This is one of the most underrated Queen songs imo. From the operatic opening (straight from Pagliacci) to the brilliant vocals, wonderful piano and guitar. Very pop, but a true masterpiece.
John and Roger both look like they want to strangle Freddie for having to wear those outfits 😂 I love this song tho. So sad, beautiful and hopeful at the same time
This "giant prawn" costume is épic :D !!! the son of their producer Reinold Mack loved him so much, that he asked Freddie to come dressed with it for his birthday .... and to please the child, he did it! :D
I have to laugh a little thinking when Brian said Freddie looked like a prawn!!! It’s a costume ball rather looking like an opera setting. Amazing how Freddie’s brain worked. It was his idea. I truly believe the man was a genius well before his time. There was 2 other men who use to be a group that Freddie was in for a short time before Queen that said “We knew where music was, but Freddie knew where music was going in the future”. I still miss him even today.
I think the expressions on the other 3 bandmates reflect their feelings about having to be trussed up in those costumes :D And I think Freddie is a giant red peacock.... "a Persian Poppinjay" as he liked to call himself?
Freddie was Godfather to Mack’s son - also called Freddie - and there’s a lovely photo of Freddie and little Freddie where big Freddie is wearing the wig from this video. Apparently the kids loved it:) Freddie spent a huge amount of time at Mack’s house with him, his wife and the children and really became a part of the family according to Mack.
@AnnieMars Mack's older son wanted Freddie to wear that costume at his 8th birthday party. And Freddie came but changed into it after arriving - totally surprising the birthday boy. Online there's an interview with Freddie Mack, the much younger Godson telling the story. . .Sweet story, (me tears tho'). Freddie was just too wonderful.
One of my most favourite Queen songs! I'm glad you started with the Rio version,, because in the official video, there is so much going on, so it's normal to miss a lot of the song's beauty. You should also watch the video with commentary by Roger and Brian. While Roger keeps complaining about the costume he had to wear, Brian talks about how he worked on this song with Freddie and how they communicated through the lyrics about their own hard emotional situations of that time.
This song is amazing, it talks to my soul. Sooooooo beautiful, and the emotion on Freddie's voice, OMG!!! 💖💖💖 And Roger and John's outif, loveeeeeddddd it
This song is amazing, it’s one of my favourites. It’s very Freddie and the costumes are elisabetians, futurists and some absolute crazy like Freddie liked
This is def one of Freddie's most beautiful songs the meaning behind it is quiet sad tho as it's basically saying that although Freddie has everything he could want surrounded by luxury but the one thing he wanted more than anything was to find love this song gets me everytime . Great reaction thanks 😁
I LOVE this song!! I think this one & Jealousy have such beautiful, poignant lyrics & music....and I LOVE the video. it shows how you can be surrounded by all this fabulousness and wealth but still feel the loneliness & heartbreak everyone else feels. If you notice near the end when he sits down on the stairs, he favors his right leg a bit. He had injured it in bar in Munich I believe, and it was in a cast for awhile. It was still healing at this time & you can see how he can't put any weight on it.
One of my favorite Freddie's song. 💔❤ from 1984, The Works album. Brian said he loved it too... ofc the video clip is a bit " too much" but he wanted to show that he had it all, money , fame, he was surrounded by people but he was alone . He has been searching for real love most of his life. Roger said it was the most ridiculous video he was in , Brian is more diplomatic in the comentary video. It's hilarious to hear the two discussing on this video. But again I think it's quite a sad song. In a side note you can see how Freddie sit carefully at the end on the stairs, he was suffering of a knee " injury" at this time. I love your reaction once again Hap. Thank you. Take care.
Thanks ! I really enjoy your reactions SO much! The band may not have liked the video but Brian's 'skull guitar' cost him $1,000 in '83. For some reason I feel people like to make more of the disagreements than we should. It's too bad because they obviously LOVED each other.
Thanks for the gift!😊 Freddie still trying to bring opera and ballet to the masses? Brian still has that “unplayable” guitar. Bet that is worth some big money now. 🤪

Ever since I first saw this video (and it was long time ago :-) I can't forget the smile and stare Freddie makes at the end, when he sings "I did it for love", Always seemed as he was sending a personal message, opening his heart to us who were listening. It's a scene at 8:08 of your video, I think you missed it as you were taken away by lyrics :-) (and that is understandable, it's just a beautiful, simple and meaningful song)

Men in tights have never looked so good ,and I loved Brian's instrument ,quite a decadent video but I loved it ,can't remember if you have reacted to flash ,if not can you do it please thanks ,stay safe ,from Liverpool UK x
I smile each time looking at this video cause Roger, John, and Brian surely act like 'it's for sure a hard life' having to do that video. Can't figure why Freddie's hair had to be the long style for part of it...what is that to imply?
This video was supposed to be a take on the old operatic style of costumes. Poor Roger and John hated their costumes with Roger saying it was the most stupid video they had ever done. They found the costumes hot and itchy and they made fun of Freddie's costume with the eyes on it saying he looked like a giant Prawn. LOL. Freddie's godson, Freddie Mack wanted him to wear this costume to his birthday party and of course Freddie did that for him. Brian May said the video was an ironic take on a man who was wealthy singing about how hard life and love was. It was ironic because Freddie himself was very wealthy but still searching for love. The lady that came down the stairs and rubbed her foot on Freddie's is Barbara Valentine. She was a girlfriend of his when he lived in Munich. I don't know if she was a girlfriend in the since that they were romantic or not, but he liked her very much and was always with her. They even bought an apartment together. Again, there is much speculation about their whole relationship. He had a boyfriend named Winnie Kirchberger. He didn't speak English and Barbara was translator a lot of the time. He fell madly in love with Winnie and bought him expensive gifts and wore a ring given to him by Winnie. This was the first chance Freddie had to actually had to live happily as a normal couple. The one reason he loved Munich was that he could live more normally. Eventually, they broke up because of the strain of the language barrier and as for Barbara, she started telling stories to different sources that were not true and Freddie felt totally betrayed and ended his association with her too. It is said that Freddie wrote this song about Winnie. Freddie eventually moved on with Jim Hutton, who was with him until his death.
The lady who steps on Freddie's foot was, at the time, Freddie's girlfriend (Barbara something) and was reputedly the only woman other than Mary Austin that Freddie was in love with! Edit: ok, so reading the other comments I retract that information! Guys, I have been a fan for 35 years and simply cannot keep up with the news, the 'truths' that were lies. Barbara was clearly not a wonderful person.
Hi! Yeah this was released as the a-side track and is this the world that we created...? Was released as the b-side track so could you please do a reaction to that song? Its very beautiful and like you said you wanted to know all the songs before you did live aid, this song definetly was A part of that. Just not at the same time as the other performance but later in the evening. so maybe you could do a reaction to the live aid version after that?🙂
ua-cam.com/video/HDVwc7NrCnw/v-deo.html this is the extended version of this song and listen at the timestamp 3:15 to 3:30 This is one of the most epic voice of freddie i've heard.
Roger & Brian Hated this video. Roger thought the director Tim Pope was “taking the piss out of them....” you should check out the video with audio commentary it’s worth a chuckle. Shame because as Brian says it’s one of Freddie’s beautiful creations but totally distracting video
@@ZENOBlAmusic Ha! Roger does look very somber in this one. In the few commentaries I've listened to, Roger sounds like he didn't like any videos where they appeared to be acting.
Danielik Cibula Not true. He had a couple others he liked. He liked a Bohemian Rhapsody, I’m Going Slightly Mad, didn’t mind the video for Breakthru (had a couple issues with the others changing parts of the song) and a few other performance videos. He hated the overall process of making videos, and he (rightly) thinks their acting sucks, so hated any where they were called on to try and act.
@@HAP3SPEAKZ I think they often gave in. One of the band members said that over time they realised it was pointless arguing with Freddie when he wanted something.

It is said that Freddie wrote this song about Winnie. Freddie eventually moved on with Jim Hutton, who was with him until his death.
Barbara Valentin Freddie's friend appears un this video
The lady who steps on Freddie's foot was, at the time, Freddie's girlfriend (Barbara something) and was reputedly the only woman other than Mary Austin that Freddie was in love with!
Edit: ok, so reading the other comments I retract that information!
Guys, I have been a fan for 35 years and simply cannot keep up with the news, the 'truths' that were lies.
Barbara was clearly not a wonderful person.
Freddie wrote this masterpiece
Great reaction to a great song. Freddie is dressed as a giant prawn....not sure why lol....
LOL, its glamorous and eye catching! haha I think in his mind he thought, "why make a love song boring"...(Copyrighted HAP3SPEAKZ) ©️
Well John Deacon was dressed like an unicorn
Hi! Yeah this was released as the a-side track and is this the world that we created...? Was released as the b-side track so could you please do a reaction to that song? Its very beautiful and like you said you wanted to know all the songs before you did live aid, this song definetly was A part of that. Just not at the same time as the other performance but later in the evening. so maybe you could do a reaction to the live aid version after that?🙂
Thank you for that info Leonie. This now has me curious. (Copyrighted HAP3SPEAKZ) ©️
Freddie LOVED making this video(obviously lol) The rest?? Not so much. Cracks me up.

I did it for love.
Roger & Brian Hated this video. Roger thought the director Tim Pope was “taking the piss out of them....”
you should check out the video with audio commentary it’s worth a chuckle.
Shame because as Brian says it’s one of Freddie’s beautiful creations but totally distracting video
Video was rather fun, probably not suited to the audio! But hey --- it got our attention.

I don't think Brian actually hated it. He was quite impressed with his skull guitar. But John and Roger definitely hated the video.
@@ZENOBlAmusic Ha! Roger does look very somber in this one. In the few commentaries I've listened to, Roger sounds like he didn't like any videos where they appeared to be acting.
@@lcbcreative Roger likes only his song video Radio Gaga
Danielik Cibula Not true. He had a couple others he liked. He liked a Bohemian Rhapsody, I’m Going Slightly Mad, didn’t mind the video for Breakthru (had a couple issues with the others changing parts of the song) and a few other performance videos. He hated the overall process of making videos, and he (rightly) thinks their acting sucks, so hated any where they were called on to try and act.
Actually it's a sad song, it sounds like a cry for help
How about a "Jealousy" react, from Jazz album?
The band, all except Freddie hate this video
LOL, yeah you can tell by the thumbnail! There faces show it all, :) even during the video too. haha

@@HAP3SPEAKZ I think they often gave in. One of the band members said that over time they realised it was pointless arguing with Freddie when he wanted something.
They did it for Freddie! :-)
@@flyingcloud6776 EXACTLY. They would do anything for their Freddie
Always loved this song. Hated the video, one of there worst. I know Brian & Roger hated it to.👑
not sure they (Brian and Roger) hated the video, read here it was more so to do with the costumes and John and Roger being the ones that "hated" the video. Since Brian loved his skull guitar he was happy.
I say this based on what I have read thus far.

HAP3SPEAKZ i think your reasoning is right. Brian still has that guitar.
Well, I could be wrong. Just reading the comments thats all. So hopefully the general consensus is correct. (Copyrighted HAP3SPEAKZ) ©️
HAP3SPEAKZ I really like your reactions I look forward to them. But I’m a classic rock person. Would you react to Flash the official video?
Their worst video ever, lol!
it wasn't that bad.. really?
