    What was your favorite moment from this cover?? IMO one of Geoff's best arrangements ever -- I never expected an acapella version of this piece to work so well! Brilliant work to Geoff and VP 👏

    • @toddreed882
      @toddreed882 Рік тому +8

      My favorite was the build up to and then the chord just before Layne started playing on the violin…then of course, the violin solo.

      I’ve never heard the original but now I gotta look it up. The intense vioLayne section was really nice but I can’t decide whether the chord RIGHT before the violin came out is my favorite section, or Geoff’s solo a bit earlier. It was very nice and it’s incredible how he transitions between notes (the low G). Seamless

      @Gael4ce Рік тому +11

      *splutters* Favorite moment?!? Like…one?! Ok dude, the one bit between the first and last notes? 😝😂
      Seriously though…when Layne first drops that beat you know it’s about to get real. Then they build up and up and then there’s this light floaty moment where Cesar and Geoff try to con you into thinking things are calming back down(didn’t fool me. I’ve heard enough of Geoff’s arrangements to know he puts more than one sucker punch in if at all possible) and then they just explode.
      First time I heard it, I think I quit breathing when Layne dropped the beat. I know I got dizzy well before the violin and realized I needed to breathe again.
      This arrangement just HITS in all the right feels. I loved the original. but I’m not sure I’ll bother playing it again. It. ever grabbed me by the threat and shook me like VoicePlay just did.
      The original never put tears in my eyes. This one does.

      My favorite section is from when they're all harmonizing "All these words I don't just say..." to the end of the Violayne part. Of course, if I have to pick just one moment, I'd go with the majority on the "YEAH! BOOM VioLAYNE!" Literal chills.

      @@Snapdragonflie They just released a Violayne t-shirt. The front says “Violayne” with their logo replacing the o, and back says “a capella: It’s better with instruments”.

    Your expression when VioLayne happened was worth the whole reaction. This cover broke most of the reactors. I think Geoff did an epic arrangement for this one. I love how in the description of the video they even call him VioLayne! And it's always great to see J. None when he's on leave. He may not technically be an official member of Voiceplay at the moment, but you can tell he's still a member at heart. ✌️❤️🥕🎻

    Geoff had done a guitar solo for Layne that shows toward the end of Metalllica's piece. At the last minute Geoff wanted Layne to do it with the violin which I thought was just perfection. It colored all the high notes that J, Eli and Cesar were absolutely knocking out of the park. To me, VP really paid homage to the original while keeping their version intact. Just spectacular. I was happy that we finally got VioLayne 3 yrs after Warriors.

      I could be wrong, but I believe Geoff mentioned he was a Tenor before his balls dropped. I also believe Tim Foust was the same. That's why they have such crazy vocal ranges. They abject refused to just let the "tenor within" die just because their bodies decided otherwise. Then they discovered that working so hard to preserve as much of their higher registers as possible actually made them even better bass singers.

      I wonder if that was something he thought when he was running around the Sing Off hanging out with Avi and Tim until he really started hitting those lower chest notes. Also, he's said he's a very quiet singer. I wonder if he called himself a baritone because that was where he could start projecting.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Рік тому +16

      @@MuriKakari, I believe it's because he didn't realize what his voice actually was... from so many years of wanting to be a rock tenor. I was the same way - in a way - until I first heard Geoff. I am a choral bass singer who always hung out above C2 (often above E2), despite having a chest voice that goes down to E1 and chest-fry to C#1. After I heard what these a cappella basses were doing, I decided to explore my own voice, and found it went MUCH lower AND higher than I ever thought possible.

    • @MuriKakari
      @MuriKakari Рік тому +10

      @@johndeeregreen4592 That makes a lot of sense. As a female singer, my voice had always been classified as an alto by choir directors, but I was similarly always able to go lower comfortably where as I was less comfortable with even just the top end of a normal alto range. So basically, he finally stopped claiming to be a baritone when he decided he actually wanted to be Thurl Ravenscroft instead of a Rock Tenor

      In one of his Q&A videos, Geoff mentions he feels most comfortable in and around the C3-C4 range. But I think he was being modest, because like Peter said in this video, Geoff sounds super comfy down to E2 or D2 as well.

      @@Stan_S_Stanman, it's not just that he doesn't sound strained but that his thickness is there, too. In 2021, Elton John called Nothing Else Matters one of the best songs ever written. It's so beautiful. I'm glad VoicePlay did this. Their version is stunning.

    Was waiting for your reaction. As always, you point out so much. Not to mention your eyes at VioLayne! Just a side note - that has to be the most sedate I can recall seeing Cesar. But his singing always speaks for itself, with or without theatrics. It's also scary how Cesar and Eli can give a vioin a run for the money.

    Geoff is awesome, and this arrangement is brilliant, but I have to say for myself that I was very excited to see Eli get a chance to shine with that Rock God tenor of his. This is the VoicePlay I love, when they can just sing and elevate a song and not over-use the extremes of their voices, which they have occasionally done in earlier arrangements. And I know I have seen a few people in comments have a “That’s not a cappella!” meltdown about the violin but they need to take a chill pill, all of the big a capella groups drop in an occasional instrument when it’s called for.

    First, love the analysis! This is truly one of my favourite things VP has done to date. What a way to start off the year. Second, re the great "is Geoff a bass or baritone" debate: I know Geoff thinks of himself as a baritone because of where he starts being able to project notes (which at least used to be C#2, D2ish). How important is projection really when classifying a bass? He certainly sounds like one, just with the ease/clarity/weight with which he can hit those notes, but that's on mic. How much does off-mic volume matter?

    Geoff definitely rules, and with this one he created a masterpiece ❤️ I love how they bring in the violin, it's like they mixed the original and the one Metallica did with The San Francisco Symphony.

Certain things they do have evolved into their signature so that I recognise it straight away as distinctly Voiceplay, yet they are never boring or predictable. I have been looking forward to your reaction and you certainly did not disappoint! Thank you for your excellent analysis and pointing out so many things that, others may have touched on but you expanded on.
    I’ve been trying to figure out why I love this so much although I don’t like metal. I did listen to the song and the song is amazing but I just don’t care for metal, so it didn’t appeal to me. I was trying to think of the adjective that describes the feeling I got. I kept thinking, wistful, melancholy, somber. But none of them really fit - intimate is the word I was looking for, and why it resonates so much with me.
    One of the things I truly love about VoicePlay is that each member has a distinctive voice. I really appreciate that. They let J’s soulful voice come out and didn’t try to make it “fit. Geoff has been reported as saying that you arrange for the voices you have, not the voices you want. And it works so well.
    I don’t know why, but my favorite moment is when Violayne does that crescendo into the high note and the guys pick it up. I don’t know if they’re hitting that same note, but the transition is Perfect.
    I never ever thought anything they did could beat Hoist the Colours as my favorite. And never in a million years would I think that my all-time favorite of theirs would be a song originally, and famously, covered by a metal group. But …VoicePlay - they’re magical.

    I love this video, love your interpretations, the way you analyze from other UA-cam Reactors” your smile says everything. My favorite part of this particular video, , J , Eli & Cesar hitting all the notes, leaning back, feet coming off the floor, fist balling up, Yeah” 😀😀😀😀then the violin in thrown into the mix , I really cannot distinguish the high notes between Caesar & Eli in any event this is a masterpiece. The perfect blend !
