I'm about a minute quicker over 5k in my shoes with carbon rods. They're more excellent training shoes rather than racing shoes, but even so, the difference in speed and feel is glaringly apparent.
@@gtn new idea, if the carbon shoes give an advantage by doing whatever they are doing to the foot mechanics, what foot muscle+tendon training(aside from just running) should be done in order achieve a result in a similar fashion as wearing carbon? @manonrides are doing any foot specific training?
Alright, if the point of this video was to "prove" that carbon plated super shoes can actually make a beginner quite a bit faster, I think it would have been interesting to ask Manon to run a third 5k a week later with the "normal" shoes, to have another control point. Then, it would show if the big time difference between run 1 and run 2 was solely due to the shoes, or if it was also linked to Manon not being sick anymore and starting to run again. I know there are many variables at play, and this is no real scientific experiment by any means :) But it would have been nice to have a little more perspective in that case.

I love and hate this video because I just don't see myself spending that much on a pair of shoes purely for racing but I would love to try it when I'm ready for a PB marathon or 21. Well done Manon!
I bought my first pair of super shoes during the summer of Sub7/Sub8. It was a 30 sec/km instant improvement to my paces over every distance and my recovery times went down. The only downside was I tore my calf after nine months in them.
Incredible! I rave about the Cloudmonsters feeling like they're carrying me along! ....Can't begin to imagine the carbon shoes! 2 minutes off a 5K is insane! More Manon More! Could you take 2 more minutes off with training?!
Good video girls, yes to Manon being back on the show. If she runs again she should start slow and don’t get injured so a 5 or 10 k can be a good goal.
Last year I tested the same 5 x 800m session on track, one week apart, with and without carbon shoes. I made the lead-in to the session over the pre-ceeding days more or less identical with regards to rest & nutrition. The test protocol shows that my average pace over the 5 sets improved from 4:34 pr/km to 4:23 pr km with carbon shoes. Both average and max heart rate was almost identical with 1 BPM lower with carbon shoes. Pretty shoddy science, and with a sample of one it can't even be labelled "bro-science" but since I was the sample it works for me!
Next up: Manon tries breakfast spots, commuting to each spot in her new carbon shoes. Restaurant review = how fast she runs there (eg, how excited she is for the food) . We won’t make her run after bc sometimes that’s just mean.
When Manon said it’s the shoes, sorry all I had in my head was Lee Evan’s saying “it’s the shoooooes!”.😂 If you know, you know…..😂 But good on her for giving it a go.
those two are tremendous. I didn't expect the speed of speedy gonzales but there is a difference between shoes. The most important thing though is that both runs were done in style. xD
I keep looking at carbon shoes but isn't the milage less in carbon than say foam? You train in your trainers and race in your carbon. How much better would you become train I no in your super shoes? The expense is super high. I wonder if a high end mid shoe would be comparable.
It is probably 3x the price of the foam shoes if you look at how long the shoes last. As with top end😮 bicycles, carbon shoes are designed for professionals...
I'm more of a cyclist but I did a fair amount of running last year, even did a half marathon but there is definitely a huge difference between regular training shoes and pro level shoes. My Adidas pro shoes probably shave over a minute off my 5k time. It's basically like having springs on your feet. It is worth the price.
I know these tests arent scientific and I enjoy them regardless. That said, this test needed to be run 4 times, twice in each shoe. Reg shoe, super shoe, reg shoe, super. There is just way too much variability for amateur runners from a fitness and experience perspective, they will almost always go faster the second time you test them.
Great to see Manon doing some crossover from GCN. However, given she was just coming off being sick when she did the first run, I do agree with another commentator that a 3rd run in the normal shoes would give a better idea of how much the carbon shoes might have contributed to the much faster pace. Especially given another video I've seen seemed to say that "super" shoes make little to no difference for mid/lower level runners. And I would love to see Manon go through the process of training for a sprint tri! (Obviously she'd murder the cycling leg!)

They’ve gotten a lot better about that recently, actually. I now run almost exclusively in Ons and don’t remember picking up a stone in any of the shoes I’ve bought in the last 18 months or so. Shoes have also gotten a lot better.
I run Half Marathons. First I used ON Cloumonster ($160). After 15km I used to have pain in my groins, hips and back. After 10 Half Marathons I changed to HOKA Clifton (140$). 60% of pain was gone. Another 15 Half Marathons then I switched to Saucony Endorphin PRO 3 (225$). ALL PAIN IS GONE.
