I love the way Janis responded. Both women endured and/or loved the adulation that came from fame and I know Janis suffered from the cruel things some men said in front of her about her looks in her early, unknown days while performing, but she wasn't about to be a shrinking violet or sulky in the presence of beautiful Raquel. She had made a big name for herself with her singing, song-writing and originality. She was gracious, but certainly held her own in that moment.

I dont think Janis liked herself very much. She is kind of forgotten more today then she was back in the 70s, 80s and even 90s. Not by me though. A true flying comet and tornado of talent. Janis Joplin will forever be a star she will never be forgotten. Young people today are still discovering her music, for instance, Paris Jackson. Like Big Mama Thornton before her these ladies the pioneers will never be forgotten. Janis Joplin comes across as shy in interviews. I heard that she was badly bullied at school. I think with shy children and teenagers with not much confidence bullying happens. I was badly bullied at school and painfully shy so I can totally relate to that. Elvis Presley had a hard time with being bullied at school his story reminds me a bit of Janis Joplin in some ways. Janis Joplin was beautiful both inside and out. I wish that she knew how beautiful she was. I wish that she had found true love too.

That was sort-of an Establishment caricature of Janis; her act became her persona and the two couldn't have been more different. One of the perils of being a groundbreaker who finds success at a young and still-vulnerable age. Her voice and style were so distinct, the two females I think of first when I think of 60s rock is Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. Of the two, Janis was perhaps the more fragile -- ironic considering the power of her music and performances -- but she didn't deserve the label hung on her by the "up-tight." You notice nobody was especially critical of Cyndi Lauper, and I saw a lot of similarities in their act and their persona.

Janis was a VERY insecure woman. So much so, she self-medicated herself to death. Same with Mama Cass. Both treated their bodies as toxic waste pits. Read any biography of either one. Their self-esteem was rock bottom and both tried to dull their constant emotional pain with various over-indulgences. Don't romanticize what was a tragic life story. Great talents; but "self-acceptance" and "sense of worth" were not part of their makeup.

I wish Janis had known how truly and genuinely beautiful she was when she was living. She had a few hard knocks that left some brutal scars. We can all use another reminder to just be kind to one another - Janis would be glad to be that reminder. For her insane talent, generous soul and raw beauty, she went through life fighting tooth and nail to patch her self up and put on a happy face, every step of the way - but she also covered her pain with substance abuse and smack beat her in the end.
