    Hey all hope you liked the video.
    A while ago I made a video about movies and tv shows I would never make videos about.
    And I said that I wouldnt do foreign ones because, mainly, I didnt think they would work with my video format.
    So with this video Im trying something different from my usual style.
    If it goes over well then maybe Ill do more like this, or at least change up the video style sometimes or something
    Anyway let me know what you think

Then I realized that rich people in the real world aren't mustache twirling masterminds that are intelligent and sophisticated. Most rich people that didn't earn their wealth are just childish dicks who think too highly of themselves. I didn't think to do another one."
    But money was tight, most money went to Netflix and he needed to agree to do a second one. That's also somehow very on point of the lore tbh.

    The point of that scene was not to show that the old man was correct, it was to show he was wrong. That is implied by the homless man actually getting help. The old man is too far gone in his beliefs to see the actual truth. He only sees the dark side in people as opposed to the main character. I don't think we are meant to accept what the old man is saying , it just gives us an explanation into how he sees the world and why he would conjure up these games.

      exactly! he has such disregard for human life that he thought humans killing each other for sport would be fun for him and his bored friends. it seemed that he thought people don't just help people out of the goodness of their hearts, so he decided to "bless" them with the opportunity to change their life. I don't think that a person like the old man would really understand Gi-hun's grief and willingness to give up the game right before winning, that's why they had that last scene, to prove that there's more people like Gi-hun out there.

    Here is what i suspect - him seeing his mom dead was supposed to be an original ending. This show was clearly originally written as a one season thing, considering how all of the characters, except for the main one, ended up. Plus, the pacing of the last episode is really weird.
    I think that originally he was supposed to meet the Old Man before going home, maybe in the car instead of the Front Man, then go home and see his mom. Or maybe he would never find out, but we, the audience would?
    However, somewhere along the way, after reading the script, Netflix people realized the potential of the Squid Game and asked the director to change it to an open ending in order to do more seasons.

    I think you misunderstood the part about him winning and coming home to a dead mother- it did have meaning, and i assumed it was pretty surface level. The pursuit of money, most contestants were given a chance to leave the game and remain living life thru their struggles and hardship as they once were (i say most given the results of the first game) but a large confusing amount of them returned to the game given the risks and what they were leaving at home (ie; sick mom, lady who’d given birth to an unnamed child, etc). This was a choice to choose either the pursuit of money over lasting memory and “quality time” with family. “The Pursuit of money is the root of evil” is a constant theme in this show. While many efforts are to showcase how desperate these people are i believe their experience in the games brought out the worse in them and/or ended in their demise, while on the outside they were just human beings going thru a human experience. quick riches dont change the reality of your situation. Im sure the protagonist wouldve given his life to have back that time with his mother.

    There is an interesting interview with the western actor who plays the nekkid VIP. He explained a lot about why it comes across so cringey. They have very little control over the script and it is being written by non native English speakers. They only see the script parts with their lines so they have zero context. If the lines seem a bit unnatural to them they might say them differently in other takes but the people editing won't know what sounds more natural in English and so won't use those takes necessarily. Just how an English speaker editing someone speaking in Korean won't know the natural intonations and cadences etc.
    We are seeing westerners through they eyes of South Koreans in this case and so it is like a characature of a rich westerner but that is the same thing that happens to foreign actors in Hollywood too.

    Also, I’ll recommend watching Squid Game with the original Korean Audio with subtitles. A lot of the emotional messages and meanings get lost in the translation of the English Dub, in my opinion.

    The ending of 456 choosing to play Squid Game than seeing his daughter was already foreshadowed by the very fact that he wasn't there during her birth because he had to help his co-workers during a strike. So it makes sense why he'd keep that character trait. He would sacrifice his own pleasures to help others, but the games tested his selfishness especially during the marble scene with the old man. The marble scene paralleled the hospital scene with the old man too.

    I think it's interesting how everyone is bothered by the VIPs scenes, and don't get me wrong, the acting is terrible and the characters and dialogues are veeeeery 2 dimensional. But for once people see what that's like when it's done to white, rich characters while having the entire Asian cast being so deeply developed. It changes the way we see representation and helps us understand better what it feels like to only have these cardboard characters as references.

    • @andrewfheilman
      @andrewfheilman 3 роки тому +18

      As a screenwriter for any television show, the general rule that allows everyone to enjoy the characters, is that you yourself as the writer, or director, to not pick faveroites. There are many movies where all the cast members are perfect and have equal amount of screentime and are generally liked like jurassic park, or batman 1989, or back to the future, these box office marvels accel from audience appreciation because of the way the characters are treated not just by the other characters in the show, but also by the heads of the show behind the scenes, I think where Alex was coming from, is that the VIP characters were portrayed in such a way where the only thing the writer or director or even the actors who played them thought of the characters were just 'Oh, there just supposed to be trashy americans.' that gives those characters the deepness of a piece of paper. It's just strange to see that with all the other characters are treated with respect, (Even the protagonists) and then you get to the VIPS who are just badly written.

    He made a bunch of promises to her as he normally does, and as usual none of them ever work out. She goes to the US, hears nothing from him for a year. When he finally does make contact he says he’s going to come see her. But then he decides against it after finding out the game is still running.
    It makes perfect sense that he would do this given his character throughout the show. He knows he’s already disappointed her hundreds of times, what’s one more if the lives of 456+ other people are in the balance? He’s not being selfish at all, if anything he’s being incredibly selfless. He’s denying himself the freedom, life of security and relationship with his daughter that he’s been craving for years, and (potentially) throws all of it away to ensure what happened to his friends (and him) never happen again.

    The VIPs added a sense of horror to the games because up until then, we assumed the FrontMan was a truly fair host who probably had issues with fairness growing up on the same level of projection that Jigsaw used.
    But knowing the VIPs can alter the game to make it more exciting and thus, unfair, is really scary. I think the only game that might've inherently been unfair was the Tug Of War.

    • @TheeDeadCreator
      @TheeDeadCreator 3 роки тому +55

      u could already tell it was very, very unfair before the VIPs were revealed, and almost all games were inequitable to a significant degrees, not just the tug of war one. i mean like, i certainly wouldnt exactly call the second game very fair, in which your likelihood of success in the game is determined by the shape you picked at random. not to mention the marbles game, which also had an element of luck, and the tug of war like you mentioned, and the night time bloodbath (which albeit the latter wasnt technically a proper game, it was pretty much one as the guards had the power to stop it at any time and chose not to), which both depended on strength mostly, a characteristic that was clearly very unequally distributed among the players/teams in the fight/tug of war, respectively.

      @@god.usopp2yearsago115 But something being based on chance is not inherently unfair. Lets say you have a dispute about who takes out the trash. You decide to do a coinflip. Is it then unfair that someone wins and someone loses? All parties involved agreed to the terms before the game was played. So the coin is then perfectly fair. Equal chance for all. The strength based game of Tug of War was also fair. By virtue of your own choices in life you could increase your odds of winning. Work out or use strategy like the old man did (there is an argument to be made that it was unfair for him to compete what so ever, since he also picked all the games thus could know more about how to win). Equality of chance does not equate equality of outcome. It was brutal and horrible and even evil, but the games themselves were fair. Luck was something they all could have equally.

    I think the part where the old guy says that being rich is just boring has a deeper meaning to it. It shows how after a point of becoming uber rich, some rich people just don't find happiness in anything and go out of the way to play games with lives of innocent people. A concept like Uber rich people forming cults because they are bored. The message is anything in extremes could be detrimental. Poor people are risking their lives in games to earn money while rich people are the ones that enjoy watching these games. One's misery is one's happiness and fun. They tried to portray the social gap and the irony of economic inequality (Even though I felt that it was not portrayed perfectly like in parasite)

    You know, I think a bunch of these problems could have been solved if it wasn't for Netflix's "There must be a season 2" ideology. What really intrigued a lot of people about the show was the elusiveness of the Frontman, and they threw that all away with a Wattpad level "tHe HeRo AnD tHe ViLlAin WeRe AcTuAlLy BrOtHeRs". If the show wanted a season two, I would have preferred for them to cut out the 'plot twist' with the Frontman*, and make season two about how the guards ended up in the ratrace, because.... who would ever sign up for that willingly?

      Yes, this one does try to pull a Double Shyamalan, and I am not sure it works. The old man twist is... kind of bad, but I suppose it could survive. The brother as the frontman is worse... but maybe recoverable. Together I think they are too much and it just feels kind of forced and overdone.

    I thought it was a good show because I liked the characters and the emotion. I really enjoyed how they made you empathise with the characters. I especially felt for Sae-byeok, who just wanted to save her mother and live safely with her and her brother. And Ali, who put his wife and child before him and made sure they were safe.The actors did such a great job. I was a little confused about why there was SO much hype, but still, I thought it was good. There are some questionable choices, but that doesn’t make the entire thing dumb. I mean, your main focus in this video was on the ending. Also on another note, the English dub is awful. I hope you watched it with subtitles, as the original audio really captures the raw emotion.

    I may be the only one, but I don't get the anger over the ending. Gihun didn't abandon his daughter permanently - he wants to stand up to the organization and system that put him through everything and save other lives (close to 500). An admirable if impossible goal. I think his daughter is better off without him at this point anyways, she has a stable family at the moment, and he needs to somewhat recover from his trauma. I also think the decision is perfectly in line with his character. He participated in riots once he lost his job, he's always had that resistant streak in him, and over the course of the series he learns to be less passive to a system that has destroyed his entire life. It makes sense he would turn around to take it all down. It's not like he's getting off the plane to go win more money, I don't get the anger with his decision, even if it is frustrating he isn't seeing his daughter right away. And the entire theme of the show is the destructive nature of capitalism, which the game is a metaphor for, so isn't it righteous he wants to go and "take it down" (although it's not likely a mission he will succeed at) instead of letting the cycle continue, which the Front Man has done?

      My interpretation of the Squid Games is there are more people behind it than we know of in the first season. Like, do you really think the 45 billion yuan (?) came with no strings attached? And the fact that they still monitor him and know where he is at all times? I know we learn the old man started the games, but it's still being sustained somehow. I think Gi-hun was smart to abandon the plane.

      tbh it wasn't just him leaving his daughter that frustrated me. it was the entire last episode not being necessary just like Alex said. it felt out of place and not as carefully thought out as the previous episodes. we didn't necessarily have to see what he did after leaving the games, e.g., him giving Sae-byeok's brother to Sang-woo's mum and leaving them all that money. like did the mum or brother even want that? and the scene with the old man in the giant hospital (although aimed to be deep) kind of felt anti-climatic in comparison to the life threatening situations they had been thru the entire show. this last ep could've been the first ep of the second season as a way to summarise and pick up the series (and hopefully be better executed).
      and yeah, the daughter probably is better off without him but they still could've shown him visiting her and realising that. that way, both reasons for why he was competing in the games would be ruled and he would realise that he DID lose everything. plus, us seeing him pick his daughter over the games would have highlighted his affection for her more since we as an audience only ever saw them interact once and saw old pics of them together. it came across to me that the grandmother cared more for his daughter than he ever did

    I actually like the ending. Like, it's unsatisfying but that's what makes it kinda good imo. No super deep philosophical reason, no super big brain epic reveal, just an old billionaire that was bored and is so detached from reality that he thinks he's in the same position as someone extremely poor + can't think of any way to use his money to help people but just uses it to his own weird sense of enjoyment.
