  • Attic pull-down stairs can leak air which leads to higher energy bills. This video shows you how to easily construct an insulated cover.

This worked great, though I adjusted the design a little. After building the box I caulked the inside seams and taped the outside seams with duct tape. Cutting with a handsaw left some imperfections and I didn't want to take a chance on seepage. It is overkill I know. I also cut 4" strips of regular bat insulation to line the bottom where it sits on the floor. I found this works better than weather stripping largely because because I live in an older home and the attic floor is not a perfect surface.
Great idea and thanks for posting this, just wanted to share my mods as a more extreme option.

I must say, that is a brilliantly simple tip. The attic doors like the one in the video have bothered me in regard to energy loss. I'm making these!

Make the intro longer. 5-10 minutes would be great. Thanks for the video.

building this same setup this weekend, but i'm going to use hvac tape along the seams on the outside and use spray foam on the inside corners to make sure heat doesn't get in or out

Good idea. I think I would have chaulked or taped all the seams and put some fir strips on the attic floor as a position guide.

Seems like more attention should be paid to the gaps and air sealing -- if air whips right by through little gaps, it completely negates all that work from your R-10 box, right? Except long-wave radiation I guess, beaming in during the day or trying to beam out at night from your living space.

The foam board says it needs some type of protection from combustion. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Dancing Just a thick layer of Parrafin Wax should solve the problem..
I think that's what they did on the Grenfell Tower in London

And all these years that I thought that foam insulation in a fire is a no-no.

My attic door was put in the same small hallway as the AC intake vent.....Whoever came up with that idea should be flogged. Anyway I built a box but it doesn't sit flat. The hallway is like a vacuum sucking heat now and in the winter cold right next to the thermostat directly from the door. I can't get it to seal....

Depending on the situation you might try some soft foam weatherstripping like the type you put around window air conditioner units. It should be soft enough to account for uneven surfaces surrounding the attic door. You probably need to use strong double sided tape because weatherstripping adhesive is usually crap.
