Thanks so much for everyones kind words. This update really stinks to say the least but I hope you all recognize how much humble transparency matters to me on this channel. I want you all to follow along and be able to see that not everything is happy when it comes to keeping animals. Today a very hard lesson was learned but it was LEARNED. That mistake won't be made twice. The injured skinks vet visit was today. Dr. Brown said that he looks okay. I have to apply silvasorb gel to the tail and toe for the next little while but he thinks he will make a full recovery and hopefully even regrow his tail! Unfortunately he did mention the animal will likely loose his injured toe (I suspected that). THANK YOU to my Reptiliatus Patrons for helping me get my skink to the vet! Your contributions helped pay for this vet visit. For more information on how to support this channel checkout: www.patreon.com/Reptiliatus

QOTD: yes...I had cats in my animal room. To keep the males away from the girls. They jumped on a lid with the thin screen mesh tops. They broke the lid and ATE 2 of my baby bearded dragons. I produced these bearded dragons and they were 2 of the healthier ones of the 6 that hatched. All of the cages now have home made lids with pointed tops and strong mesh.

Your sense of accountability and honesty is refreshing and incredible. There are unfortunately always risks, always new things to learn, and always the occasional fluke as well. It truly is disappointing that this happened..but try not to beat yourself up. You provide phenomenal care to your animals, and go above and beyond for them. Even then, you aren't perfect, and things sometimes just happen. There are always variables.

Just what I came to say but said better than I could have. I'm so entranced with his relationships with his animals and you can see they truly trust him and he them as well. I have never seen a Tokay that did not require leather gloves and some wrestling if handling is necessary. Not this dude he has them approaching him and taking feeders from him. It's knowledge as well as his kindness is displayed in every video. I'm sure this was a horrible experience that really broke his heart but it's so great he shared it so others do not have to suffer the same mishaps. If I'm every in the position to I would love to have one of these adorable and amazing little skinks but until then I can come here and watch them and learn

I highly respect the transparency that you have with your audience, it shows a lot of maturity, you give our hobby a good rap, which is also something I really appreciate especially considering how misunderstood a lot of these animals are

Thanks for sharing this with us, and making yourself vulnerable to us with your transparency. You take excellent care of your animals, and though mistakes are inevitable, you go to great lengths to make sure they are well cared for.
I personally wanted to thank you for introducing me to my now-favorite lizard, the crocodile skink, as well as the adorable black-breasted Vietnamese leaf turtle!
This story reminds me of trying to raise newts as a kid. We would collect them from a nearby pond (they were the cutest things imaginable) and try to raise them in a fish tank. But nothing we did could keep them alive. If they didn’t die from the difference in the water (we even went so far as to use the very water from the pond), they would crawl out and try to escape, only to dry-up on their trek through the house. We couldn’t figure out how to keep them cared for, no matter what we did. Of course, that was back in the days before the Internet, and there was basically no information available about raising newts. In the end, after about 10 of them met their doom at our hands, we decided it was better not try to to keep them, even though they were so darned cute. Anyway, the moral of the story is that sometimes no matter how hard you try when taking caring of those little creatures, you can still make mistakes.
I hope the new plan works out well, and that your little guy recovers. Can crocodile skinks regrow their tail?

    • @jessecunningham9924
      @jessecunningham9924 2 роки тому +1

Btw, the newts were called Eastern Newts, or Red Efts (though these red guys were less common than the green ones).

I acquired a probable 1.2 trio of Striped Basilisks (Basiliscus Vittatus) a few months ago. As time went on I had my doubts about one of the basilisks being female and turns out he is in fact male as I had predicted, the dominant male being present within the same vivarium suppressed development in the other male. I was in the process of getting a separate vivarium prepared and I came home one afternoon to see a few inches of the newly determined male basilisks tail in the mouth of the dominant male. Lesson learnt, don’t always trust what people tell you and I certainly will be more picky with animals I acquire in future to avoid mistakes like this from occurring again. Fortunately the remainder of the tail has healed up quite nicely and so far no signs of infection are present which I’m very pleased to see and he seems far happier now that he is in his own vivarium!

R.i.p girl. So sad to see her gone and the male injured. I'm glad you noticed and separated them. The fact you didn't hide it or try and blame the reptile is really cool of you. Taking accountability is hard when it has to do with a passing of an animal but i truly thank you for showing us what happened and how to fix it. People need to normalize that even experienced keepers can accidentally make mistakes and the reptile hobby is a continuous learning experience.

This is the first time I've seen one of your setup videos from start to finish like this, and I gotta say, you have some next level genius ideas!! Using the kitty litter and substrate as a building material?? Genius. Your setups are always so lovely. I hope your day goes well, and that your injured skink heals up well, and that Mr. Murder chills out..

I've never had reptiles, but I rescue rats. Had a pair of males given to me, she said they were bonded, happy, friendly. OH BOY! The bigger one was great, all the things she said, the little one? NO WAY!! He was a killer! Killed his bigger buddy, killed another male rat even after being NEUTERED! He was just a horrible nasty biting rat and he lived out his days alone but next to my other boys. I feel for you Dion! I really do!

We’re always learning, we’re not infallible, we don’t know everything, unlike my teenager who thinks he does. This is the real scare of keeping. And every animal is different! And you could have 50 pairs or 2:1 all doing well, but you just never know. So Sorry for your loss Dayyan 😢 though I appreciate your transparency so the rest of us can learn.
QOTD: not really bad, but the more research I do the more that changes, I just took my adult beardie to a new vet for a check up, got some great info that I was feeding too many inverts, he has a vitamin A deficiency and was a bit dehydrated. Doesn’t matter what info is out there on line, it takes a well learned vet to set me straight, I never thought of him as overweight, in fact I tried plumping him up to what I “thought” was a healthy weight, but there it was, so dietary changes are in effect. I wish the internet all had the same info, it’s very confusing considering I’m always looking to learn more and it’s not always correct.

Thank you for sharing your experience for others to learn from. It hurts when you lose an animal, but you did what you could by giving them the best chance in being in captivity. The killer croc might of had a challenge adapting to being out of the wild (assuming they were a wild-caught as most crocodile skinks tend to be) causing the territorial aggression.
Just so happy it wasn't from the golden pair crocodile skink. My heart sunk thinking it was the pair you had the longest.

I’m still in the beginning stages of reptile keeping but something I feel super guilty about is feeding my first female gargoyle gecko with cheap tongs. She goes CRAZY for worms and roachies and would usually bite the tongs and one day I noticed she had a wound on her lip from biting the tongs and I felt, and still feel, soooo bad. She’s my baby! But Dayyan, you’ve been doing this for soooo long, and we can all see that you’re always doing your absolute best for your animals, you clearly care SO much so I hope you’re not being too hard on yourself about it. I know it’s obviously hard to move on from the guilt because when it’s your pet, they’re 100% your responsibility, but things can’t always be perfect and not all mistakes can be prevented. We really really appreciate you sharing this so we can learn too, thank you for being amazing 💚

Oh yes. I had a real rock in my Leo's tank. I was cleaning the tank and managed to drop the rock on my Leo's pelvis. The Vet believed she would lose her leg. And she did. It started at her toes and very shed she lost a bit more of her leg. She now has a below knee stump. All healed. She needs assistance evacuating her stool and urea. Thank goodness I am an old nurse and could help her through. She is 5 now. This happened when she was 1.

Always appreciate how forthcoming you are when accidents happen; it certainly is a hard thing to deal with it.
I had a lid on my original fire belly toad tank that had a small gap around the edge that I presumed was inconsequential. Then 2/3 of them got out of the tank and were eaten by our cat.

One week ago one of my pair tribolonotus novaeguineae past away. I bought them at a reptile expo 3 weeks ago. They had not told me about worming. “Because of the stress the worms and flagellates could cause a problem” is what they told me afterwords. Always worm red eyed crocodile skinks before putting them into the “real” enclosure. Lessen learned! Btw they die an unbelievably long and stressful death with convulsions and screaming (indescribable painful sound to hear).

I’m so, so very sorry that this happened but I want to thank you for sharing it. I had a ball python for many years and he would seem to go a couple months without a meal almost every year as an adult. Maybe try offering a smaller meal just in case, and if that doesn't work and it goes a couple months talk to someone with a lot of experience or go to the vet. I'm sure your snake will be fine. Good luck!

QOTD: Yes, I did. I had a small Chameleon which was fine for months. But one day it startet not eating his crickets. I wondered but didn't really do anything because I thought it was normal. 2 Weeks later it was dead, because he became blind and didn't eat anything.
Later I found out that in Styropor (my walls were made of it) mites are housing very often. I didn't new that those mites "attack" these Chameleons so they become ill. I was so unexperienced and I feel bad for that little guy. After that I never made a mistake again with my animals and made sure I inform myself enough before I buy them.
That's why I came to your channel, so thanks for all what you are doing. You are very helping people! Thanks man! 🦎

Cutting down egg crate diffuser, I use a dremel, it saves a lot time.
As for the diy terrium puddy, here is my mix:
    1. 2 parts untreated kitty
    litter.
    2. 1 part ground coco fiber
    3. 1 part aquarium aquasoil
    4. Add enough RO or DI
    water.
Mix, Voila!!! Nice mud balls or terrium puddy.
My mix is primarily used for jar terrariums. I have used it in a paludarium, alon the wall, and my creeping vines love it.

I’m sorry for your loss of two of your babies. Keep in mind that everything is a learning curve. You seem very careful and thoughtful.
I’m very new to the reptile community so luckily I haven’t had a huge tragedy, thankfully!! But recently we had a keeper post in one of the groups I’m a part of, that a wire had shorted and basically cooked all the animals in a particular rack. He had photos of groups of dead snakes. It was heartbreaking. I felt so so bad for him. But we do depend on machinery to provide the right temps for our cold blooded creatures. So just know you’re not the only person who has felt responsible for loss of life. Sometimes we can do everything right and have it all turn out wrong anyway. :(

And I’d love to keep a couple of the blue White’s tree frog or Dumpy frog. They are just so CUTE. Also I saw a pair on Morphmarket of the crocodile skinks and there’s an adult pair for sale on there. A couple years ago I rescued three hermit crabs from a coworker. I didn't know all their requirements but I did my best. Not knowing how deep the substrate needed to be and not knowing that they need meat and are known to cannibalize molting crabs ended in disaster. I found my smallest one without his exo skeleton and claw. I kept him isolated for two days but he died the night before his vet appointment. Still haunts me to this day.

when I lived in Florida there was a golden pothos that I guess came from my neighbors yard but it took over like half my backyard. now I wish I had took some clippings with me tho since I have two crested geckos and am getting more. but your definitely right about them being hardy! sorry about what happened to your crocodile skink but at least you look at it as a learning experience

Oh no I'm so so sorry Dayyan 😔 I don't think I could handle breeding any animals, especially reptiles. There's so much to consider and too much bad stuff that can happen no matter how much care goes into everything. But I do realize how important it is to breed captive populations of certain animals, like croc skinks. Really appreciate the transparency so that others can learn from thus situation. Rest in peace sweet girl and hope the male is going to be okay ❤

This is fascinating. These are reptiles, so probably a different story, but rats apparently need to be introduced in a very specific way in order for them to cohab. It could be that introducing a new animal to any group could be a bad idea without much info, which is why we study them tho!. I was typing this before you found that it was male, but yeah 😂 dont do the cohab unless you know what youre doing @ viewers.

That must've definitely been a rough day, thanks for sharing the bad news with us regardless of that and i hope the male makes a full recovery in due time.
As for my own personal horror story, involves 2 of my dart frogs dying due to a mistake/oversight i made in their care. let the following story serve as a warning and lesson to new keepers that sometimes overlooking a small thing can have huge repercussions for your animals.
(the first part will be the story of how i lost my frogs, the second part is how i realized the error i had made that cost them their lives)
so this takes place about 4-5 months ago, where i noticed one of my tincs (tinctorius powder blue) was changing colors a slight bit. Going from more saturated tones to a little more dull. At the time i didn't think too much about it seeing as it's not uncommon to see an animal change hue and saturation a little as they age (though i had never seen this before from either them so far during the 2 years i had cared for them).
However 2 weeks later as i was doing my daily maintenance i found him dead in his enclosure. During this time i reached a number of conclusions on what it possibly could've been as i moved the remaining dart frog into quarantine.
Among the conclusions i had thought of the following ones were my main concerns: Disease, possible humidity/temperature or a hygiene problem within the terrarium. Due to these concerns i tried my best to constantly monitor the temps/humidity and also keeping the quarantine bin as clean as possible. These guesses as to the nature of the problem however, were wrong. As i found out the hard way when little under a month later i noticed that the frog had also started to discolor slightly and a day after i noticed it had died overnight.
This was devastating to me, since i had done all i could think of to do for the remaining frog but he still died within a months time. That day i looked over my conclusions and my initial thoughts of what it could be. During this i noticed something i had overlooked up until now, could there be something wrong with the supplement or food? so i started searching, and during my search i hit the one thing i had overlooked this entire time. The one fact that the expiration date on the supplement does not mean i can actually use it for that long, its so stupidly simple and yet i completely overlooked it and used the same supplement for 2 years straight. The thought never crossed my mind that I'd need to replace the supplement before its due date. Luckily for my fire skinks i had only had them for 5 months with fresh supplements at the time i figured this out. so i could make sure these guys stayed as happy and healthy as they are.
So yeah, don't be like me. buy new supplements to dust your feeders every 6 months to keep your animals happy and healthy.

i noticed you hadn’t named most of the skinks yet (or at least shared the names yet) and thought it would be a cool idea to maybe do a name theme where all their names start with s (except zero and heidi) for example, the killer skink could be called savage or something and the bitey female you have could be called sassy? anyway, i’m really enjoying the whole series and you being so transparent through the entire breeding endeavor with these skinks! really inspiring stuff!

Hey Dion, thanks for your really encouraging video, there's better way to learn but the worst always makes us strongest!!
Guys so I'm a new Croc Skink keeper and have a thing or two to ask. I have a pair for around 1-2 month, and planning to breed them. Does humidity and temperature matters when it comes to their mating season? I live in Indonesia, which is a tropical country with a rather hot temperature particularly in the summer days, around 27-33 celcius, and a bit cooler at night. I keep their enclosure in semi outdoor because I cant gave them a fully air conditioned room and prefer them to always have an access to fresh air, especially if its raining. I try to maintain their humidity by mist them every morning with a cold water, and their enclosure also has a water feature which is inspired by Dion's^^ But I'm afraid the environment is too hot for them to mate because I read somewhere on web that their mating season comes when it is more humid and lower in temperature. Appreciate any suggestion or answer so that it will make me understand this amazing creature even more guys :)
    Thank you

Black window screen is much quicker and much easier to work with when covering the egg crate. Personally, I don’t bother securing it, I just lay it down and press peat moss over the top, throw in some plants, and call it good.

I'm sorry this all happened to you. I hope you'll be able to work through the feelings and become stronger from it.
I'm still at the stage before getting a reptile where I'm watching the environment of the vivarium. How do you problem solve possible issues with humidity, lighting, and temperature? Right now, I'm trying to keep the humidity more stable and I'm unsure if the LED plant light is giving enough light because some plants who like light aren't thriving while the shade loving plants seem to be fine.

I had a trio of leos in a large EXOterra with a clay cave system and lots of substrate to dig their own holes. Well, at the end of the breeding season I couldn't get the male out since he wouldn't come out and I couldn't dig up everything without possibly burying them all under hard clay. When I finally got him to come out again (he usually comes to his name since I call and tong feed) I found out why he'd been hiding. He had a large, black wound on the top of his head. Of course I took him out and treated it with Repticyn I think it was - over the counter spray on med. It completely healed after a couple of months. It's just a scar now. So I learned not to keep them in an enclosure that you can't get then out of and don't leave the male in past breeding season. I don't breed them anymore.

I had a pair of peacock day geckos. After about 2 years, the female had a near death experience with some stuck on shed. It left her with a deformed bottom jaw and several of her toes ended up coming off making it difficult for her to climb. She was fine for some time after but every single time she shed I had to help her get it off and ultimately she passed away.
