Thank you very much! That was very helpful. We bought a shed that has a cathedral ceiling and we wanted to make sure we were doing it correctly and yours was one of the few videos we could find that addressed what our issues were. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video, you showed me how to properly install the rafter vent’s. I’ve been working on ventilation problems in my attic. Whoever the builder was for this community. They blocked the soffits with installation. I have a nest thermostat with sensors throughout the house and including the attic. I kept wandering why the temperatures would reach 130 to 140 on a very hot day. So I install a attic fan that took the place of my original original solar fan that I installed on top of my roof which did not last long so I went with the a quiet cool fan and installed it on the inside of the attic. I thought the quiet cool fan would make a big difference, but I finally realize that the fan was only circulating the hot air in the attic and not really reducing the temperatures. After viewing a video on attic ventilation and effects of soffits blocked , would not provide the proper ventilation needed for the attic. So I decided to check the soffits in my attic and found out that they were blocked by installation. After pulling back, the installation, I immediately noticed cool air passing over my head. I will be working on unblocking the rest of the soffits and installing the rafter vents before putting new installation back in place. The part of your video that really helped me was the part on how to install the raptor vent’s properly.

Finally, a video that shows it done correctly! The only question is if the attic isn't going to be finished and I want to insulate the entire ceiling, do I continue with the baffles until the other opening (anything special needs to be done? Thanks for the video!
Just run the baffle all the way to the ridge vent, then install the insulation. Make sure the air flow is unobstructed from the eaves vent to the ridge vent.
Good info. There are several closed channels on my roof in the attic due to the design (about 6-8 in a row of 20 rafters) and there is no way to vent. Open cell foam uses no ventilation, but no one has been able to actually explain why that product won't cause heat damage to the roof or if there is a water leak, foam inhibits the ability to locate it. In your view will approx 30% of the roof not being ventilated be a problem?
Thank you so much for this video, makes perfect sense. I was looking into spray foam insulation but my concerns about air flow and moisture are why I didn't, especially because of the high humidity area I live in. This seems to be a lot better option.
Phillip, thank you for making this video. I am thinking of doing this style of insulation for the inside of my garage. After putting the insulation in and stapling it to the joists, would I then need to put a vapour barrier in and board it up? Is this what you did as a next step?
Attics in my area require R-49 and it’s recommended to have R-60. I think the baffles would still work but would need more insulation. Wondering what is the size of your rafters? Are they 2x10 or 2x12?
One suggestion for everyone. Tape every joint after you add the baffles. It is a lot of work but block all the air leakage from the baffles so the cold or hot air is not penetrating deep into insulation. Especially in windy cold days. The reason for vented attic insulation to be as high as R-60 is because it is in direct contact with ambient air. Seal the baffles. Pay your kids to do it 😅
@@richardcuevas7349 Air seal so cold/hot air is not penetrating into the insulation where it is the lowest R value. Which is the truss heel or roof rafter where it sits on double plates.
Good video, HOWEVER! You did not explain that if adding sheetrock over insulation you must have a minimum of 2x10 rafter. If you don’t and put in a 2x8 you will compress the insulation too much and compromise the r-value
Great video. I'm insulating my attic in our new 1909 home which houses our upstairs HVAC and plan to use the attic for extra storage. As I don't plan on finishing the attic with drywall, would it be advisable to continue the baffle to the vent at the peak of the roof and insulating all the way to the top? Can i put up a faced fiberglass insulation over the radiant barrier? i am trying to keep the heat out in the summer and the attic warmer in the winter. I will install sheetrock over the insulated ceiling and walls. thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
SUPER HELPFUL awesome and informative video. I fee fully confident that I can do this! Thankyou! Is there a follow up video on pitting in the dry wall for the ceiling as a next step?
Before putting the baffles on the ceiling I got some long nails came through when the roofing was done. Do I cut those nails before placing the baffles? This the attic I talking about.
First time home owner and was looking around how to do this. This was really helpful and can do this on my own. One questions I did have was, do you leave space between the roof and where the baffel sits to allow the air flow or does it sit right up against the roof inside the attic?
Is it ok to take the insulation and baffling all the way up to the top of the ceiling while still leaving a small gap for the hot air to vent out? Or do you want to stop a certain distance?
I think the baffle instruction is great. The insulation is it maybe to thick for the rafters. Maybe you could address what thickness of insulation you can put in,ie if you have 2 by 10 rafters and 2 inches is taken up with the baffle space that leaves 8 inches for the insulation. How thick is R38 insulation? Is it only 8 inches? OR IS it 10 inches thick. I'm asking because in 1978 on our cathedral ceiling we added 2inch thick furring strips to the rafters to allow for the thicker insulation and the airspace/ baffles. We then stapled a plastic vapor barrier similar to the walls. Just wondering how what you are showing works as I'm thi king the batts are thick . Maybe they are OK. Can you address that. Thanks.
@@sharongunn1281 the insulation wraps around the baffle, it doesn’t cause the insulation to push out 2”. Now, compressing the insulation is not the best thing since it can reduce the R value. There are insulations that are as thin as 6”, Rockwool makes that. You’ll need to find the right one for your application. Hope this helps
Amazing video! I think of leaving out top one foot of my ceiling on either side (the triangle area). My vent is on that top triangle area as well and if I cover all the way up, I don’t think the vent will work well. Then I plan to cover that top triangle with a drywall (I’m covering all the ceiling with drywalls after the insulation). What do you think? Would that be bad for the cold winter?
Great video! Very detailed and just what I was looking for. Instead of covering it with drywall or plywood, would painting the insulation with a spray gun be okay?
Perfect demonstration! Thank you! What are your thoughts on adding closed-cell spray foam where baffle meets the rafter for added leak proofing? Would that be ok, overkill, or detrimental to how attic is working?

Should I cut holes in the bottom of the wood soffits and put vents in and run channels to them? Or can I just frame out the the roof vents and insulate the rest of the ceiling will that leave enough airflow? Thank you
Good video. I would have liked if you had also installed some Radiant Barrier and showed us how to do that with the proper spacing together with insulation and the baffles.
Good video, thank you. If I don't have soffits do I still have to install baffles? I have a 150 yr old house and it just has boards where soffits usually are today. Thanks!
@@PhillipsVision we don't use our Attic for our HVAC so we'll be insulating the attic floor instead of the ceiling. We still need the baffles correctly installed so that we move the cold air from outside into the attic for circulation
I have a very old house that I’m trying to insulate the attic on (there is basically none currently) but the rafters aren’t all uniformly spaced. Some are 20” apart some are 15” some less and some more! Do I need to put in two sets of baffle side by side or just a channel up the middle?

Hi! How would you go about having drywall as the interior finish on the rafters as if this was a cathedral celling in a bedroom. Vapor barrier? More ventilation?
Thank you for the content. This video was very helpful. I have never worked with insulation or dry wall or anything like that. We have had HVAC companies here to tell is we needed a new unit, which we bought. We also had one to tell us the duct work needs to needs to be re-done. No one told me that insulating the attic ceiling would is what we needed to do. I'm not able to hire a contractor for this job but I desperately have to do something. We have an issue trying to control the temperature on our second floor. Warmer than the rest of the house in summer and cooler than th rest of the house in winter. I believe our energy bill is literally through the roof because of the insulation or lack there of. In your opinion do you think I should try to do it myself? Please advise.
Hi Philip, Thank you for the video. I have a 2x6 rafters in my Attic celling.how i can use R38 in that .I already installed the sift vents. Any help is appreciated .

Hi great details, could unsure me what’s can happen if not live the ventilation space on vaulted ceiling’s thanks
Before drywall install would you cover the whole thing in 6mil plastic and tuck tape or is the paper backing enough of a vapor barrier?
The paper barrier is enough
thanks so much for putting the time into creating this video. tons of great information that I needed for my project.
Great how to video. Each step was well explained in simple terms. Will definitely follow!!!
Thx 👍
Excellent just what I required clear direct explanation of this procedure .....Thank you very much for taking the time to show us properly 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You’re welcome, glad it helped
For retrofitting an existing roof, any suggestion for dealing with the roof nails?
I had this question as well and he did answer it on a comment below, he said he pressed the baffles so the nails went through them.
I never knew I needed baffle…oops. This was a great video. Thank you.
👍
Good video. I would have liked if you had also installed some Radiant Barrier and showed us how to do that with the proper spacing together with insulation and the baffles.
Nice work. Great instructional video
thank you ...i had no idea baffles existed and they were needed for vented attics
Good video, thank you. If I don't have soffits do I still have to install baffles? I have a 150 yr old house and it just has boards where soffits usually are today. Thanks!
@@justinmejia9468 Do you have eaves and ridge vents?
Truly a great video tutorial
Thx 👍
Do we need to add the baffles that high ? What % of the slope do you recommend we cover and what are rhe pros and cons of doing one way or the other
You want to use baffles on all the areas you are running insulation.
@@PhillipsVisionthank you so much for your response ...so if we are just running baffles no insulation then just doing one layer is good ?
@@venky1777 just curious...why would you install baffle with no insulation?
@@PhillipsVision we don't use our Attic for our HVAC so we'll be insulating the attic floor instead of the ceiling. We still need the baffles correctly installed so that we move the cold air from outside into the attic for circulation
I have a very old house that I’m trying to insulate the attic on (there is basically none currently) but the rafters aren’t all uniformly spaced. Some are 20” apart some are 15” some less and some more! Do I need to put in two sets of baffle side by side or just a channel up the middle?
I would double up if you cant find wider ones.
I’m getting ready to insulate my attic but what about electric wires. Do I stuff the insulation behind the wire? Great video by the way!
@@lauramarie1171 Here is a link to another video I did where I show how to insulate around electric

Thank you! This looks a clean solution by installing the blanket on the ceiling vs floor. I have gas pipes in my attic , if it choose this method, do I need to vent my attic ?
If you have eaves vents and roof vents...yes
Great video! Super helpful. Thank you.
Question: my attic is crawl space only. Should I insulate the roof and floor? Or just one?
Definitely the roof, but you can do the floor to help insulate the house itself
Hi! How would you go about having drywall as the interior finish on the rafters as if this was a cathedral celling in a bedroom. Vapor barrier? More ventilation?
Run baffle all the way up from the eaves vents to the ridge vent, and install drywall over the insulation
Should I install a polyathene or a vapor barrier after installing the insulation ? Thank you
It’s not needed
Hi from Ireland thanks for a great video .
Thank you for this video, this is exactly what we needed help with
Glad it helped
It could help, but it sounds like you may have other issues going on as well. You could try insulating since it’s probably the least expensive
Great informative video, thank you
If I have unfaced batt insulation. Can I use a radiant/vapor barrier to secure it in place?
@@nialuv2478 yes
Hi Philip, Thank you for the video. I have a 2x6 rafters in my Attic celling.how i can use R38 in that .I already installed the sift vents. Any help is appreciated .
You can if you can find it for 6”. You don’t want to press it down too much since it interferes with the R value
Do I do this for a first floor cieling that's slanted like this?
There's nothing above it, it's the roof on the side.
Thnx a lit thus was so helpful
If you are putting insulation and drywall against the ceiling, then yes. You want it insulated, but vented properly with baffle
I live in NJ should I insulate the ceiling and the floor. Or pick from either one.
Ceiling - Yes, not sure if you need to do the floor.
Is it essential to take the baffling all the way to the eave if my knee wall is 4 ft away, or can I just apply the baffle around the room and be done? (I have a 3-4 foot dead space between the exterior wall/eave and the interior room wall).
Just apply the baffle where the insulation is going to be so air can flow through
I have an old house. The insulation looks like tiny pieces of newspapers. It’s gray. Can I use the tools you used?
Which tools, the staple gun?
Wish me luck, I’m starting at a trainee at Johnson Insulation on Monday at $17 for 2 months while I’m going through training.
Good luck 👍
