HI Julia 🥰💐 I am looking forward to showing her with nicely matured growths and a pseudobulb that eventually looks like a prune 😬 should that be the case, then ... roll on blooms end 2023 😃 I checked the roots on the second new growth today, and they are extending nicely, so far, so good 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Julia! I hope that you are doing well 🤗🌸
I've got the same one. A Zygopetalum Louisendorf Rein Moonlight. Has 2 nearly lemon size pseudo bulbs, one smaller one and 2 growths coming up. I put in a 6" pot in late March. It's going to outgrow it this growing season. Very well done video.
Hi Richard 🥰💐 this is a vigorous hybrid, that's for sure! Mine is recovering accordingly. While the pseudobulb is almost totally depleted, it served it's purpose for what it still had to provide. Small growths have matured, but there are already more on the way, so... this one, I look forward to getting the growths to come back big and strong so that I get to see the blooms fresh 👍🏼 Nice to have a vigorous Zygo!! And, thank you so much for your feedback on the video, I appreciate that as well as your time watching! Hope your day is going great 🫶🏼🌸
Bonjour, mon ami, Jose 🤩💐 thank you, for attending today's class 😅🥰 I appreciate your attendance and have jotted down that you were here! You get a gold star next to you name ⭐️👍🏼 I appreciate your time and your feedback, amigo! Thank you ❤️🌸 have a fabulous Thursday 🌸
HI Sheila 😍💐 melon baller!! I learned a new word today 👍🏼 I had no idea what to call it, so... I have also learned something out of this video (not just Louisendorf grows roots sooner than Trozy Blue 😅) thank you so much for watching and your positive feedback, Sheila! ❤️hope your day was fabulous 🌸
Lynda, hi 😍💐 it has been a hot minute! It is so good to see you again 🥰 hope you are doing well!! Very good idea having his masterclass give you something out to look out for and things aren’t going so good but never mind thanks for this Nina it helps a lot of people and once again have a nice day❤❤😊😊
HI Andrea 😍💐 I have to say that, since uploading videos to YT, situations like these are more fun to handle and share. At least they may end up serving a purpose 🤞🏼👍🏼 thank you so very much for being here, watching the videos, your kind comments, Andrea, I so appreciate how generous you are with your time and support!! Hope your day was beautiful ❤️🌸
I had no idea you could cut out rot on a pseudobulb! You are indeed an orchid ninja! You handle that Mellon baller like a sword! I was glued to the screen😮looking forward to an update!
Trish, hi 😍💐 it is this or remove the whole pseudobulb, which is advisable if the rot appears to be spreading through the rhizome. If it is possible to save some of the structure, then doing this is well worth the effort. We got to some beautiful healthy green tissue, so.... 👍🏼 now, we also get to watch how quickly the rest of the bulb will deteriorate, IF at all. 🙂 all fun and games in this wonderful hobby or ours. Really appreciate your support, watching the video and your feedback, Trish! Thank you so very very much ❤️ hope your day was beautiful 🌸
🦒🙋♀🙌💖 You are so thourough and think of all the details 👌I thought I did, before I met you 😂 I would have simply cut off the rotting psb, end of story 🙄Great surgery I have to say. Smell of cut grass is so pleasant but in fact is a cry for help and that's the way plants communicate between themselves that there's danger. Hum, so, orchids communicate too. I don't know why I am surprised, they are plants too 🤣We are under a very heavy storm, rain and wind. I woke up early, it is 5 am now and the wind is howling outdoors and the rain is falling heavily. Athmosferic river again for the next days 🌪💧☔ It started to rain yesterday afternoon and I had my mounts on the table getting a flush. I was intending to leave them there all night because it is warmish but at about 9 pm I decide it was enough and I've placed them back on the rack under the eve. I am glad I did it, the hard rain would have smashed the tender leaves, for sure 😬It is pitch dark out there but with the lights on, from my lounge, it seems they are all still in place and they look wet. No wonder, the south wind is blowing the rain against them. Now, Olivia is mad at me, she wants to go out, I already have shown her it is raining but she does not want to understand, she still wants to do her morning job, that is do the garden patrol 😝Are you also getting some of the rain? Whatever it is, I hope it suits your plans for the day. Much love to you and yours 😘😘🥰🥰🤗
FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good evening / morning, meine liebe Freundin! Thank you, so much, for your kind feedback on the video, I appreciate it very much 🙏🏼 I try not to think of the reason for the smell of cut grass... it spoils the pleasure 😬 sounds terrible to think that a cry for help is so nice and I welcome it in the spring together with the first warm air 🫣 I am soooo glad that I do not have the rain that you speak of! I am very happy with the current status quo on the patio, even though I complain about the wind in my videos 😬 oh ... please, ... I could not take those conditions so soon in the season 😭 I would cry and excuse myself from YT, if that was already happening. Garden patrol / patio patrol... same here, every morning. The dogs line up in a single line against the terrace door, and they don't even wait for the door to open to squeeze through and see what new smells were left behind while they were not on the patio. Then Xyliano squawks, so, I have to get him uncovered, say my good mornings to him, give him his morning lovings, by that time I hope that my kettle has boiled so that I can get some coffee... 😅 so much for me humans first and the animals have to wait. Even though my bedroom door is open to the terrace, King is very respectful now, and we have none of that business going on upstairs. The first winter was hard for me to handle him with the training, but, now he knows and well... we can enjoy an open door for sniffing fresh air 😆 My plans for the day went, almost, to clockwork... I am so behind and felt an anxiety all day, but I think I should be ok for the coming days. I have a few more things lined up for tomorrow, so that when the gardener comes on Friday to make noise, I should not have to think about what I need to film. I think 🤞🏼🤞🏼 really appreciate you watching, thank you! I will reply to your comment on your angraecoids video tomorrow, vecina favorita ... I have to measure bosseri leaves now, just to make sure that I am not putting any conflicting thoughts in your head 😘😘 hope you get a good nights' rest!! ❤️🌸
HI Ingrid 😍💐 hope your day was beautiful, lovely lady!! Thank YOU so much for watching 🥰 your support and your comments are always so much appreciated ❤️🌸
Unlike Catteya and Oncidium, I've never had success removing part of a Zygo bulb and not having it continue to disintegrate. As for the roots, most of the Zygos and their hybrids start their new roots around the same time the plant would be blooming, so well before it would be maturing the growth. There is some variation, I have some that start new roots almost as soon as the new growth starts, others don't start until the bulb starts to form, but most start as the second leaf begins to open. This is why I recommend repotting when the growth is still young, around when the first leaf begins to emerge, because those new roots are easily damaged and it is better to repot before they begin rather than after.
Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Oh, I am expecting it to deteriorate and desiccate to nothing eventually... but, for the time being, maybe what is there will help support the new growths until it settles into the pot and hopefully NOT dump it's roots. My Trozy Blue starts new roots on the growth as it starts to fill out the bulb, and sometimes even when the bulb is already breaking through the leaves, separating them. Well, I did say 'most' in my commentary as well ... so 🙂 I am very glad to take note that the Louisendorf starts her roots so soon into growing the new growth, that is a bonus, and make determining repots much easier, seeing as it kinda falls in line with many other hybrids. Now, I am interested to see how long it is going to take for that pseudobulb to go all brown and shrivel up like a prune. 👍🏼 I love seeing how structures work around damage, and I have as yet to see a Zygo bulb do it's thing. Vamos a ver! Hope your day was fabulous, Michael! Hump Day is a done deal and tomorrow, I have to hustle to get stuff done during daylight hours. What a nuisance, and it is only going to get worse before it gets better 12/22/22. As far as I am concerned, can we just fast forward and be done with the coming 6 months 🥹🙂 thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸
Hi Diva 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so... a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it! Always nice to be able to add a new name on to my list of Blooms For You 🥰 thank you for your comment... and, congratulations on your new Zygo 🥳🥳 hope your day was awesome and once again, welcome 🤗🌸
Hi Richard 😍💐 ooohhh that can happen very quickly and because of my high humidity during June, I have the one pseudobulb where the rot was stopped with cinnamon in the hole, that started to rot now as well. I am watching it before I go in to cut it out. If it is just old and now has done it's job, then I don't want to be cutting into it and spreading bacteria. Now that my conditions are super dry again... maybe the bulb will just dry out 🤞🏼 this is a vigorous hybrid, so I am sure that your's will be ok, once you have dealt with the rot 👊🏼 thank you so much for watching! I hope you had a fabulous day ❤️🌸
Michelle, hi 😍💐 now we wait and see how long it will take for that pseudobulb to collapse... IF it collapses or if it will just live a funky looking life with half of it cut away, until time takes it's toll, and not the fact that it is missing 50% of it 😅 happy that I could at least save some of it, because, now we get to watch other happenings on this orchid 👍🏼 so good to see you, beautiful! Thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸 have a cozy evening, when you get there 🌸
🤗🤗Jambo Jambo Habari gani💃🏻🪕🎼💃🏻Melon ballers, best quality chefs knife, Cinnamon, I thought we were cooking something! 😂did you know you can get a cheese pearler that’s even smaller than a melon baller?😊. Nice job with the Zygo operation and repot. Wish your Zygo loads of new speedy growths with masses of blooms. Please do a video sometime showing her progress. I have mine in coconut husk, progress is sooo slow, roots are great, bulbs are fat and big…new growths so far not so fantastic…but she has four more starting! One of these days, I will crack the Zygo code😅. Hope you had a wonderful day rafiki🌼🌺🌸💕🥰
Rafiki yangu, Sue 😍🛖💐 sawa sawa hapa, mwanamke mzuri 🥰 I did not even know that this piece of kit is called a melon baller! IF I knew, I can assure you I totally forgot and have no memory of the fact that I knew 😆 I felt as though I was doing something with a honey dew, with the exception of how much harder it was to work through the fibre of the pseudobulbs... and the smell, of course, but the color 😍😍 you Zygo is not doing great, but you have great roots, fat bulbs, and apart from new growths not so fantastic, so far, another 4 coming?!!! mmmhhhkkkaaayy ... I am side eyeing my scrawny zygos when I envision your 'not doing so well one' 🤪🤣😅 it sounds as if you have cracked most of the code... it sounds as if you have yourself something vigorous, so... where is da matata?? 😆 curious minds want to know!! Thank you so much for watching the video, for leaving a comment... you know how I feel about seeing you 🙏🏼 (no pressure!) 😅Hope your day was beautiful, Sue ❤️🌸
HI Shirley 😍💐 thank you!! 🙏🏼 for your feedback and for letting me know that the video had something of value in it 🙏🏼 I so appreciate you letting me know, Shirley, and I appreciate you watching 🤗 hope you had yourself a beautiful day ❤️🌸
🌸🥷🏼 Trish San 😍🤸🏼♀️🙌🏼🥰💐 guten Nachmittag, Orchideen Freundin und Schwester ❤️ I had no idea that this melong thingumijig was called a melon cutter or melon baller as I have read in other comments ... woohoo... no need to fumble for that terminology anymore. Well, I hope that I won't need it that often for me to remember 😆 My Trozy Blue (the only one I had up to the point of getting Louisendorf) seems to grow it's new roots as and when the pseudobulb starts to form. My Zygonisia, I would not know exactly at this point, because they just grow straight down and I don't see them, which is a good thing. But, Louisendorf seems to have a different pattern, and well... they were very welcome!! This may be her saving grace if the pseudobulb collapses too soon. It would be amazing to get the new growths to mature, and then we are 'on our way!' 👍🏼 👍🏼thank you so much for watching and adding your experience with root growth in the comments. Very helpful for anyone else wondering when they grow... another alternative 👍🏼👍🏼 hope your day is going great 🌸🥷🏼❤️ much love to you and your's ❤️🌸
those roots seem chunky and I would have probably gone with large leca. I suppose you picked the small knowing the genus. Nice to see how you did this.
HI Larry 😍💐 they love their water and if I had higher humidity, then I would have gone with large leca as well. The small leca choice is to help counteract the dry air. IF she behaves like my others do, then maybe we can get us some blooms in 12 months 🤞🏼 which.... thank you so much for reminding me, I have had this orchid in a seaweed / calmag soak all day 🤯🤦🏼♀️ yikes!! It was meant to be that you left me a comment today, Larry!! Thank YOU!! 🙌🏼 hope your day was awesome. I appreciate you watching 🌸
@@NinjaOrchids I’m soaking the “rescue” phals that get dumped off for me near my desk at work in your cocktail right now. I was away from this location after Covid and tried to instruct on minimal care. The orchids are “alive” but I’m back in rescue mode with them again. 🤷🏽♂️
HI Stephen 😍💐 wooohooo!!! So good to see you again 😍hope YOU are doing well! Thank you so much for dropping a comment 🤗 and thank you so much for watching, your feedback on the series... I hope I can keep up the momentum. I am doing ok, Stephen, thank you for asking! A bit apprehensive about the winter coming, but trying to live in the moment. 😬 which is hard, but, I am trying!! Sooo good to see you again ❤️🌸
Love this video! You always make your repots look soooo easy with the water bath. Sometimes, however, my LECA floats! Grrrr! I have had a couple of cases with Black Rot lately. It spreads so fast! I’ve been able to save some orchids, but some not so lucky. So sad! Cannot afford to delay when rot is present; that much I have managed to learn. 😢 Best of luck with this Zygo, Nina-so beautiful! Happy growing! 😍
Barbara, hi 😍💐 how kind of you to also watch this video, thank you so much 🙏🏼 love me my water bath repots... because, it is that easy 👍🏼 some leca will be stubborn, but, as long as the majority sinks, then those rogue leca beads can be scooped out. Do you store your's submerged in water? Whether I repot or not, all year, my clean leca is stored in water. That really helps to keep them in check when it comes time to repot 👍🏼 I was hoping that the black spot would just desiccate, but the past week has been lower in temperature and higher humidity, so ... silly me didn't take that into the equation. My brain has to flip the switch about what is acceptable now and what poses a definitive danger. Checked the roots on the smallest new growth today, though and they are extending nicely, so... we should be ok 👍🏼👍🏼She really has gorgeous blooms. I almost like her better than the Trozy Blue 😬 🤫 don't let Trozy Blue hear that 😂
Wow, awesome timing Nina! Like a Boss Ninja Nina! 😉 I'll be interested to see if the pseudobulb will survive the surgery after reading M.M. comments. I have been needing a video switching my Zygopetalum to self-watering video. I have a bit of time yet before I can because my blooms are out but no new growths/roots yet. My Louisendorf 'Rhein Moonlight' has done surprisingly well for me since getting it as a youngster almost a year ago. I'm terrified to start... I don't want to kill it! 😬 I repotted right away last Nov into bark/moss mix so it's not going to be as easy as coconut coir. I watched this Masterclass but I ain't feeling like a Master yet! 😜 Thanks so much Nina!
HI Robi 😍💐 I am anticipating it to hold on long enough for the second new growth to form it's root system to the point that it can sustain itself. Maybe 2 months, also because the cooler temps will help to keep it from desiccating too fast. I have seen other pseudobulbs hold up for longer, sometimes for years, looking a little weird, for sure, but staying green 👍🏼 This is better than cutting the whole thing off, and I am glad that I had so much of it left. The repot of your Zygo will go better than you think. If bark does not come off, then leave it! These guys can be grown semi terrestrial, so old matter around their roots is not going to affect the health of the orchid when fresh media joins it. Keeping the roots is more important than removing old media. Especially with Zygos. They can handle 'any' form of media, as long as it retains water and older media will retain more water than newer will... even if you just to a gentle uppot... that is all you need to think about, and then, its a breeze 👍🏼👍🏼 You are going to knock it out of the 'park' and then give yourself a fist pump. Think uppot, and everything will be A ok!! Really appreciate you watching, lovely lady, thank you so much 🙏🏼 hope your day was beautiful 🥰🌸
@@NinjaOrchids Best wishes for your beauty of a Zygo. Louisendorf! 🤞 Thank you for your kind words Nina! That's the 'thing' though, I will be changing from bark/moss to self-watering in small pumice and synthetic sphagnum moss(Synthic). I will remember your advice and err on the side of caution when removing the bark with this first transition. I do further bark removal at the next uppot. Thanks so much Nina! Have a beauty day! 🌞💖😊
HI Mike 🥰💐 for disinfecting, I go 50/50. Just to be on the safe side, and get an immediate effect. 1 parts bleach to 10 parts water, is supposed to be sufficient, but... yeah... when it comes to working fast, and wanting something to really work, I go with 50/50. However, I would never soak my orchids in the 50/50 concentration. For soaking, always go with the 1 / 10 concentration. Really appreciate you watching 🤗 thank you so very much ❤️ hope your day was fabulous 🌸
Thanks so much, Nina. I’ll give it a try. I think part of my problem is the environment. In the winter, I use a humidifier but on the window sills where the orchids are located, I get a lot of condensation on the window sill, which could possibly lead to some kind of mold. So whether it is mold or a bacterial infection, cleaning the whole area with the bleach solution ought to help. When using the 1/10 solution on the plants, do you dip it or spray it? Can you flush the media in the pot with the 1/10 bleach solution? I’ve tried using hydrogen peroxide but don’t think it was strong enough. Thanks again. I’ll let you know how it goes. 👍🙏💝💝🙋♀️
@@168frederick I would prefer you dont use any bleach on your plants unless you have scale and nothing else works (garlic alcohol works best for me) I mentioned the soak concentration only because people do soak their orchids when scale has gotten out of hand, but they remove the orchid from the pot and soak bare root. Disinfecting the surroundings will do great. Then... if you can, increase airflow. To keep the air fresh and moving around the orchids. Usually mold can't take hold with airflow. If you have condensation, then your airflow isn't enough... balance that out, after disinfecting the space and then wipe your orchids down with hydrogen peroxide again, before putting them back. Repeat hydrogen peroxide after 7 days. The issue will not perpetuate itself once the airflow is dialled in because there are no spores flying around anymore.
Thanks so much for all your feedback. I do run fans in all the rooms where I grow my orchid, so there is plenty of air flow. I’ve been a little hesitant about rubbing down the leaves/plant with peroxide or alcohol. Some people believe it harms the plant. On the other hand, someone gave me a tip, when repotting to soak the roots in diluted hydrogen peroxide. It helps loosen the media, especially sphagnum moss. May I just say, you are awesome. Looking forward to your next video. 💗💗
Interesting about the opinions about rubbing the leaves down and the hesitation. mmhhh... I never thought of it that way. I am going to see if there are any adverse signs from here on in, because, you never know! I know that I did a lot of damage on my Sogo Vivien back in June, because I was heavy handed with the alcohol... I had had enough of the scale attacking my phalaenopsis type orchids, and I took it all out on my Sogo Viven and she objected. However, my mistakes were, drenching the poor leaves, to the point the alcohol was dripping off the leaves... absolutely NO need for that, and I did it during the hottest part of the day... and of course the evaporative cooling on the leaves took a toll and resulted in cell collapse. So... 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ double face palm! Thank you so much for your kind words! Wow... thank you!! I so appreciate that 🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️ and thank you for your support 🙏🏼

I pulled a leaf back from a large pseudo bulb. I found a black spot on the bulb. About one inch around. Otherwise everything is healthy.
I hope you had a fabulous day ❤️🌸
Lots of learning, great demonstrations
You did a fabulous job on that Zygo. A great video full of good information. Thanks Nina. I enjoyed watching. 🥰🤗❤️🌴
HI Shirley 😍💐 thank you!! 🙏🏼 for your feedback and for letting me know that the video had something of value in it 🙏🏼 I so appreciate you letting me know, Shirley, and I appreciate you watching 🤗 hope you had yourself a beautiful day ❤️🌸
Love the melon cutter idea! I find my Zygo start roots as the new growth starts growing at about 2-4 inches.
THIS comment!! I was looking for it, and here it is!! 😍 working your magic with dem phals ❤️
Hi nina I'm so loving the master classes loads of tips and tricks and information great job hope your doing well 😘😘😘
HI Stephen 😍💐 wooohooo!!!
Thanks so much Nina!
👍🏼👍🏼❤️
How do you mix the bleach water? How much bleach to how much water?
