  • On the edge of the Peak District, not far from Buxton, lies the old industrial town of New Mills. I set off to explore what the town had to offer under the guidance of Adam. After visiting the popular sites of the Tors Riverside Park and Millennium Walkway, we headed for a walk down the Peak Forest Canal to Whaley Bridge. Expect Bridges, Beers, Bookshops and much more in this fun day out exploring local towns.
    We used the train to get to and from the towns from Buxton (also easily accessible by rail from Manchester and Sheffield). A great day out to be had making the most of public transport to get around the Peak District. Locations and Map links listed below.

    The large helicopter model in the warehouse is a chinook, the chinooks saved the town when the dam wall nearly collapsed.

    The view across the valley from New Mills through Furness Vale and onto Whaley Bridge has been described by many as one of the best on the UK canal network, though the road bypass bridge quickly followed by the worlds biggest branches of Tesco and B&Ms at Bridgemont do briefly spoil things.

    Buxton of course had two stations pre-Beeching, three about a century ago, with the direct trains to London, Derby and Nottingham if you caught the five minute one stop shuttle to Miller's Dale.
    If you wanted to visit Sheffield it was a twelve minute trip on the now freight only line to Chinley where you'd change trains.

    • @ThomTopics
      @ThomTopics  4 місяці тому

      It's a shame we don't have this kind of public transport available to us now in Buxton, being able to hop on a quick train to millers dale would have been great.

    Nope, end of the High Peak canal is about a mile (as the crew flies) to the east at Bugsworth Basin in Buxworth. The last half mile or so you walked were a branch dug to connect the canal with the Cromford and High Peak Railway Whaley Bridge terminus.

      Ah that's good to know 👍 Thank you for the info. When I made this video I wasn't really putting much planing on research into them, more just head for a day out and see what I ended up seeing. I would love to remake some videos around this area in my 'newer' style with ore planning involved and with higher production quality. Thank you for taking the time to watch all the same. Have a great week.

    We LOVE getting the train but haven't been in one for a while. Its good that you could get a direct train, if we wanted to get the train to and from Buxton I think we'd have to go to Manchester or Sheffield first and then back round. New Mills sort of reminded us of the Mill at Cromford but just with a bridge.

    • @ThomTopics
      @ThomTopics  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah its a cool spot and very easy to get to from Buxton luckily. Buxton is a bit of a pain to get to on the train unless you are on the Manchester line already unfortunately. Any time you guys fancy visiting Buxton let me know and I can show you some cool local walking spots.

      You should also check out the Village Kitchen, (just a few yards from The Goyt), on your next visit to Whaley Bridge. Their Full English breakfast is award-winning, and their cakes second to none in the village. They have lots of indoor seating, as well as a deck, and tables in a charming cobbled yard to the rear, beside the river Goyt.
      If you like a secondhand bookshop, next time explore the Transhipment Warehouse fully. At the rear and upstairs there is a huge preloved book CD and DVD shop, run by staff who have loads of local knowledge. Once a month the building (and the whole canal basin) hosts an arts and crafts and food and drink market, where you can pick up some of the beers, ciders and gins that you may have sampled at The Nook and The Goyt.
      There's also a newly-expanded music and books department in the basement of the Blythe House Hospice shop (next to the town hall).
      If it's local history that interests you, pop into Footsteps bookshop and café on Market Street, where you'll find interesting books on the area and chatty local historians gathered under one roof.
      If you wait till the summer, developer Mellor Homes which purchased The Jodrell Arms next to the train station has promised to reopen it then as a pub, so maybe you could pop in and see what kinds of locally-sourced beers they'll have on offer.
      You could also visit the now world famous Toddbrook reservoir too and see how the repairs to the spillway that made international news in 2019 are coming along. You can access it via Reservoir Road (immediately adjacent to the railway station) or through Memorial Park.
