Great video. A few things to mention: 1. The VVT gasket should be put on dry. Do not lubricate it (I noticed you put oil on the outside and inside of the gasket). Oil on a gasket will create a passageway for a leak. As noted, you may want to put some RTV on the top of the inside of the VVT gasket where it fits over the solenoid itself and the outside of the gasket where it fits through the valve cover. However, this is not necessary as it isn't noted in the mazda workshop manual. Other manufacturers with a similar design recommend this. 2. Make sure the VVT solenoid is thoroughly cleaned (use brake cleaner and a rag) to remove any oil. 3. Make sure the channel (on the cover) where the valve cover gasket fits into is cleaned. Spraying brake cleaner and running a rag through works. Again, any oil, debris etc is a passageway for a leak. 4. No need to hammer in the VVT gasket. I've seen this in other videos as well. The gasket fits in with minimal effort. To note, on some older mazdas with a different gasket design, it was necessary to hammer in as the fit was much tighter. 5. Ensure follow correct valve cover bolt torque sequencing as per mazda workshop manual. In addition, it is recommended you do two passes with a torque wrench. Often you'll find on the second pass the bolts that were tightened first are now loose. 6. The most common RTVs out there are manufactured by permatex. Permatex instructs that the final torque of bolts be done one hour after the valve cover is replaced (bolts to be torqued finger tight only initially). Before restarting vehicle RTV should cure for 24 hours. Of course, this may vary with other manufacturers. 7. I noticed another comment about using anaerobic gasket maker. This issue with this is it can not withstand high temps and the high vibration of an engine. In addition, I believe they have minimal oil resistance (permatex for example indicates it is not recommended for valve covers or oil pans). As a result, it will probably fail. Both black and grey RTVs are suitable for valve cover gaskets. Grey is preferred as it is more rigid on cure (and recommended by mazda). 8. The question is often asked if the VVT gasket and valve cover gasket should be replaced at the same time even if one of them isn't leaking. The answer is yes. They become harder and less flexible over time. Even if one is not leaking now, once the valve cover is removed, it will probably end up leaking as the gasket that is not replaced may no longer be able to create a proper seal. 10. When cleaning the engine block where the valve cover gasket sits, use a plastic razor blade. A set with a handle can be found for cheap on amazon. The plastic won't scratch aluminum.
Great video, but there is one correction I'd like to suggest! I just did this repair myself, and there's actually 15 bolts holding down the valve cover, you site several times that there's 14 which is incorrect. I spent about 45 minutes wrestling with the valve cover before realizing that there was one more bolt to take off.

Great video. Gave me a nice visual guide of what to expect as I replaced the gasket and OCV seal on my '14 6 2.5L NA. It has 180,000 miles (~290,000km) and was leaking at the back LH corner. Few comments on what I learned along the way: 1) There are two flanges on the RH side of the cover that you can get your fingers under and pry it up with. The cover was stuck on pretty good at my car's age and mileage. Then lift up and off the OCV as you show in your video. You just have to manipulate that wire harness as you work. 2) There are fifteen (15) 10mm bolts securing the valve cover, all are exactly the same length/style. 3) The factory manual recommends a certain tightening sequence for the valve cover bolts. Basically they want you to start in the middle and work your way out. You did yours in a star pattern which is probably fine, just an fyi. 4) Initially I didn't consider how long the RTV silicone takes to fully cure. The Permatex stuff I used said 1hr to tacky and 24hrs to fully cured. 5) Probably good to do an oil change after this work as dirt, crud and maybe some of the old sealant scraped off can easily fall into the engine.
So you have to wait 24 hrs before driving for rtv to set? Would Permatex 82194 Ultra Grey Rigid High-Torque RTV Silicone Gasket Maker work? That's the one I have. Thanks!

I’m thoroughly confused. My 2015 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring has the 2.5. It looks JUST like this. The part number for the valve cover gasket is the same, but every single website insists that the Oil Control Valve Seal is incorrect for my car. It’s a 2.5, it’s the same engine, it looks the same. I don’t get it. I guess I’m going to order it and see.
the top part of the cylinder head is the same for the 2.5ltr & 2.0ltr. except the bottom end internal would be different. so yeah valve cover gasket & OCV gasket the part number for 2.0 ltr will be the same as the 2.5 ltr.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto I appreciate the response. I work on this car more than my project car. 95k miles and already replaced both high and low pressure fuel pumps (stuttering at high rpms) front driver’s side CV axle (slinging grease at 35k miles) RMM (worn out at 45k miles). I wouldn't describe the failure as normal, but it is common, especially on early 2.0 skyactiv motors. Mine leaks, but barely enough to leave an oily mess. I first noticed mine at 81000 miles, but I've read of them going bad as early as 30k miles, with the replacements failing 30k later.
hi dan. out of curiosity, are you planning or thinking of cleaning the back of the intake valve? gunk buildup is usually the byproduct of our skyactiv direct injection tech. im at 85000km. tried CRC intake valve cleaner and not sure if it worked. once in a while, i feel the engine misses a beat and stumbles. but not really often enough to be a cause of concern. just want peace of mind that down there in the intake valve, its fairly clean.
faced with such a problem for 90,000 km, many in autoforums write that the problem is not only in the seals but also in the valve itself and it also needs to be changed. what do you think? how much have you traveled since replacing the seals? Are there any oil drips? thank you
Last time i change this seal is about 2000kms and i dont have any problems since then and car is on 44000kms or so. I do check it on a regular basis for leaks. .
How did you remove the hose from the intake breather valve, the one where you loosened the clip and pried upwards? I spent over an hour trying to do what you did, but mine is stuck on
i had a misfire in cyclinder one and pulled the plug which had oil on it. discovered this part was leaking, could the oil leaking out of here have pooled and caused the misfire?
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Preston Finley Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
how long it last..because already change..around 6 month but leaking again..😓 it normal or have a solution too make it no leaking again or can last around 1 2 year
I have a oil leak also, is its a Mazda 6 2,5 skyactiv. I changed my oil and a Saw a leak. 100% sure not from oil filter, oil pan/nut. Somewhere from the engine .. what can it be
I just did this job... replaced valve cover gasket and oil control valve... and the oil control valve gasket ( new one ) still leaks ! so use some black rtv around the oil control valve. It's a stupid design and the rubber ring just slips loosely over that oil control valve.
Does the Skyactiv 2.0 have the swirl flaps in the intake manifold like the 2.5 had? Mines knocking and it sounds just like the old 2.5 with the swirl flaps.
Well darn. No clue where this knocking is coming from! I replaced the tensioner cause it was worn but it didn’t help. Doesn’t sound like a rod knock to me. All the pulleys spin free as well
yes correct some mazda cars will have oil leaks from the actual valve it self but double check if its from the seal before spending some more money on that parts.
you just unplug the OCV connection before pulling out the rocker cover. To uninstall the ocv you will need to remove the rocker cover and 10mm bolt holding the ocv assy.
I'm getting an P0302 misfire code. I've changed the plugs. The coil pack. Still getting sputtering at idle and engine light comes on. What else could be causing it? I have a 2016 mazda3 isport sedan Automatic. Please and thank you.
Have you check the maf sensor ? . try to unplug it see if it idles correctly, if its still idle rough n sputtering , otherwise you have to check and tighten all intake pipe / hoses for vacuum leaks. Some owners have experience a vacuum leak on the pcv valves hose or (pcv valves) that is hidden under the intake manifold it is a very common problems for these cars. due to heat and age can cause a possible cracks to those vacuum pcv hose.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto I have not tried the MAF method but I will. Then I will move on next to what you recommend. Thank you so much and keep up the awesome videos. ❤️
I've read of dealers replacing the OCV and gasket under warranty, and the new valve leaking after a month. Something about the OCV design makes it prone to leak.
The online resources for parts lookup are incorrect. The Part number PE01 - 10 - 235 (Valve Cover gasket) Part number PE01 - 10 - 2D5 (Oil Control valve seal) are correct for the 2.5.

Thanks for the part number!
no problems
Awesome video. Straight to the point!!
Cheers man
Does the Mazda have a egr? If yes where would it be located
nope this engine doesn’t have one.
You are the truth!
Cheers bro Godbless.
Would these parts fit a 2014 Mazda 3 2.0L some Mazda resell sites mention they might not
yes it will fit your car.
Hi, thanks for the great video, well done. Where exactly did you apply gasket maker on the oil control valve? Thanks again.
just apply thinly surround the top of the seal prior installing back the engine valve cover.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost the password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Luke Wyatt instablaster =)
@Preston Finley Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Preston Finley it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D
hello I have a question, on what part did you apply the RTV sealant on the new VVT Gasket, Thanks!
theres a marking on the valve cover gasket you can see the pattern. you must apply rtv gasket on it for the perfect seal.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto I mean the Oil control valve gasket
@@JesusMartinez-uw2ve just prior installing back the valve cover apply some rtv around the vvt gasket.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto your video was very helpful, Thanks for your response you’re amazing!

Hey Felix do you know where the engine ground cable is?
near by the shock tower you can find it there.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto it's on a little bracket coming off the engine and runs underneath the coolant resivoir?
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto I'm trying to ground the block better and am thinking of make just adding another cable to the existing ground for the block
@@Littles13579 maybe do a 3 big cable upgrade, theres plenty videos on youtube.
do we need to remove the negative battery ? did you removed it ?
Yes . Disconnect it. To be safe.
How much torque do you have to give it?
the valve cover bolts are 7Nm .
Hi there would you happen to know where the PCV Valve is located?
hidden under the intake manifold. you can see on the other video on intake manifold cleaning service.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto thanks much appreciated. Hard to find almost any information on my car (2017 Toyota Yaris ia) it’s basically a Mazda2/3
how long it last..because already change..around 6 month but leaking again..😓 it normal or have a solution too make it no leaking again or can last around 1 2 year
it should last for more than 6 months but if yours r leaking you have to get it replace. Maybe apply some rtv on the seal for better adhesion.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto oh ok tq..
I have a oil leak also, is its a Mazda 6 2,5 skyactiv. I changed my oil and a Saw a leak. 100% sure not from oil filter, oil pan/nut. Somewhere from the engine .. what can it be
maybe track it first .. wash the leak residue away and in a week check if the leak still there and trace where it come from..
I just did this job... replaced valve cover gasket and oil control valve... and the oil control valve gasket ( new one ) still leaks ! so use some black rtv around the oil control valve. It's a stupid design and the rubber ring just slips loosely over that oil control valve.
ah yeah common problems with these OCV gaskets. We still have to apply abit of RTV sealant on it.
Be sure the oil control valve is not leaking. The oil control valve will leak through the middle
yeap checked on that one. mines are fine. If yours are leaking make sure to replace the part.
Would these parts apply to 2012 mazda 3 i touring? Really difficult to find the valve seal for my car.
Yes definately will work on your 2012 mazda.
Does the Skyactiv 2.0 have the swirl flaps in the intake manifold like the 2.5 had? Mines knocking and it sounds just like the old 2.5 with the swirl flaps.
nope this one dont have flaps.
Well darn. No clue where this knocking is coming from! I replaced the tensioner cause it was worn but it didn’t help. Doesn’t sound like a rod knock to me. All the pulleys spin free as well
@@anthonymassara4288 does it go away after warm up ? or still there ? is it some kind of a ticking noise ??
It does it randomly. Never upon cold start though. I uploaded a few videos of it to my UA-cam.
@@anthonymassara4288 sounds like your hydraulic lifters needs replacing mate.
Thank! Excellent video tutorial!
Thank you bro.
do cx5 and mazda 2 have the same cover gasket size?
nope it does not as they have different part number.
oil leak is directly from the valve not the cover seal, I was a Mazda tech for ten years I have replaced the valve to fix that leak every time.
yes correct some mazda cars will have oil leaks from the actual valve it self but double check if its from the seal before spending some more money on that parts.
bang .. tanya type part ini cocok juga di mazda 2 skyactiv ?
tq bang jika berkenan jawab
Tdk sama bg. Tp cb tanyakan dulu sm diler untuk part number nya. Seharusnya mirip mirip. Cuman beda part bumber.
oke bang terimakasih
Nice Video, what is the brand of the liquid gasket you use?
Didnt i show it in the video. It is brand loctite.
Hi did you remove spark plugs to?
Nope dont have to. Becareful when placing back the new gasket. They prone to fall when putting back on to the engine bay.
How much torque?
Its 7 Nm. Cheers

Do you have any videos idle control valve for a Mazda cx5 2.5
unfortunately i dont have a video in this.

As long as it is suitable for the car it should be fine.
thanks

Did you have a check Engine code for that
@@martinf9626 nah i did not have check engine light prior & after to this service.
What kind of lube did u use on oil control valve seal? @ 7:44
i use new engine oil.
I was totally onboard until you started banging the ocv seal in with your ratchet 😅 I'm sure by now you see the error there
LoL just had to smack it in place as it was not cooperating 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So calm the rest of the video 😂 that thing must've owed you money
Could a faulty PCV valve cause this OCV leakage?
not necessarily.
How do you extract that sensor in oil control gasket? I get a little oil i dont know if its about oil control vale gasket or the sensor
you just unplug the OCV connection before pulling out the rocker cover. To uninstall the ocv you will need to remove the rocker cover and 10mm bolt holding the ocv assy.
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto thank u, is necessary to put a new one cover gasket?? Or just use the same one?
@@heaven1238 I would recommend to replace the seal.

what was the torque?
7nm factory specs
@@FelixDanGarasiAuto thanks Felix!!
@@jenamorado2005 no worries . just a note for the ocv seal you want to put a small amount of rtv around the seal to make sure its seals properly :)
Hey buddy, i did exactly the same steps as you did. After a month, leak started to occur again. Any idea?
...
That i have no clue .
I've read of dealers replacing the OCV and gasket under warranty, and the new valve leaking after a month. Something about the OCV design makes it prone to leak.
Its a common problem on mazdas. Even if you replace the gasket 1000 times. Just leave it unless its leaking like crazy

If you disassemble for example the left the wheel arch you can place the bracket on the frame.
There are some holes.
