Hello Sir! I have a Mazda 6 2015, couldn't find in the manual anything about transmission fluid replacement. So I chatted with a certified Mazda technician about it via the mazdausa website. Told me is not necessary to replace transmission fluid whatsoever in this car. I insisted, they said NO! My car is 89k miles now, any comments? Keep it up!
Yea mostly mazda tech they go by the book as told not to change the fluid , but after seeing my video are you sure not to replace as they are dirty even at 30000kms plus… i would recommend to change atf and the filter. ✌️
Where did you get the plastic dip stick for the level check? One of the toughest part about changing fluid in these lifetime/sealed transmission, is the lack of a dip stick. So far I’ve used volumetric method, measuring what drained out, to determine how much new fluid to pour back in. Mine is a 2012 CX9; before Skyactive.
@@reallifeengineer7214 there should be a dip stick somewhere in the engine bay for your 2012 cx 9. Take a look near by the air intake box. Yeap using volumetric method are also fine.
@FelixDanGarasiAuto I forgot to measure the transmission fluid I removed. So I warmed up my Mazda 6 2013 for 10 minutes before measuring the level with the dipstick. I put in 4.2 liters. Did I do the correct thing? The dipstick shows 65°C between Low and High. I do not have a computer or thermometer to check the temperature of my transmission fluid. Did I do the correct thing?
Mazda 5 2008 I can't see where to fill in the transmission fluid, even the manual for this Mazda doesn't say anything about filling in transmission except on cars with automatic transmission. And my gears are slipping while engage. There is no dip stick to measure the fluid.
Whats the history on the car ? bought it used or new ? I think it needs an overhaul for transmission slippage. Unless you want to give it a quick drain n fill ATF service . If theres no dipstick i would measure how much fluid taken out & put the same amount in after.
@ alright if yours r manual trans u definately need to replace the entire clutch kit it maybe worn out due to age and high ks. Drain n fill will only help to protect the gearing assy inside the gearbox.
I changed my CX5 transmission fluid at 200,000km first time last week since the gear shifting was not smooth. I did not drop the pan and changed the filter though, the gear shift was much smooth. I used electric oil transfer pump to suck the fluid out from the dipstick hole, the fluid was about 3.3L. I will do another drain and fill next week.
I did drain and fill again today. I checked the fluid level at 122F this time and it's below the specified mark, I poured about extra 1L. I used Valovline Maxlife ATF, I don't think this fluid would create problem as I used it on my Camry without any issue.
Hi Felix thanks for all the cx5 videos, I use them all the time for servicing my car. Could you please show the removal of the under car cover guard and removal of the air box .it’s easy when you have done it ,but there may be some doing it for the first time ,and not all as experienced as you thanks again keep up the good work.
If you need some guidance for removing the air box there are instructions for installing the corksport intake kit on the internet. That should give you an idea of what needs to be removed.
its should be okay if you have pass the milage. Just do a drain n fill if its your first time replacing the ATF fluid. Next time service you want to replace the ATF filter strainer.
Nice Video Felix. However, I observed that you missed installing the green o-ring for the filter. Is it ok? I just changed the transmission fluid three weeks ago. The new filter is equipped with two green o-rings. Btw, I bought used car Mazda 6 2014 with the milage around 125000 km. The first owner never changes the transmission fluid because according to Mazda the fluid is a lifetime for the skyactive technology. After long investigation, I decide to change the fluid. The km was 148500 when I change the fluid. So far no issue with the gear system. I advise you to change the fluid before achieving 80,000 km if you want to keep your car for a long time. If your milage is already high (like my case) or above 150000 km, check first the fluid condition. If the fluid too dark, dirty, and very high viscosity, it is better to leave it alone if the transmission is still working, because the change of fluid can cause a slip or the car don't even move on.
@@GarasiFelixDando you know by chance, exactly what amount of oil you has put back in the transmission? I dont have access to leveled place to do it. And it should be standard the exact quantity for a oil pan and filter replacement…Thanks in advance!

Yeap if you are doing overhaul then we would need the whole 7.8L. If you are only doing normal service with filter replacement you will only need 4L or so.
@@GarasiFelixDan Understood, unless you drop the transmission much of it stays in the system like in the old torque converters. Did you use FZ? because there are Valvoline/Molly/STP and other brands with FZ equivalent ATF out there easier to get but I am concerned about mixing them.
This is why I sold my forester that has cvt transmission because it’s complicated. I bought the cx5 because it’s simple to Change transmission fluid. How often do u change the transmission fluid?
aha. Yeah some Subys r very hard to maintain each to their own though. But these skyactiv mazdas r easy to maintain and very accessible for their parts. I would say every 30k to 40k intervals Should be enough.
For the metrically challenged, 9 Nm is 6.6 Ft-lbs, or 80 in-lbs. This isn't very tight at all, but you're tightening a steel bolt in a cast aluminum housing, so guess which will strip first?!? Hint: The more expensive one. I note this because my 1/2 drive digital torque wrench starts at 20 ft.-lbs as the lowest setting, which is over 2x the torque needed. Great video series. How many miles/Km with that much sludge and dirty fluid? I thought you did a video about changing the fluid but you didn't have a filter, so that transmission fluid must have got dirty fast. Probably because the filter wasn't changed, and you didn't clean the sludge on the bottom. Transmission fluid generally has a lot of detergent to it. Recheck the fluid level after a short drive, after the oil's been circulated a bit. There may be air pockets after the fluid is drained that don't get refilled until after the transmission circulates the fluid.
Nice video! Im driving non skyactive mazda6 y2010 2.5. After a cold start and drive, my auto D1 does not change to D2 on high revving rpm. When i stop and restart the car im getting AT warning. Then i stop again for 2-3 times and things back to normal. Recently change my atf but it still happens. I got an idea to reset my electronics by taking out the battery and put back after 15 minutes and seems it solved the problem temporarily for few days. What could it be?
best is to use obd and read the error codes so we r not guessing what part is the one causing the issue. Im sure its gotta do with one of the transmission solenoid.

@@GarasiFelixDan I thought so too that oil has to be change periodically. In this case, how long or how far would you have travel before you change your ATF? Thanks 👍
Mazda owners manual says lifetime but I think they mean that's to the end of the powertrain warranty. If you want it to last I would change the fluid and do on mine. It's simple without the pan drop to do.
9:57 when torquing back bolts do you have spec for Mazda Verisa 2005 model, can't find service manual online, also does 9 stand for foot pounds and then the next settings is for bolt tread 10NM ? (sorry im a newb) but watching yr video I managed to change oil&filter on Mazda Verisa 👍
Thank you for the great video.. i just want to know how many litres do i need to refill after draining and replacing the filter.. is it 4ltr or 4.5ltr?
Thank you so much i really apreciate that. 🙏🏼. So when draining the ATF fluid out out of the drain pan it should be about 4L. But if you are replacing the ATF strainer filter it would be about 4.5L to 4.7L. Please warm up the car first after topping up 4L and you can measure it back using the dipstick measure (grey colour dipstick) and if its leveled properly and at warm operating temp , it should be between the centre marking. Hope this helps.
@GarasiFelixDan I saw a gasket with a filter somewhere on auction, I wonder if this solution wouldn't be better. Thanks for the video, another 5 thousand km and I have an oil change.
You don’t need to change your engine oil. It’s life time. Get it? If engine oil needs to be changed why not the transmission? Heat degrades fluids over time.
Hey Felix, I know this is an old video but transmission fill is temperature sensitive. You need to watch the transmission temperature through OBD and then check the level. Even the dip stick lists upper mark for when fluid temp 122F/50C and you checked it while temperature was normal.
If you have the obd reader tool should use it , but if you dont have the tool just drive it for awhile and should check it after driving, top it up if it necessary.
i personally place the stand on the subframe bolt. As for the jack point theres a jack point right underneath the doors. You will be able to see the chassis point it curves a bit.
Hey Felix, thanks for another excellent instructional video. Can you tell me or show me in another video when you have to jack up the cx5, which point under the vehicle you use to jack up the vehicle? Also after jacking up the vehicle, which points you place the jack stands under? Thanks!

It depends on your driving. After researching, 75k miles is usually the sweet point on trans fluid, but if you live in an area where you go up and down hills and/or you tow small things with the vehicle, 60k would be safe. Mazda claims this is a lifetime fluiid, but that's bullshit. Metal shavings, contamination, and heat all ruin the fluid over time. Hello, If anyone can answer please. How do you tell which solenoid socket is "E,D,F, Etc."?
Thank you in advance.
If you look at the transmission unit from underneath , no 1 solenoid is the furthest back of the trans assy , No 4 is the closest facing the trans cooler. No 3 solenoid comes after the no 1 solenoid. No 2 solenoid comes after the no 1 solenoid. Hope this helps… otherwise seek a Pro technician to help.
Keep it up!

How to know the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid during warming-up?
Warm up the car for 10 mins idle & it should be about 50’C a little bit.

@ yeap should be good to go. As long as its stay in the mid mark on the dipstick you are totally fine. Good work !
@GarasiFelixDan it is a used one, and it is a manual transmission. I would appreciate for now if I can do a quick drain and refill the ATF service.

I will do another drain and fill next week.
perfecto ! keep us updated.
I did drain and fill again today. I checked the fluid level at 122F this time and it's below the specified mark, I poured about extra 1L. I used Valovline Maxlife ATF, I don't think this fluid would create problem as I used it on my Camry without any issue.
The second time drain and fill made the gearbox more smooth than first drain and fill

The aftermarket has new replacement instead of green they are black coloured. :)
Is this the same filter that is on the 2014 mazda 3?
it should be the same. But cross check again with your mazda dealer to confirm.

Checking the fluid level after a short drive is a good idea.
yeap thats a good practice.

No you dont. Just measure how much fluid came out and put the same back in.
The fluid expands as it gets hotter. You need to check at the temperature specified by the manufacturer. I believe 120c in this case.
