Yeah, he blends country, bluegrass, blues, R&B. This is because demographically speaking, these genres all some from the same basic sociological group---- blue collar and agricultural people.
For instance, he comes from coal mining country.
Someone who drives a garbage truck can connect with the coal miner because they're both working for a living in dirty, frustrating blue collar jobs.
This song cuts straight to the heart. The melody and harmonies in this song are truly special and touch me every time that I hear this song which has been hundreds of times. The lyrics are so poignant too. Who can't relate to those lines, " I'm bettin' on you and you're bettin' on me."
It makes me want to grab my wife and kid and hell even the dog and hug them tight. Thank you Chris for this touching and inspirational song.
After October 7 2023 and all that is happening in the world and the US ,I needed a day of healing ,so I spent the day listening to Chris . He touches my soul and provides balm for her. Same here Nat. I'm not even sure that you can call his music "Country" though. To me .. C. Stapleton reminds me of some others who were never considered to be country music musicians at all .. such as Bob Seger, Jim Croce or James Taylor.
I like to call it "Americana Music". Songs that are basically about the 'American Experience' or the places in America that the singer is either from .. or has been to .. or longs to get back to .. Not that 'Country' doesn't have songs that employ the same subject matter .. but the music and his 'Vibe' is really different from Country. I think one reason people call him 'Country' is his use of the '10-String Pedal Steel Guitar.' Known for its portamento capabilities, gliding smoothly over every pitch between notes, the instrument can produce a sinuous crying sound and deep vibrato emulating the human singing voice which is most often associated with 'Country Music Songs & Standards.' Stapleton does a great job blending different instruments together and incorporating the various sounds that they produce into his own unique style of writing. He's really good and he's getting better all the time. Maybe feature some Piano / Organ parts and how do you think a SAX would sound with his tunes ???

It always caught my attention but I never took the time to find out the title of the song or who sings it. Until one day I did.
Listened to it on repeat on my 45 minute commute to work this morning. Oh how I cried...
Reminded me the young love I once had for my ex husband. He was a Star in my eyes that shined so bright. As newly weds, then new parents we moved around a bit those first years. All he had to do was say the word and I was ready and willing to pack up every thing we had to move to the next location.
I remember being 19, 9 mths pregnant with our first born loading up all our stuff in our little car to leave his parents house in Texas and driving to South Dakota to chase his Dream.
So much has changed these last 20 years. Its been a loooong time since I felt the feeling this song gives me ❤
