WARNING MATH RANT: The area of a circle is equal to Pi times Radius squared. If we go by the image of the crater in 1:14 and compare it to the radius of the patch of land that the knight healed, we could say that the crater has 6 times the radius of that patch of grass. Now in 2:10 we can see an approximated height of 5cm or 2 in for the grass the knight was able to grown. We also see that Myne's grass grows so rapidly that it covers the knight's head with easy. An average human male's head has a circumference of 57.2cm/22.5 in. that's a height of approximately 18cm/7in. We can guess that Myne could have easily surpassed this and grown grass as tall as 25cm/ 10in. Grass also needs to grow roots properly. This part is a little more tricky since the estimates are all over the place. Some of the deepest roots can be 2.4m/8ft deep and as short as 7.5cm/3in. We will average how deep the roots grew by a factor of three times its height. This means that the Knight grew grass 5cm/2 tall and 15cm/6in deep while Myne grew grass 25cm/10in tall and 75cm/30in deep. This tells us that Myne grew a patch of grass 6 times the radius of the patch the Knight grew, and 5 times as deep/tall. Back to the area formula of a circle we can see that a 6 times higher radius results in 36 times the area. This we multiply by 5 times the total height and depth of the grass and we obtain that at the bare minimum Myne grew 180 times more grass than the knight did while barely breaking a sweat! This is a rather way of saying... Myne is a savage!

Also I simplified grass roots length and kept it at the same ratio for both Myne and the Knight. In truth, the grass that Myne grew would've needed deeper roots to stay that tall and/or the knight's grass would've needed more shallow roots. I'm not a gardener so a quick read and oversimplification is as much as I can do. I am very glad for the very positive reaction that many (you included) have shown over my comment. Thank you all!

I really wonder if you read the novel and wrote it because of that or if it's possible to say this just by watching the anime. I have only read some ahead since I rely on the novels that have been translated so far, but it seems to go that way.

I like how in any other anime she’d be an absurdly op protagonist but because the focus on the story is so detached from magic and combat that Mynes OP abilities serve as a plot complication rather than a straight forward means to an end.
that's my favorite thing about this series. it focuses so heavily on the mundane aspect that when things finally run back to the supernatural, you're reminded all over again that myne is so insanely powerful that holding back is literally causing her health problems.
not just because she's detached from it, but because the power she has is threatening her life, it's not just free power like every other op protagonist
It's more than that, the issue is so often the world is so poorly built that OP characters just get left alone, when AoaB shows the realism to have the opposite happen. Being super OP complicates your life because powerful people take an interest in you.

I love the symbolism of Myne blotting out the knight who abused her with the grass grown through her power. She proves in seconds that she's so far his superior, she literally eclipses his very existence.
She's not really overpowered, if it weren't for her family and friends she'd already be dead, it's taken a lot for her to reach the point where she's able to be genuinely powerful and she's still under threat even leading up to this moment.
I would say this is even more satisfy than just that you see, this is not putting him in his place, but mure like making him eat his words "you are infirior to me" he says when placing his abilities where his mouth was, he fainted with not even half of the work done as the aristocrasy´s work is to provide magic for defence and development while Main, a little sikly girl from a poor family, demonstrated she was superior to anyone there a humble pie whit the spice of a knucle´s sandwich
It can't stop thinking about how they're animating her talking stuff like "remember that she's the only one who is using shampoo so let's make her hair extra shiny all the time". 😂😂😂
It’s always amusing to find that almost every new character (particularly non-evil nobles) will make the same observations about Myne’s appearance, usually about her hair and eyes, when meeting her for the first time. They see her glossy dark-blue hair as reminiscent of the sky after sunset and her golden eyes being like the moon, and often take these traits as evidence of the God of Darkness and Goddess of Light’s blessings. One of my favourite passages in the Light Novel is from the first Volume where just after Tuuli makes this observation, Myne starts contemplating how genetics must factor into these traits only to conclude that thinking about it would just be a waste of time. I’ve come to the conclusion that rather than being strictly genetic, a person’s hair/eye colours are often influenced their birth season and elemental affinities, respectively.
@@stevelordofdarkness2340 A bit late to reply, but oh well. Basically, while figuring out dyes and ink with Heidi they discovered that the process was really inconsistent. The explanation for this was that everything contains mana with some mix of elements, and the resulting dye reflects those elements as opposed to the color of the plant itself. I imagine that hair and eyes work the same way, in that they're 'dyed' by their own mix of mana elements. Even though a commoner might not be able to use magic, every living being has a miniscule amount of mana that's present enough to have effects on their appearance like this

this series really snuck up on me, at first i watched it with really low expectations but it did everything so well its my favorite anime so far this year for sure.
Imagine - the sickness that was killing people stemmed from OVERFLOWING, untapped magical power. Teach them the magical arts instead and suddenly, not only do people stop dying but you also get FREE MAGES!
not...really. Like 95% of the devoured children barely have enough mana to qualify as low ranked nobles. Myne is completely irregular. She's only survived that long because of that whole soul coming from another world and that absurdly strong obsession for a goal (books) helping her to keep in check her own mana, as well as the usage of a magical item one year prior.
@@zefyrisd69 Yeah, but the magical item was used to siphon the excess power away and seal it within, instead. Whether the sick and poor don't rank up as low nobles is not really relevant: a low-level mage still has an advantage over a normal, no matter how meager. Plus, not dying is always a benefit. I will concede, however, that Myne/Main's soul-linking exceptionality as well as her *utmost determination* to become a librarian grants her a strength of will that few possess in the setting.
If they do that, in few DECADES, there will be more Mages from commoners than Nobles even if only small % become a mage. That would usurp the power of Nobles and thus will not allow to happen.
@ Zefyris D Spoiler- in the LN the reason she is so powerful is because of all the times she nearly died and had to suppress the mana herself. It increased her potential. At best she would have been a laynoble level. So all that suffering wasn't for nothing. Nobles knew of this method but would never intentionally do it when they have magic tools on hand.

Yep, those last 2 episodes were a lot more than I expected out of this show. Real nice way to cap off the season and all of it's glorious worldbuilding.
Just in case you don't know, but the anime leaves out a lot of the small item world building. I really miss that part that is in the books. Not to mention that the manga's drawings are incredible while the anime looks more like a low budget production.
The crazy thing is that this is Myne holding back. She has about 100 times the amount of magic power that knight had, when she's holding back, and after a battle with a demon tree that nearly kills her.
One fantasy trope I find pretty hilarious is the "magic tongue" trope. In most anglo-phone countries, Latin is the "magic tongue" unless you're crazy enough to make your own. But in Japan, the magic tongue is German and I think you can guess where that connection comes from.
While Ferdinand didn’t punish him physically, he humiliated him and hurt his ego as a noble. Best man. Also My brain cells is that green haired man (trying to heal the land) who is trying their best in the final exam.
He disregarded what Ferdinand, a noble higher in rank than him, so ...The only reason the other guy wasn't executed was bc Myne said he defended her and asked for them to be lenient
This series really makes magic feel magical, love displays like this where rather than some blast of energy it's a display of how one can change the world around them with such power.
I cannot express how much I adore this show. If you're a nerd who enjoys character depth, lore building, and shows that take their time to do both, then this anime is for you.
"Character depth" I really really like the show, but the character depth isn't that good really, and it's angering me that they' didn't even comment about when she started reading books at the temple's library, for me personally it feels like the plot is way too forced as well. (sorry for the lack of coherence, haven't slept in a while)
This is actually in my top 5 favorite anime now. The world building and characters are so well flushed out. I watched all of season 1 and 2 in 2 days. I could honestly watch this show all day every day at the pace they're going. This is the kind of story telling that I love for and I wish this was a 500 episode anime lol.

Out of context, this may seem like nothing. One would have to watch the show to truly comprehend how much this moment is earned. Even though the show promised fantasy elements from the start, it generally shied away from them to focus on more mundane concerns. The main draw of this series is its focus on the mundane...Myne bringing some of Japan's creature comforts to this world, her business, the social challenges of being a pseudo-noble priestess who's actually a commoner. It has been implied throughout that she's pretty powerful, the end of the first season makes that clear, but they don't wear it out like other isekai do. As a result, this moment is impactful. It's a culmination of two seasons while not CONSUMING those two seasons. This series has so much going for it, so many meaningful threads, that there is plenty left for Myne to do without focusing solely on fantastical elements. And that's why I love this isekai. It is like no other.
Most fantasy stories envision mages controlling the elements of fire, ice, lightning, etc., and bending it to their will. Unleashing terrible destructive power and destroying their enemies. But a child with a matchbox can destroy an entire forest. Magic that can breathe life back into the world, that is a power all unto itself.
Fun fact: that dude is actually the weakest of the knights (2nd maybe if Damuel is included). He was sent to the temple for having too little mana and was only brought back after the massive mana shortage following the war
In the books there was the extra detail in that by "showing off" her immense mana pool, many on the Knights/Nobles were looking at her with predatory eyes during this scene as a breeding tool to be forced into some marriage or other to strengthen their family and position.
i'm surprised they didn't touch onit, as while it shows just what kinds of people nobles are, shizka already got the point across more than well enough. though season 3 is probably gonna lead in with some allusion to that.
@@Ikajo I wouldn't say "sow", as even assuming they got hands on her, there was likely nobody capable of matching her mana level in the families of about 80% of those knights, so breeding wouldn't be possible (and most of them would have known that the moment she performed her blessing at such a scale without collapsing). Even among the adults most would have been incapable of matching her levels at that point. they were looking at her like more of a powerful battery/mana tool really.
Everybody: men this girl just own the green haired dude. Me: holy s***, there gonna be consequences for showing to much power, Myne you better be alert.
Honestly the moment after in the novel was scary. The men looked at her like a toy they could possibly own. The only thing that stopped them was Ferdinand who could literally curb stomp them into the next century.
This scene reminds me of the final movement of "Firebird" from Fantasia 2000, where the aspect of mother nature regrows the land after the devastation of the volcanic eruption. If only she had kept going and really showed the knights just how magically gifted she truly is. Oh well, another time.
the subtle implication of this scene is Main has even MORE mana, she''s only "mildly" flexing here, and I think Ferdi picked up on that cause if she had continued on she'd have raised more then eyebrows for having that much mana somehow.
@@SalinaMoonfall Most likely royalty of not only homeland country would've gotten some info on her existence. I like the premise since it seems like nobility does not have so much mana anymore but same time the most prominent families became nobility largely BECAUSE they had vast amounts of mana in generations prior. You could say Myne is more of a noble by origin than most of the nobles alive despite lacking any pedigree. By the way some nobles react I would imagine her to be someone on par with royalty (esp reactions of our Blue Haired priest who likely met royalty 1st hand many times)... which arises many questions for them, many problems for her and oh so many possibilities for future. Nice writing overall~
@@dandare9055 Blue haired priest is the half brother of a noble and most other priests are at least the lowest status of nobility. The nobles of this world also commonly marry commoners with magic into their house holds, which probably contributes to their family lines retaining larger mana reserves over generations. This was touched on a bit with the pink haired granddaughter of the Merchants guild head who is to be married off to a noble to gain access to magic items that allow her to control the excess mana in her body.
Only Ascendance of a Bookworm could make the simple in concept task of using magic to (basically) make grass grow as impactful and entertaining as it is here. Like, really, can you think of any other anime that brings this much hype and importance to something another anime would use on a much smaller, humbler scale as an introduction to the idea of magic at all, let alone being the height of impressive magic feats? What a show. An absolutely perfect display to round out the anime's second season. This is gonna be one that I hope makes huge waves in the Isekai formula and expectations going forward.

I always have two points when I watch this scene. First, there’s a continuity error with Ferdinand’s cloak. It’s blue, except for the shot where he’s taking the staff from the knight, where it’s colored yellow suddenly. Second, when that music kicks in, it’s really really good. I hope that’s a recurring musical motif that gets developed more as we watch her grow as a character.
This is also Ferdinand personally punishing Shikikoza-- bit of a spoiler, the junior knight doomed himself and put his family in serious trouble for what he did in the prior episode. Ferdinand knew the knight order would punish Shikikoza appropriately, but he wanted to wring out the stupid noble first in addition to getting the order on Myne's side.
Shikikoza: "I will be punished..." Ferdinand: "Oh my sweet child, physical punishment isn't all that you will be receiving!" Shikikoza: "Huh?!" Myne: "I'm about to end this guys whole career... literally!"
The story behind that is twofold. 1: Veronica (the previous Aub Ehrenfests wife) took his Ehrenfest cape, since he "didn't need it, since he was going into the priesthood". The reality was that she was trying to humiliate him further, even though technically speak she was correct. 2: The blue cape he won in a match against a Dunkelgelger knight when they were both in the royal academy, he's been wearing it ever since.
Reading the books and this series is just so over the top I love it!!! The only problem is I can finish the novel in one day and then I gotta wait months for the next book release. 😭 Myne is a BEAST!
I just noticed an animation error. I have rewatched this anime so many times and this particular scene even more. But at 1:05 Ferdinand's cloak is yellow/orange not blue.
As somebody who's read up to what's current on the english light novels, I can't wait for Part two to be finished, and Part three to get an anime. I sincerely hope the whole source material gets covered either way. It only gets better.

She's not really overpowered, if it weren't for her family and friends she'd already be dead, it's taken a lot for her to reach the point where she's able to be genuinely powerful and she's still under threat even leading up to this moment.

It’s always amusing to find that almost every new character (particularly non-evil nobles) will make the same observations about Myne’s appearance, usually about her hair and eyes, when meeting her for the first time. They see her glossy dark-blue hair as reminiscent of the sky after sunset and her golden eyes being like the moon, and often take these traits as evidence of the God of Darkness and Goddess of Light’s blessings.
One of my favourite passages in the Light Novel is from the first Volume where just after Tuuli makes this observation, Myne starts contemplating how genetics must factor into these traits only to conclude that thinking about it would just be a waste of time.
I’ve come to the conclusion that rather than being strictly genetic, a person’s hair/eye colours are often influenced their birth season and elemental affinities, respectively.
@@stevelordofdarkness2340 A bit late to reply, but oh well. Basically, while figuring out dyes and ink with Heidi they discovered that the process was really inconsistent. The explanation for this was that everything contains mana with some mix of elements, and the resulting dye reflects those elements as opposed to the color of the plant itself. I imagine that hair and eyes work the same way, in that they're 'dyed' by their own mix of mana elements. Even though a commoner might not be able to use magic, every living being has a miniscule amount of mana that's present enough to have effects on their appearance like this

not...really. Like 95% of the devoured children barely have enough mana to qualify as low ranked nobles. Myne is completely irregular. She's only survived that long because of that whole soul coming from another world and that absurdly strong obsession for a goal (books) helping her to keep in check her own mana, as well as the usage of a magical item one year prior.

Whether the sick and poor don't rank up as low nobles is not really relevant: a low-level mage still has an advantage over a normal, no matter how meager. Plus, not dying is always a benefit.
I will concede, however, that Myne/Main's soul-linking exceptionality as well as her *utmost determination* to become a librarian grants her a strength of will that few possess in the setting.
If they do that, in few DECADES, there will be more Mages from commoners than Nobles even if only small % become a mage. That would usurp the power of Nobles and thus will not allow to happen.
@ Zefyris D Spoiler- in the LN the reason she is so powerful is because of all the times she nearly died and had to suppress the mana herself. It increased her potential. At best she would have been a laynoble level. So all that suffering wasn't for nothing. Nobles knew of this method but would never intentionally do it when they have magic tools on hand.

Yep, those last 2 episodes were a lot more than I expected out of this show. Real nice way to cap off the season and all of it's glorious worldbuilding.
Just in case you don't know, but the anime leaves out a lot of the small item world building. I really miss that part that is in the books. Not to mention that the manga's drawings are incredible while the anime looks more like a low budget production.
The crazy thing is that this is Myne holding back. She has about 100 times the amount of magic power that knight had, when she's holding back, and after a battle with a demon tree that nearly kills her.
The gods have German names, the water goddes fruhtrane (Frühträne) literally means early tear and the earth goddes geduldh (Geduld) means patience.

One fantasy trope I find pretty hilarious is the "magic tongue" trope. In most anglo-phone countries, Latin is the "magic tongue" unless you're crazy enough to make your own. But in Japan, the magic tongue is German and I think you can guess where that connection comes from.

"Character depth" I really really like the show, but the character depth isn't that good really, and it's angering me that they' didn't even comment about when she started reading books at the temple's library, for me personally it feels like the plot is way too forced as well. (sorry for the lack of coherence, haven't slept in a while)
This is actually in my top 5 favorite anime now. The world building and characters are so well flushed out. I watched all of season 1 and 2 in 2 days. I could honestly watch this show all day every day at the pace they're going. This is the kind of story telling that I love for and I wish this was a 500 episode anime lol.

Out of context, this may seem like nothing.
One would have to watch the show to truly comprehend how much this moment is earned. Even though the show promised fantasy elements from the start, it generally shied away from them to focus on more mundane concerns. The main draw of this series is its focus on the mundane...Myne bringing some of Japan's creature comforts to this world, her business, the social challenges of being a pseudo-noble priestess who's actually a commoner. It has been implied throughout that she's pretty powerful, the end of the first season makes that clear, but they don't wear it out like other isekai do.
As a result, this moment is impactful. It's a culmination of two seasons while not CONSUMING those two seasons. This series has so much going for it, so many meaningful threads, that there is plenty left for Myne to do without focusing solely on fantastical elements.
And that's why I love this isekai. It is like no other.
Most fantasy stories envision mages controlling the elements of fire, ice, lightning, etc., and bending it to their will. Unleashing terrible destructive power and destroying their enemies. But a child with a matchbox can destroy an entire forest. Magic that can breathe life back into the world, that is a power all unto itself.
Fun fact: that dude is actually the weakest of the knights (2nd maybe if Damuel is included).

In the books there was the extra detail in that by "showing off" her immense mana pool, many on the Knights/Nobles were looking at her with predatory eyes during this scene as a breeding tool to be forced into some marriage or other to strengthen their family and position.
i'm surprised they didn't touch onit, as while it shows just what kinds of people nobles are, shizka already got the point across more than well enough. though season 3 is probably gonna lead in with some allusion to that.
They did touch on it, mostly dialogue and one panned frame where Myne is standing in a crowd of suitors offering her their hands.

@@Ikajo I wouldn't say "sow", as even assuming they got hands on her, there was likely nobody capable of matching her mana level in the families of about 80% of those knights, so breeding wouldn't be possible (and most of them would have known that the moment she performed her blessing at such a scale without collapsing). Even among the adults most would have been incapable of matching her levels at that point. they were looking at her like more of a powerful battery/mana tool really.
I love how sent a magical message, was leeched on by the trumble, and did this whole spell and wasn't even phased.

the subtle implication of this scene is Main has even MORE mana, she''s only "mildly" flexing here, and I think Ferdi picked up on that cause if she had continued on she'd have raised more then eyebrows for having that much mana somehow.

I like the premise since it seems like nobility does not have so much mana anymore but same time the most prominent families became nobility largely BECAUSE they had vast amounts of mana in generations prior. You could say Myne is more of a noble by origin than most of the nobles alive despite lacking any pedigree.
By the way some nobles react I would imagine her to be someone on par with royalty (esp reactions of our Blue Haired priest who likely met royalty 1st hand many times)... which arises many questions for them, many problems for her and oh so many possibilities for future.

@@dandare9055 Blue haired priest is the half brother of a noble and most other priests are at least the lowest status of nobility. The nobles of this world also commonly marry commoners with magic into their house holds, which probably contributes to their family lines retaining larger mana reserves over generations. This was touched on a bit with the pink haired granddaughter of the Merchants guild head who is to be married off to a noble to gain access to magic items that allow her to control the excess mana in her body.

Only Ascendance of a Bookworm could make the simple in concept task of using magic to (basically) make grass grow as impactful and entertaining as it is here. Like, really, can you think of any other anime that brings this much hype and importance to something another anime would use on a much smaller, humbler scale as an introduction to the idea of magic at all, let alone being the height of impressive magic feats? What a show. An absolutely perfect display to round out the anime's second season. This is gonna be one that I hope makes huge waves in the Isekai formula and expectations going forward.

I always have two points when I watch this scene. First, there’s a continuity error with Ferdinand’s cloak. It’s blue, except for the shot where he’s taking the staff from the knight, where it’s colored yellow suddenly. Second, when that music kicks in, it’s really really good. I hope that’s a recurring musical motif that gets developed more as we watch her grow as a character.

This is also Ferdinand personally punishing Shikikoza-- bit of a spoiler, the junior knight doomed himself and put his family in serious trouble for what he did in the prior episode. Ferdinand knew the knight order would punish Shikikoza appropriately, but he wanted to wring out the stupid noble first in addition to getting the order on Myne's side.

Ferdinand: "Oh my sweet child, physical punishment isn't all that you will be receiving!"

The story behind that is twofold. 1: Veronica (the previous Aub Ehrenfests wife) took his Ehrenfest cape, since he "didn't need it, since he was going into the priesthood". The reality was that she was trying to humiliate him further, even though technically speak she was correct. 2: The blue cape he won in a match against a Dunkelgelger knight when they were both in the royal academy, he's been wearing it ever since.
