matter, meaning it is still connected to matter and could not exist without or with
That's some of the cool power fantasy with void that makes it enticing for me to run, I havent swapped away from my briarbinds build since I got it.

🎭I heard a Worm Whisper once.
love lore vids that arent just about what is happening now and whats happening next. plz explore the edges of the lore more.
It’s definitely the plan.
The way UA-cam/the seasons dictates the content cycle, I’ll be doing these more at the end of seasons.
It’s what drew me to Byf’s videos. And the work done concerning A thorn vs The lastword lore story telling.
But in time, the Void's voice will become familiar to you."
BOI IF THAT DONT SET OFF RED FLAGS I DONT KNOW WHAT DOES
And Rahool asks us that too. Void's chatty. 0_o
@@JC-wv7om all void related exotics do something similar, a wild one is the lore for astrocyte verse
It's Void based, and the description suggests that it generates "mini black holes" when it fires.
the idea that these "old gods" use black holes to return points to a state of non existence is a fascinating idea and incredibly cool sounding
Stuff like dark matter, dark energy, gravity, negative mass, zero point energy, imaginary/virtual particles, quantum foam, and such
Strand and the Darkness also show us the Destiny universe seemingly has some form of panpsychism.
would be cool to one day fight a raid boss that comes out of the void
So much of the old grimoire inspires that feeling of wonder that Destiny used to have.
I will always remember that hunter that talked about the void in the old missions to recover the old subclass talking about how the void is something to be respected and careful with, like if there is something in it that is lending/allowing to tap into it's power and if you ever get into their bad side, you may not come out alive from your walk
Yes, it's called The Man in The Wall.

Hey there kiddo
Void was always my favorite I mean I still remember getting hooked on how the supers made you feel and throwing an entire black hole that insta evaporated anything made the power trip fantasy huge
I appreciate the D1 character creation music in the background
The light trio is I see it is this:
Solar: energy and existence.
@@omarririttenberg6038 the new darkness element: RUBBER

PROUD TO BE A VOID WARLOCK MAIN.
Same brother
"In the nothing, something whispers... Claim to exist..." this is a good line for void (and put some gravita and yeah void)
Oh, You Think Void Is Your Ally. But You Merely Adopted Void. I Was Born In It, Molded By It.
There should be a new vanguard division created to monitor guardians that use the void too much.
Apparently Drifter says that the Void used to be taboo like the Darkness was to the Vanguard.
Oops.... they will be pissed when they find me
My titan would be on the watchlist for that, I haven't played anything but defender Titan since launch.
Cries in Nezarec’s Sin: “ You’ll never take me alive!”
@twelved4983 yeah, void was thought to be darkness for awhile. It's kind of vampiric tbh
(Bamberga from the Dreaming City lore book.)
An NLS jump uses and NLS drive, a "propulsion system bends space around your ship, giving it the punch needed to transfer between planetary orbits." (NLS Dive in-game description.) Bending space certainly sounds like void stuff, and we know light can be manipulated by technology. (Borealis lore tab, amongst other stuff.)
It's not unthinkable that the Aphelions are the Old Gods, or at the very least related.
Warframe crossover event goes crazy
I'm reminded of the flavor text of the Voidfang Vestments from D1:
"YOU WILL DREAM OF TEETH AND NOTHING ELSE" -scratched behind a buckle
I've always hated the idea that the Nine were sentient dark matter. But in my mind what could improve them is that if they came from the void called from the void by our existence and they have attached themselves to the dark matter to be able to exist here. This could also make the Nine a lead in to further things in the void and maybe a major villain in the old gods
The thumbnail: what lives in the void.
Me: the man in the wall.
Warframe reference
Know what. After listening to this, it would be really interesting to see Paracausal enemies (literal enemies of Light/Darkness) roaming around and providing to be a threat. The Void being one of the most dangerous forces to face.
Congratulations on the Advanced GG stuff Byf.
Could that radio message be that crazy nightstalker Cayde told us about. You know the "Too much night, not enough stalker " one?
I never thought things would live in the void but I always thought that the void itself was alive.... not sentient but alive. Like one large mass that devours anything it touches as it squirms through the vast reaches of space. And guardians can call on to it, manifesting and shaping it to their needs with the light.
The Void is hungry…so says my Devour build.
Arc soul and void soul dancing with each other. Makes me think they are alive and the soul of the subclass
The way you described the nine made me immediately think about the chaos gods from Warhammer 40k and their relationship with the warp
There’s some le reddit posts in destinylore by a specific user regarding all the elements. Very scientific and thorough discussion, pretty cool stuff.
I completely didn't know that the old class lore tabs got updated, gonna go re check some of them now after this. Also thinking about it, the Nine are starting to sound like something that really straddles the line between Light and Darkness; formed by matter (light), given life by consciousness (darkness)
Totally off the topic of the video but the usage of the “Passage” piece of the D1 soundtrack is fantastic. So much nostalgia
this is the first time i was actually interested in a ad lmao Lore daddy lemonade... llmao pure magic
Interestingly the "eyes" in briar look a lot like Root of nightmares warlock bond, and those black tendrils like roots remind me of whats left behind when a Disciple fells, just some food for thought
i wonder if they got duviri in this game
It would be very cool to learn that the Traveler, the Witness, are lesser versions of ancient powers of Light, Dark, Void, Solar, etc
Like the Gardener and the Winnower? And the Traveler is the vessel of the Gardener, and the Witness to the Winnower? That’d be a pretty dope concept, but I’m not sure how that would be told in game, should it be implemented.
Cthulhu are you secretly in the destiny universe?
That Titan was a Thatanonaut in training, so proud of him as a Warlock who, at least in my headcanon worked hard to learn as much as possible about everything.
Finally. Loredaddy Byf thoroughly explains one of my most used subclasses in the Franchise. Thank you for this. ❤
What if the lore of child of the old gods actually refers to the Traveler, as in the Traveler is the creation that persisted and survived
Wouldn't that be interesting
Had this thought also
Really love this idea of the potential to have a whole new kind of big bad arc with the void. This would be really really cool

Even in the current.. state of Destiny 2, and even if i'm a little glad i've stopped playing, your lore videos are really the reason I (sort of) like Destiny. The story. I love the videos you make about the world and story of Destiny, and your voice sounds so nice. Thank you for your content.
Knowing that the Void Soul wants to engage in jolly cooperation, it will now be named Solaire
Genuinley, Void is the best subclass and this video just proves it because nothing is better than lovecraftian known-yet-unknown horror and media
It’s me. I’m the thing in the void. It’s lonely.
Video might be late but I think the void is almost an aspect of darkness in the light looking back to prismatic. Where while the void materially is gravity and emptiness, that emptiness is filled with consciousness of many aspects maybe of the old gods, the nine or other things within it while Prismatic being darkness is naturally creating chaos and creation like what the light is
This is so fascinating! Please do updated lore vids for the other 2 Light subclasses.
fun fact the nighstalker lore talks about a whispering in the void and that it likes it when the nighstalker is starving and exhausted
Luminiferous Aether= Space Time
If I was to rephrase Luminiferous Aether" into modern parlance it would be something along the lines of: "The tiny substance that is everywhere, which light travels through." Such a thing would be immeasurably small, and unfathomably big in line with Ikora's description..
I think the same. Strand is a little Light-ish to be a Darkness element, in my opinion.
In summary Void is the possibility, or endless potential, maybe this is why it's considered Light instead of a Dark power.
Which track is being used towards the end of the video? Love that vocal at 21:38
What this video addressed with respect to Void Light really makes me think of black holes.
Byf, you introduced me to Advanced GG and now I can't stop buying them. I use your code every time :)
All i have ti say is: rap, tap, tap
Love the trippy Pink Floyd music in the background! Perfect fit for a game like destiny.
void is literally my day 1 choice for d1 and d2 i fucking love this fathomless power so much, i wish i had the skills to show much i fantasize about just a lone voidwalker be it warlock titan or hunter
All this talk about void sounds like a hollow Knight lore video
i think this raises the topic of what is life? i think in this scenario life can only exist in the physical plain. but a consciousness can exist in the void/ether.
in terms of the light and darkness with in the game you could place all the classes on a moral allignment table, where the traveler would be lawful good, solar would be neutral good, arc would be chaotic good and void would be true neutral. members of the nine would sit ether side as lawful neutral and chaotic neutral, with darkness classes and the witness being in the catagories of lawful evil, neutral evil and chaotic evil.
...A thought occurs.
Byf, can you talk about the other light types solar and arc?
Please! Thank you for considering.
It would be an interesting take if the void “children of the old gods” was like the worm familiars of the hive.
My guess? Crustacean-like people and ocean-like creatures just like Risk of Rain 2: Survivors of The Void
Stasis Slow - Solar Scorch; Volatile and Unraveling Rounds)
But if Stasis is the counterpart of Solar (thermodynamics), and Strand is the counterpart of Void (forces which hold reality together), what will the third Darkness element be? And how will act as an opposite of Arc?
As far as I understand it, the Void in Destiny is the space that fills the gaps between all things; down to quantum level, the Void would be the space between protons and electrons, the space between quarks within a baryon (protons/neutrons/muons), and perhaps the deepest depths of the Void is within or beyond the Planck-length (the smallest measurable distance). The bottomless well beyond the quantum flesh of the Universe.
