On the start of sky base zone act two, if you suicide jump to the left at the start of the level there's a moving platform there that takes you to the emerald (and skips most of the act)

I remembered it a little differently by jumping up the ladder and drop between the rotor system. I just did that a few hours ago when i recorded a Sonic 1 playthrough (41:00 min).

On SMS, the first boss flies higher, you need to wait for him to come down before you can damage him. Not a tough fight at all though.
