I get so nervous for people when they're landing pike. We don't have them here. The closest I've come was trying to land very angry peacocks with a face full of trebles. The guide told me to "Grab that fish!" I asked him what kind of guide has no net for fish like this.
This video is so calming and enjoyable to watch. I have a migraine sitting here at work and feel it slowly ebbing away while watching this. Good work and good fish!
For a buried treble hook in your hand (or anywhere else) I would suggest carrying a linemans pliers or better yet, a side cutter (dikes) to cut the hook, so you do not have to paddle back to the put-in with a hook in your hand. Also, of course, always carry a good first aid kit. You never know what you may encounter that can wound you out on the water, especially fishing alone. Tight lines.
This video reminds me of fishing the Rogue River with my brother near Sparta about 20 years ago. I had strapped my waders to the top of my Chevy station wagon to dry out and some asshole stole them while I shore fished.
Hello from Belgium. A little tip: if you want to increase your take-rate on the Whopper-Plopper, I suggest replacing the original hooks by f.i. Gamakatsu hooks with straight hook tips. The standard hooks have the tips inclined inwards. It certainly increase my take-rate with appr. 40%
We love that lure & as they say when you missed that Pike twice the 3rd time was the charm & well worth getting soaked. Yea Pike slime is icky but boy are they fun to catch especially on Topwater. This may seem silly, but a SMALL drop of super glue will stop the bleeding when you get nailed as Band-Aids won't stay on & who wants to have to wear a glove the rest of the day. A Pike snag sure beats having a handful of those hooks stuck in your hand. Should you ever end up with a hook in your hand that's very bad then it's time to go back.
I always carry a small tube of crazy glue in my tackle for cuts like that. Closes it right up and you don't have to worry about dealing with bandaids coming off. 🤙🏻
I wish largemouth would attack topwaters in broad daylight like this. I can count on my fingers and toes every topwater bite I've gotten in high, direct sunlight and many of those were schooling bass attacking bait. The frog is a totally different thing to me.
They do....I've placed very well in bfl or other tournaments with buzzbaits midday bright sunny sky's. You just have to know when. I caught 2 back to back 4.5 ĺbers on the Shenandoah... .on my special buzz bait.
Smallies especially river smallmouth are one of the best species of our Great Lakes area. They grow slow and old so catch and release for me. Pound for pound best fun. Unless you get addicted to our Great Lakes steelhead.
I always carry a small first aid kit in an old mint tin. Just some iodine, quickstitch bandaids, tweezers and wrappings. God knows my clumsy ass needs it..
I like the Plopper as well. I have to use it more often. One of the few videos that teach you how to fish and actually catch fish on the video. So many I've watched and they don't catch fish. Nice job.
Awesome man! Ive used a wopper plopped a few times with no luck but looks like I'm using the wrong size for bass. We are headed up north end off July to hit the rivers again Thanks for sharing brother, God bless
My experience with whopper ploppers the 130 and 110 are your pike/musky go tos. 110 for pike 130 for musky. Watched my buddy hit a 48" musky from the bank with a whopper plopper. But for bass go with the 75 or the 90 size. I prefer the 90 size you'll still catch Dinks but it has a great cast ability to it
hi funny u say that i threw the 90 wp in loon for 2 years mainly in afternoons but a few mornings 2.never had 1 strike.then 1 sunday in am i caught 2 in a row near the bank.then i bought a few berkely versions and started catching em mainly on windy days with them.this year i havent caight anything on em.only a few on a mouse pattern buzzbait hy lunkerlure.lol.its been wacky and shakey head, ned rigs for me
Nice Pike! He missed it so many times because the bait is being worked downstream going upstream! Fish are facing head up in the current, so the bait is coming up from behind them, spooking them turning away then striking! Instead of the bait being thrown upstream working towards the fish which is already in an ambush position and mode! Making a harder strike and almost hooking itself during the strike! Fishing lakes it's the suns position that is critical! Rivers & Creeks, it where there's a current break so fish can setup for prey being pushed downstream and not use a lot of energy holding place! That's why fishing saltwater no tide movement then no active fish! Rivers & creeks are similar especially in tidal situations! But during major lunar activity then fish will be active or in deeper rivers when majors fronts especially a deep low then fishing will be crazy especially in a lake low biometric pressure allows fish move up or down in the waters column with less pressure on their air bladder! High pressure blue bird days! Fish are sitting tight to cover allowing their bladders to adjust! Nice CPR!
The first second you said "Band - aids" I added it to my list of what I need on the boat. I knew that was a good idea the second I heard it. I added rags too - not into fish slime on the hands.
Those are some nice smallmouths. It was great going with you thank you for posting. When i was young my father and i would go to a place in northern indiana where youre at looks and sounds alot like it. I miss him. Thanks again. Stay safe cheers. 🎣🩹. Dont forget the bandaids and first aid kit next time.
Remember to go as slowly as possible...UA-cam compensation is based on video length...hide the fish in your net until you've f'd around for a while, then toss him back, then make us watch you put your glove back on. Hall of Fame content right there!!!
Do you ever catch good sized fish on the 90 and 75 sizes? The monkey butt and phantom shad colors have been excellent! Also, you should consider using a pike glove to handle pike. It will save wear and tear on your hand and will make handling a slippery like much easier to handle.
I buy a 120 berkley choppo Last week and i catch a 19" smallmouth bass on my first cast after 3 more cast i catch a 4 inch bluegill haha since that i never think again this lure is too big i have à 90 size frog color and à catch a 17" bass and 15 min later à 5" bass ... so cast reel and enjoy haha i dont speak english but i think you understand what im writting
That was an awesome video man!! Heck yeah gettin the pike and big small mouths...very exciting and especially when that smallie came right up by the kayak to nail that plopper! Holy sweet man! Good job!
I just got my first bite today on the plopper, early march i didn't get the hookset on em i wasn't expecting it ao close to the bank but hopefully its a good sign.

Hello fishing brother. I’m in Southgate. That water looked good and that river looked like it had plenty of depth changes along your route. If you don’t mind; could you share where that’s at?
New to Central Michigan and have only found maple river in gratiot County but I'm looking at the grand river are there any smallmouth down that way or do I head to Mount pleasant and fish those rivers
I remember the first time I ever had my hand sliced by a fish. It was a rock bass, and I was so young I didn’t realize the spikes on its back were sharp needles…oops 😫
I have been fishing last two months and caught 2 bass so far. Looking at you catching some of those fish I feel like I m fishing wrong spots😃. Looks like no one visit those fish so they going nuts behind the whopper popper.
Pike are difficult to handle at best , as they have teeth which was demonstrated and for larger pike their gills are razor sharp and should be avoided. I managed to avoid the teeth on a 30 pound pike but tried to use the gills to hoist it and received several wounds on my digits.
Alane reminded me 10 times that the fish was going to bite you and that pike have big teeth. Keep up the good work babe. Proud of you ❤️😘
🤣🤣🤣 ohhh Alane

I live in Europe, many of us just grab the pike behind his head or reach under the gills.

Pretty good advice for a UA-cam comment

What a peaceful, relaxing video. Gorgeous scenery and one of my favorite lures to round it out! Thanks for taking the time to create this.
You are welcome. Thanks for the kind words
Kayak fishing for pike in small Michigan rivers is my favorite pastime. When they are on they are ON!
Fr I don’t live anywhere near pike but seeing them smack that top water makes me so jealous 😭

I friggin love whopper ploppers, easily the best lure in the world. If you have one in your tackle, youll never go hungry
That Pike hit where you got blasted with water 💦 - awesome!!!
I love the plopper - it produces some major surface blowups with largemouth bass in my neck of the woods.
Absolutely love the loon plopper! I use it all the time!
Yup 90 loon is the goat

Needed a slo-mo replay of that 1st fish. Vicious!
Hard to get good slow mo off a gopro.
Wow....spot amazing....one , two, three cast ,strike....
I’ve been seeing a lot of good catches off these whopper ploppers. Definitely need to get me one.
They are expensive but worth every penny.
I always carry a small tube of crazy glue in my tackle for cuts like that.
Closes it right up and you don't have to worry about dealing with bandaids coming off. 🤙🏻
I keep a little Ziploc bag with bandaids, tape, gauze, alcohol wipes, emergency teepee and super glue. Very convenient to have

Fish are weird. I've caught a catfish on a spinner in clear skies at noon.
Those multiple hits on that plopper were awesome 👌
Thanks man
Good vid! Another Michigander (Charlevoix county) and 130 lover.
I'm in sw Missouri, got to spend a week in Michigan and fish, it was a blast. Can't wait to go up there again. Awesome video!
Thank you. Yes michigan is an awesome place for outdoor recreation
I spent 20yrs in Taney County, we caught tons of bass and big ol flatheads on bull shoals. Love it up there
What a fun day on the water. Thanks for taking us along... And thanks for doing all the paddling!
Haha you betcha
Nothing like top water fishing.
Cool video! I loved the way that pike slammed your whopper plopper so close to your kayak. Keep it up!
Scared the crap out of me. It still amazes me how close to the kayak they will hit
Always keep super glue with for cuts.
Yes good advice

Agree
You can't beat a top water take.

And now I see the bite at 8:40! That was sick!

The Whopper popper is my go-to lure here in Killeen, Texas. The Widemouth Bass have no defense against it.
