This great song was written by Deaky. A true hidden gem, John. Thanks to the gods, Freddie encouraged him to write songs and show them. Freddie loved to sing John's songs, they were two romantic chaps. John wrote this one for his wife, isn't that sweet???❤️❤️❤️ Good choice, Chris, thanks for the request. And Hap, thanks for the reaction.
John taught himself to play keyboard (having no previous such experience)... he took it home with him to figure it out, and composed this song while doing so. John was known to do such things : Brian had (jokingly) said he wanted John to learn stand-up double-bass for ‘39 - a few days later, there John was with a stand-up bass , having taught himself -ready to record !
Written by John “Sweet Deaky” Deacon ! ♥️(and yes, this got a LOT of radio play when it came out !) He wrote it inspired by his lovely wife - they were newlyweds.
This song was, among so many other Queen songs, often used in movies and, yes, even commercials..It's kind of an anthem of friendship, appreciation and love for a lover or a friend (Deacy's wife, in this case 🙂) It does have an effect of calmness, I agree.. Simple but emotional and sweet song, just like the person who wrote it 😊
It was the mid-seventies. We would record songs from the radio on cassette tapes to make our own personalized cassettes. This song was played on the radio a lot.
Made quite a few of those mix tapes for myself. Must hit play and record simultaneously! I feel like this song was played quite a bit on U.S. top forty radio.
I love this song! Used in the opening credits of The Break Up with Vince Vaughn & Jennifer Aniston. Also used in the closing credits of Shaun of the Dead! And the countless commercials!! Sweet Deacy wrote it for his wife 💗💗💗 Who he’s still married to with six kids!! 💪💪 Freddie said he never gave John a female nickname cuz John was too masculine! 😂💪 What romantics Freddie & John were. Awwwwww!! 😍
John Deacon wrote this song for his wife Veronica and is indeed playing that white baby grand. It is probably the single Queen song any body of any age can learn and appreciate since it is so sweet. Queen does indeed do it all!
Yeah Roger didn't like "i'm happy at home", he said "I'm not singing this fucking line, we're rock n roll band" 😃 But he still did sing it. And Freddie really loved the song, he just didn't want to play electric piano. He knew John could do it himself:) Freddie often encouraged the others to play new instruments. For "Love of my life" he made Brian play the harp, and Brian said it was so hard because he never did it before.
Freddie really push the band to go where others dare not. Peter, Freddie's PA said, Freddie new what people were capable of and knew they could do things they were not aware of.
Freddie didn’t do it to encourage him. 🙄 Not one person in the band said that. Freddie refused to play the electric piano because he found it vastly inferior to a real acoustic piano. They were/are musicians. If they needed a jazz band, Brian learned to make his guitar sound that way. Need a harp. Ok, Brian will do it. Freddie won’t play electric and it’s John’s song? John will learn to play what he needs to to develop his song. Roger can’t possibly explain a song idea with drums, so he learned to play the guitars himself. Giving that impetus to Freddie takes away the outstanding musicianship and desire for perfection that was inherent in all of them.
This was a big hit when it came out. The second single from A Night At the Opera after Bohemian Rhapsody and such a contrast! In Canada (where I am from) it reached #2. Freddie didn't like the electric piano saying"why would I play that when I have a grand piano?" so Deacy went home and learned it himself. John's bass in this is pretty cool as well. If you read the lyric it could be too sweet but Freddie puts so much passion into the vocal it sounds sexy instead. Apparently Roger said something like "happy at home! You can't say that in rock and roll! What is this, the women's institute?" But it turned out to be a beautiful song. The fight about royalties was because the writer of the B-side made the same amount of money as the writer of the A-side. So Roger made the same amount as Freddie for Bohemian Rhapsody. So when this song came out Brian made sure '39 was on the B-side then all 4 got royalties. Another great reaction Hap!
One of my favorite songs by Queen. And Petsmart used in in a TV commercial a few years back. When one of your band members has a degree in electrical engineering there are a lot of things you can do in the studio.

Thanks again, Hap - this song was fairly popular in the U.S. -- written by John Deacon, of course -- quite sentimental and sweet - My BFF and I were SO into Queen, I remember that for my 16th birthday, she hand-wrote all of the lyrics for this song in the card she gave me -- it was so great... lol
THANK YOU HAP! ❤ One of my top favorite Queen songs, LOVE the video, not action packed but beautifully shot with the candlelight and the boys doing their thing. The song itself is so amazing, calming, melodic..... Freddie's soothing vocals and Brian's added riffs. The astounding Queen music 🎶 and sound 🎧 wasn't always easy to achieve but well worth the "bickering" it took. Great reaction, can't wait for the next one! 😀
From the Queen album A Night At The Opera, named after one of the Marx Brothers movies. Another great song from the album (all of them are great!), is called I'm In Love With My Car. This one is written and lead vocals by Roger Taylor.
Another Deacy great, written for his wife. Reportedly Roger hated this song saying “I’m happy at home? We can’t say that! We’re a rock band not the **expletive** country women’s association!” 🤣 It became one of their biggest hits
A way to date some songs is that Freddie grew his mustache in 1980 and shaved it in 1984 for The Great Pretender (I think that's the song he shaved it for). The painted fingernails are pre-1980.
Hap, the smile on your face made me smile too. Queen can really do anything and deliver so much joy 💕🎶 I love songs written by John. Thank you Chris for requesting this beautiful song. 💞
I don't think I've ever seen you smile so much during a reaction. Love it. There are a couple of other arrangements of You're My Best Friend floating around UA-cam. At my first listen it was a bit jarring, but really quite good.
Deaky wrote this for his wife Veronica....it’s on A Night at the Opera, 1975, along with BoRap. Roger didn’t want to sing the line “happy at home”, he was quoted as saying, “what is this the women’s institute? We’re a rock band”
Their music is engrained in a lot of countries culture, most people have heard Queen somewhere without ever realising it, a staple from Queen greatest hits.

who wrote that book? I think it's giving you the wrong impression of Freddie he was very much a team player and particularly supportive of John, the song probably wouldn't have gone on the album if Freddie han't supported him or ABTD which freddie helped him with ,the other two didn't want to work on it I very much doubt John would have expected freddie to play the wultlitzer,he knew he hated it,thats why John took it home and that's how the song came about Freddie probably offered to do it on his piano but John prefered to do it as he learnt it credit to John for learning something new and it's more interesting for John as well as for royalties,I think it would have been best if whoever wrote the a side had one of their own songs on the b side, end of arguing! and then there's no unfairness between them the better the album does the bigger the share they're getting!
@blue bell John also taught himself to play upright bass for Who Wants to Live Forever. ALL Wonderful and Committed Musicians!! 👑👑👑👑. I don’t think the idea of having the same artist on both A and B sides of a SINGLE (not Album) would solve the band’s problem of sharing royalties. By doing that, it would take 4 Singles. The way they did it, it took just 2 Singles for all 4 to have royalties from a released Single. At least that makes more sense to me. 😊🤷🏻♀️
Well if the same writer got both the A side and B side, they'd get a ton of money, the others probably wouldn't see that as fair. They did the right thing later by sharing the credit for everything.

I very much doubt John would have expected freddie to play the wultlitzer,he knew he hated it,thats why John took it home and that's how the song came about
Freddie probably offered to do it on his piano but John prefered to do it as he learnt it
credit to John for learning something new and it's more interesting for John as well
as for royalties,I think it would have been best if whoever wrote the a side had one of their own songs on the b side, end of arguing!
and then there's no unfairness between them
the better the album does the bigger the share they're getting!

I don't hate this song, but it's certainly one of my least favorite ones from Queen. A little too damn sweet for my taste.
