Today's video features a locomotive that I came across on eBay that was described as not running. There weren't many pictures or details so I took a gamble. Mostly because KCS is one of my favorite railroads. Let's see if we can figure out what's wrong with it and if it can be saved. Time to go old school.

I finally found your channel again and am now officially subscribed !! Ive always enjoyed watching your channel, great resource and very informative. I know what you mean about buying used N scale locos from Ebay. I used to always find good deals about 4 years ago and before ,but now the prices folks are asking is just causes me to shake my head, not to mention shipping. I live in Canada and shipping kills any deals I may be thinking about. Now I buy either new or used locally. Keep up the great work on your channel Shane ,it`s in my top 10 channel to watch.

Glad to have you back, Paul! I hate what the used market has become. I try not to think about it but when i'm trying to find more locomotives to make new videos about it gets a little bit depressing.

Since you asked, a better way than using a DC controller to test a motor in a frame is to just use a 9 v battery. Pos on one frame half, neg on the other half. Flip the battery to change direction. Works with both DC & DCC engines.

Yep, the 9v battery is definitely the easiest way to test... I carry one in my pocket when I go to train shows.

I've heard of this method for quickly testing stuff at train shows, etc.

Thank you, Dave! I'm still on a very low budget filming setup, lol. But I try to make sure I cover the basics.

I was surprised you didn't order a new horn from Atlas as well.

They didn't show one in stock. At least on the part number that I searched.

I've only been in N scale for the past 14 months (have 84 locos!) and have seen the prices go insane on eBay. So glad I got my locos before the prices went insane. The closing of Model Train Stuff (Klein) last month may have contributed to it. I guy has to be sharp to get a good deal now.

Sometimes you just have to be willing to take risks that you wouldn't normally. I'm not too horrible at fixing these things so it's usually good for me. And it makes an interesting video either way.

Man, that couldn't have been a cheaper or simpler fix! Not such a bad deal for you, wonder why previous owner couldn't figure that out!

I wondered the same. Could be that the seller was just selling off some stuff that they obtained and weren't into the hobby themselves.

I would shave the one catch on the light shroud that did not have a slot for it.

I thought about that but I was afraid that it might, at that point, not have enough friction to stay in place.

@@Trains-With-Shane Good thought. If it lets the shell go back on with no interference, should be good.

No brass pickup strips? Also missing the black light box thing on the front which blocks light from going all over the cab.

Did the light cap cut out the light? It was hard to see if it was on during the postfix test.

Yeah it did. At least from what I could tell. Even though it didn't fit 100% correctly. It's close enough.
