  • This video is a tour of my kosher kitchen! As an Orthodox Jew, keeping kosher is an important part of my religious observance and my daily life. In this video we will explore my entire kitchen, peek in all the cabinets, and see how I have things set up and why. I will talk a lot about keeping kosher and how we work out keeping two sets of dishes and organizing our kosher foods in our refrigerator and more.
Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and we have three wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This video is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) You can see how this particular Jewish homeschool mom sets up her days, rolls with the punches, and gets it all done. Thanks for watching!

This was very interesting. I never knew this about being an orthodox Jewish person. Your kitchen is very organized and I love how you have it set up. UA-cam randomly put your video as a suggestion. I’m glad they did.

I felt like we had something in common with our Tupperware cabinet. Whenever I have people visit, they often comment and “say oh my goodness how do you keep your kitchen so clean and organized”. Then there is the Tupperware cabinet, when immediately upon opening it something will fall out on top of you. It was nice to see that I am not the only one with the same struggle. 😊

Same here! Everything in our kitchen has its specific place, but in the tupperware cabinet chaos reigns supreme. Every once in a while I try to organize it, but as soon as you take something out, the new 'system' collapses 🤦🏼‍♀️😅

Tupperware cabinets just seem to be exercises in entropy! I've heard that every sock that goes missing in the drier comes back as a tupper lid.

Tacos ARE everything! 🌮 I grew up in San Diego, so I had the best tacos available. It's so hard to pick a favorite... but it's probably ground beef with Pico de Gallo, wrapped in a warm corn tortilla. I have a new kitchen, too (with a white backslash that is always dirty 🤪) but my favorite thing is LOTS of counter space!

This was a great tour. I've been so curious about how Kosher kitchens were set up, and your tour answered a lot of questions I had. Also, I love that your kitche is "lived in." It's clean, but you've got your junk drawers, cupboards you could clear out, trash in the can, etc. just like the rest of us...i.e. it's real, not pinterest perfect. Thanks for sharing authentically.

A year ago I found out my moms mother was born into a Jewish family. Though she converted to Catholicism when she married my mom’s father. I would have loved learning more of the Jewish traditions and beliefs growing up. I did date a Jewish guy in college, his grandmother and mom taught me lots of Yiddish words! And his grandma’s kitchen was a traditional Kosher kitchen. It was huge! I love learning about the Jewish religion, as I feel growing up my mom and her mom missed a great opportunity to teach us about our Jewish roots.

Tip to newlyweds. When I married my husband, I also converted to liberal Judaism around the same time. My husband grew up in a kosher home and I wanted to honor his tradition, but I also had no personal interest in keeping a kosher kitchen. We settled on kosher-style, but I also went vegetarian (many years later we went a step farther and became vegan). By eliminating meat from our home, it made everything a ton easier. Eliminating dairy is easier now than it was decades ago because you can buy just about everything non-dairy and kosher these days (plant-based milks, cheeses, sour cream, etc.). It takes a little bit of time to learn to cook vegan, but the food is just as delicious and far more healthy. As Chana said, being vegan and keeping kosher are not the same thing, but it does make it far more easy to cook kosher. Plus, since most Jews live in big cities, and vegan food is relatively easy to find in big cities, there are a ton of vegan, kosher recipes on-line. You don't even need kosher cookbooks anymore!

    • @NancyCronk
      @NancyCronk 2 роки тому +1

P.S. Chana, your explanation about glass being kosher in Sephardic kitchens explains a wedding gift we received 37 years ago! My husband's family is Ashkenazi and one of my relatives gave us a set of glass dishes we didn't register for. I always wondered why -- now I know! I like the Sephardic tradition much more -- so much easier. I wish the Ashkenazi would adopt that!

He rubs a tuna steak with a little oil then seasons with salt and pepper and Sears it on the outside so still rare on the inside. I lived with my aunt & uncle in high school. They'd purchased a home in the early 90's in North Dallas (Preston & forest are) as that area has a large Jewish community the home they purchased had once been owned by a Jewish family, so the kitchen being quite large & had once been designed to me a kosher/orthodox kitchen. There were 2 sinks one on either side of the kitchen as to separate dairy & meat prep areas. As my family isn't Jewish & they never got around to redoing the kitchen it just stayed that way. It was a lovely home. Sadly they sold the home & as the neighborhood has since been under revitalization the home has been demolished & a completely different house has gone up. I appreciate culture & love to learn about others culture.

How to get rid of fruit flies! They drive crazy! Take a bowl, fill it half full hot water, add a couple tablespoons of sugar, apple cider vinegar. Regular vinegar won’t do. And a drop of Dawn. Mix together until sugar dissolves. I set on by my trash can, countertop anywhere they ten to congratulate. Works wonderfully. Change every week. You’ll be amazed at how this mixture attracts fruit flies!

To rid yourself of fruit flies or other small flies, just put some vinegar in a glass with a drop of soap to break the surface tension. In a couple of days most flies will be drowned in the glass. I prefer to use apple cider or wine vinegar, but even distilled vinegar works.

Great video, great job. I buy kosher cheese or the cheese package has to specify that it made with vegetable rennet for aged cheeses. Love black bean tacos. I shut off my frig and freezer light switches with a piece of sliver duct tape, it’s reusable for several months then loses it stickiness. It nice that scrubby sponges come in different colors, pink, green-yellow and blue are easy to find. I’m thinking of including some meat back in diet, so I love the idea of different patterns and colors for table and cooking ware. Some chefs used use colored coded cutting boards and they not necessarily kosher chefs. I keep a pre-ground pepper for Shabbat, whole peppercorns in grinder for the rest of week. 💞

I too save my plastic bags for the smaller trash cans, as well as for the kitty poops. However, I have repurposed the box that I got my gallon size vinegar bottles from Sam's Club to hold all of the plastic bags. It lives in my cabinet under the sink in my half bath / laundry room (saving space in my kitchen!) My cloth shopping bags live in the back of my car so I don't forget them!

My best friend in High school was Jewish. I knew nothing about keeping Kosher until I spent a weekend at their house. (Once the sun set on Friday no one left the house until Sundown on Sunday.) I volunteered to help clean up after Shabbat meal and accidentally put the silverware in the wrong spot.
No one was mad, but her mom called mine and explained to her what happened. My mom explained that I was to help and watch and learn.
We spent the following day cleaning the kitchen and dining room under the watchful eyes of the Rabbi. He then took time to answer my questions and explain the why's and wherefore of it all.

My favorite tacos are tacos rojos. They’re not that well known in the US. Great vegetarian recipe.
Tortillas are drenched in a sauce made of Chile ancho, then fried to make them easy to roll. They’re filled with queso fresco and onion ( i set aside some with just cheese because of my kids) then topped with lettuce, fried potatoes and carrots, sour cream , and salsa. They’re are times when I have to change up ingredients due to kids

If I had to have a Kosher kitchen it would be really difficult. I don't have a lot of cabinets, and my fridge is really small. I do have a special area for my shredded cheese, and butter, it just makes it easier to grab when I need it. I like shredded cheese for quesadillas or nacho cheesy chips. I use paper plates so there's less dishes (I do not have a dish washer).

I also can and have a pressure canner for meat, parve and dairy. I thought I would only need one but if I had veggies canned, I couldn’t use them for a dairy meal. I found a couple dairy canning recipes that I’m interested in trying and am going to give it a go. I have an extra fridge and freezer. The fridge wasn’t for kosher reasons. The rental I just left didn’t have one. The landlord didn’t want to buy mine when I left but I was under the impression she was hoping I didn’t take it, lol. The freezer is a huge help.
