Best video I’ve seen on these pop ups. Very informative and went over all the details without having to hear crappy music or screaming people in the background. Looking to buy a Four Wheel “Fleet” for my Tacoma.
I’ve had this combo... power wagon with a hawk for a couple years now, absolutely love it, the hot water, fridge, furnace where a game changer for my wife.
I've had a FWC Fleet on my truck since December of 2015. I've traveled all over the west (~260,000 miles) nearly all boondocking. The FWC is fantastic and reliable. I've never had any regrets - and I'm picky. I'm going to buy a new truck - but the FWC is fine as is.
Brad you should talk more about costs with all the gear. With probably over $250k in vehicle/equipment costs, it’s seems like an important oversight imo. The camper looks great! I could definitely see getting something like this for my small family and I.
Useful hint: I'm old, raising and lowering the top was a bit of an issue with me. On my first trip someone showed me how to use the roof fan as an assist. WOW! What a difference - its now EASY - especially when there's a brisk wind.
I have an old Grandby, on my '93 Ram250 Long bed 4x4. Two suggestions: 1: Swap out that 'fantastic fan' for a MaxxAir fan. You'll be MUCH happier, AND, you can use it in bad weather! (Rain doesn't come in it!) 2: Look up Exped Mega Mat. I swapped out my foam mattress for that inflatable pad, and I absolutely LOVE it. I can adjust it, based on how badly my back feels! (Please be mindful to deflate it, when you're driving around, as large changes in elevation (and heat) may cause 'stretching/ballooning' problems) Other than that, congrats, and welcome to the FWC family!
I just purchased the exact same model in charcoal after watching this video. Someone canceled their order and I grabbed it. Just deciding on the Ram 1500 rebel or the F150 hybrid with the 7.2 kw generator. Thanks for the great video.
This is practically the exact same setup i wanna do with my 2022 pw. I know this vid is old but it still gets me excited to know that it can be done with some upgrades. Very nice.
Nice overview, thanks. Surprisingly camper companies have removed almost all storage from these rigs. My 8” 2001 weighs just 1400 lbs and has under bed storage, wardrobe, pantry, kitchen cabinets, and drawers but still has all the same accessories as yours. Holds true, they don’t make them like they used to. Thanks again for the quality video
Love those Four Wheel Campers. I have a Bigfoot fiberglass truck camper on my F250 and also a Jeep ZJ. I have no problem tent camping with the Jeep but the truck camper is just so much more comfortable, especially with the wife. She has a full kitchen at her disposal for cooking and a place to escape the bugs and wind. I am working on a setup to flat tow the Jeep with the F250 to have the best or both worlds. The funny thing is it's cheaper to flat tow the Jeep with the F250 than it is to just drive the Jeep because the F250 gets better mpg and burns diesel which is less cost per gallon. We don't have AC in our camper either but so far it hasn't been a huge issue because we just go to high altitude or north in the summer. Sometimes we will take a break on the road and nap and then it can get hot.
Ordered a 22 hawk shell. No water, no fridge nothing to go wrong. Just heater, flush stove and solar. Got the grey smooth siding for my grey 2020 ram 2500 cummings. And ride right airbags with daystar cradles. And of course im on 35’s so gonna order the rigd spare tire swing out.
That is such a great setup Brad! I’m happy that it’s in your life! Thanks for all the work you do to create and share these videos. I’m always excited to see a new Trail Recon video! God speed brother.
Brad, that is an awesome rig. I love the low profile and all of the amenities it offers. I begin my van life in September and will begin the first leg from Virginia to San Diego. My daughter is flying from SD to help me drive and spend some time together as we don't see each other for months at a time. After 63 years of backpacking I'm leaving it to join the van lifers. I'm housesitting for my brother up at Lake Arrowhead in October so you might see me cruising around on his Custom Road Glide. My sister is allowing me to set up base at her house in Sacramento giving me access to the Northwest. I'm excited about seeing some of the bases and radar sites I was stationed on many years ago; however, I believe most of them are closed now. Anyway, I've always loved your channel and you've inspired me to get out and see places I would normally not visit. I hope to meet you and Marco some day on the road. Take care and be safe.
Brad, You are blessed to have a family that enjoys getting out with you. With your sweet Truck / camper setup you are going to have a blast with your adventures and a happy wife with you! Keep the great content coming, great job on this and all your videos. V.
We've been looking at these for a few years now and are finally getting closer to actually doing something about it. I have to say that your review is hands-down, the best I've seen on UA-cam! Thank you! Very informative and thorough. Hope you enjoy your new Hawk! 👍🏻
I have a full size with a fifth wheel but I still do the jeep tent setup . Roughing it out there is the part I love most. Congrats on your new slide in trailer. Hope it works out for u. I personally enjoyed more of your old jeep videos. Maybe one day you will go back to a jeep. Keep up the overlanding either way!
Very nice setup! The slide in camper also would allow someone to pull behind a jeep in many of the trailers made from old truck beds. I know you already have a trailer with RTT, so that wouldn't be needed for your family, but others might consider if they already have an old truck bed trailer.
How old ARE you? I'm 65 and I just bought my FWC Hawk 5 months ago for a 2 year tour of North and South America. I'm just dying for the Canadian border to open so I can spend 2-3 months exploring Canada and AK on and off road before heading south!
@@mattdalton8149 He has the extra insulation "thermal pack" so it stays nice and warm, and one of the 10 lb propane tanks lasts about 3 nights in freezing weather. I generally keep mine in the low-mid 50s and get even more. There are 2 ten lbs tanks, and that lasts me a solid week of cooking and heating
He’s gone the other side. No more rock crawling for him now. 😁 I’ve explored a couple of routes to build an adventure vehicle. First was getting a RAM PW but having the camper on the aluminum flatbed. I also looked at van options. Test drove the MB 4x4 Sprinter and also the RAM 3500 Promaster. Couldn’t decide on which flat form so last summer, I rented a full size FORD Tribute camper van and set out for an adventure in the Canadian Rockies- it was a great experience however as you can imagine, the van have limited capabilities in terms of driving on difficult terrain- you’ll end end at campsites and boondocking could be a challenge too. Cost also comes into play for both options (forget about where to park both behemoth when you’re back in the city). So 2 months ago I ordered a ‘21 4R TRD Pro (can’t wait to get deliver so I can start my overland build) as I was inspired by some of TrailRecon’s video. AND NOW THIS? I’ve always suspected this built when he picked up the RAM PW and with the suspension upgrades recently. He’s gone other side! 🤣✌️🍁
Beautiful setup. You'll get countless years of use from it. We currently have a f250 7.3 with a Hallmark. It's the only camper we've owned that hasn't fallen apart. The Four Wheel are very comparable. We see them in the desert of idaho and Nevada. Unfortunately we are selling our through Hallmark. I have lower back fusion, and getting in and out of the bed is just getting too tough. We never planned to sell. Enjoy your awesome setup. Wish we could continue to enjoy ours.
Haha - when I saw this I was thinking that you look like a kid on Christmas morning. It really came through that the reason you're so excited is that this enables you to share your passion for the outdoors with your wife. Great review as always - love the setup.
Low profile is a pretty big deal when you encounter side flowing wind. But what I tell everyone is--watch your weight. I have this camper, only I have shell only (at 700 pounds) the lightest I am aware of. All aluminum frame, lightest out there to my knowledge. We have it on a 1/2 ton truck, and it is advertised as not needing more, but we can exceed weight soooooo easily--and we pull a small boat. Be careful, 3/4 ton truck is much, much better.
Can you get to the back from the front cab. Having kids that would be huge to have. Congratulations that’s awesome jealous so jealous and thank you for serving. Your entire family thank you for all you’ve done. Aloha from Maui
I love my simple setups - Taco w/ topper when 4wd needed, low-budget econoline van stripped for carrying MTB and moto's, and newer mini-van for road trips, but this is the end-goal. Comfort is inevitable : ) Great build
Glad you found a way to get your wife out into the backcountry with you more often Brad! Been working on the same thing with my wife. We were fly camping and our super Cub for a few years, but her dietary issues made it impossible, moved to the truck camper, and a nice overland trailer I built up from a Smitty built. Started traveling the country in a super c this summer, but I'm hanging on to the small units once we do what we want to do with the super c
Brad in a emergency situation say the Wagon doesn’t start & forget about the batteries on board in the camper. They say staying in your vehicle is bad so what is the difference between the cabin insulation & the pop up camper? Les Stroud told stories of people traveling getting caught in blizzards in the middle of nowhere. Sure they were caught off guard & didn’t have essentials.
Just add a Jackery solar battery and panels in 1000 or 1500 and you are set. I love mine. Plus you can plug into your camper. Really dig your ride and camper. Thanks for sharing.
Funny how the evolution always goes in the more comfortable direction. Love the shower. I don't care if it takes a little effort to set up. This rig is about comfort. Right?
Most people regret buying the shower option, and only use it once. I got the outdoor shower, and added a privacy curtain from Zero Declination. Sets up in a second, and never gets water inside the camper.
In deed how the evolution always goes more comfortable, couple weeks back my wife and I did a one nighter at this BLM campsite which had an area for RV's. The owner came over to check out my jeep/gladiator setup with my RTT. He was a jeep guy and started telling me he started off camping out of his jeep. Eventually graduating into similar camper on this video. After couple years they upgraded again and into a RV. Wonder if that's the next upgrade for Brad 😃
Really cool camper. I wonder if you still have it...and if not, why not? I'll go look through your old vids to see if you've already talked about this....anyway. Very cool! Thanks for showing us around.
Love it! I never really considered truck bed campers until I started watching DownToMob's channel. Now that is my dream setup. Once the 4Runner goes I am going to get a truck and a bed camper.
Nice rig!!! Gotta keep the wife happy... AC would be a nice addition, then you need to add a generator, then carry more water, then you need to bring your trailer.
When I lived up in the Pacific Northwest, I would see many slide in campers. They usually had turnbuckles on the 4 corners of the camper that would help secure the camper to the truck bed. They were located close to where the jack lifting plates are. There were brackets that would come out of the 4 corner pockets of the bed or be secured to a bracket that mounted to the bottom of the truck bed. This can easily slide out on a steep up hill slope.
I hope you love it! I hated mine. I sold it after two years. Set it up, take it down, set it up, take it down, etc. It gets old really fast. Pop-ups are best for people who go to one place, set up, stay for 4+ days, take it down, then go home. They aren't for people like me who sometimes only spends one night at a place. Mine wasn't tall enough to hang-out inside when the top was down. Perhaps yours is.
Nicely done Brad! The older we get the more one appreciates basic comforts. It’s got everything you need, and a smiling wife! Looking forward to your adventures with this rig.
You’re on the same path as my parents. Started off with…jeep, then ram with pop up bed camper, now it’s the same truck, no camper pulling travel trailer.
I've owned a FWC. Pretty sure it was just an oversight while filming, but I noticed you let the strap on the back panel get caught in it. On that back interior support, don't forget to wrap the strap around the knob (just above the mirror), and then snap it. Pressure keeps the bi-fold in place, but snapping that strap is added security.
I love those Four Wheel Campers, I love oddball and rare campers period. You guys are going to have a blast with that rig, enjoy! Currently watching the vid from our Trailmanor pop up. I still love tent camping but it's nice to have some of the creature comforts sometimes. It's nice to have options based on the type of adventure.
We had that model for about 9 months a few years back. Loved the low profile and it looks cool on the truck. We had ours on a built tundra...Great camper for the desert when the wind is below 10 kts. Unfortunately it’s not that great in places where the wind blows and it rains. We live in the northwest and battled condensation and nearly lost the roof to several windy days along front range in Montana.. Thanks for the video..
Open the turn buckle access panel and stuff in your shoes and stinky clothes. They stay dry and air out. Also hitch stairs make a world of difference. Lastly check out froli sleep system to improve the bed feel. I haven't gotten it yet but I want to make that upgrade.
Built Power Wagon MSRP 66K (can get a better deal)Hawk camper 20K Minus 4-5K per month not staying in hotels cooking own meals. We stay out 2-3 months. Go anywhere vehicle over 5 year period 46K. Phenomenal deal. Have a good life and don't be so knee-jerk
@@forkintherode8236 A loaded Hawk camper is closer to $35k. Look it up. Not many “deals” on new vehicles right now either. If you are staying in hotels, eating your meals out, you’re not really doing it. The way he has his set up with the 37” tires he’s probably getting 12 mpg on a good day with an approximately 2000# wet load. I’ve been wheeling and adventuring since the mid 80’s and something that big isn’t “go anywhere “ especially if you don’t want to beat it up. It is very capable though. I guess if you think this outfit is “a phenomenal deal” then that old saying about a fool and his money applies. Most of the people who buy these expensive, fancy rigs never truly wheel them. But they sure look good sitting in the driveway. Gravel roads, forest service roads and some light trails are about it for most people and a Subaru will work for this. Everyone thinks they are an expert when they haven’t really thought out what they are commenting on. Have a good day.
I love the FWC Hawk and plan to order one in a few years, after I purchase my F-150. I like the shell of the FWC, but the utility systems (furnace, water heater, electrical, etc) are old school and I want a more modern all electric setup. I'm considering just ordering a Hawk shell model and having it upfitted by a custom van builder in New Jersey called Humble Road. George, the guy who owns it is an amazing craftsman and innovator and I am confident he'd build an amazing truck camper. I reached out and asked if he'd do it and, although he's never built out a truck camper before, he is definitely up for it. Also, that hardware they used to secure the camper to the bed appears to be rather weak. I'm sure it's probably fine, but I expected to see beefier hardware than that. I'll have to remember to ask about that when the time comes for me.
Man I hope you have a good accountant… between the bonus depreciation and California film industry tax credits… manage this right and I think you might not pay taxes this century
I was going to buy the same setmup. However the max payload of the Power Wagon will be exceded ( The Power Wagon has the lowest payload of all Ram 2500's) once you are loaded with gas, water, batterys, propane, gear and people. Furthermore Those 2500 Rams have a rear coil spring that is mounted too far inboard on the axle and it makes the truck sway at highway speeds. I was told this by nurmorus people in the "Ram World" Other then that I love the look of the set up!! And I love your Channel/Content!
Same problem I had to with the PW. It is still the BEST HD truck for off road use, however it has some serious limitations that come with its awesome features. Each user has different needs. I ended up going with F-250 7.3 with 4.30 and rear locker. I have wide connected rear leaf springs, 3,000 payload, plenty of deep gears for bigger tires/towing/off road. I can install the ford OEM winch later. All I’ll miss is front locker (which I can do after market), the awesome PW skid plates, and the awesome PW suspension articulation (however I NEED stiffer suspension for payload/towing). The Ford just works better for my needs.
Cool man! I personally would probably omit the indoor toilet and shower… the outdoor shower with a simple pop up privacy tent would be fine. And you can put a toilet in that as well. But to each their own
Mopeka makes a propane level sensor that works over Bluetooth, it can be a little finicky but it works pretty well. In the App it only has 20 pounds and larger tank settings but there is also an enter your own size option so I think it would work for you.
We love our FWC! Ours is on a Toyo Taco 4wd and it gets us to places that most regular vehicles can't get to. It'll never do the Rubicon Trail but that's ok. We love Death Valley and the desert in general and ours has withstood some SERIOUS desert wind! There were times I was sure we would get blown away in 60 -70 mph gusts but the camper was fine...we didn't sleep much at night though!
I have a 2017 FWC Fleet. It’s been great. You’ll especially like it when the weather is bad outside. BTW, there’s a mod you can do to the fan to slow it down. That should quiet it down and reduce the power draw.
Excellent choice Brad! Wish I knew you were buying one up here I'm in Sacramento and sell Rv's and I know that place well. You're going to love having this on the back of that Power Wagon!
Thanks for the great video. I get excited whenever you post videos. I never thought about over-landing or camping but after viewing your videos; I’m truly inspired to get a pickup truck and create a similar setup. Maybe one day we can do a trip together, I’m in Northern California. Please keep up the great content. We truly appreciate it.
Congratulations! We've had our Hawk for about three years now and it's been just right. No, we don't do hard core technical trails, but visits to places like Toroweep in the Grand Canyon are no problem. And we've slept down to 10 degrees on week-long winter trips in cozy comfort. I would not go back!
Modified Torklift fastguns will speed up the process of tying down the camper on your truck. They are made down to 14.5 inches but if they are too long you can shorten them to fit your needs. 3 seconds for each turnbuckle. They also made with integrated shock absorbers.

Really cool camper. I wonder if you still have it...and if not, why not? I'll go look through your old vids to see if you've already talked about this....anyway. Very cool! Thanks for showing us around.
Very cool, Brad! Can't wait to see some beautiful sunrise coffee footage outside this rig!
Nice, very convenient can’t wait the adventures videos.
YesSiRr!! Definately A DREAM CAMPER MACHINE!! LOL!! WOW!! Not bad... I LIKE IT!! 100%
Fine looking setup, enjoy your time with it , looking forward to seeing more of the POWER WAGON 👍🏻
Navy Shower , oh yeah been there done that. Nice video.
Nice . You didn't missed any details.
Love your videos.
Hi Chief! no Hollywood showers here, just the good ole Navy shower!!
Open the turn buckle access panel and stuff in your shoes and stinky clothes. They stay dry and air out. Also hitch stairs make a world of difference. Lastly check out froli sleep system to improve the bed feel. I haven't gotten it yet but I want to make that upgrade.
Poor Chief.. long forgotten about lol. Nice setup Brad!
Cotter pins for those turn buckles!
Years ago I had a 9 1/2' Lance slide-in with solar panels on the roof. Best investment I made on that camper.
Can’t wait to see some adventure content featuring this set up, detailed and entertaining as always Brad. Awesome.
Coming soon!
Awesome. We’re in the market for next year as long as prices don’t go through the roof. This was very informative, thank you.
Brad, you're showing your Navy. "Shore power" Love it!
That's what 26 years will do... it's ingrained in me!
"Shore power" is the common vernacular in RV speak
I spent four years in the Navy but I'm not an RV person so I learned something today. Thanks.
That setup is perfect for my wife and me. Great value with a very capable vehicle
Great value? The setup is probably over $120,000. In what universe is that a great value?
I looked up the numbers (not too of line stuff)your way off use your imagination
@@forkintherode8236 are you illiterate or what. What are you trying to say in your last post?
Built Power Wagon MSRP 66K (can get a better deal)Hawk camper 20K Minus 4-5K per month not staying in hotels cooking own meals. We stay out 2-3 months. Go anywhere vehicle over 5 year period 46K. Phenomenal deal. Have a good life and don't be so knee-jerk
@@forkintherode8236
A loaded Hawk camper is closer to $35k.
Congratulations on your new toys. I was looking at those and the project M. Keep us posted on how you like it.👍👍
Looks like an excellent setup. Thanks, Brad
That setup looks comfortable enough to travel for months on end. Very cool!
In two years.... “Check out our new 45’ Diesel Pusher Class A RV!!!” 😄
LOL! Maybe when I'm 70 and they offer it in a 4x4
@@TrailRecon Lol! That would be cool! 4x4 bus! Thanks for the videos!!
We camped in a tent for 1 year my wife hated it - we now own the Diesel pusher and it pulls our wrangler to trips.. lol
Global Expedition Vehicle? 4x4 or 6x6.
Man I hope you have a good accountant… between the bonus depreciation and California film industry tax credits… manage this right and I think you might not pay taxes this century
Good to see more trails for full size truck.
Awesome build, Brad! Excited to see all the adventures to come!
Thank you!
Very informative 🙌 one of the best four wheel camper walk around/reviews ✌️
nice set up Brad. You guys will enjoy it a lot I think. You could always bring her Jeep along if you wanted to.
Cool man! I personally would probably omit the indoor toilet and shower… the outdoor shower with a simple pop up privacy tent would be fine. And you can put a toilet in that as well. But to each their own
POWERCAMPER! Congratulations!
Congratulations! Very nice rig. Thankyou for a great new video. Y’all all take care and be safe.
Mopeka makes a propane level sensor that works over Bluetooth, it can be a little finicky but it works pretty well. In the App it only has 20 pounds and larger tank settings but there is also an enter your own size option so I think it would work for you.
Really, really nice set-up. Have fun.
It's not Really, really, really ?
Well deserved glamping! We installed a simple battery operated digital thermostat for that perfect homeostasis.
Man you have a bunch of options now. Nice set-up!
Very cool that will provide you an your wife some great comfort an not impede on your adventures. Looks good brad as always be safe 👍👍👍👍👍
We have the thermal pak too and it does help.
Oh and something else...check your turnbuckles if you have them...I've broken two so far...
The shower clothes sold on Amazon are also a great way to shower in a pinch. "Top and tail" shower if you know that one.
Great looking setup... So happy for you and your wife.
Thanks 👍
Havn’t used one myself but many say that self inflating air mattress works to fix hard bunks and sectional bunks!
That's an awesome setup. Not pulling a trailer would be a huge plus for me.
Nice video, I live a mile from the 4wheel factory, great people.
SUPER cool. Love the all white. Congrats & good luck
Thanks so much!!
Modified Torklift fastguns will speed up the process of tying down the camper on your truck. They are made down to 14.5 inches but if they are too long you can shorten them to fit your needs. 3 seconds for each turnbuckle. They also made with integrated shock absorbers.
Congrats, Brad.
