Combs Moss | Circular walk from Buxton | Peak District

- Between Buxton and Chapel-en-le-Frith sits the topped hill of Combs Moss. Despite visiting various parts of this moorland in the past such as Castle Naze, I had never done the loop of the whole moss before. This walk did not disappoint! Following the edges I was greeted by some of the most tranquil walking I have ever come across in the Peak. Dwarfed by its more popular neighbours such as Kinder Scout, Combs Moss does not see the same kind of crowds. During my whole walk I only passed 2 people.
The scenery is stunning from start to finish and includes many interesting landmarks along the way. Gritstone edges, Trig Points (Black Edge), WWII craters and even an Iron Age Hill Fort. This walk is not to be missed. I was also lucky enough to do this walk while the heather was in full bloom. For a short time of the year the moors get carpeted in a sea of purple, I was very glad to capture it during this time.
I started and finished the walk from Buxton and the route I took was somewhere between 9-10 miles. See link to my start point down below along with other points of interest.

**Correction - The information I give about the crater is slightly incorrect, this was actually made by a 'V1 rocket which was known for being inaccurate (hence missing Manchester airport by a fair distance) It was not dropped from a plane as I say in the video. Thank you to those that gave me the correct information having watched the video. **

I did Black Edge and Combs Head on The Ethel Challenge. It was a bad day weather wise. After Black Edge, I came back down to the stream as the weather was coming in, but I then went back up through the forest/Wood and up to Combs Head. I think I put some extra miles on doing it that way. Great vlog. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Thom! New subscriber, but loved this walk. We live in Whaley, and a friend and I tried this walk (or a variant of it, we went the opposite way around and started at Lightwood Road) one Autumn a couple of years ago. We got about a third of the way around the boggier side and aborted - turned round and retraced our steps - as our boots were sodden, we were sloshing about in them and in danger of trench foot! I look over the inviting 'scraped flat top' of the moss from my office window, but nobody seems to visit it so great to see it is actually walkable at the right time of year!!

Its a great walk to get up there and do the whole circular. It is certainly a very boggy area around that one side of the moss, when I was up there (mid August) it was already boggy in places, I dread to think what it's like right now. I also bet it would be a stunning walk to do in the snow.

Thank you. Its a great walk, well worth the journey up there. A word of warning is that a lot of the moss can get very boggy after rain. If you are doing it soon I would be prepared for some muddy sections. Enjoy when you do head out for the walk 😊

Thank you 😊 I am certainly no expert but I am getting to know it better all the time. A far more knowable person had told me about some of these points on the walk that I should look out for and the history behind them. That paired with a bit of pre-walk research made for some fun exploring.

@@davidcann6021 I have, its a good walk to do up to the trig. I would say Burbage edge tends to be a bit boggier although the short section of the combs moss walk just after Castle Naze was quite bad.

The reason the Park circles Buxton is simply... it's a town, not a park.
That makes sense 👍 I had always been told that the boundaries of the Park were drawn up that way to allow quarrying in certain areas and had never really questioned it. However I will ask if the boundaries should go around towns why is this not the same case for places like Bakewell?
@@ThomTopics it could be to do with size and population/ houses. The quarrying thing is probably true too. I forgot about that bit.
@@ThomTopics It is the quarries not the tow. Also one of those quarries you can see is Victory Quarry, the place where Englands first Sabre Tooth Tiger was discovered, also a Mastodon.
