    I’m a huge fan of pickled okra! Never tried a packaged mix for them, but I don’t see why that couldn’t work.
    I learned to pack my okra in the jars with half pointed up and half pointed down to fit more in each jar. Just something Maw-Maw taught me.
    Keep at it! I’m hitting up some of Antique Alley tomorrow. 🤗

      I was thinking the same about putting some upside down. I’ve never canned/pickled anything, so I’m learning. I don’t know if I’ll be comfortable doing the canning/pickling.

    Everything I pickle floats like that. I’ve started to put okra in stem down until the bottom is full and then fill the spaces with the stem up. It helps get a few more in there.

    We've pickled okra for years. Grew Clemson spineless for that. Heirloom variety. Like the star of David for canning to fry. Makes fatter pods but shorter.

    Old Alabama Gardner had a recipe for canning okra for frying. It works but has a slight vinegar taste that we actually like. Done the freezer method for years. We use fish breading from Sam's club to batter it in. Might look it up. I wrote the recipe down for canning. Gets mushy after about a year but no freezer space.

    Not so crazy for fried okra or in the gumbo...but pickled is WOW!
    The comment on not being afraid to improvise really helps. When you first start canning--like me, one year old--it really gives a boost of confidence. Looking forward to the other version when you get it done and uploaded. Jesus bless.
    Hey...and I love it and can't wait for the next installment you guys are putting together on regenerating soil. Super excited.

    Just saw this. Wasn't home yesterday. Went to Antique Alley. Had a blast but so hot we didn't hit all we wanted. May go back this morning and see how far I can get before my foot and the heat get to me. Couple of things I'm looking for. Wish me favor finding them. Did see some gorgeous pink glass that I may go back and get if it's still there, if I don't find what I am looking for.

    Would any old giant pot work for the canner if we don't have the black coated pot? Sorry if it is a stupid question, but wasn't sure if they were made a certain special thickness. From what I understand the water just needs to be at a hard boil and the jars need to be completely covered. Correct? New to all this gardening and preserving stuff, but my garden is a full time job this year from so many veggies coming in. I do have a large pressure canner, can the pressure canning method be used for this instead of the water bath method?

    • @ntxg
      @ntxg  Рік тому +1

      Hi Angela! Never silly questions here! Yes you can use any pot for canning, completely cover with water. You can even use your canner, just do not put lid on

    Since you used the whole pickling packet, it looks like you had 9 wide mouth pint full of okra. Is that correct? On average, how many okra pods did you put in each jar? I ask because maybe someone does not have as much okra and doesn’t need to use the whole packet. Thanks! Just subscribed to your channel!

      Hi munchkin and thank you so much for the sub. I did more yesterday and I got 5 quarts in 3 pints. The first time I did them I didn’t add enough okra to the jars and this second time I did by taking the advice I have some of my subs who said put one point down one point up so I was able to get more in I hope this helps. Just pack them in as tight as you can.

    Why would anyone pressure can pickled okra when hot water bathing works? The water bathing makes it shelf stable too, right?
