Myne's Dream World - What the Anime Missed | Ascendance of a Bookworm

  • The final episode "A Dreamlike World" has Myne take Ferdinand on a emotionally-driven tour of her memories, showing him the life she had in Japan and the world she lived in before she was isekai'd. In my opinion, the anime does a good job of condensing the core elements found in two whole chapters (1 long chapter, in the Light Novel). However due to time constraints it obviously had to cut out a lot.
    If you're new to the anime's fandom, and you've wondered what you missed out on--rejoice! I am here to show you just that and hopefully you will feel like checking out the original source (either the web novel or the light novel).
    Unlike my other video, this is a VERY serious and scholarly video essay/whatever-you-call-it about the light novel we all love...
    Actually.... No. I tried my best, but again, this it turned out into a very Ferdinand-focused video because Ferdinand is our favorite grumpy OP hero, he is awesome, I'm a simp, and I'm certainly not the only one who appreciates more Ferdinand content (I see you people and your search keywords.)
    ANYWAY!! This covers all of the Season 1 and Season 2 anime episodes so don't watch if you haven't checked it out yet... duh.

    The thing I really hated about the anime version is it didn’t include any of Ferdinand’s misunderstandings. Ferdinand kept making invalid assumptions based on the common sense of his world, like assuming Myne was an archnoble on her world based on the curtains and appliances in her home for example. The fact that Myne continues to do the same thing in this world and Ferdinand’s misunderstanding that he was doing the same looking at her world is a nice parallel that the anime completely skipped.

      @@gn3441 Frankly, at a time I was having trouble finding new Bookworm episodes to watch, I started listening to some of the audio book material. While I enjoyed it a bit, when it got to the part when Myne collapsed because she did too much while trying to dump Lutz because she was afraid he would find out the secret of her origins, I tuned out for good. Benno literally roughed Myne up, and his sister Corinna did pretty much the same by simply threatening to tell Myne's mother (as everyone knows, that would mean poor, POOR Myne if Myne's mother found out she was upsetting her bosses). I know I shouldn't say this, but Myne DESERVED every bit of it. In reality, young boys like Lutz don't exist, heck, MEN like that hardly exist, and Myne would hardly have gotten as far as she did without Lutz's help and support, so her trying to cut Lutz out at that stage--well, throwing away a good man like that rubbed me the wrong way. I found out that I wasn't alone, there were readers that dropped the books because they found that the personality Myne had obtained from Urano Motosu simply too hard to take.
      Me, I put it down to a new author who hadn't quite mastered her craft yet. You can write a good story about a paragon of a character, you can write a good story about a character with flaws, even heavy flaws to the point of being unlikable--but the only important thing is whether him or her ENGAGES the reader, that there is something to make the reader identify with the character so that the reader will follow the character throughout the story through thick and thin. And I believe the anime (wisely) realized that, and was careful to acknowledge that while Myne being set in her ways from her old life in Japan was a hurdle for her, it was never in such a way that it would cause the audience to lose sympathy for her. Lutz does become suspicious of Myne, but when Myne's face and body language betray her thoughts, it's clear that what she's really dreading is losing a boy who''s become a dear friend to her (frankly, when the reveal comes, Myne's confession is truly heartbreaking, and we ache for her). And she's always looking out for Lutz, and when she hears about Lutz's problems with his family, Myne is very troubled and tries to look for ways she can help him. Yes, Myne continues to have her flaws, but her triumphs are very hard won, and she painfully but steadily grows through them, until when her history viewed by the priest is concluded, Myne has come to appreciate her new family, and realizes the need to say so while she had the opportunity this time around. That's just part of why I love the show so much.

      @@garythompson7462 everone has difrent ideas of stuff.
      Myne was indeed big egotist at the start, but thats why i love her development as character though the series.
      Stop tying sound like you know the right way to make a story, fine if you for water ever reason did not like it. thats fine (but I cant say I undstand you) but saying " MEN like that hardly exist," thats just your own bias, not a proven fact.
      Im loving the books alot and think they incredible writing, I do think there could have been a bit more drama/action and less detailed descriptions of everyday life down to logbook level lol - yet on the other hand that is also what makes this world so alive and different. it dose its homework it describes its world and shows that its been thought though.
      Anyways, dont really get you complaint or whay you tuned out, I have no problem relating with most charicters in this world. it did take me by surprised how flawed she starts out as, but amassing how minute and yet drastic her change is though the books. its not just the same character, its a character that growes in nature and lerns form the world shes in like a real character dose. change takes time.
      It took time for her to lern to love people just as much as books, and realize how much others did for her.

    I really hated how they did the dream sequence dirty. The biggest problem I had with the anime version of the Epilogue was not how shitty they portraited Myne's world and how blurry it felt despite it mentioned how clear it was in the LN but how they handled the final moments, between Urano and her mother.
    The scene had me in tears when she said "I'm home" before eating and "I'm sorry for dying before I could pay you back..." before the dream ends. In the anime, all she did was be a bratty ungrateful kid, like god, that grinded my gears for a while.

    • @TheChatteringMagpi
      @TheChatteringMagpi  3 роки тому +55

      The emotional beats in this final scene were crucial not only for Myne but also for Ferdinand. I honestly hope that they will handle the end of season 3 better. Fingers crossed!

    • @Szystedt
      @Szystedt 2 роки тому +13

      Yeah, it was a fantastic moment really underlining her character growth and beautifully finishing her main character arc, while I love the anime, the adaptation is honestly pretty bad, the source material is just so good it's pretty much impossible to make a bad series out of it as long as you're not trying to.

    • @TheWriter960
      @TheWriter960 2 роки тому +20

      But the reason it showed Myne being bratty is because, unlike in the LNs, they were ONLY memories. She couldn't interact with them. They were basically a movie of Murano's life as much for Mine as they were for Ferdinand. In the LNs, it was more like a dream based on her memories, where she could change how she acted somewhat.

    Ferdinand’s POV was what I loved about the epilogue! I wish he would have at least been a little more sympathetic to some of Myne’s “strange” opinions later on or maybe his just isn’t good enough at expressing his criticism well enough to the point where Myne could accept it, but it is funny how some of Myne’s opinions come back to bite her a bit. Then again I also just love the small points that link up, like the price of the magic tool that saved her life. That part is toward the the end of part 4 volume 3. The second season ends at the beginning of part 2 volume 3 (Ferdinand and Karstedt meeting to discuss Myne).

  •  3 роки тому +74

    Now lets all pray that season 3 gets decently adapted, as great as the epilogue for P2V2 is, season three´s (I would guess) finale will adapt one of the story´s strongest points and scenes, but for all the action we might get, the slower paced ones are just as important. I just hope they don´t cut stuff for more flashy ones, bc at it´s core, Bookworm is best when it comes to it´s characters.

      Then you missed out on how conniving Corinna can be. There is a scene in an epilogue where Beno discusses Myne to her and brings up the devouring with Otto. The one thing I dislike about the anime is that it whitewashes some of the aspects of the characters, like Myne being firmly atheistic at the beginning to her feeling a presence while restoring mana to the land. Or the clear unambiguous utilitarian view of her family to a loving one.

    As an absolute lover of this series, who has watched the anime multiple times, then read the manga (Part1 only yet, waiting for the full release of other parts), then read the Light Novels (currently Part4V1) and still can't get enough, this video was sooo enjoyable.
    Especially where each part of the dream was accompanied by an appropriate background, whether it be a clip from the anime bit or a beautiful illustration, it already was enough to supplement the movie that played in my mind when I read the LNs.
    .
    Also, since I watched the anime first. I totally agree that even though this sequence in anime dropped a lot of detail, it was still beautifully done.
    A person coming from the LNs to anime may feel a bit sad at the cut, but I going from the anime to the LNs had a blast as it felt like exploring more hidden lore of the series that you watched and loved.
    .
    I just can't wait for June to come faster so I can binge S3.

    I had to do a double-take when I saw my comments in your video.
    Here's a topic I don't hear much about Bookworm in general and is the idea of casual and keigo (honorific) speech and conversation in a western medieval period setting. It's a very Japanese idea to layer your speech in specific strata based on your familiarity with the person you’re speaking to. And you see Myne getting ahead in life by polite conversation with strangers, at first, like Benno and Otto for example.
    It's one anime that doesn't make keigo speech sound “off” in a western-medieval styled world, because she spent so much time with those particular layers and relationships in the world. It's a testament to great world-building.

    I haven’t read the light novel…yet…and I agree with the majority of people saying that the anime missed out of Ferdinand’s misunderstandings, but I really like how in the anime, the circlet only played memories and didn’t allow Ferdinand and Maine interact with how Maine remembers it. It makes a lot of sense with how the circlet was described, and gave so much weight to Maine not being able to thank her Mom.

    I was fairly disappointed with the 2nd season overall, it felt rushed to me when compared to the 1st season. The finale pretty much proved it for me; all the events of the season were leading up to the dream sequence, but it was rushed. They left so much out from the LN, especially Myne/Motosus goodbye to her old life & her Earth Mom. That was a powerful scene in itself in the LN, shocked me that it was taken out.
    Realistically, they should have had the scene where Ferdinand meets Karstedt during the credits, & made the dream sequence a little longer in the bargain.

  • @justinalicea1590
    @justinalicea1590 23 дні тому

    I see that even the manga cut out material, but I say that it did an excellent job of portraying what was needed and even making it more emotionally impactful. We go to the library, we see the school and then we go to Myne's house for her to bathe. She then thinks about eating food, only for her mother to suddenly cut in with suggestions. This causes so much emotion to well up in Myne that she actually stops hearing Ferdinand in her head. And then her apology is so powerful in the manga, bringing her down so hard that she turns into Urano for a moment, and then the connection is broken, putting the reader face to face with the crying Ferdinand. It's so powerful.

    Holy shit, it's a massive shame this didn't make it into the anime. I'd love watching even multiple episodes of this sequence. Something Isekai doesn't get enough of is the connection point BACK to earth and how impressive memories of Earth could be to most Isekai worlds. Then this goes deeper with the layer of emotions and communication with him. Glad I found this video after idly searching for Bookworm content (though I can't bring myself to read the novels because I like the animation so much, and I have a hard time rewatching or rereading things).

    Light novels are much better because they are arranged after web novel war written. Translator is also very good. There are 25 books. Not all are translated but they will be. Author made first world and general plan how story begins, progresses and ends before writing first chapters. Because of that you do not have “things happen” parts like in many other novels that do not plan far ahead.

    It really was one of the best parts in the light novels! I laughed so hard at the bath scene. I loved how he kept misunderstanding what things were or why she had them. It gave such great insight into both their characters views of the world. I remember staying up late reading it on my kindle and just bawling in bed at the part with her mother. The being able to process her grief over her own death and the loss of her family and the regrets she had from dying so young and abruptly really tugged my heart. I also like the chapters in the books about her neighbor that was kind of the lutz of our world. I wish they'd left some of those in the anime.

    I so feel that the exact OPPOSITE is portrayed in the anime than what we got in the LN. The anime dreamworld is like Urano's memories on rails. Think of it like this: on October 22, 2014 Urano walked into the library, proceeded down the hallway, glanced at another woman reading and grabbed her book to read. The LN has interactions where Ferdinand asks Myne to pay attention to something else. Myne is only limited by what she remembers, she is the player and can do what she wants. She can't check out a book she has never read before, but that is just life, you can't read new books when you are dead. When she brought her mother into the scene, it was because she wanted to eat her MOTHERS cooking one last time. Urano is fully capable of cooking all those dishes herself. It's more than just the flavors she wants, she wants to relive one of her last meals and say goodbye. The anime does this scene so sloppy, and then there is the forced hug on Ferdinand where he pushes her away... man, right now I'm thinking s3 should just start by redoing that final episode right. Oh, I think that Part 2 volume 3 is the best book of part 2, but that dream sequence does come back later in a couple of references that would be COMPLETELY missed as is, so we should get them done right.

  • @albertoswald8461
    @albertoswald8461 9 місяців тому

    The dream sequence where she was eating her mother's food really got to me. My mother died in 2010 from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer which also messes with your bone marrow. That woman made the best damn lasagne recipe I've ever had. And it even tasted better if you let it sit awhile. Even after being frozen it still tasted great! She would never give me the recipe though. Anyway, early morning of November 4th she dies after I had the breathing tube pulled. She'd gone brain dead a few days before after being oxygen deprived from choking on a sandwich (I was at work). Later that day at lunch I heated up a tray of lasagne that I had taken out of the freezer a couple of days before. I'm about 4 or 5 bites in when I realize this.....at 39 years old I will never,ever be able to eat this again!!! Not just that Mom couldn't make it again but I couldn't recreate it because there was no recipe!!!!!!
    Just once in your life, listen to me!!!! If you have a relative or friend who makes something that you love...GET THE RECIPE!!!! I don't care if you have to throw them on the ground, sit on their chest and strangle them...GET THE RECIPE!!!!! I'd cheerfully do five years in prison if I knew when I got out I could make Mom's recipe again!!!!!!!
    You can understand now, I hope, why a middle-aged man cries like a baby for the first time this century when he watches this anime episode. I don't wish that on you but I do hope that you enjoy(enjoyed)it!!

    Generally the LN adds to the anime experience but you can still get something out of the show without reading it if you're not the reading type. This sequence is the one exception to that, and anyone watching the anime should read the epilogue of volume 5 before watching the anime version of the sequence.
