I think the album is a masterpiece but I don't believe the last song, the epilogue-y one "Not To Be Forgotten" really belongs. The album ends perfectly with the last note of "Tell Her You Saw Me," IMHO. I listened to this album 100+ times this summer on a boombox doing yardwork and I always stop the tape there. Perfection.
Pat is a goat. You can tell he's doin exactly what he wants to do with his life. He inspired me as a musician, but also just as a person. He encouraged me to pursue my passions in music and beyond. Pat is the truth!

Thank you for posting this. Unlike the one oddball who doesn't recognize Metheny's genius, we truly appreciate it. I've never understood why he doesn't get (or give?) more appearances on "mainstream" radio and tv.
Wow, I would have never thought I'd see a young, up and coming Quentin Tarantino sit next Jazz great, Pat Metheny. And to think that Tarantino's directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs, was going to premier the next month of this episode shoot and establish him as an important Hollywood director for 90's cinema and onward. And as always, Pat has the flame to keep going and never get stale 20 years into his career(and present as well). This is solid TV programming that was still in touch with highly esteemed American artists from different disciplines and packaging all the greatness in one evening. I'd be hard pressed to see Kurt Rosenwinkle or Julian Lage even get a television spot today with Colbert/Batiste(imagine how neat that would be) with directors like Jordan Peele or Wes Anderson as special guests. I digress, but thanks for posting this gem!
Guest appearences on broadcast TV by musicians I loved were very dear to me even though they were not commonly appeciated by the vast majority of my friends. I did what I could to capture them and I'm glad I did. It warms my heart to learn that decades later so many of you out there continue to find enjoyment and appreciation for his unique talent and musical ingenuity. (28,000 views in just 3 years!)
Pat's playing the Gibson guitar he got at a garage sale when he was about 16 that being held together by duct tape in a few places. He still uses it to this day if I'm not mistaken.
It was retired as his guitar tech made th ecomment [to the effect] that it was falling apart]. He's now working with Ibanez to contiue his signature model with a new version that steps away from the humbucker pickups and into the Charlie Christian Wide ranged Single coil BAR magnet type in the neck. It hasn't been released yet but should be interesting when it does!

I think the first appearances of the Ibanez PM proto types were used on the Question & Answer record (you can also see a picture of it in the artwork). Secret Story has a mix of Ibanez and his Gibson. I think that shortly after that, he kind of retired the Gibson from touring and only uses it for studio purposes/at home (and perhaps that by now 30 years later it's just not used at all anymore). He used that black PM120 with the PMG for We live here/Quartet/Imaginary Day which had the two horns and also two pickups (but Pat still using only the neck). After that he got into that blonde PM model with the ebony tailpiece as you can hear on Speaking of now and the Way Up (along basically all his other records). The Charlie Christian pickup thing is something he got interested in. He had Daniel Slaman build him a custom guitar based around the CC thing when he was in Utrecht in 2014 with the Unity Band. From what I gather from the Slaman website, he's basically one of the real experts on this and excellent luthier (he even demos Pat's guitar). I have seen him play that Slaman with Ron Carter and with the quartet that's featured on From this place. It sounds brighter to me with a more woody tone as opposed to the sweet rolled off tone the ES-style ones give. So if you see a picture of him with such a guitar, it could actually be the Slaman and not the Ibanez. I think that around the pandemic, Ibanez then made a version of the PM based on this pickup, which is basically a clone of his Slaman. Because I suspect that Metheny still needed a few additional things including that microphone he has inside (you see that he has a larger cable going out and there is something in the second F-hole mounted) and probably didn't want to modify his Slaman (which would maybe also include actually drilling into the body etc.). I saw that one the last 2 years with the Side-eye project. It is unclear to me if Ibanez is going to release such a model. I kind of doubt it and assume this is a "one-off" for Metheny. He has a few one-off's from Ibanez, also including that soprano guitar you can hear on Letter from Home (the track). The Slaman is featured on his new Dreambox record I think along with a few other odd guitars from his collection. I think the Discog site lists which guitar is on which track.
