EVERY SINGLE Lightsaber Type And Variant Explained [Canon + Legends]

  • The lightsaber is probably the most iconic weapon in all of Sci-Fi. Although most Jedi and Sith opted for the standard, single-bladed lightsaber, there were in fact some truly unique lightsabers, with truly unique properties. In today’s video, we will take a look at every single lightsaber type, both from canon and legends. We'll be exploring no less than 40 different lightsaber variants in this video, so make sure to grab a drink and a snack as this will be one of my longer videos. I've roughly ordered this list from most to least common, so make sure to stick about until the end for the most interesting and rare lightsaber variants.
Check out VF Sabers here➡️ vfsabers.com/
First up we have the most common form of lightsaber. The single-bladed lightsaber with a regular hilt length. There was good reason for their popularity. They were versatile, allowed the user a full range of movement and could be used either with one or two hands. They were also relatively easy to build compared to many other sabers we will discuss later on in this video. They did not require complex parts nor did they require rare or extra lightsaber crystals. Overall, these sabers were very useful in a wide range of different scenarios, meaning they were by far the most popular.
Next, we have the standard double-bladed lightsaber. The most common form of the double-bladed lightsaber was similar to Darth Maul’s. Typically the hilts were around twice the length of a regular saber, allowing the wielder to easily use two hands in combat. It is believed that the first double-bladed Lightsabers of this kind were based on the Zabrak quarterstaff or Zhabooka.
Double-bladed Lightsabers of this kind were almost always used by the Sith. Although some Jedi used them, it was very uncommon. This was largely due to the sheer amount of aggression required to effectively wield a blade such as this. Most double-bladed lightsaber wielders used form 7, the forbidden lightsaber form that had a heavy focus on acrobatics and power blows.
Jedi that did use double-bladed lightsabers were forced to fight with a more aggressive fighting style, with Pong Krell being a notable example. Pong Krells Lightsabers differed slightly from the more common double-bladed lightsaber. First of all they were absolutely massive and may even qualify as great Lightsabers which we will discuss later on in the video. Second of all, they were hinged, similar to the double-bladed sabers used by the Jedi temple guards and Rey Palpatine in the Sequel films. This did have an advantage compared to a regular double-bladed lightsaber. Not only were they more portable but they could swing around and trap the blade of the enemy.
Another common double-bladed lightsaber variant were the ones used by the inquisitors. These were some of the most sophisticated and complex lightsabers. However, this also made them very susceptible to malfunction. Unlike most double-bladed lightsabers, their hilts were no longer than a regular lightsaber. This allowed the Inquisitors to use the saber either as a regular, single-bladed lightsaber or as a double-bladed lightsaber. The Inquisitor's Lightsabers could also spin at extremely high speeds. This could be used as a means of intimidation or as a way of aggressively attacking their opponents, while also allowing the inquisitors to fly through the air. Unfortunately, these added functions made them more susceptible to damage, with many Jedi using the weaknesses of these blades to quickly defeat the Inquisitors, unfortunately making these sabers quite ineffective.
We’ll be moving on from double-bladed Lightsabers for now, and examining the lightsaber of Kit Fisto. Now at first glance, this is no different from a conventional, single-bladed lightsaber. However, this was not the case. Unlike most Lightsabers, Kit Fisto's lightsaber contained two Kyber Crystals, employing a complex system known as a bifurcating cyclical ignition pulse. Unlike most sabers, which would immediately short out upon contact with water, Kit Fisto was able to use his lightsaber underwater. After Kit Fisto discovered this lightsaber alteration, he recorded it within the Jedis great Holocron. Later Luke Skywalker would make this lightsaber variation standard for all sabers within his new Jedi Order.
Next up we have another saber that at first glance, would appear to be the same as an ordinary single-bladed lightsaber. However, it contained a very rare lightsaber crystal known as a lava crystal that could only be found in the deepest depths of volcanic planets.

I think double bladed are practical, they would just take way more training irl. Double bladed weapons exist in history and were effective, but it being a lightsaber that can kill you when you touch it can't help. Crossguard probably wouldn't be effective, the lightsaber blade is just as heavy as any, so the guard weighs it down, it constricts wrist movement, with real great swords, your hand naturally hits the guard, with this lightsaber you have to be careful not to chops your arm off

    • @generaljesus9825

@@bluefalcon6356 Someone who knew anything about European swords would never use the term "great sword." Besides, the blade of a lightsaber is weightless (except when using certain crystals), and there are several ways to create a more usable crossguard, such as the case of Stellan Gios.
Throughout history, however, double-ended swords were unfavorable because they required much more extensive training than most other weapons. They were also more expensive to produce. They are dangerous and ineffective because of the two extra blades on the opposite end. It requires two hands to use, and only has the advantage of four long blades, but is still better used as a spear, which is cheaper to produce and easier to use.

I somewhat disagree with the assessment that dual blade sabres required a more aggressive style. They are basically a staff, and as a moderately trained staff wielder myself, it is difficult to go on the offensive if your hands cannot travel the full length of the staff. The staff is however perfectly suited to defense, and even without much training, a staff user can put up a formidable defense against most opponents.

You know how the new girl in the new star war trilogy? How she's been using a staff her whole life and then suddenly got good at using a regular light saber and being self thought? It would have made more sense if he used a dual bladed saber as it's more a kin to a staff and would makes sense in her skill of weilding it and not just "Oh she was one with the force that's why she's so good"

My dream saber follows Shadiversity's theory of the Stick. It's outward (deactivated) appearance would be that of a wooden staff slightly longer than the pike. Usable as a walking stick, or for not lethal force
but within this "wooden" staff is a beskar pipe housing twin sabers emitting a 9 inch blades from each end and an extra large central battery, for when lethal force is necessary.
Backed up with a utilitarian and/or stealthy lightdagger

Granted the ai in blade and sorcery arent designed to block blaster bolts but I believe it could surprise any sith or jedi who wasnt expecting it.

Great video, I'm a instant fan and hope you can keep making these kinds of videos about any kind of lore. I'm sure if you knew this or not but mauls was unique in the fact that his saber (sabers) was actually made with twin crystals. That's why it still works when it was cut in half. Basically regular sabers welded together in the middle or something like that to keep them connected. Which was a brilliant idea seeing how he knew that it would be the primary target of the 2 jedi since it is considered a serious vulnerability of the double blade.

The lightwhip would have to win an award for worst weapon design. As if a regular whip isn't already impractical enough as a weapon, making it out of something that can maim or kill even with a light touch is a virtually guaranteed way to kill the weapon's wielder.

    • @njnjco

that's for normal people though, we're talking about a force-sensitive who could use the force to affect the blade and how it travels. you're also not taking into account how with a normal whip, the only damaging part is the tip at max range while the lightsaber whip could kill/maim at any range. with enough specialized training, it can be one of the most deadly weapons in the universe. even in combat against other lightsaber wielders too, as you can get your whip around their lightsaber and yank it out of their grasp, but if they tried using your lightsaber, they likely wouldn't know how. i see where you're coming from though :)

Not all modern lightsabers can be thrown like you describe it. Similar to the double phase saber a lightsaber needs to be customised to be able to throw it by making a lockable activation switch (Anakin had one for example) when used the lightsaber would always stay on until the button is pressed again.
However as this can become dangerous to the wielder most Jedi use a contact switch which is the reason why lightsaber auto deactivate when they get unarmed as to not hurt the wielder should he lose grip on his blade (as seen in many fights like the fight of Obi-Wan against Jango)

I really like the saber staffs of the Temple guards as it’s portable and is very good at combating multiple enemies at once. Other than that it is very versatile too. Instead of using it like a staff, it can also be used like a spear as you can present one blade to the opponent to maintain distance and defense while having the blade in the back ready for a fast chain of attacks when combined with the blade in the front. Temple guard sabers and other saber staffs that use two kyber crystals are also able to be used single bladed which minimizes it’s disadvantages in tight spaces. :)

Imagine a saber with a slightly longer length hilt with 4 crystals inside, 3 on one side and 1 on the other. The primary side has a standard length blade and a short blade as well as a light whip. You would only attack rarely with the whip and if the surprise failed to kill them than use the standard blade. On the other side would be a slightly shorter blade mostly used for defence if they go for a low blow. Pop it on to block and than turn it off again. I would have this and a blaster on my belt.
