I like all the high harmonies. I also think, though this song was very exciting when it came out, that Geoff's voice has only improved over the years and is currently even better than it was here. He's even improved how he composes for it. Great growth! Thanks for the analysis, PB!
You can either make the musical aesthetics folks happy, or the crowd shouting "Do it! Do it!" and waiting for the low notes. Hard to do both. I'm just happy that he is making content.
Apparently I’m going to voice an unpopular opinion, but I actually like the E1 and feel like it does fit. The whole time Geoff is building this sort of roller coaster of his registers with increasing intervals between the highs and lows as the song builds. His highest notes come right before the very lowest at the end and it feels appropriate to me musically. I would also keep in mind the context of when this came out. This was only his second solo arrangement and I think he was still trying out new things and experimenting with his sound. He’s said that if he could go back and change anything it would be to his earliest videos because he didn’t realize how popular they would become.
I personally feel that the very low note at the end expands the piece. I like it, it adds a dimension that would be lost otherwise. And yes, of course, it shows off Geoff's incredible range.
Love that you have supported Geoff from the beginning. Your knowledge, humour and humility make you one of my favourites! As for the low notes, yes I love them but wouldn't be disappointed if he chose not to do them either. I'm just happy he keeps making his special Geoff music!
What is "necessary"? Creating music is art, as you well know. Just like a painting, it's all subjective. All a cover does is tell you what kind of paint you have to use. You still get to paint it how you want. Some will like it some won't. The best part is that neither view is wrong! P.S. please do the new VP ASAP. Love the channel man keep it up!
Big question: was that low note at the end necessary? Probably not! Did I love it anyway? Yes, I did!!! Was I hoping for these low notes from him just like so many others? Yes, I was! His velvety voice, his incredible range and his impressive talent keep drawing me in all the time! I also love your voice and your reactions and analysis of VP and Geoff. Cheers to a happy, healthy and successful 2023 for you, Peter!!! Keep up keeping up!💕🥰
That ending E1 might not be necessary, but I feel like it ends a warm, sombre piece with a very warm, chocolatey note. I really like this E1, and (I could be wrong) I think it’s probably his clearest and richest E1 to date :D
Hi Peter. I love Geoff. Geoff rules. ((wink)) That out of the way, I really love this cover - the arrangement, the vocals. I love that he put the low notes in there as a stretch and as so many people only come for the bass notes, but I also adore that he goes up into his higher register so beautifully.
It's become a signature of his solo work so I find no problems with the 'end of the song' low notes myself. I don't know that it was 100% needed, but I also don't think it took anything away from the song.
As I remember, this was pretty early in Geoff releasing solo stuff. Did he need the last note, probably not. Was it absolutely smart to put it there? ABSOLUTELY
Kind of agree on the last E1, this one came out when Geoff seemed to feel like the low ending was expected and therefore did them when they weren't needed. Love this song and your analysis is spot on
The E1 was fan service. A lot of his reactors "live" for his Brown notes. (That was a South Park reference). Peter, you're diagnostic skills are outstanding.
Geoff rules ... for the algorithm. I always learn something new in your analyses. It's fun to watch the evolution of Geoff's style in his solo stuff, as an arranger and producer/director/editor as well as continuing to develop his voice. Was that last E1 necessary? No. Was it awesome? Yes. Blackbird was released less than a year after Oogie Boogie's Song, which is when he first hit a usable E1. In Blackbird he's practicing a note that's still relatively new, given that he's been singing professionally since he was 17.
Yes Peter I did like that voice crack. Although I agree somewhat that the low note is unnecessary, it's still his best E1 in my opinion Still love your analyses
I always appreciate your analyses (and respectful, honest critiques). This song has some of my favourite harmonies from Geoff, but I have to say I agree about the E1. However, it's not hard to see why he put it in, judging by many of the comments here alone - people love those jaw-dropping notes! I almost always do as well, just not as much here. I think that in both his solo and VP work he's generally trying to balance his musicianship against being an entertainer, and people are going to have mixed (and sometimes very strong) opinions one way or the other about that. He's a fascinating artist and I'm on board for whatever he does next!
Yea that’s exactly how I feel. Although It didn’t totally fit with this piece, Geoff made sure to do a really impressive note because he knows his true fans love it and it is a great way to draw people in who are watching one of his covers for the first time. It also holds true to the title of Low Bass Cover which is nice!
For me, I totally understand thinking the E1 is a little unnecessary for the ending. However I think the reason it’s there is because this was Geoff’s 2nd ever cover he did on his channel, so it makes sense to me that he’d be showing off his range and subharmonics in this way. Kind of like an introduction to who he is as an artist and showing what he’s capable of. A lot of people knew him from voice play as the low note guy so most of his audience is there for the low notes, especially when he first started doing covers. But I do agree that it is a little unnecessary for this particular piece. And it’s not just this one but there’s been a few instances in other covers where he’s done the same. But I think it tends to be more of a business choice a lot of the time which is smart considering his audience
Geoff has said that if he wants to do acapella work he does it with VoicePlay. In his own covers he's showing more of his talent for arranging I guess. I don't know that it was necessary but I actually liked tha final low note. He uses that E1 a few times in VoicePlay's latest, Nothing Else Matters which is stunning reactors all over the place. :)
Always enjoy your analyses. Not going to lie, saw you pop up and I thought it was gonna be an epic Voiceplay reaction to Nothing Else Matters. I always enjoy a good Geoff breakdown, though.
I can honestly say that I had never heard this song until Geoff did it & I LOVE IT! low notes & all. The last low note may not have been necessary, but I truly believe it set the end of the song beautifully. But then I'm a sucker for a. great bass, the lower the better. JD SUMNER was one of my all-time favorites & Geoff is right up there as well. Great analysis, Peter! Thanks, til next time Also great job on the Bass Gangs latest! It's Awesome!
This is on of my favorites from Geoff, so I'm so glad to se you analyse it. I love Geoff's cover of this song so much more than the original because of the flow that Geoff has put in this. I actually don't mind the low note at the end, it might not have been necessary, but it creates contrast to the high notes that came before it, and it seems to be what a lot of people want or wanted at the time Geoff released this cover. Also with all your singing along to this cover from Geoff, I can't help myself but hoping that we one day might get a Peter Barber and Geoff Castellucci duet ❤
Hi Peter, I love pretty much everything Geoff does. I can't wait for your analysis or analysis/reaction to the latest VoicePlay cover. Another Geoff arrangement and it might possibly be my favorite!
As usual, a very informative and entertaining analysis. Thank you🙏 I get the feeling that in his early soloworks he is experimenting a bit as he goes along. I'm not so sure they would turn out quite the same, done today. We're on the same. I stumbled onto Geoff and MM as my very first acapella experience and your reaction channel shortly after. The rest is history.Nowadays I'm a bass loving person and I blame Geoff and you Peter for that development! (And the rest of the Bass Gang a bit, as well)
I love that you’re going back to Geoff’s “old” videos. Now for the debate. I agree that it may be little unnecessary, but I believe he did it because it was one of his first solo videos. I have always thought of it that way since he’s such a brilliant arranger; he knew it didn’t belong. He just probably wanted to end with a Wow factor.
This piece felt more like a resume than anything to me. He wanted to show he has tenor, he has baritone, and he has bass with extra bass. He gave each a spotlight, and to that end, how could you not throw in a clean subharmonic? If there was ever a moment where he needed to apply for a position in a group as a singer, he could slap this song in an email titled "Thanks for the part".
Рік тому+3
Hey Peter, I can totally see where you are coming from with Geoff's E1 at the end. And I agree it is not necessary in this song, but where he placed it, it is a good compromise between showing of and sounding good in the context of the song in my opinion. I have a similar problem with one of his bass-drops in his lead part of their Nothing Else Matters cover. But I guess debating if one single note in a song was the correct choice when the rest is so beautifully done is complaining on a very high level.
OK ---- Honestly ... can take it or leave it!!! Now -- after hearing this so so many times, it's so good. Didn't know the song prior, if that means anything. Geoff has come a long long way on his sound; has worked his butt off --- and let's pinpoint that somewhere near SingOff time ........... he's progressed big time; not only with VoicePlay -- but his Solo stuff. The progression showed placement where it didn't necessarily belong, somewhat out of place or not fitting ---- but because he could. Call it pride or ego ---- but in the last so many yrs, placement has been much better where it does/can "fit"; it just sounds good showing the hard work. (If what I've said makes any sense other than a circle that goes nowhere!) Be Safe
You know, I thought the same thing about that ending E1 --- well, at least at first. I thought it smacked a little of "look what I can do." But then I thought - shit, if *I* had a voice like Geoff's, and if I could hit that E1 as believably as he did - and if I was aware of just how much it stirred hormones, I'd give my audience what it came for - that happy ending aimed at making listeners stir in their seats.
Peter, the look on your face must be what most of us look like when listening to Geoff. If someone would ask,"What does butter melting on corn sound like?", You would have to direct them here, and let them watch your face😊
I adore the low note at the end of this song, I always notice it with a little smile, very much like the way I listen to the long notes in your Creep cover. The only thing that I don't care for in this song is the very high high notes. That's what feels unnecessary to me (and it also kind of hurts my ears, sensory problems). Was really great to hear your insights on this one!
Great analysis!!🙂i always enjoy hearing Geoff and watching your reactions & analysis to awesome vocal artists.this is one of my favorite songs and Geoff does a fantastic cover!!🙂thanks✌
Great analysis sir! I agree the E1 didn't really add anything to the song, but on the other hand, it's kind of his trademark at times. Great song that shows his range and extreme talent. You should do his latest "Til Then", Great song from the Mills Brothers in WWII P.s. Geoff is the benchmark for contemporary bass singers in my book.
Beautiful version of Blackbird. Hearing this song brought to mind another "bird" song by another favorite singer of mine. Have you ever heard Eva Cassidy? She's no longer with us, but her voice was angelic. If you haven't, I'd love to see a blind reaction from you listening to her. Her covers of Songbird, People Get Ready and Over The Rainbow are some that stand out to me.
I love Geoff's voice and work, and I LOVE your analyses, so when you discuss Geoff's singing I'm always thrilled. I agree with you that the ending low note isn't necessary. It's amazing and his voice gives me chills, but the note almost sounds kind of sinister because it's so dark. For me it doesn't work with the light, flowy, smooth feel of the rest of this arrangement. ALSO! Thank you for the coffee mug last month - it was a nice little Xmas gift and now you're featured on my desk every day at work. :)
I have not heard this song in a while but Geoff did such a great job on this piece, your reactions and analysis Peter is really helping others really learn more about music and I think your doing a great job covering these songs, Thanks for making amazing videos Peter 👏
Was really hoping you'd do an analysis of this! Thanks! I think for Geoff's normal MO the big drop at the end is expected. Necessary? Maybe not that low, but being honest I love it. His legato style makes the song really relaxing, especially coupled with the styling of his piano work. It's a fine line, since much more legato would make it difficult to differentiate/understand some words. Overall I really love his rendition.
I consider that there are analyzers and there are reactors. I would say that you are an analyzer. You and Elizabeth from Charismatic Voice are my favorites. My favorite "reactor" is Kazandra Brock. She makes me laugh!
I love your more detailed technical analysis of what he does with his instrument. I was actually going to ask you specifically about his nasality, and your explanation really helps me get over it. I notice he does it less in his upper ranges, although there are certain consonants that seem to flip him into the nasality more, I notice it a lot after n's, maybe because the tongue placement is already getting that soft palate to close a little. I think his chord arrangement with this is so beautiful, but I have loved all his arrangements. Yeah, that yummy chord you talk about was a dominant..luscious. I think he's doing less formal sounding techniques like the drop into the fry and the quick slide up to the note, as a nod to the Beatles, because they were mostly self-taught musical geniuses, and this came out in '68 (I was about 9 and it was my FAVORITE song ever!) and I think he was trying to be true to its original folk-rock feel. As to his final lowest note, I agree, it was a little unnecessary. He did so many other exquisite things, that it was almost extraneous.
Love your content!! I've learned so much from your videos. And yes Geoff rules!! But you and the other members of The Bass Gang are all so amazing! You really can't even compare all you bass singers because you all are amazing!
I'd say the ending E1 would sound amazing with a simple E major chord above there (E4-G#4-B4) But like let the E1 be solo for a second and then slightly hit with the chord then grow intensity and quickly release every voice. I believe that would be sound great
Indeed Geoff rules, but you are also a very good bass Peter! I like your expression vibe when you're singing with the other bass singers! You have the Vincent Price vibe!
One of my favorite Geoff pieces. Shows a vulnerable side in a way. Low note at the end was fine with me. Oh...And you need to check out the new voiceplay Metallica cover. It's their best work yet.
I absolutely love that Geoff covered this song. I agree about the low notes being unnecessary. It's such a beautiful arrangement and some of low notes pull me out of the song. This cover is beautiful though! One of my favorites from Geoff. Thank you for analyzing this one, Peter!
Phenomenal. What a great cover. But I disagree, he was totally within his rights as one of the only humans who CAN hit that low note to do so. He should show off when he can! Your analysis/reaction was super. I really respect your own talent. You teach me each time when you open your mouth. Wish I could afford to be a patron, maybe if this year gets a little easier financially I will break that barrier!
This is one of my favorite Geoff covers, but I agree on that E1. There are only a few of Geoff's low notes, which don't sound quite right in the context of the song for me. This one is one. There is one in If I Were a Rich Man, which I think you pointed out as well. There is also one in their new cover of Nothing Else Matters, which I bet you will agree with. Many don't seem to mind these choices, and others seem to have a problem with a lot more low notes he uses, so I dont think there are any choices which everyone will appreciate. But I'll take the 99.7% of his musical choices that I absolutely love with the .3% I don't completely agree with over any other artist out there.
Geoff has said that he doesn't do his solo stuff acapella because if he was going to do that, he'd just do it with Voiceplay. While I love this song (the original and his arrangement), it's one of my least favorites of his mainly because of the diction. I know that's an artistic choice when listening to his other stuff, it's just not for me. I agree with @iamkerok though. It's hard to please everyone and I'm just happy he's making content.
For me, this was one of if not the first song I heard Geoff's insane instrument - so I'm a bit biased when it comes to the first time that I heard a human produce an E1.
This was a great analysis and you have a great voice and range yourself. I personally like the sub harmonic note at the end for its jaw dropping effect. Although I agree it takes away from the brilliance of the overall arrangement and performance.
Absolutely love this one by Geoff -- what's your favorite moment from this beautiful cover?
OneRepublic - Apologize +Kids (Ryan breaks a key) (iHeartRadio) react please.💛💛
I can agree with you on the last sub note but Geoff just gives us what we wait for.
I like all the high harmonies. I also think, though this song was very exciting when it came out, that Geoff's voice has only improved over the years and is currently even better than it was here. He's even improved how he composes for it. Great growth! Thanks for the analysis, PB!
Bros gonna start a war with that
The opening bars. Love how the voices weave around the single note on the keyboard.
I'm right there with you for what it's worth
Agreed!
100% with you
I personally feel that the very low note at the end expands the piece. I like it, it adds a dimension that would be lost otherwise. And yes, of course, it shows off Geoff's incredible range.
Thank you for sharing your opinion on this!
Love watching your analysis and hearing Geoff. Your voice is quite amazing as well.
Keep up keeping up!💕🥰
Cool analysis. Love the LOW notes and seeing people go 'what was that?' Never fails. Love it!🥳🥰🤩🖖👍👊
* patiently waits for you to do VoicePlay's Nothing Else Matters *
That ending E1 might not be necessary, but I feel like it ends a warm, sombre piece with a very warm, chocolatey note. I really like this E1, and (I could be wrong) I think it’s probably his clearest and richest E1 to date :D
Hi Peter. I love Geoff. Geoff rules. ((wink)) That out of the way, I really love this cover - the arrangement, the vocals. I love that he put the low notes in there as a stretch and as so many people only come for the bass notes, but I also adore that he goes up into his higher register so beautifully.
It amazes me how clear and controlled he is in his tenor range. I'm surprised it took you so long to react to this one. Its done so beautifully!
I feel it absolutely fits and brings the song to a natural close.
This one changed my life when I was growing up.
It's become a signature of his solo work so I find no problems with the 'end of the song' low notes myself. I don't know that it was 100% needed, but I also don't think it took anything away from the song.
Geoff rumbling the speakers is always good.
The reason I came to your channel was to watch Voice Play reactions. So Geoff brought me to you.
Love this song and your analysis is spot on
So ready for this!!💙🖤💙🖤
The E1 was fan service. A lot of his reactors "live" for his Brown notes. (That was a South Park reference). Peter, you're diagnostic skills are outstanding.
Another excellent analysis, Peter!😊
Geoff is phenomenal... !
Great analysis, E1 was a perfect ending.
We love Geoff! In fact, when I tell Mickey-the-Cat "we love Geoff" he jumps up on my chair and starts purring.
Geoff rules ... for the algorithm. I always learn something new in your analyses.

Love these videos, I sing bass myself and love hearing what you have to say it really inspires me to take those notes to heart
Yes Peter I did like that voice crack.
Although I agree somewhat that the low note is unnecessary, it's still his best E1 in my opinion
Still love your analyses
Another thing I love is that you can also sing along just like "the fairy voice mother" which not many other commenter's can do
Hi Peter
I like Geoff
Geoff rules!

enjoy listening to intelligent conversation about a subjet i love
I agree that the last low note seemed intentional.
BUT, Geoff knows what his fans want to hear. It wasn't necessary, but we loved it!
Yea that’s exactly how I feel. Fit just fine because he’s describing the night!
What a brilliant arranger Geoff is!
Always enjoy your analyses. Not going to lie, saw you pop up and I thought it was gonna be an epic Voiceplay reaction to Nothing Else Matters. I always enjoy a good Geoff breakdown, though.

Honestly I love your videos. Always very entertaining and informative !
Your voice is so smooth, but I know you have great power and ability. Keep up the great work!
Geoff is that guy
I agree with you on this one, though agree - his fans are there for the basement notes. I simply appreciate his musicianship
Agree with Geoff’s diversifying, with instruments. Thanks Peter.
Love ur reactions and even more I LOVE BASS GANG!!!!
Love your content!! I've learned so much from your videos. And yes Geoff rules!! But you and the other members of The Bass Gang are all so amazing! You really can't even compare all you bass singers because you all are amazing!
Amazing arrangement by Geoff.
mark 10 to 11 in this reaction - you asked for favourite part :)
Hi Peter, I love Geoff, Geoff rules 😂
Love hearing you sing
I'd say the ending E1 would sound amazing with a simple E major chord above there (E4-G#4-B4)
But like let the E1 be solo for a second and then slightly hit with the chord then grow intensity and quickly release every voice.
Love all things in any way tangentially associated with VoicePlay. Geoff as always is incredible.
Hi Peter, I love Geoff, Geoff rules!
Anything of that sort!
😉
I absolutely love that Geoff covered this song. I agree about the low notes being unnecessary. It's such a beautiful arrangement and some of low notes pull me out of the song. This cover is beautiful though! One of my favorites from Geoff. Thank you for analyzing this one, Peter!
Love is wonderful .❤️

Hi Peter XD Hope You have a nice day
My favorite of his works 🕵
This is one of my favorite Geoff covers, but I agree on that E1. There are only a few of Geoff's low notes, which don't sound quite right in the context of the song for me. This one is one. There is one in If I Were a Rich Man, which I think you pointed out as well. There is also one in their new cover of Nothing Else Matters, which I bet you will agree with. Many don't seem to mind these choices, and others seem to have a problem with a lot more low notes he uses, so I dont think there are any choices which everyone will appreciate. But I'll take the 99.7% of his musical choices that I absolutely love with the .3% I don't completely agree with over any other artist out there.
another great analysis! Thanks for sharing Peter! ❤
Just clicked and excited to watch. Also looking forward to hopefully an analysis and reaction soon of Season of Love by Pentatonix
E1 sub you're getting better at subs wow
Geoff is one of my most favorite singers!
I love & thank you for your reactions to Geoff. Peter, will you please do a reaction video of Geoff's new solo cover Till Then ? It is beautiful.
I can see peter reacting to voiceplays new cover of "nothing else matters"
69k subs, nice
Bruh 😂
This was a great analysis and you have a great voice and range yourself. I personally like the sub harmonic note at the end for its jaw dropping effect. Although I agree it takes away from the brilliance of the overall arrangement and performance.
