I was a camera operator (the one over Lyle's right shoulder) on that pilot. It was an ACL crew for the most part, but this was not an Austin City Limits. It was a pilot called "Every Tub On Its Own Bottom". We also had Freddie Hubbard, different shoot/night. I will never ever forget that night.I "lost it" and "became one" with the performance and my instrument, an old RCA studio camera. Beautiful. But, PBS did not buy the pilot. Pity.
Pity indeed. What a phenomenal show that would have been. Surprised to hear they didn’t pick it up particularly after that performance! So great you were there to experience it.
Much love from L.A. Cali. I know you were in awe. That is wild. I was introduced to Lyle mays and Pat with Secret Story (my first concert as a kid). Worked my way back to all of their early music. So great you were able to be there for this! Thanks for sharing
Egan and Gottlieb: priceless! Saw this lineup in a criminally-small club in Portland, OR during this tour--forearms on the stage by Lyle. Literally wept. PMG opened for Tom Scott. Breathtaking evening of players communicating at the highest level. Unbelievable. Unforgettable. Thanks for this post!
This is my favorite era of the Pat Metheny Group ,... caught them live doing these tunes and others from "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" and without doubt it was one of the best concerts I've ever witnessed ! They were so good that they created a magical like atmosphere that had the audience amazed and naturally high... I'm not kidding, it was straight crazy ! R.I.P. Lyle Mays !!!
I remember watching this on PBS - I was 17 and it completely dropped my jaw and helped to permanently shape and advise my own music. Forever grateful for Pat, Lyle, Mark, and Dan! PMG = amazing!
I got to see the Pat Metheny Group when this album first came out in a small college coffee shop venue where me an my girlfriend were in the first row about 8 feet from Pat Metheny with the rest of the group stuffed onto a small stage right in front of us as well. I will never forget the power of that performance.
I'm so honored, thankful, appreciative and grateful to have come across this. You can't find the Pat Metheny White Album in it's entirety on You Tube any more. Supreme musicianship! 🎶💖🎶💖🎶💖🎶
Beautiful performance. "San Lorenzo" sounds as beautiful as ever, and despite never hearing "Wrong is Right" before, it sounds so familiar; almost like it's a variation of "Lone Jack". The showstopper has to be "Jaco"; the accompaniment really gives that accomplished Mark Egan solo lots of bounce. A masterclass in playing from the whole team.
It’s so awesome. It looks like they invited 2500 of their best friends to watch them practice. Love how they are facing each other and not the audience. Lol. So young and ready to change the very face of fusion jazz forever. What a time!!!!! Btw nice sweater Mark.
...and the empty space left by the sudden departure of Lyle Mays grows, and grows - sometimes, when I listen to "Sept Fifteenth", and that expansive Bill Evans-ish Piano Solo unfurls, I find myself uncontrollably weeping!
I saw the PMG in Berkeley, California around this time...actually - the Offramp tour, and all I can say - it was the Golden Age of Live Music at that time. Also saw Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, and Weather Report, with Jaco all around the same timeframe!
@@robtullius7540 I just saw him on his Dreambox tour. He has *not* lost his energy. It was an amazing show and I really liked the conversational version of Pat. Also he does do group work (Side-Eye or Unity Group, for instance) but PMG was Pat *and *Lyle. Without Lyle there can not ba a PMG. I do love this version of the group from those early, slightly more raw, days. I first saw him live in 1980 while they were working up the As Falls Wichita material and they performed this unnamed 'work in progress for 20 minutes. It was amazing.

Wow, so cool to see. I was there somewhere that night, in Austin, but not there, dangit. I was only 13 and had yet to discover this amazing talent. His volume control is powerful. I get chills... Thanks for posting. 👍🏻✌🏼😎
Ok so my favorite part of this video (thank you @concertsintehwoods4845) is at the end of Lyle's solo on phase Dance and the camera pans to a couple in the audience. I dare say that they are not even breathing then @5.10 the solo ends and a collective sigh and breath (the girl) Is like and what just happened as she pulls back to get her arms free and be part of the applause... Sums it all up. Oh to have been there in '77 they had played NTSU several times during this period in Denton TX where i was lucky enough to see them.
Because I was a teenager in those days, I feel comfortable calling out the obvious prodigious use of the standard one-two, personal hygiene ritual of the day. I'm talking, of course, about the use of Prell Shampoo and Tame Conditioner. There was simply no other way to get that amount of lift and volume from a full head of hair.
First time I heard this there’s no way I would’ve guessed that only 4 musicians were in the band. Thought it was more. It was 1988 in San Diego. Wow Lyle Mays can Simultaneously play three different instruments. And they say you can’t do more than two things at one time BS
My version of this video, which has slightly better video quality, is being taken down soon because of a copyright strike threat. Will this one disappear too?
A friend of mine who used to work for Austin City Limits, and worked as a cameraman on this production, says it was produced by the ACL crew as a pilot for PBS. He says it was done in the studio across from the one they used for ACL.
I downloaded this before it gets taken down. What's the third song (between "San Lorenzo" and "Jaco")? Don't think I have it on any of my early albums. Beautiful music
The song is "Wrong is Right", also played live at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco - 1977, the EP Phase Dancer How do you download this? 🙀 I also want to!

Agreed 100%
Omg rip Lyle. So truly missed my dude.
Agreed! He was one of a kind: a musical style unto himself. Such a complete musician, and by all accounts a wonderful person as well!
Captures Pat and the group at a great moment. Love to see Mark Egan and Dan Gottleib here. These are some of my favorite Metheny tunes.

Lyle Mays' fingers on those keys reminds me of ocean waves fluttering on and off the shore. Damn....they're each awesome.🖤🖤

3:42 THAT SUSPENSION so good
This video brings back such peace! Then a peaceful sadness, knowing that Lyle is gone. Wow, this is incredible!
Love this episode of Austin city limits. Ah the 70s. The audience seems awestruck. Great music
Listening with their ears, and no phones.....
The expression of the lady at 1:32 says it all, why is he good?
Oni ( zwłaszcza Pat ) stworzyli muzykę ponadczasową , jazz który nie męczy , a wprost przeciwnie -pełny relax .
Best of the best. Giving us compositions that come from a very attuned man and his guests musicians
One of the Best line up..
It's so sad that Pat won't do a group anymore. He totally lost his energy. Very sad...🤑🤑🤑🤑

I am wondering who was the more influential UNT alumni Lyle Mays or Don Henley? Maybe its a tie

Nashville tuning on that electric 12 string?...or something of that nature?...any ideas?...some kind of D sharp major tuning!!...
weird to see him with his back to the audience
Well the audience is around the PMG in a circle formation.
Didn't there used to be a better copy on UA-cam?
At least it sounds good.
Without Lyle..OMG...is...nothing...
C'mon Copyrighters, block this masterpiece too 🙄
Do you have an unedited version of Hank Williams Jr. on Austin City Limits in 1980?
This is forging old... so I guess no one will see my comment, who cares! Pat! Cmon this early stuff makes you .....
