Once you relocate your spare you can fill that empty space with a fuel transfer tank. It's about 14 gallons of extra fuel that can be transfered to the main tank with the flip of a switch.
I’m really finding that ex military personnel make the best content. Usually no bs and straightforward whether it’s off-roading, bushcraft or over landing ..whatever. Keep up the great work
I don’t know how the ad system works on UA-cam, I assume the content creator can set the number. I really appreciate not having four or five ad breaks in a 17 minute video. It’s one of those little things that you don’t really notice but that makes a big difference. I don’t mind ads, it comes with being a cheap skate and not paying for a subscription, but some channels pack a 20 minute video full of them. Thanks for being mindful of that.
Ah, reminds me of back in the day when I started with my bone stock ‘16 PW. The evolution over the years to what it is today with a Four Wheel Camper in the bed, Thuren suspension and front bumper, WK sliders, custom dual rear swing out bumper, on-board air, comms, navigation, lighting, full locker and sway bar control. All along, it’s been a great truck with 82k on the clock and has done its fare share of exploring some of Arizona and Utah’s more challenging trails.
I'm a big fan of heavy duty rubber bed mats, even with a Line-X or factory spray-in liner, I use those mats because they prevent things from flying around the bed. I don't have to worry about strapping everything down with those mats, they are so good at keeping things from sliding around. They also protect whatever you put in the bed from being scratched up by the sand paper like finish of bed liner. They also look good and finish things off, easy to clean, and less than $100.
I love my PW. I have a 2020 also and the same color. I like to watch your videos and all the mods you have done to the PW. Looking forward for more PW videos.
Awesome video, Brad! Just bought my 2020 PW last month. Also own a 2017 JKU Rubicon on 35s and a 1999 (100 series) Land Cruiser! I have taken lots of inspiration from your builds!
love how the truck is coming along! love the black and white color combo, you should swap the chrome lug nuts out for some black ones, makes a huge difference in the look! I did it on my Ram and I couldn't believe how much that little detail changed it!
watching your videos just convinced me to go with a power wagon -- my dad had a disco era truck, so there's a nostalgia element -- but your rig is looking so good it finalized the decision. looking forward to what comes next!
I really enjoy the diversity of vehicles and equipment you use. Tons of info and actual hands on reviews have been helpful. The Power Wagon is awesome. I recommend your channel to all my overlanding associates.
Brad as a fellow PW owner, I can’t recommend enough the rear track bar relocation kit that Thuren sells. It raises the attachment side to the axle for the panhard, thereby reducing the lateral movement of the axle through the up and down arc during compression/rebound. Takes the waggy out of the wagon. (You’ll probably notice what feels like bump steer in the wheel during higher speed highway dips, where the truck compresses and then rises back up).
On my PW, I mounted an ARB twin compressor on an aluminum plate and slid it under the rear driver’s side seat. The bolts that held the seat down also secured the plate. The wiring and tubing was run under the carpet and into the hidden compartment then ultimately to their final destination.
The Rigd spare tire swing-out is a good option for your spare. It's a hitch mount and doesn't wobble. They go for around $1,200 and are made in the US. I may get one for my Ram.
Another great video Brad. That's a nice vehicle and it's my favorite of the TrailRecon fleet. As far as the spare tire option goes, I would install an upright tire mount in the bed. Yes, it will take up some space, but at least you have the piece of mind of a full size spare.
I’m a little jealous, I have a white 18 Power Wagon and I’m not able to deck it out as fast. So far I’ve installed a locker bypass, diamond back hd cover and 37” tires. The tires helped negotiate lol white knuckle sliders so my wife can get in easier. They will be ready in a few months. Keep up the good work so I know what I can do next to my truck lol
You can run a 35" spare in the normal spare location with the tire aired down somewhat and you may have to modify the heat shield to get it to fit. Given that you carry air and a tire patch kit that should cover you in just about any situation. Just don't over do it if you have to run the 35". Enjoyed the video.
I prefer co2 tanks also. If go larger though, especially with 37s. Perhaps a 15 or 20lb tank. Mounted vertically so you don't have to unmount it for use (c02 is a liquid of course, so in use it must be upright). These are great ideas for a power wagon. My first vehicle was a 1980 power wagon i bought used for $1500 in 1987 with 318, winch and warn hubs and two tone orange and white paint. It was awesome! Put aCB with PA outside speaker in grill and you can imagine what fun that was for me at 18 yrs of age, wheeling in the forest mountains of Snohomish Washington and crossing with a best friend for girls on weekends after highschool in the 80s. I'm getting serious desire to get one of these like what you have. Gotta relive my youth! 😆
i have rock sliders and it does change the driving dynamic of the truck. that extra weight 12 inches off the ground is notable. you will be fine with extremely careful tire placement, but if you hit those powered steps you'll instantly crush them. loving the wagon vids!! bring that to NOCO for the Overland West and we'll hit kelly flats trail (if it's open this year). that will test your truck going up hill. I have a video about it... super fun.
@7:39 oh gosh. Brad pretending like he's not sure if he's gonna go a certain route, though I think many of us know it's subtle foreshadowing hahaha. As always Brad, great content! Look forward to seeing your rooftop tent on that bed cap.
You're a Man after my own heart! I have a 2022 Level 2 white and black Power Wagon with 37" Nitto Trail Grapplers and the Amp Research power steps. I also have the S Pod controller for my offroad LED lights and onboard compressor. Next purchase is a radio but I'm probably going to buy an GMRS instead of a Ham....or maybe I'll buy both, who knows?
Looks awesome, Brad. Consider getting a BedRug bed liner. It’s foam with carpet, super lightweight, and it makes crawling back there so much nicer on your knees. Price is only about $200 as well. Also, just deflate your spare, then inflate if needed.
I have the 35” ko2’s on my 2020 power wagon. I had to deflate my spare to 5psi to get it to fit. I would be genuinely shocked if you can fit your 37” down there, even if deflated.
@@mikepierson3097 even deflated the tires maintain their shape. They don’t shrink in volume as much as you would imagine. However I can only speak to my experiences!
ohhhh 37 in stock and 33 spare?!?!?! it makes me smile to imagine driving like this along a path, but it is difficult to find a solution that doesn't need a roof rack or rear bumper add more weight ... The fixed air compressor is an extra but it makes you sleep peacefully! It is a pity that "rock slide engennering" does not make the oiwerstep for Ram, they are at the same time a rockslider/ protection and a power step, soon I will replace my "amp" with this one because in offroad I broke the ends in both sides taking a lot of rock . Keep great content!!!!!
So I just started doing sales at a dodge dealer. I’m gonna be honest before that I didn’t even know this was a thing. Always wanted a rebel, but after seeing one in the show room. I am hooked on them and been watching videos non stop. May have to trade in the gt for one in the future. Sick build

Truck is looking awesome. Rugged, ready and tough. So many options for air. I have a heavy duty portable. Works great with my 37" mudders. Hooks up to the Trucks battery with jumpers. One can love jeeps and power wagons. lol The original 4x4 trucks since 1934 Dodge. 1941 Jeep.
I actually just traded my Gladiator Rubicon in for a Power wagon last week. ARE topper is already ordered 😁. Running boards are next! I personally will be doing a drawer setup in my bed. Definitely would be interested on the details of your Ham antenna setup. Keep up the good work.
Hey Brad, the Power Wagon is looking good. In regards to using a full-size spare tire, Expedition One makes a great rear bumper with dual swing out tire carrier set-up for HD Rams. I have had their similar bumper set-up on my JKU for a number of years and has worked out great with no issues. For a less expensive option, AEV makes a vertical bed mounted tire carrier set-up for HD Rams.
@trailrecon looking awesome! I hope to see more full size overland info, rigs, etc. Us full size rigs have been left out far too long. Love your simple/affordable solutions too, thanks for speaking to the average off-roader/camper/overlander!
Thanks Brad ☹️ "I didn't want to have 3 different hard mounted radios in here" This the week after I finished hard mounting 3 radios in our truck; I got "the look" from the wife😉 All 3 radios are mounted on the underside of a shelf in the rear seat area that I converted to storage. The HAM has a separate control head and both the GMRS and CB have speaker mics with all the controls on them; not too cluttered.
Carli suspension is prototyping a 37" spare tire carrier for the Ford (stock location), perhaps they are looking into the RAM as well. An alternative is the rear bumper and tire carrier by Buckstop.
You should really look in to a bed slide. I’ve had 3 and they are super convenient and useful when using with a topper. The best brand I’ve had is the “bed rat” by weather guard. Really heavy duty and customizable. You could mount your spare on the slide up front and when needed just pull out the slide and there you go.👍🏼🇺🇸
Hey Brad I have one super simple piece of advice if you haven’t done so already, I have a 2014 2500 Ram w/basically the identical ARE topper and that little black “dust lip” on the rear that keeps the elements out of the bed, go to your local home improvement store and get a pack of those rubber drawer bumpers w/the sticky tape on the back and put them in inside lip where it would touch the paint so it doesn’t rub from wind or trail bumps...otherwise love the video, keep it up and be safe!
I have the AMP step on my 2016 lifted SD and it has been fantastic. Spray a little Fluid Film on the hinges every once in a while and you’ll be golden.
Enjoying watching the progress on your truck. Your Ram is a larger version of what I have. I got a white Tacoma, 4 DR, long bed with black accents and a white shell. I'm running 34's and have the same spare dilemma. I mounted my spare in the bed, on the passenger side in the upright position, in the same orientation as the other 4 tires. It is pushed up against the front (close to cab) of the bed. I really like the framing on your shell, I might have to see if Snugtop has the same option, or I will just have to sell mine and get an ARE. Like you, I hate dust all over my gear. If you haven't realized it yet, dust will still get in. I ended up getting a tailgate sealing kit and I made some mods to the bed to seal it up. Just got back from a week long Death Valley trip and my gear was much cleaner. Keep up the great trail vids!
I've been wanting the ram rebel 1500 for awhile now. Wish I had someone like you get into detail about this truck since you know what your talking about and how things work.
Rebel is great truck. Easier to drive and park and better gas mileage. Power wagon kills it for off road stuff. You can get a power wagon to sit 6 people too.
I would check out Carli Suspension. They have high quality suspension systems and components. CJC Offroad is a great retailer. They also have a spare tire solution that mounts to the back and fits a 37" tire.
I guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any assistance you can give me
Here’s an idea that might work to install 37‘s in the spare tire spot if there is only a few spots where the tire is touching either the frame or other components ,air down the tire and use a ratchet straps to collapse the side wall by strapping across and around the tire and you might be able to fit it in squeezing the tire the bead should stay locked on Of course you’ll have to air up the tire before you mount it but who cares if you’ve got air with you especially the air tank which can burst air very quickly into the tire to reseat the bead if it came off which I don’t believe it will
Cab roof rack. Would be a great place for spare full size with shovel, jack and air compressor w/tank (lots of fresh air up there). A rack with tall/large sides would also provide mounts for lights. I have the Rambox's on my PW, so a hardtop for the bed is out and this is the setup I'm saving for down the road.
Brad, you’re my new truck offroad hero and I’m subscribed to all the PW guys and known legends out west who only drive trucks (as you’re known for being a jeep guy). But still I just love your channel due to your awesome trips, spending time with your sons, mentioning the wife just enough lol, descriptive and carefully articulated overviews of parts, accessories, and techniques...but in regards to your spare tire situation. The ram 2500 can fit an Aired down 35 within that circular frame shield under the bed connected to the chassis. I believe you could remove that and customize a way to hold a 37 there no problem (in the grand scheme of things).
Ive looked at the power side steps as well, especially being a short person (5'4"). I still have two TJs, and replaced my daily JK Sahara with a new 21 diesel Rubicon Gladiator. (Having buyers remorse for the Gladiator btw because of that sexy ass Power Wagon!!) But I found that regardless if you off road or not, most of those power steps leave the motors horribly exposed. As mentioned before, I own a collision shop, and see this a lot with customers Jeeps and 4x4s. Bottom line is this: It doesn't matter if its a rock being thrown from off-roading, or tar/backtop from a freshly paved highway. The motors for these power steps are terribly vulnerable to battering. The best I found were the ones that were intended for off roading.. again like I said, it doesn't matter if its going offroad or not because the generic versions don't take in account usual road "violence". Oh and the warranties are better for the offroad slider power steps, because they are more expensive versions for a reason. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for all the videos!!
Nicole what “off-road power step” do you recommend for the power wagon/2500 ? I haven’t been able to find one that I would consider sturdy enough for the basic off road parameter.
I have 37s on my stock Power Wagon with factory wheels. I'm sure you can deflate a 37 and shoe horn it under there. Just inflate if when it's needed. Thats my plan at least. Love the videos.
Witch AEV rims did you use about to pick up a 2017 power wagon and want to run 37s without a lift just wondering if you went with the 10” wide rims? Also what tire width are you running
OH! one other thing... you might want to download the thuren alignment specs and get a shop to do a custom alignment. I haven't done it yet on my truck but i'm seeing unusual tire wear on my 35s. that cupping will go mostly away with the thuren spec.
I jelly Doc !!! What a sweet rig that Power Wagon is only thing I would do is a small cosmetic upgrade that is where the Power Wagon Decal ends at the top of the bed I would carry the stripe all the way across the topper.
Have any thought of towing your jeep behind the Ram Power Wagon? For long trips ! That way you have comfort on the road trips and can play hard core off road! Also I am a "Ham" too! I agree ALL radios services (HAM, CB, GMRS/FRS, and MURS) should be readily available :)
That’s the very reason I didn’t trade my 16 JKUR when I got my power wagon. I put lots of time, money and blood into making my Jeep exactly what I wanted it to be. I just didn’t have the heart to get rid of it.
Really like the ARE bed cover/cap. I like the side opening windows as well but most likely you will need to stand on the rear tires to reach the floor of the bed from the sides. I am looking at various ARE cap models as well for my 21' Power Wagon. I've had two of their caps, (Z-Series) with their sliding front window and tip out side windows, installed on two different trucks. The ARE product line is outstanding.
Bought a tradesman and really love your truck. Only 2100 miles on it so far but hate the little tires and wheels. Upgrading soon hopefully if my wife uhh I mean financial advisor see's fit.
As far as i know amp research offers the power step extreme which has two motors for each side. Not sure if you meant if they didn't have any made for the power wagon, but i don't see why they wouldn't? Lol either way you shouldn't have issues with the ones you have. I love your rig man. I look to buy a power wagon in the future, i hope you continue to take more videos. There isn't alot of people with power wagons making videos when it comes to long road trips, over landing, camping etc. Hope you fulfill that gap for those who look to have a rig like yours such as myself in the future !
Once you relocate your spare you can fill that empty space with a fuel transfer tank. It's about 14 gallons of extra fuel that can be transfered to the main tank with the flip of a switch.

The best brand I’ve had is the “bed rat” by weather guard. Really heavy duty and customizable. You could mount your spare on the slide up front and when needed just pull out the slide and there you go.👍🏼🇺🇸
Would recommend a nice rear bumper with a strong swing out. It would solve your spare problem and give you a slightly better departure angle. Win-win.
Carli suspension has a prototype spare tire carrier that replaces the factory to hitch and fits a 38” tire
That's only on the super duty. The rear trackbar location on the 2500 interferes with a larger spare
Bummer. I did not think of that. Makes perfect sense though
The topper totally looks sweet
Great! I’m excited about this build
I love this guys guys outlook and attitude! New sub here!
I'm considering buying one in Costa Rica and putting 37s on it. Great video brother!
I've got the same ARE top with some different options, and I love it. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with it Brad!
I have the AMP step on my 2016 lifted SD and it has been fantastic. Spray a little Fluid Film on the hinges every once in a while and you’ll be golden.
She's looking beautiful!! Love the PW!!!!
Thank you, me too!
Wow rigs looking good love the new tires and box canopy
Thanks 👍
Got the bed cover I see.. looks good!
Great video. Thanks. Looking at placing a PW order in a few months. Following this closely.
Cool Video mate and very nice truck!
Power Wagon is looking great....well done
Thank you!
Good choice on the truck cap. I’ve had ARE caps on my crews trucks since the early ‘90’s
I've been wanting the ram rebel 1500 for awhile now. Wish I had someone like you get into detail about this truck since you know what your talking about and how things work.
The Rebel is a great truck!
I would love any assistance you can give me
@Dalton Will instablaster :)
I’m wanting a power wagon more and more
love the offroad videos
Just another truck, liked the Gladiator
Here’s an idea that might work to install 37‘s in the spare tire spot if there is only a few spots where the tire is touching either the frame or other components ,air down the tire and use a ratchet straps to collapse the side wall by strapping across and around the tire and you might be able to fit it in squeezing the tire the bead should stay locked on Of course you’ll have to air up the tire before you mount it but who cares if you’ve got air with you especially the air tank which can burst air very quickly into the tire to reseat the bead if it came off which I don’t believe it will
Great truck and great channel Brad! Greetings from Sardinia, Italy.
A 37 has no chance of getting under there. A 35 deflated to 20PSI will fit.
@@sh0cktim3 Thanks for crushing my dreams. 🤣. I guess ill be doing some more research. And looking for a better solution.
Any running with or without sway bar disconnected? Wheel offset and tire brand?
No fire extinguisher on this truck or the new red trailer... Come on Master Chief! 🇺🇸
Witch AEV rims did you use about to pick up a 2017 power wagon and want to run 37s without a lift just wondering if you went with the 10” wide rims? Also what tire width are you running
I like the different state t-shirts Brad 👌🏼 the power wagon is looking like a great adventure rig! I’m excited to see the stages of the build! ✌🏼
Hope everyone is doing great today
For me toppers are the only way to go, they are dust busters. They are also an excellent place to bed down in a strong wind.
My ‘19 has been on 37s for the last 20k miles. No issues. Minor rubbing when turning in a parking lot.
Rig’d Supply Ultraswing is a pretty good spare tire solution. That’s the route I plan to go when I graduate to 37s.
OH! one other thing... you might want to download the thuren alignment specs and get a shop to do a custom alignment. I haven't done it yet on my truck but i'm seeing unusual tire wear on my 35s. that cupping will go mostly away with the thuren spec.
Good intel, will have to look into this. Thanks!
I jelly Doc !!! What a sweet rig that Power Wagon is only thing I would do is a small cosmetic upgrade that is where the Power Wagon Decal ends at the top of the bed I would carry the stripe all the way across the topper.
Yes you can :) been on my 37s for 9 months now.
The ARE product line is outstanding.
your truck is cool
Bought a tradesman and really love your truck. Only 2100 miles on it so far but hate the little tires and wheels. Upgrading soon hopefully if my wife uhh I mean financial advisor see's fit.
Yeah you got a power wagon!!!!
U will be doing the suspension when you put that heavy rear bumper and tire out back This truck is going to look great with some armor on it
I like this truck! My first set of wheels was a '77 Power Wagon.. wish I still had her!
Love those old classic trucks!
DANG!! That camper shell looks GREAT!!!I want a power wagon now 😳
