This series is by far my favorite and what ultimately broke my barrier into buying LN after animes. AofB does such a good job at keeping the audience when they are caught but if I had to critique it at all is the lack of good bait to really get more people involved. Its such a shame that I only found this anime and the subsequent LN back in August. Like you, I need more people to rave to about this, its so good.
The first time i heard of 'Ascendance of a Bookworm', around 3 years ago, I became curious with the story. But since we are in a 'isekai boom' I was somewhat doubtful of this series, until i picked up to read. At first i was surprise with the plot and how it was building itself. For sure it was a slow start but i've never seen something so wonderful. Its not a power fantasy, nor does it show magic out of the start. It builds itself slowly and the story makes sure to emphasize that. It makes sure to show you the world, how its structured and how everyone acts, showing its depth, allowing you to understand the simplest things in this world. Its been a year since i've started to buy the light novels and i dont think i have read something that has pulled me so much as this series does. Its a wonder so great i can only feel joy when thinking what will the next volume show us. Because of this i can easily say that seeing someone talk about 'Ascendance of a Bookworm' in a passionable way makes me more than happy.
yeah yeah yeah, to think I always see this in my recommended videos for more than a year, then when I finally Watched and read, I was totally in love not just the story but the characters toooo😍😍😍
What I love most about this anime is that it takes it's culture and norms seriously. Most Isekai when encountered with a class/race discrimination they always do some liberal bullshit and saves the day without any consequences. They turn a world that is new and have a pre existing cultures and norms into nothing but the MC own political/self agenda.
Bookworm is definitely a power fantasy just like all the others. It's just got a more interesting setup and our protagonist really starts at the bottom. She even... doesn't really develop as a character aside from the bit that was removed in the very beginning. It's much more about how she influences those around her starting with Lutz and then with Ferdie.
Impressed so much that you've google translate the story and read through the story! It took some time even for me, who's native Japanese and able to read the web version. However, I do understand how addictive the story, is. Love, love looove it! Nice to find English natives who love this story, too. I would love to see final few episodes of the story in Anime, though I don't know how long it'll take to get to the end of the story... haha Love your YT! Thanks!
@@TheChatteringMagpi and Myne being awestruck at this little old lady who effectively holds the leash to a trio she though uncontrollable. Rihyarda: do what i say Troublesome trio: yes mam Myne: teach me your ways
Thank you! I am obsessed with this series too but I am being patient and waiting for properly translated and published light novels to come out so... I am only to part three volume 2 of the story. Reading the physical copies first feels like such a Myne thing to do anyway!
That, my dear, is true discipline and love for the art. I had zero self control and read whatever crappy Google translation I could get my hands on. But while I won't spoil you I can say it is an EXCELLENT series, even if there are no dragons to be found (yeah, I know 😣)
@@TheChatteringMagpi does she ever ask though? As in, does she ask if they have giant reptilian feybeasts? Dragon is a very vague concept and that is the simplest she can ask for.
@@hyperhare0624 she should have, haha. The way I see it is the author was trying to create other types of creatures that vary from traditional fantasy tropes, so no. Dragons didn't come up.
I actually saw the clip of Bookworm s1e14 on CR UA-cam, and was instantly hooked. After binge-ing s1+s2 in 2 days, I look through YT comments and see that the majority of people complain about anime skipping bits from LN. Started my journey with LN 1, and currently on "Part 2 v04" or LN 7. Loving the series, so far, and i was surprised to see there 27 volumes in total O_O
I felt this didn't give nearly enough credit to Myne as the main character. The reasons i was drawn to this series was it had a bookworm which i could relate to and it was the first isekai i'd seen where the character wasn't op right from the beginning. Her personality and the way she overcame obstacles was the draw. Do i love Ferdinands character yes... but saying he's the protagonist... no way. The second biggest draw is that not just Myne or Ferdinand have character development. Almost every single character in the books gets huge character growth. The world is interesting but the draw is absolutely the cast of characters that you get invested with. As for the anime Ferdinand and Benno both have such sexy voices i'm sure they draw a lot of the fangirls but even in the books with no voice actor they stand out because i feel they are Myne's biggest allies and protectors. lol sorry for the random essay. It is exciting to find a channel that talks about my favorite series!
I found your channel just yesterday, i'm glad there are others who recognize the greatness that is Ascendance of a Bookworm. I basically inhale every new volume that comes out and it happened more than once that i had to force myself to sleep at 3 in the morning instead of continuing reading. I kept holding off reading the web novel though. Somehow this series manages what no other light novel i have read so far managed: even 17 volumes in, it is still as engaging as in the beginning, or rather, it's even more engaging. I love how the story keeps adding more and more layers to the world that don't clash with what was established, but explains them, they were likely thought out from the very beginning, but since Myne didn't encounter them directly and thus didn't know about them, we as readers don't either. Plus, every few volumes Myne gets thrown into a new situation that is quite different from what came before. Those 2 things keep the series from getting stagnant. Well, that, and the dynamic between Myne and Ferdinand ;) Btw i think Benno doesn't get enough credit, he's basically a lower city Ferdinand with a very similar role and character traits. Once Myne's antics grew too much for Lutz to handle, Benno took over to reign her in, but once she got involved with nobility, more and more problems cropped up that Benno couldn't handle either, so Ferdinand had to step in.
i've been reading the light novel and there's nothing i love more than the old married couple dynamic that they have now XD you truly become obssesed once you start to like this series
This anime is so amazing that I bought the light novel sequences. Like you said this anime is like slice of life since it’s so gentle whenever you rewatch it. But I still always wish that one day Myne would be with Lutz. They looked so good and caring for each other like a little couple.
You don't understand how I've longed for someone to go in depth about Ascendance of a Bookworm. I've talked to all my friends about it and they're like "aight i''ll check it out" but never do T.T You're a hero in my books just for loving this story!
I know the struggle. It's so hard to sell people on this story for some reason, but I'm so glad that the fandom is growing so at least there's an outlet of sorts for us to go crazy and talk about it!! 🤗🤗🤗
I already influenced to my friends :v i just say "if you want a really light anime, you should watch it, just watch 5 eps and if you not like it ignore it, but they really like this anime" :v
Ascendance of a bookworm is a reason why I learned my kanjis, I was so addicted to the story to the point where I couldn't wait for the rest of the novels to release.
"Thank goodness no boobah fan service, amiright?" ...30 seconds later... *Daddy Ferdinand!!* 😏 Lol. But seriously.. Love the slow but steady pace of this show. It's chill enough that my 8 and 10 year old kids love watching it (they grew up on Ghibli as much as Disney, so natural progression).
Oh my LAWD! I'm just like you with TenSura. Webnovel, light novel, manga and anime. I keep cross-examining everything....and a flat wallet. Thanks so much for all the info. I really appreciate what you do. Fyi, I kinda dig MynexFerdinand when she gets older...oops! :) I can see this series span out to adulthood. It's got everything an author would need.
I share your thoughts exactly - Ferdinand is the character that makes Ascendance of a Bookworm my favorite series, even a year later. A J-Novel Club subscription with weekly releases has been enough to keep me from diving headfirst into the untranslated Japanese light novels though.
Ferdinand was given a splendid presentation in the scne where Myme and her parents were threatened by the white robed priest. this is a chilling scene, where you see just how far a man can go!
lah lah lah, be excited on the next episodes and character developments!!! You'll experience a "roller coaster ride like" emotions and events!!!! Super Exciteeeeedddd!!!!!
I'm reading the light novels... 1 per day for seven days and I'm on the 8th..... though i started where the anime left off with her being adopted by the nutter man child that is the archduke.... I feel you on the feeling being sucked in.
Your wish that a season with S-tier animation will be granted this year because the freaking WIT Studio has picked up the series and at the end of this year or the next year the season 4 may release
Yes. Yessss. So many reasons why to love this series. I also was underwhelmed by the art of the anime but I gave it a shot as I was curious of the synopsis and it was hook, line, sinker. That's exactly why I am watching this video, looking for someone who is fangirling harder than me.
I’m obsessed with the light novels but i couldnt get past the soundtrack 😭 I really wish more love was put into it even tho it already looks pretty good!
8:38 yes exactly 💯 this is the type of character development in isekai that I've been looking for, from an ice cold to a warm and welcoming, basically from decent human being to more human being. not like that one character development of someone who's clearly degenerate and is into kid to just a degenerate
Nothing has me smiling like ascendence of a book work nor crying from it. I love this series so sooooo much (Kuma Kuma Kuma bear is a close second with smiles though)
I am to the begging of part three volume three and I still WAITING for several plot threads to be finally addressed and dealt with already! Primarily the separate matters with Parues (they are obviously 🙄 feyplants but Nobles no nothing of their existence) and Trombes ( which I can easily see become domesticated with Myne’s knowledge being implemented). Also, a solution to the sanitation disaster of the Lower City! I am so impatient to have these mysteries dealt with!
I was so happy when they announced Season 3... We got a trailer for Season 3 a few days ago!! I'm so happy and hyped... The most wholesome and cute isekai ever 🥰🥰
I've fallen down the same path, minus the Ferdinand obsession, minus the wiki spoilers, minus the google translate of Japanese into gibberish, but same path! Waiting for the next translated light novel book to come out is PAIN though. Watching UA-cam content now to make it more bearable.
I really hope more people give this anime a chance, it's a hidden gem. No cringe, really good story and still realistic. I'm just here waiting for season 3 next year, I really want to read the light novel but I can't even buy anything I want because I'm not an adult yet.
I'm impressed because it happened exactly the same for me: i saw the anime, read the manga, light novel and original Japanese. All in weeks! I spent days reading almost all the time (almost no sleep). Now that I've finished the original, I'm having an abstinence crisis waiting for the new release of the light novel!
This is got to be one of the most realistic fiction animes of all time. Outside of the talking animal spirits, princess mononoke was the same type of realistic fiction set in medieval times. For anyone wanting more of this type, I would suggest a non-translated anime by the name of " beast keeper Erin ''. And another one known as guardian of the spirit Moribito...
@@TheChatteringMagpi I’ve been trying to get all my friends to watch/read it but most of them are shonen die hards and just refuse to watch it. I don’t mind the fact that they like shonen but i do wish that they would broaden their horizons when it comes to anime.
We had a similar journey for this series. Started with the anime, then read the available J-Novel Club light novel translations. Then, Part 2 Volume 4 happened and I became obsessed! Found the original web novel and spent every second of my free time reading the rest of the story. Looking forward to season 3 this spring season 🤩

I love AoB! It’s got an amazing world, I love how the story builds slowly actually. I wish I could read Japanese, but I’ll be waiting for the remaining translated light novels. I’m learning Japanese now though, so maybe I’ll learn enough before they are released.
Haha good point!! Well there's almost 700 chapters worth of content (in web novel, extra shor stories only in LNs, fanbooks, manga, and such) that hasn't been animated so for AoaB fans there's still plenty to read!
About Romance, it's not just a story about a 7 year old. It's a story about a 22-23 year old inside a 7 year old body. Which means every ship is unacceptable with our world norms. With Lutz, it would unacceptable because it would be Urano grooming Lutz. With Benno or Ferdinand, it would be unacceptable because it would be them grooming Myne...
I wanted Myne to be A-Sexual. In her past life it seemed she only had love for books. If they made no Romance and made a story about a woman over coming the patriarchy and had her make a printing press then this anime would have been perfect. I can't get passed thats its a 22 year old Teacher and a 7 year old even if her mind is not. You could argue a 7 year olds body is being used without her consent because she is not the real Myne.
@@jenniferkisner9094 thats awfully especific... and also, It completely doesn't fit the world where the story happens that world is a "manacracy" where the people with most mana make the rules... But of course is more complicated than just that. But gender wise the world is rather liberal, males are usually favored but thats mostly becouse all the complexities of maternity. But mana is more important than gender, To the point where the physical differences are irrelevant. The amount of female knights that show up latter is a big example of that. Also, yeah fantasy relationships are weird, but so far as the translated novels go it has never been creepy (unlike lets say "for my daughter i will defeat the demon lord" which is just ewww) Ferdinand never treats Myne like a child(heck, is almost a running gag of how demanding he is and how despite everything Myne is one of the few that can keep up) and Myne never really behaves like a kid either. they have something of a coworker relationship and a camaradie becouse they are similar in a lot of aspects and the only people who they can lower their guard with.
@@jenniferkisner9094 "You could argue a 7 year olds body is being used without her consent because she is not the real Myne." That is actually wrong. IIRC, the anime cut out one chapter of the novel which makes this clear. Urano *thinks* she took possession of Myne's body, but she's wrong. In fact, Urano was reincarnated as Myne at birth. It's just that in normal situations, the old personality will never resurface, because the new one have priority. But since Myne was always sick in bed, she never created strong memories of her own, and the devouring eroded her as well, which was what enabled the previous life's personality to resurface.
@@daedalron In the anime She talk about how she is not the real Myne. She even talks to Lutz about not being Myne. I think the Author knew the whole 7 year old being with a grown man was going to be a problem so he made all these gray areas. She is not the 7 year old Myne even if she was " reincarnated" If you ever watch Inuyasha they talk about how Kagome is not Kikyo even tho she was reincarnated and that anime explains it better than I can. The Author didn't have to have Myne meet Ferdinand as a 7 year old. Why do you think he did that? The only reason I can think of so he can get people okay with the idea of Grooming. I can't get passed that he meet her when she was 7. Its gross.
On the english wiki there is a banner at the top of each page that tells you whether it's "safe" to read, stating whether the article for the anime, light novel, web novel or pre-pub (sort of work-in-progress publications of the book that is currently in the process of being translated by J-Novel Club). I highly advise any visitor to the wiki to pay attention to these banners, though especially anime-only viewers or you WILL end up spoiling yourself.

AofB does such a good job at keeping the audience when they are caught but if I had to critique it at all is the lack of good bait to really get more people involved. Its such a shame that I only found this anime and the subsequent LN back in August. Like you, I need more people to rave to about this, its so good.
My first anime that convinced me to read manga after 3 episode
The series of bookworm really wholesome and good I don't use wholesome a lot as a word.
I wholeheartedly agree 👍
He doesn’t have a harem w/c gives him my utter respect
I love this show! One of my favorite. Slice of life/Isekai!
That sounds like a player going through NPC quests...
@@davidarvingumazon5024 If taken to the extreme, sure. I think even something like Harry Potter and Wheel of Time fits this mold.
@@DoggyP00 Yeah.
Impressed so much that you've google translate the story and read through the story!
It took some time even for me, who's native Japanese and able to read the web version.
However, I do understand how addictive the story, is. Love, love looove it!
Nice to find English natives who love this story, too.
I would love to see final few episodes of the story in Anime, though I don't know how long it'll take to get to the end of the story... haha
Love your YT! Thanks!

Lets be honest, who doesn't love a little Ferdinand.
Well, that, and the dynamic between Myne and Ferdinand ;)
Btw i think Benno doesn't get enough credit, he's basically a lower city Ferdinand with a very similar role and character traits.
SO who Lutz end up with?
@@davidarvingumazon5024 oh where i'm reading it the story is still not finished so i don't really know who he ends up with.

This anime is so amazing that I bought the light novel sequences. Like you said this anime is like slice of life since it’s so gentle whenever you rewatch it. But I still always wish that one day Myne would be with Lutz. They looked so good and caring for each other like a little couple.
You are not the only one who read through the entire webnovel using Google Translate.
You literally described my journey into Ascendance of a Bookworm. I 100% did become obsessed with this series. I just love this series sooo much!!!
You don't understand how I've longed for someone to go in depth about Ascendance of a Bookworm. I've talked to all my friends about it and they're like "aight i''ll check it out" but never do T.T
You're a hero in my books just for loving this story!
This is Elvira getting Isekai'd here and creating a UA-cam channel
i was hooked because i kept expecting her to kick everyones butt.... any ep now....
Haha not yet. For now she has Ferdinand to do that for her.
Ascendance of a bookworm is a reason why I learned my kanjis, I was so addicted to the story to the point where I couldn't wait for the rest of the novels to release.
"Thank goodness no boobah fan service, amiright?"
...30 seconds later...
*Daddy Ferdinand!!*
😏
Lol.
Right?! Glad you enjoyed the video :D
I share your thoughts exactly - Ferdinand is the character that makes Ascendance of a Bookworm my favorite series, even a year later. A J-Novel Club subscription with weekly releases has been enough to keep me from diving headfirst into the untranslated Japanese light novels though.
My favorite character. I adore him. Ferdinand and Myne are like two pieces of the same coin and for me he is the actual protagonist of the story.
yooooo someone else who got obsessed and found jnovel to binge and the available bookworm content!
Yes I like this anime very much.
season 3 is right around the corner.. woot
You're right. The excessive fan service in most isekai is tedious. I could go my whole life without another accidental groping scene
saaame! i totally ignored the first season because i keep seeing cutsie edits lol i'm so glad i saw that smiling ferdinand pic
I can't wait until the next season comes out.
The way your voice changed at 10:01 while swooning ahem... describing him made me laugh so hard that my brother says I sound like a hyena😂
I shall count that as one of the finest moments in the brief history of this channel. I'm glad it made you laugh 🤗
Ferdinand was given a splendid presentation in the scne where Myme and her parents were threatened by the white robed priest.
this is a chilling scene, where you see just how far a man can go!
I’m still waiting for season three of this. Maine is a glass cannon, but if she wasn’t she’d wreck so much crap.
I love all the scenes with Ferdinand.

The concept is quite simple yet refreshing!
Easily an 8/10🌹
Yes. Yessss. So many reasons why to love this series. I also was underwhelmed by the art of the anime but I gave it a shot as I was curious of the synopsis and it was hook, line, sinker. That's exactly why I am watching this video, looking for someone who is fangirling harder than me.
I love this anime, I've watched it 4 times and I'm already looking forward to the 3rd season.

Congratulations, now that you told me that jnovel exists i have sold my soul for moar ascendance of a bookworm... sigh... XD
I love the story for Myne. I want to see her learn, grow and overcome in a world filled with evil people who just want to exploit her.
Mine's value to us is absolute, we can not afford to lose such a valuable asset execute order 33 to keep the nobles and high priest in check!
I was so happy when they announced Season 3... We got a trailer for Season 3 a few days ago!! I'm so happy and hyped... The most wholesome and cute isekai ever 🥰🥰
Yes, I too was overjoyed. They released new key art for season 3 yesterday and it is simply gorgeous!!!
Imagine a plot twist where he becomes the ultimate villain, only to get the talk-no-jutsu.
I'm impressed because it happened exactly the same for me: i saw the anime, read the manga, light novel and original Japanese. All in weeks! Outside of the talking animal spirits, princess mononoke was the same type of realistic fiction set in medieval times.
For anyone wanting more of this type, I would suggest a non-translated anime by the name of " beast keeper Erin ''. And another one known as guardian of the spirit Moribito...

Haha good point!! Well there's almost 700 chapters worth of content (in web novel, extra shor stories only in LNs, fanbooks, manga, and such) that hasn't been animated so for AoaB fans there's still plenty to read!

8:57 Ferdinand protecc
He attacc
And he has got our girl's bacc
About Romance, it's not just a story about a 7 year old. It's a story about a 22-23 year old inside a 7 year old body. Which means every ship is unacceptable with our world norms.
With Lutz, it would unacceptable because it would be Urano grooming Lutz.
With Benno or Ferdinand, it would be unacceptable because it would be them grooming Myne...
and when everything is unacceptable... Then nothing is
I wanted Myne to be A-Sexual.
@@jenniferkisner9094 thats awfully especific... and also, It completely doesn't fit the world where the story happens
that world is a "manacracy" where the people with most mana make the rules... But of course is more complicated than just that.
But gender wise the world is rather liberal, males are usually favored but thats mostly becouse all the complexities of maternity. But mana is more important than gender, To the point where the physical differences are irrelevant. The amount of female knights that show up latter is a big example of that.
Also, yeah fantasy relationships are weird, but so far as the translated novels go it has never been creepy (unlike lets say "for my daughter i will defeat the demon lord" which is just ewww)
Ferdinand never treats Myne like a child(heck, is almost a running gag of how demanding he is and how despite everything Myne is one of the few that can keep up) and Myne never really behaves like a kid either. they have something of a coworker relationship and a camaradie becouse they are similar in a lot of aspects and the only people who they can lower their guard with.
@@jenniferkisner9094 "You could argue a 7 year olds body is being used without her consent because she is not the real Myne."
That is actually wrong.
Its gross.
Agreed on this being underrated I remember watching season 1 and 2 when it came out it's incredible.
It is. I hadn't binge-watched a series in so long and this one had me hooked once it got going.
They do have some dramatic/sad backstories tho, like Fran (he was graped multiple times as a kid) or Jenny
