Do you think carbon shoes would make a difference to your speed? 👟💨
I’d love a free pair to find out! 😂
I got a pair of Trinitrotoluol shoes recently. You can literally feel the energy propelling you forward. They're da bomb.
I use pvc plated shoes and that already made me about 30" faster on a 5k, so yeah I think carbon plates will be even quicker.
I'm about a minute quicker over 5k in my shoes with carbon rods. They're more excellent training shoes rather than racing shoes, but even so, the difference in speed and feel is glaringly apparent.
I just bought Hoka Cielo x1, and I'm now running a lot faster :)
I can promise you no dogs were hurt in the throwing of the slippers 😂
Phew!
Saw/heard that and came to the comments 😮. Go to know all k9s are okay. ✌
LOL 😂
@@gtn new idea, if the carbon shoes give an advantage by doing whatever they are doing to the foot mechanics, what foot muscle+tendon training(aside from just running) should be done in order achieve a result in a similar fashion as wearing carbon? @manonrides are doing any foot specific training?
Amazing run and a great video! Hope to see more of you going forward
Alright, if the point of this video was to "prove" that carbon plated super shoes can actually make a beginner quite a bit faster, I think it would have been interesting to ask Manon to run a third 5k a week later with the "normal" shoes, to have another control point. Then, it would show if the big time difference between run 1 and run 2 was solely due to the shoes, or if it was also linked to Manon not being sick anymore and starting to run again.
I know there are many variables at play, and this is no real scientific experiment by any means :) But it would have been nice to have a little more perspective in that case.
Agreed.
She also had a target to beat from week 1 to week 2 that she would likely have beat with the regular shoes, anyways.
the point of the video was to advertise On footwear
If you look up Mannon’s parkrun she actually ran a faster 5km than her carbon shoes time back in early October.
Yeah but not youtube experiment ever has a good protocol except BikeRadar one time with tires. haha.
"Soley due to" 😂
Half marathon for Manon next stop.
Right! We'd love to see Manon take one on! Where should we sign her up for? 🤔
@@gtndoes the Bristol half marathon still have that massive climb at the end, all the way up to Clifton Downs from the river under Clifton Suspension Bridge...
The last time I did Bristol half marathon was 1993.
I'm scared
@@manonrides The distance is even easier after a nice bike ride. 70.3 when?
Berlin Halfmarathon sounds good. @@gtn
Well done, Manon! She needs to be on the channel more
Exactly! But that would be cheating, she's such a people magnet!
I'm assuming she doesn't want to be. Most cyclist hate running 😀
@@Joshua-dx7zn afaic, i cycle to work and as a means of transportation, but that's it. I'm genuinely scared of speed on the open road. That's not a problem I have when running. I'm no Kipchoge
@@guillaumepoirier3618 So you're not a cyclist then. You just ride a bike. Not sure I know what you mean by speed on the open road. Most cyclist are not going that fast. We are typically going between 15-25mph. I mean I've hit 55mph but that was going down a mountain and it was scary. Most people don't like the cars on the open road. I use a radar to let me know when cars are approaching which helps.
Always great to see Manon on the channel, the two of you together always make great vids
Haha, tossing the slippers in the direction of the dog 😂
Was it just me or an effect or did the dog yelp just after?! 😂
@@iandoddsblah Yes, there was a yelp. Hilarious!!
Not in the direction more like at the dog! 😅
I now realise it was Manon that gave me a cheer of encouragement, on the final loop of a recent Parkrun, as I (strategically 😀) walked a few meters, before ramping up the heart rate, once more. Thanks.
Great! 🙌
Manon seems like a great fit for the channel. I would like to see her participate more. Let's go! (this was really interesting BTW).
Go Manon - love you on GCN love to see you on GTN as well 💕Heather would be an amazing coach !!
I love this two gals… they always have the best attitude. great vid. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
such a great video and colab !! such a good timing too which i was considering getting a pair of Cloudboom ! so that helped ! thx ☀☀
Great video! Would have loved a heart rate comparison between the two runs to be able to tell a difference in effort!
Love this collaboration
GREAT video!!! Fantastic time Manon was it 5k run like my park run??
That is an excellent 5km pace- well done. Interesting to hear Manons HR as well, inspires me to go a little harder
I bought my first pair of super shoes during the summer of Sub7/Sub8. It was a 30 sec/km instant improvement to my paces over every distance and my recovery times went down. The only downside was I tore my calf after nine months in them.
Love it when you two do a challenge very enjoyable
I'm always impressed by these presenters when they 'do something they aren't good at' and are still pretty darned good! Way to go and love the video. :)
Thanks!
Well done, Manon!
I approve those shoes. I have one myself. But they're a bit overkill so I'm just using the cloudswift now because it have less cushion. Love it for my sprint session.😌
Zone 2 cycling... Park Run... Only thing left is a swim! :) Let's go, Manon!
I didn't know that carbon shoes could make that difference! Bring Manon back for other challenges, I love seeing her on the channel!
Good video girls, yes to Manon being back on the show. If she runs again she should start slow and don’t get injured so a 5 or 10 k can be a good goal.
Well done, Mannon ! You´ve got to come back for more 👌
Go Manon - stepping up when needed! A definite shoe-in while Heather is away.
That was great. It would be good to see more of Manon on the channel, a 10k next maybe?
I'm not a fast runner, but my Hoka CarbonX have made a HUGE difference in keeping my achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in check. I think I'll never go back to regular running shoes.
I run with Novablast 3, Clifton 9, and Trabuco Max 2`s… Usually my calves start to burn early until it starts to settle mid run, but today ran in Saucony Speed 4`s and the burn was gone completely… But there`s still gravel/sand on the roads because of winter, so after a kick my foot slipped more every time i pushed forward. Gonna have to wait till they wash the streets to feel those plated shoes more
I have the CarbonX and they are useless in terms of energy return and they have 0 cushioning, I run the same pace with any daily trainer.
Well done 👏 just wondering if manon hit the dog when she threw the slippers as I heard a little yelp 🙈🤣
those two are tremendous. I didn't expect the speed of speedy gonzales but there is a difference between shoes. The most important thing though is that both runs were done in style. xD
I will always vote to see more of Manon, she is a great human being.
I thought Manon was only doing Zone 2? Maybe this was filmed before that endeavor?
Just before 👌
2 minute improvement? Awesome effort Manon.
More Manon is always good
“Well done Manon thank you for doing this” and Heather burst out laughing. Hilarious!!!!
Incredible! I rave about the Cloudmonsters feeling like they're carrying me along! ....Can't begin to imagine the carbon shoes! 2 minutes off a 5K is insane! More Manon More! Could you take 2 more minutes off with training?!
Great video! thanks
Would love to see a series on her training for a marathon. The ups and downs and the like.
Well done Manon. Yes set the prize and hook Manon into a stand in for the short term. "Hey Manon, you got a beautiful pair of shoes"
I love and hate this video because I just don't see myself spending that much on a pair of shoes purely for racing but I would love to try it when I'm ready for a PB marathon or 21. Well done Manon!
So cool! And congrats to the 22min time! That is great!
Yes, of course we want more Manon!
Great to have Manon back 👍 What can we have her do next? No point messing about, sign her up for an Ironman 😉😁
Last year I tested the same 5 x 800m session on track, one week apart, with and without carbon shoes. I made the lead-in to the session over the pre-ceeding days more or less identical with regards to rest & nutrition.
The test protocol shows that my average pace over the 5 sets improved from 4:34 pr/km to 4:23 pr km with carbon shoes. Both average and max heart rate was almost identical with 1 BPM lower with carbon shoes. Pretty shoddy science, and with a sample of one it can't even be labelled "bro-science" but since I was the sample it works for me!
Manon and Heather is the best collab since sliced bread!!!!
It would be interesting to see the time gain over the 10km distance. I was surprised the time difference was so large over just 5km. Way to go Maonon!
The term comfortable as per Manon running is not a term I think she would use. Much respect of giving it a go.
Interested in seeing Manon training schedule then moving forward 👍🏻
Manon, Sprint Tri?
You've got us thinking 🤔
I Hope that no dogs were harmed in the making of the video 💁
I'm more of a cyclist but I did a fair amount of running last year, even did a half marathon but there is definitely a huge difference between regular training shoes and pro level shoes. My Adidas pro shoes probably shave over a minute off my 5k time. It's basically like having springs on your feet. It is worth the price.
So should there be a different division for the "super shoes"? Seems that unless you can afford the Ferrari of shoes, you are at a distinct disadvantage. How much is attributed to the runner, and how much to the shoes?
Well done!
Jesus that an great decrease in time. Well done Manon!
22:49 5k at no training and just fitness from cycling is really really good
Lol, Manon is the novice runner. The badass from GCN is the "novice runner." :D
I wonder if Manon developed some knee pain after running. She is always riding a bike, but not running. I developed knee pain after suddenly running for my first triathlon years ago. My biking knees could not handle impact force from running. My knees are stronger now because I regularly run and bike nowadays.
Sprint triathlon Manon 😎
Manon should come over to the States, and do the Chattanooga 70.3 with me next month.
Next up: Manon tries breakfast spots, commuting to each spot in her new carbon shoes. Restaurant review = how fast she runs there (eg, how excited she is for the food) . We won’t make her run after bc sometimes that’s just mean.
I like at the park run everyone was checking there watches 😂
Talking methodologically there may well have been some control bias in the way you set up the "test". Wouldn't it have been better to blind test the shoes. Ie cover them up so that Manon didn't know the shoes she was actually running in?
zone 2 run training to coincide with her cycling z2? :D
There's a bias, performance improved because of the effect of the first 5k on fitness and control of the potential on the distance. I would have use the classical shoes on the second run.
Interesting! But why is the video so blurred sometimes?
Wow Manon hitting her dog with her slippers 😂😂😂 dog cried
Noted that too! Poor pup
I keep looking at carbon shoes but isn't the milage less in carbon than say foam? You train in your trainers and race in your carbon. How much better would you become train I no in your super shoes? The expense is super high. I wonder if a high end mid shoe would be comparable.
It is probably 3x the price of the foam shoes if you look at how long the shoes last. As with top end😮 bicycles, carbon shoes are designed for professionals...
She's been on the channel before, right?
Quite like her. Also quite like the idea of pros training noobs
Could be really run for each of the main cast to take a total noob under their wing, train for X months, then have the noobs compete
Run Manon run!
Well done Manon 👏 You should train for a 10k next.
Ironman Wales is in 6 months… that give enough time for a nice structure training program for Manon
I think with some structured training Manon. On could do sub 20 minutes.
I would like to see Manon do a sprint triathlon.
Not a pro here but I am ?Gobsmacked? How much of a difference zone 2 training has done in the last few weeks. I did a first 13,40km then a 7km the next day and am getting faster and better in strides. It’s really made the runs much more enjoyable. I run in the on cloud monsters.
I'd love to see this done with someone who runs +- 30min per 5k. Food for thought for us average runners.
I run Half Marathons.
First I used ON Cloumonster ($160). After 15km I used to have pain in my groins, hips and back.
After 10 Half Marathons I changed to HOKA Clifton (140$). 60% of pain was gone.
Another 15 Half Marathons then I switched to Saucony Endorphin PRO 3 (225$). ALL PAIN IS GONE.
Yes being her on again 🎉 Heather you will be missed! 😢
Next up, Manon takes on the Leadville100!
Wow!
Is this overlapping with Manon's bicycling zone 2 experiment?
Would have been a better experiment if she didn’t know which was the control shoe and also if she wasn’t primed that she would be running faster with the other shoes. Especially since a large part of running is mental
I'm a bit more worried about the dog rather than the result 😂
I want to know how many little stones Manon picked up in the first pair of shoes. Every time I run in Ons I get a little collection of stones
They’ve gotten a lot better about that recently, actually. I now run almost exclusively in Ons and don’t remember picking up a stone in any of the shoes I’ve bought in the last 18 months or so. Shoes have also gotten a lot better.
You can’t replace Heather, but great maternity cover on channel with Manon
she is doing stage 2 training for GCN! dont mess up the experiment!
Don't worry this was filmed before I started zone 2 training
Manon is ready for Paris with Carbon shoe
Do the Triathlon Manon 😊
I know these tests arent scientific and I enjoy them regardless. That said, this test needed to be run 4 times, twice in each shoe. Reg shoe, super shoe, reg shoe, super. There is just way too much variability for amateur runners from a fitness and experience perspective, they will almost always go faster the second time you test them.
New shoes on a table!!!!
When Manon said it’s the shoes, sorry all I had in my head was Lee Evan’s saying “it’s the shoooooes!”.😂
If you know, you know…..😂
But good on her for giving it a go.
Wait, please correct me if I'm wrong, she ran 24mins and 22mins for a 5k park run and she's supposed to be an amateur/novice runner? 😅 My pb is 29:08 for my 5k and I have been running 3x a week since June last year, carefully following my zone 2 and 80/20 runs. 🤣 That makes me lower than an amateur.🤣
"I run a bit"... goes on to smash my 5k time 😂
Just keep working on it, you will get better, maybe a year from now if you run every week 3,2,6,2,2,7,break, Miles per week give or take, keep in zone 2 heart range on slow runs, and long runs keep zone 3-4. Get at Strava log in 100-200 per month.
More Malon!!
What about Manon try a triathlon or a duathlon event?
I click the video because i saw Manon 😁
Great to see Manon doing some crossover from GCN. However, given she was just coming off being sick when she did the first run, I do agree with another commentator that a 3rd run in the normal shoes would give a better idea of how much the carbon shoes might have contributed to the much faster pace. Especially given another video I've seen seemed to say that "super" shoes make little to no difference for mid/lower level runners. And I would love to see Manon go through the process of training for a sprint tri! (Obviously she'd murder the cycling leg!)
Wow major difference.. wonder if some is placebo and she wasn’t feeling 100% before.. I’m from GCN channel and a cyclist but interesting.. Pete 🚴🏻👍
Music is bit epic for a park run. Is there a dinosaur shes running from off camera?
A “bad” 5k in just 24mins is definitely not novice in my book.
Not really a good test. 5K and 10K is too short for a benefit on the energy returns. Weight of the shoes is more important in these races. In addition, the boost comes from the front rocker of these race shoes and the feeling of having faster shoes. A better test would've been a Marathon with relative perceived exertion and difference in power (e.g. 3:45 Marathon with 3.25W/kg -> 3:40 Marathon 3.30W/kg = 1.5% improvment)
The Cloudstratus weigh 250g and the Cloudboom 188g. Nike Streakfly with 185g would give you the same effect for half the price at the 5K, on sale even for half the price of the Cloudstratus.
