    VoicePlay arrangements are straight 🔥🔥🔥
They are so silly and funny, creative and talented.
The lineup from left to right is
    Geoff (Bass)
    J None (baritone)
Eli (pronounced L-E, rhymes with jelly, high tenor)
    Cesar (current baritone)
Layne (aka VioLayne, aka Carrot Lord, vocal percussion)
J None was a full time member of the group but he left to sing with the US Navy. He still collabs as often as he can and most of us are hoping he'll come back full time eventually.
All these guys have crazy huge ranges and are incredibly versatile.
Really enjoyed your reaction! ❤ If you wanna see Geoff go even lower, check out "Valhalla Calling." He holds a sustained B0 in that one!

Yay!!! I recommended VoicePlay to you. They fly under the radar a bit because they are independent but they are insanely talented and creative. I saw some other commenters gave you the lineup. I really hope you will react to more of these guys, they never disappoint no matter what cover you choose! You don’t have to blur them because you won’t have copyright issues. They are reactor friendly. Have fun!! ❤

I'm afraid not getting blocked isn't the only thing that makes an artist 'Reactor friendly'. This is how I feed my kids and most of our videos get demonetised because youtube doesn't provide any reasonable way to dispute copyright claims. Even with the blurring this one got demonetised. I work too long and hard to not take the necessary steps to ensure I have the best chance of getting monetised.
I know you guys don't get the same viewing pleasure but you're not actually supposed to. One of the stipulations for 'fair use' (which is what reactions should fall under) is that we don't provide the same viewing and listening experience as the original

It's not just how deep his voice is (and yes, it absolutely is one of the deepest in the industry!) but there's just something uniquely special about his tone... I can't quite put my finger on it, but as much as I appreciate all bass singers out there, Geoff's voice simply draws me into the music like nobody else can.

These guys are a treat every time. It doesn't matter if they sing opera, musical,
movie, game, jazz, evergreens, Disney, metal, rock, pop or anything else.
Over the years they have created quite a catalogue of songs, with members who have come and gone.
    The way they were placed in this and when they joined the group was;
    Geoff 1997, J 2018, Eli (Ellie) 2010, Cesar 2021 & Layne 1997.
They produce, arrange, light and film the videos themselves and they own their own work,
so it's not necessary to fade the videos when you react.
Thank you for a great reaction and welcome down the rabbit hole.

Geoff (the bass) arranged this one. They take turns arranging - and because they are fully independent, they do almost everything themselves. From arrangement to setting up the videos/lighting etc. They are so incredibly talented and thoroughly nice people too.
I personally like all their rock covers, but their genre range is insane - from Disney, to Rock, Gaming songs to Halloween and everything in between. Others to check out (from my biased pov!) "In the Air Tonight" (Phil Collins), "Dream On" (Aerosmith), "Creep" (Radiohead), "Seven Nation Army" (White Stripes) etc. However, if any other genre rocks your boat, choose it and a song - they never, ever disappoint. They do make songs their own while paying incredible homage to the original.
As for touring... well the guys are not super young anymore and have families. They toured extensively before COVID but not now.
Incidentally, legendary band Chicago heard this song and asked VP to join them for their 40th anniversary concert in November. VP killed it (live). You can maybe find some good quality vids of that online (but I think there will be TV ones coming out soon). Their rendition of "We don't talk about Bruno" (Encanto) was so good that Disney asked them to perform it live at a private event (there is a cellphone vid of that somewhere too).
Hoping you will have more VP soon!! 🌹🕊

There are several live VoicePlay performance videos circulating, of varying quality (most being captured on cellphone, so ymmv), but on their channel they have both a studio version of Grim Grinning Ghosts and a live performance of it that was shot following a show. I always thought that was a good way to demonstrate their live vs. studio sounds, even though those videos are rather old at this point (6 or 7 years back, I think). VoicePlay also have a series of videos called ACA Top 10's, and all of those appear to be recorded live. One of my favorite live performances is something a little different; when they were on the Sing Off tour (they participated in the same season as Home Free) they performed a skit called Road Trip that not only shows how well they perform live, it also gives you a good idea as to their offbeat sense of humor.
As to the guys themselves, from left to right you have Geoff Castellucci (bass singer, also the arranger of this piece), J. None (former baritone for the group, currently singing for the US Navy), Eli Jacobson (rhymes with 'jelly', short for Eliezer, he's VoicePlay's tenor, lighting engineer and sometimes arranger. Also all manner of character voices.), Cesar De La Rosa (newest member; bari-tenor) and Layne Stein (VioLayne, vocal percussion and baritone. Splits arranging duty with Geoff, and is co-owner of Pattycake Productions, a video production studio where a lot of their videos are shot.). VoicePlay is 100% independent, so everything you see and hear comes from them directly, including their arrangements and videos. They are easily on par with Home Free and Pentatonix, but have never benefited from the promotion the other two groups have received, and as a result they're not nearly as well known despite their prodigious talents. Check them out, dig deep- I promise you won't be disappointed! And if that weren't enough, Geoff has his own solo channel- he's his own rabbithole. You've heard his lows... you've yet to hear how high he can go.

Welcome to the VP rabbit hole! I stumbled upon them almost three years ago and they are incredible, I immediately became a patron for both them and Geoff (he does solo work also). A few notes:
    1) "Featuring" J None. You will see Featuring on almost all of their videos, because VoicePlay was traditionally a five-member group, and then in 2020 they first lost long-time member Earl (their VERY high tenor) due to 'personal reasons' and then later in the year J None, who was their baritone, left because he had been recruited by the US Navy for their choir. They were able to replace J with Cesar, but that still leaves them as a four-member group, and until they are able to get another member, you will almost always see a featured performer joining them.
    2) Eli is pronounced like 'Ellie', it's short for Eliezar.
    3) Geoff and Layne (and former member Earl) met back in middle school, so they've got a lot of history between them. Geoff and Layne do almost all the arranging, Eli has done some in the past and is supposed to be doing more in the future. (And several years ago he took over doing the lighting for the videos, it's amazing what these guys do on their own!)
    4) All of these guys have incredible ranges, so be prepared to be suprised what you will hear them do! Layne also started out decades ago as a baritone, and only took over beat-boxing when their original beat-boxer left. VoicePlay fans consider it a treat when we get to hear him sing as well as beatbox. And he obviously plays a mean violin also, LOL.
    5) Because of the shifting around of personnel, it's common not to recognize everyone in the group, depending on how long ago it was recorded. They were on 'The Sing-Off" the same year that Home Free won, and you will see the former members Earl (high tenor) and Tony (baritone) is some of the older videos. Tony left to work behind the scenes and he and Layne run PattyCake Studios and do their own videos, which are mainly Disney-based. And, until a few years ago, Geoff sported short hair, so I've seen reactors who have been stumped (What the heck? I hear Geoff, but I don't see him. THAT short-haired guy is Geoff???)

This cover was the one that the band Chicago saw and invited VP to do a 2 night concert with them just a few months ago. You can't go wrong with VP, just take a deep breath and jump down the rabbit hole. You'll not regret it. They affectionately known as The Theater Kids of the a cappella world. I strongly suggest Hoist the Colors, Oogie Boogie song, Dream On and Vallahla Calling. Members are from left to right Geoff, JNone who is currently serving in the US Navy, Eli (pronounced like jelly) Cesar who can hit high notes better than most sopranos, and Maine affectionately called VioLaine. Geoff and Laine are original members going back to high school. They are, in my opinion, the best a cappella group out there. Enjoy!!

since I am sure everyone else already told you about the line up, I can only mention again that the arrangement for this one was done by Geoff and he and Layne usually trade off who does the arrangement/directing of the month.
Additionally, for live performances, there aren't many with good sound quality in my opinion (the sing-off was so long ago they were a rather different band back then) but their live performance of "Elvira" from four years ago shows how much fun they are in a show (humour is unavoidable with this group), and they have a live version of one of their most popular songs "Oogie Boogie" from 2019 on UA-cam. Most recently they did a live gig with the band Chicago in November. But yeah, lower quality videos form the audience only.

Hi Charlie. I've subscribed so your videos announce themselves. What an amazing track - I'm watching on my mobile so only a very small area shows the performers. Did I hear you say only 5 people? That's astonishing, they are so talented, so in harmony. And I can understand every word. It was a joy to listen to this, thank you. When it first started I thought "similar to Seal?" and then it just progressed to something uniquely beautiful. Before googling them I'll wait to see what the comments produce - I love reading the history and back stories. Just great that reaction channels introduce me to artistes I probably wouldn't have heard of, (you may recall that I love Farnsey but I also love hearing new music in general - a world without music would be a very sad forlorn place.). Very deep baritone voices - was it Paul Robson - Old Man River - who had a very deep voice? I think he could have been before my time, I was born in 1944. Lovely video and reaction - thank you. E❤

There's a number of live Voicpelay performances on UA-cam and in their channel. Unfortunately, the best ones in term of sound and video quality are from the SingOff tour of several years ago, and they were in a very different lineup that wasn't exactly their cup of tea (they were required to have a female member, which they added, and to make songs that weren't "in their strings", and to care more about choreography and stuff...). BTW they were in that season of SingOff with Home Free, and the two groups are friends since... But I digress. So, the videos from that tour are of good quality, but they weren't at their best. There are other videos of their live performances, but they're usually taken by someone in the audience with a smartphone, and it's not exactly the same. Anyway, they are enjoyable nonetheless. I remember seeing videos of "Elvira", "The chicken song", "Road trip" (not exactly "a song" but absolutely hilarious), "Oogie Boogie song" and more.
In their older videos, usually the "ACA top 10..." were recorded live, if I'm not mistaken.
Oh, ad just recently they were invited by the band "Chicago" to perform live on stage with them, you can find that concert video on UA-cam, they had a blast! 😁
Currently, they are totally independent and manage all aspects of their work by themselves. Arrangements used to be made 50 % by Geoff (like this one) and 50% by Layne, with few exceptions, like their version of Radioheads' "Creep", or (older video) Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", which were both arranged by Eli (rhymes with "jelly") Jacobson. Starting this year, it seems that they will arrange about 1/3rd of the songs each. Who arranges the song is in charge of pretty much everything but the final audio mixing, which is made by Ed Boyer, and if required the "special make up", made by Rick Underwood. Geoff ("Jeff") Castellucci's wife, Kathy, is their Production Manager. Eli does lighting as well, and in "Valhalla calling" made all the background scenes with Unreal Engine, and then it was projected on a LCD wall in from of which they performed.
They also have a special sense of humour, which surfaces pretty often in their videos. And I love it. They take their JOB very seriously, but they don't take THEMSELVES as seriously. 😁
The group started in 1997 under the name of 4:2:Five, and changed into Voiceplay in 2012, if I remember correctly. They had a number of changes in the lineup during the years, but Huldra Draco kept track of all of them and made a video that is a fundamental guide to manage it all: ua-cam.com/video/R6WxCwHnebI/v-deo.html
As for what to explore in their channel, you pick a song and you kinda can't fail. They cover pretty much every genre, and they're GOOD. 😁
What else? Geoff Castellucci has his own solo channel, started when the pandemic disrupted touring (and more), where he does beautiful "Low bass singer covers" digitally cloning himself into 4 or 5 characters, sometimes with different costumes and/or makeups, and singing all parts. Another beautiful rabbit hole to fall into, believe me 😅.
Just subscribed in anticipation for more Voiceplay, and hopefully Geoff. And Home Free: I love both groups, they're great. Just a style preference for me, to be more into VP. 🙂

The lowest recorded note from Geoff is, I think, a B0. He did it 2X in their cover of Halo... Geoff arranged this one. The arranger records and sends out both a compilation and an individual part to each of them. They use that to practice, sometimes discuss changes, and to learn their parts. Then each records themselves in their home studios and sends it to the arranger for the primary edit. Then, when the arranger has finished, it goes on to Ed Boyer for the final edit. Meanwhile, since the arranger has the concept, he also takes responsibility for the the video - it's conception, direction, and full editing. Eli often does the lighting and if there are backdrops, Eli made them with gamer software. Historically, Geoff and Layne did most of the arrangements - Eli's done 2, (Creep and Eleanor Rigby) and we're told that going forward he'll be picking up an equal share, so each will be doing 1 every 3 months. (Usually they release 1 full and 3 shorts each month - this will make the work load more manageable.) Love your Dirty Loops t-shirt - they are absolutely one of my favorite bands ever! Liked and subscribed.

Geoff can sing bass, baritone and tenor. J can sing bass, baritone and tenor. Eli can sing bass, baritone and tenor. Cesar can sing baritone and tenor. Layne can sing bass, baritone and tenor. So going by what they sing in a song is not always the best way to figure out what "role" they have in the group 😅

VoicePlay does a wide array of covers. Most groups won't tackle something like this. Plus, the bass singer, Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci has his own channel, where he displays his five octave range with wonderful harmonies. One of his constant lowest bass covers is probably his cover of the Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold from the Hobbit.

I always love when a new person discovers Voiceplay!!! Allow me to introduce you to our favorite guys! Left to right...... You already know who Geoff Castellucci is. Human subwoofer with a 5 octave range and beautiful hair lol. He does about half the arranging for the group and also has his own solo, low bass cover channel. J. None, baritone with the silky R&B voice. This guy has incredible range and just such a lovely tone! Once a full member, now in the navy and guests with them whenever he can. Eli Jacobson (pronounced "Elly" like jelly!) little bald rockstar tenor that can blow the roof off the house. He also does an occasional arrangement for the group (see their cover of Creep) and most of the lighting and special effects for their videos. Cesar De La Rosa...baby of the group and newest member...angelic baritone/tenor voice that can melt butter, and all the sassy in his attitude! Can make you laugh one second, and break your heart the next. And finally, Layne Stein (Or "VioLayne" as he is becoming known...or "Carrot Lord" something you will discover in other videos lol) A M A Z I N G vocal percussion voodoo that I've never heard anyone else pull off. Beautiful singing voice when we actually get to hear him...and he does about half the arranging as well. So that is our boys! They are known as "The Theater Kids of Acapella" and if you watch more of their videos you will quicky see why!! Enjoy your journey down the rabbit hole!

Lots of good recs in the comments already; I'll toss in my votes for Hoist the Colours, Valhalla Calling, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Creep, We Don't Talk About Bruno, In The Air Tonight and the Moana Medley, but I could keep right on going. You just can't go wrong with these guys. They've got a new one coming down the pipeline soon that you won't want to miss, too.
Fun bit of trivia: you're correct that they pre-recorded Layne's beatboxing for when he was playing the violin, but it's not because he _can't_ beatbox and play at the same time. He can. It just looked kind of odd, so they decided not to have him do that.

I have said it before, Geoff deserves a Grammy for this arrangement. Didn't happen because its nearly impossible for independent artists. But it is a masterpiece.

And check out Geoff's solo stuff as well, the man is incredibly talented as well as genuinely humble.

Geoff can put those first octave notes in songs and actually sing them as part of a melody line. There's no point in producing a note 8 octaves lower if it's completely useless in any musical context IMO. That's why Geoff has my respect. He's very transparent about what notes he can and can't hit and he'll very rarely put notes that are at the very top or bottom of his range in his own arrangements (that's usually more of Layne's arrangements' thing, who is the beatboxer of hte group)

Welcome to VoicePlay! You had a lot of great observations. I can't wait for you to see more of the group. There aren't a lot of great videos of them live, but on their channel, if you go to one of their ACA Top 10's where they have mics set up in front of Geoff and Layne, those are live. They set up the camera and sing and do it in one go.
Also, Geoff has his own channel with his own non-acappella covers. He just dropped his new one today, Wicked Game. I love that you have a gramophone because Geoff's logo is a gramophone, and he owns a gramophone that he will try to sneak into his videos when it fits.
As others have pointed out, these guys are independent. They do nearly everything themselves. They create the arrangements, they do the first basic mix, they create the sets, they do the lighting, they pick the costumes. The only things they don't do are heavy prosthetic makeup which is done by Rick Underwood, steadycam (though they are able, they can't perform and run a camera at the same time), and the final mix of the music which is done by Ed Boyer.
You can always find good information, and often funny comments, in their description box.

Have a look at their loops. Something completely different. Why guessing their names btw.?

Geoff’s lowest note in this song, the E1, was achieved using a technique called subharmonics. Geoff uses subs as his preferred technique for reaching notes below G1 down to B0, though he can reach F1 using his chest voice. So as you asked at 3:28 , no it was not a bass note coupled with a bass drum, it was just Geoff hitting the E1 sub. 😊

This was an awesome arrangement by Geoff - as others have mentioned, it got them invited to sing live with Chicago for 2 nights back in November! • @jonadabtheunsightly

Nominally, Cesar (big fuzzy hair) is currently the baritone. But he can also sing tenor-1. J-None (next to Geoff) was previously the baritone (before the US Navy recruited him to sing bass with one of their singing groups), and he can also sing tenor. Layne used to be the group's main baritone for a while before he started beat boxing, and he can also sing tenor. Geoff classifies himself as a baritone, but he can sing tenor also. And Eli (bald) can also sing baritone, though he usually sings tenor. Yeah, they're not consistent about staying in their vocal lanes.
There are a *few* live performance recordings of them on UA-cam, mostly not on their channel. Elvira is a pretty good example, though it's several years old now (before Earl left). Of course there's also The Chicken Song.

There are at least three insanely talented Acapella groups right now. Voice play, Home Free, and Pentatonix among others. They all have base singers with really, really impressive range. They are also very different from each other. Voice Play are known as the theater kids of the Acapella world. Home Free have the country covered and Pentatonix do pop music and holiday songs. This is an over generalization obviously, but it gives you a place to start. Most of all of these people also have things they do on the side. Very, very impressive artists.

He is a world class cello player having performed at Carnegie hall. All 3 groups are insanely talented and cover All genres. People usually break it down as Pentatonix does pop. Home free does country. Voice play is considered the theater kids. Pentatonix won the sing off in season 3 which was 2011. In season 4 which was 2013 home free won and I'm pretty sure voice play took 4th place. Pentatonix blew The ceiling off of what acapella Can be. All 3 have extremely Loyal fans that will flock to whatever reactor Starts reacting to their videos. I know a few channels that essentially were built off of these 3 groups. Hi! You want info? You got it my friend! Here are some unofficial (but important!) rules for listening to Geoff/Voiceplay! (And also some individual info on them.) I just came up with them on my own, but after years of being a Voiceplaya, I've found they're necessary for optimal Voiceplay (and to a degree, Home Free as well) listening. If you've already got some of them down, know I'm just posting the list, not criticizing your reactor skills!
    The rules:
#1) VERY important! ALWAYS watch to the very end of the video, or at least a ways into the patrons scrolling. Often times it may LOOK like the video has ended, but there's an outro. Also, watching to the end lets you see their awesome cover art.
#2) Always leave the closed captions on. Geoff's wife Kathy (who helps with their videos, she also appears in some, such an amazing woman!) has hearing loss, so sometimes there will be little hidden gems in the CC.
#3) If you pause a video to speak, rewind it ten seconds before you start it again, to make sure you don't miss anything.
#4) Don't look away from the screen, or close your eyes for more than a second, because, again, you might miss a visual gag or clever moment.
#5) Don't go into their videos with expectations on what the song will be like, i.e., that it will be the same as the original. These guys put their own spin on things. The only thing to expect, generally, is to be blown away by their sheer talent.
#6) Unless you have a REALLY great speaker system with stereo sound, ALWAYS wear good headphones/earbuds with Voiceplay and Geoff. They do amazing little tricks you can only pick up with those hearing devices. Plus, some of Geoff's notes are so low you practically can't hear them without headphones
Oh, and FYI, Voiceplay is: (Left to right facing the screen.)
    .
Geoff Castellucci. (Said Jeff Cas-teh-lou-chee) He's the bass, with long hair. He has a solo channel of low bass covers, well worth checking out! His lowest note, currently, is a B0. You can hear it in Voiceplay's "Valhalla Calling." You almost feel it more than you hear it.
    J. None. Currently on reverse leave, he is away from the group singing for the Navy, but frequently does videos with VP when he can.
Eli Jacobsen (pronounced El-ee, NOT E-lie!) Tenor rock god with his gradually becoming epic beard.
Cesar De La Rosa, their newest member. He brings the feels to every performance! And he flirts with the camera, and it flirts right back!
Layne Stein, their beatboxer. Sometimes he sings, and it's always a treat to hear his voice. He's also known as The Carrot Lord and VioLayne.
Glad to see you were blown away by them! As we all were, even those of us who have been their fans for years! This is my favorite Voiceplay line-up too, with Cesar and J. None. There have been different line-ups through the years, so don't be surprised if the core members' faces change as you go back farther in time. With J. None temporarily (we hope) gone, they have different guests for each song. But fear not, because they always find the PERFECT guest for each song! I could tell you all sorts of facts and opinions about each member, but I'll let you discover them on your own! Enjoy! I know we will watching you!

Welcome to Voiceplay. They are very honest about the fact they do use some post stuff on the recordings but not as much as you might think given some of the insane sounds they come out with. Layne apparently could have done the beatboxing and play the violin at the same time but they decided it didn't look good for the video obviously in reality they were recorded as separate tracks so they could be mixed correctly and the violin wasn't the one he recorded either as they got a cheap on to throw about not his good one !
They all have insane ranges, their most recent track - The lion sleeps tonight has Cesar hitting high notes the most reactors boggled at and he will hit you in the feels if you Listen to their version of Creep and Geoff has many tracks which beat this one in depth. Normally the guest is in the middle but this time it was Eli apparently for lighting reasons so it was a good guess. Eli used to sing in a Rock band and he puts his rock tenor to great use but like them all can sing a wide range of stuff. Others have explained J None's connection to the group. If you watch more tracks you will see they have some insanely talented other friends who guest for them.
They cover a huge range of style and love costumes and creating worlds. Layne is part owner of Patti-cake Studios where most of their tracks are videoed.. or out in the Mall just outside the studio !

Hi Charlie. Nice to hear a British voice for a change, though there are one or two other Brits reacting. Hint, you won't need a filter with VoicePlay or on Geoff's soslo channel. They never block their videos. They are a home grown, independent group with no recording company to answer to. And Geoff's range is actually A0 to A#5. Really they all have a wide range, just not that wide. J.None (real name Jesse Nunn) is the black guy next to Geoff. He was a full member until 2021 when he left to sing with the navy. He returns as a guest when he's on leave from his duties. You will see him a lot in older videos. Here he sigs baritone but is singing bass with the navy. No it's not live. Cesar de la Rosa is the Puerto Rican with all the hair. Eli (say it a ellie as it's short for Eliezer) and Jacobson is how it looks with a hard J, not a Y) is the small guy with the shaven head. VoicePlay are the most imaginative and inventive acapella group out there. There are some live one around but not of great quaity as a rule, being recorded on peoples' phones. Also they are older as they no longer tour. There is one rather batter, Voiceplay - Elvira - Gordon Performance Center, Owings Mills, MD Jan 23, 2020
