  • Today we've got another Will It Run video. This time on a N scale Atlas EMD GP40 in Rock Island colors. I picked this up on eBay as somewhat of an impulse buy. I became interested after seeing that the Rock Island has been somewhat reborn (details below)

Very nice video Shane! Very impressed. This is the Rock Island Bankruptcy Blue Paint Scheme. That was the final paint scheme before they went bankrupt. Great find and Atlas units are built tough! I have several atlas n scale units and they run great. Note where the dynamic fans usually sit. That GP40
You have is non dynamic. The Rock ordered some of their EMDs with no dynamic brakes. Really awesome find!

I mentioned that in the video. MKT also had a lot of GP's without dynamic brakes.

@@Trains-With-Shane indeed! The MKT! MKT is not mentioned very often. MKT, RF&P , FEC and the Durham and Southern RRs ordered GPs with NO dynamics. I think
      It’s a cool aspect!

@@engineerpat5290 I was fortunate to grow up in an area where MKT was seen all the time. I definitely miss it.

If you want to get even closer, N-scale just about needs a microscope! And nowadays we have cheap and very good USB microscopes for about 15 bucks! They are on sale all over the web. The expensive part is the 20 dollar stand-mount with focusing table with a adjustable up-down slider. I turned one sideways to do horizontal focusing and added a second mini-table to elevate/lower objects, so I can inspect turntable-cartridge stylus tips!

I've got a magnifier visor that I use for model building for when I need to get real close. Haven't had to use it with N scale yet. Mostly the difficulty is trying to get the details to focus on the camera when zoomed in.

Thanks for the video. I like the wheel cleaning part. I’ve not used an abrasive before but I do have some 1200 grit that would work on a couple of old locos I have. Thx

1200 gritt may be a little too fine to really get a good scrub on but would be great for really smoothing out the surface and polishing it up.

I found a bunch of Atlas GP40-2's (new old stock with factory decoders and Rapido couplers) at a small local hobby shop and have been slowly buying them up. They run good out of the box but when I replaced the stock 20+ year old decoder it creeps much better, and holds speed up and down grades as well. It's tough to sink $40 into a locomotive that already run decent so I've only upgraded one so far. I have not had to clean any of them yet, and most have been running for a year or more. A very nice reliable design and I can't wait to buy more.

Lovely Atlas GP40 in the Rock Island blue paint scheme. Atlas always makes good running N scale loco's, just sometimes (can be any maker..) can be a problem with the wheels. The worst one's I had was around 22 years ago was some Bachmann Dash 8-40s, wheels were the problem. Anyway I really enjoy all your videos and keep up the good work 👍🇦🇺

Really nice engine . I'm looking for a NW2 or any switching Loco (DC) with Frisco 1st choice or MKT ,KCS . I really enjoy your video's and content . You've taught me a lot about these locomotives . I'm just getting started . Still waiting on track to finish laying track . Keep up the good work . Hope they hire some more people to take the pressure off you . Happy 4th .

I know that MicroTrains/Life Like have a SW1500 in KCS since ive got one of those. Can't remember if you commented on that video but it was just a few weeks ago when I posted it.. I'd love to find a MKT switcher as well.

Got dirt? Blow it out with electronic switch cleaner, like CRC or WD40 branded switch and contact cleaner. Do NOT just use plain standard WD40, these are all totally different chemicals, and the contact cleaner do not contain lubricants (which can leave residue), unless specified!
