Confession time, when Sarah talked about the laces on the Hoka Cielo and said "temped to swap the laces out for something a little less stiff and more floppy but that's my personal preference" It tickled my inner child mode and I giggled and I'm still giggling now. don't aks me why its just been one of them days. 🤣
Just ran my first half marathon yesterday and watched your videos all during my training. Thank you guys for all of your informative and inspirational videos!!!! You guys rock!
There are so many carbon plated shoes these days, you could probably do a whole marathon just testing over 1 km. It is really hard to tell the difference and appreciate you being able to test these in a video. Surprised that none of the other premier brands like Nike, Puma and ASICS were included in this round?
I have been loving my current combination of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 and the Pro 4. The Speed has been a good shoe for faster training runs and the Pro has really worked well for me in 10k and half marathon races. I'm probably going to run a marathon in the Pro later this year. I feel i'm still a too slow runner for the Elite but might have to give it (or the Elite 2) a go one of these days
I relate to Tom. He has my size and weight, although im tad faster than him and Sarah. Most UA-cam running testers are really athletic which is lovely for them, but difficult to relate to. When it comes to shoes i am somewhere between 2e and 4e width. Most of the athletic UA-camrs seem to have narrow feet.
people focusing on speed but never about how much fun you get when you use it for a tough workout, long run to get used them before a race and overall get bouncy sensations.
Sarah an average runner?!? Nope not anymore!!! 3:30-45 marathon, soon to be sub-20min 5km. Maybe she was, but now she is the champion of amateur runners. Would love to see a stand-in for Anna (though she is an Ultra beast) whilst she is away. Some1 to keep Tom on his toes at the 5-6min/km pace. Sarah has clearly reached Beast Mode and is only going forwards!! 🎉
I’ve had a pair of the Adidas shoes for quite a while and I rarely run in anything else because they do everything well. I’m not a fast runner, but even on my slowest recovery runs they’re still comfortable. I’ve never thought of them as being at all unstable and have run on various surfaces in them without issue. I have no idea if they make me faster or not, they just feel great. Mine have done hundreds of km’s now and they still look and feel as good as new
Best shoes I've ever bought, 5k to marathon and even 50km trail run😂. They are not good on trails, but they just work so well for me, I don't get injured and i just seem to have a better run when i wear them. However, I remember putting them on for the first time and thinking they were unstable in corners. Clearly not the case anymore.
Fwiw I ran a 50km trail run in the adizero pro 3. They are not good on the more gnarly stuff - wet muddy path or proper rock paths, but for gravel roads, fire roads etc they work for me. They just seem to be the perfect shoe for me in nearly all occasions. They are not that unstable when you get used to them.
Is this Tom's promotion? Love this type of video TRC. My rotation is mainly ASICS with a little bit of Saucony. Having watched the other comparison I get the feeling the Metaspeed Sky Paris still edges the win overall given that is was Andy's 5K shoe.
And that fun video of Anna and her mum with supershoes. That was interesting, really tempted to try some now although as always have run in slight support shoes probably not a good idea... but maybe I could still try....
I reckon I get about a minute back on a 5km and maybe two and a half minutes on a 10km (comparable effort and HR) carbon vs normal. I'm sitting around 27 mins for 5km and 58 mins for 10km though, so I guess your mileage may vary... (well not mileage, but time!) The carbons definitely seem to help with reduced impact and recovery though (at ~105kg I can feel the plate through the foam if I'm not light enough on my feet).
I just tried Altra Vanish Carbon 2 yesterday. Those are my first super shoes. That run yesterday made me believe that 90min half marathon is actually possible. Would like to see how those compare to other carbon plate shoes as those are the only ones with wide toe-box which is a must for me.
Maybe not a super shoe, but the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 is my go-to fave for any run, short or long, and I've recently acquired the Pro 3 (definitely a super shoe) for less than $150 USD and am absolutely loving them so far, even though the insole gets pretty squeaky when soaked in sweat (it's REALLY hot here). They feel so comfortable for me that I'm not tempted to shop around, though your comments about the Cielo have intrigued me.
I went for Adios Pro 3s and love them. I bought them for marathon races, hitting significant PBs over the past 12 months. Partly down to along period of consistent training. Whilst I do feel they make me faster, I feel the big benefit has been that my legs feel much much less fatigued at the end. Like others have said, I'd like to see some feedback over longer distances as I'm sure some will be better suited for 5ks and others marathons. It can't be back to back comparisons like here, but maybe you could share shoes across a range of runners rather than multiple runs by 1 or 2 runners.
I’d been interested in more info about the durability of these shoes. Super shoes are generally not known for their long life anyway, but will some of these last longer than others?
I have the previous generation of the Kiprun and at 380 Km they are still in pretty good shape. I only use them on the running track and some key races.
Decathlon has said they aim for all their shoes to last at least 1000k and that includes these. A lot of other reviewers have speculated that is the reason they use a stiffer foam compared to other brands.
Most supershoes are not available in a wide fitting. I now use the Saucony Kinvara Pro because it was the only carbon-plated everyday trainer available in a wide fitting. $179. I've been achieving good times for the 5K and 10K at age 72. Now training for a half marathon and rotating between two pairs of these and a Saucony Shift 3 for recovery runs.
Ive been lucky enough to have access to very deep discounts on shoes recently and have a bunch to choose from: - Nike Vaporfly 3 - Adidas Adios Pro 3 - NB SC Elite v3 - Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris I pick a different shoe for different occasions but agree every one of these is good for 10-15s/km over an everyday runner like a Pegasus or 1080. I don't think a 1k time trial is the best test of the shoes however - you need a good lengthy tempo block within a long run to test a potential marathon shoe: 30k with 15k at race pace? How about a back-to-back comparison of a few of these Sarah!!! :) I do love my Adios 3 as a long run shoe - and of all my super-shoes its probably the most durable. Great video though - good to show that these shoes do help non-elites in the middle of the pack as well as the speedy front of the pack!
Just bought the newly released Mizuno Neo Vista and wow. I'm a Hoka tragic but, these are proving to be awesome-ly comfortable and with a great energy return. Would love to see/hear others opinions.
Just got myself some Gel Kayano 31 and Sarah is right the pull tab is fantastic who knew! As for carbon plate I am torn between the NB Fuelcell, ASICS Metaspeed Paris or the Kiprun (I have stopped into many different Decathlons and there are never any in stock)
I have not found that they make a slow runner like myself consistently any faster, I splurged and bought Saucony endorphin pro 3s this year. While I do notice I can put down some faster paces in them, I still have days when it doesn't seem to make any difference. I like them a lot, but at the price point, I'm yet to be convinced on the benefits for most of us average runners to spend that much. But if you have the cash, why not 😊
It would be cool to see a full slate of these shoes up against each other featuring the whole team, each in a different pair of shoes-you could race a baseline 10K in everyday trainers, then come back a few days later and all run a 10K each in a different pair of carbon plated shoes-then compare the time improvement by percentage, which would account for the differences in each runner.
I often analyse my running data after training and carbon plated shoes definitely make a difference... but only if I'm running over a certain pace. My heart rate is lower when I wear them which is probably why when I first used them I was surprised by how quick my pace was compared to my perceived pace from body feel.
Appreciate the video... Coming up to our 4th Loch Ness Marathon before 3rd London next April. Currently I run in Brooks GTS 21s because of flat feet and pronation though I do love my New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v3 LDN24 shoes that I treated myself too at the running village this year (I liked the colours :-) ) for shorter training runs. Cannot decide whether to take a punt on carbon plated/rodded shoes for the next marathon or not... An expensive experiment if you don't get on with them, though those Kipruns seem intriguing and quite a bit more affordable.
I did the math on my new threshold pace estimate my garmin gave me when i ran in my Endorphin Pro 4s it was 2% faster than my well worn Wave Rider 26s i've been training in up to that point.
I got a pair a few months back and love them. Much better than the current Vaporflys for me, and a couple of other carbon plated shoes I've tried and struggled with
Personally I will likely stick with Altras simply for the wide toebox. Unfortunately the new Carbon ones aren't apparently very good. I've also noticed that different shaped shoes benefit from different ways to tie them
You work for the perfect company, imagine all the free shoes 😊😊😊 if I worked there I'd be like: "Ah I got a video idea, the most expensive shoe vs cheapest shoe 👀👀"
I borrowed some Vaporfly's to see what the 'carbon plated shoe' fuss was all about (as I assumed it was a vanity purchase for hobby runners like me), and I was most surprised by how comfortable they were. I had heard that they were a bit rubbish for your feet, but I did actually really like them to run in. I am not convinced that they were massively faster than my other road shoes (New Balance Rebel v4's, which replaced some v2's), but I suspect that they may be easier to live with over a marathon distance, and that you might perhaps feel a bit less smashed up at the finish. Also I think it depends on your foot strike. I run trail ultras, and am quite a neutral mid-foot striker, but I think if you were on your toes the whole time you would probably notice more of a difference - they were fun going up 10% hills, but I really had to lean forwards on flatter ground to get anywhere.
Sorry but 1k isn't enough, these are meant to be, IMO, long distance shoes that reduce fatigue over 10k+ distances. I'd love to see a comparison like that but I know that's hard to do!
@Beans-hp8bl I'm not sure they're going to fire out a load of half marathons, just for a tiny bit of not particularly scientific or useful data!!! I think this video does more than enough. It shows that the shoes are faster, and it shows that every shoe and every runner is different, and therefore their reviews, opinions and times are not meant to be taken as an objective certainty.
@@Mattslilchannelthat’s a big test though and probably will take some time considering you probably want to have a similar level of exhaustion at the start of the run. 1 k you can do quite a few in a day and have sufficient rest inbetween the runs. And probably your daily performance will have quite some impact on the results too
Super-shoes are great and all. But when I see the differences here, and then I look at the recent world records by (for example) Faith Kipyegon and Jess Hull, it prompts me to ask "Are they actually running better than the previous WR holders, or is just it all in the shoes?".
I love TRC content so much, but hard not to eye roll a bit on videos like this where the sponsored brands perform well. I get it, but would add so much more credibility to the content if these tests were actually objective and not sponsored by brands. Would love a neutral, subscription version of content like this, that you could actually trust. Bills won't pay themselves though I guess....
The one they had the other week comparing watches and the garmin (who they clearly seem to be sponsored by) came out on top was not a surprise at all 😂 but it also fits with my experience so... perhaps it was objective.
I've never worn a carbon plated shoe, the only plated shoe I have worn is the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 which I ran Brighton marathon in 3:24 in.. but maybe I'll splash out if I run another marathon
Great video, would you consider throwing vaporflys in the mix, they’re currently my super shoe and it would be interesting to see them against the others?
It would be interesting to do this video but ….with a target pace and monitor heart rate to see which was most efficient but keep them hidden and see which the runners preferred based on their perceived effort
Been running since 1978. I have no idea how many shoes I've bought. I hate buying new shoes. I buy in bulk when I find a shoe I like and that keeps my feet comfortable. The only thing I'm worried about is when the damn shoe mfr. stops making my comfy durable shoe. Then I have to go through the whole "find a new shoe I like" process and hope they make it for a long time. P.S.And yes, I bought the 1st version of Nike waffle stompers in blue and yellow.
Great podcast thx. How do we contact you with podcast suggestions/ questions? I’d love your in-depth take on barefoot running shoes for Mara and ultra distances 🙏
Doesn't the foam make a bigger difference that the plate? What was the base shoe you used (or if you can't say- was it a traditional midsole with EVA foam instead of the supershoe PEBA foam?)
I feel like I really like those Kipruns (to be they're the most normal looking shoes among the peers) but where I live now there's like couple of races a season (unless you're ready to do a lot of travelling) and I can't really justify the purchase for myself. My last 10K race I did in my daily trainers Saucony Ride 15 and it felt very ok... or just familiar. Probably will wait for some end-of-season discounts and treat myself after all. In general I do feel like these days there are not so many daily trainer shoes that on top of other things are actually built to last (if I knew the trend would shift in this direction, I'd have bought a lifetime supply of Mizuno Wave Rider 20s a few years back) and that's super disappointing.
Im an average runner and just bought some super shoes for a half marathon. I managed a PB but that was probably more to do with training. On a side note I can hardly walk now and lost 2 toe nails on my right foot !! Yolo
I'm a long time brooks runner and i'm kind of amazed how badly they have done with their carbon plate shoes. None of them have been well received despite them developing many versions over many years.
I wouldn't use any of those 4, I've got Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris, Hoka Rocket X2 and Nike Alphafly V.3 for my super shoes, backed up with original Metaspeed Sky, Nike Vaporfly V.2 and V.3 and two pairs of Alphafly V.1
I have the Hoka Rocket X2 and love them for anything up to half marathon distance, but am considering either the Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris or Nike Alphafly 3 for my next pair of race shoes. How do they compare and when would you use one over the other?
@@davidtaylor3 I’d say the ASICS are even faster than the Hoka for up to half but Hoka feel like they are a bit softer. Alphafly 3 for half and upwards, just a brilliant fast cruising shoe
@@TheHutchRuns thanks for the response. I’m probably leaning towards the ASICS for the type of running I do. I also have the ASICS Superblasts for daily running, so I imagine the Metaspeed Sky Paris would be similar but faster.
I want to see a test on how they affect recovery! Maybe someone could run a marathon with one normal shoe on one foot and one supershoe on the other and see how each leg feels after 😂 (Probably James, he seems like he'd be up for the challenge)
I don't think they make any difference to anyone other than an elite athletes who measures their success in seconds. It's just marketing for people who are happy to part with their hard-earned when they don't need to. I get a 19:15 5K with £39 Aasics.
Loved this but not sure someone who can reach 3:20/km is an average runner! Echoing comments below on calls for an actual average runner b/c I'm starting to feel EXTREMELY below average 😂(That said, well done on the amazing progress Sarah!)
And marketed for hobby runners who are willing to open the wallet widely. And even for elite runners I don't see much benefit. The current 10000m WR is lousy 6 seconds faster than 20 (!!) years ago.
I have the same three except I add one other brand, ASICS. Here is my rotation: Brooks Glycerin 20: Max Cushion mileage shoe Nike Vaporfly 3 - race shoe ASICS Novablast 3- tempo Saucony Endorphin Speed 3- intervals ( mile repeats and 800 repeats)
I don't understand why if Sarah did her fastest km in the Kipruns why would she use the Adidas shoes for a 5k race? Just use the fastest shoe surely???
Probably an unpopular opinion amongst this community but do people not see this as a disingenuous way to run and/ or compete? With, let’s be real, artificial spring and additional assistance from a shoe? I understand that any advantage to be gained (legally) in competition may as well be taken, but this isn’t truly the runner or athlete achieving the time, it’s with the help of a shoe. If they couldn’t do it with a lesser (or dare I say, minimalist) shoe, then why does it count? This isn’t intended to accuse or inflame, rather incite discussion, and I’m happy to remain open-minded.
Surprise surprise you like the Kiprun shoes, don't suppose you are sponsored by Decathlon or anything... Every other running review channel slated the Kiprun shoes...
That is a grands worth of shoes you are suggesting people buy. Hopefully test shoes you are given are passed onto underprivileged/community groups rather than just kicking around the office?
Confession time, when Sarah talked about the laces on the Hoka Cielo and said "temped to swap the laces out for something a little less stiff and more floppy but that's my personal preference" It tickled my inner child mode and I giggled and I'm still giggling now. don't aks me why its just been one of them days. 🤣

Super-shoes are great and all. But when I see the differences here, and then I look at the recent world records by (for example) Faith Kipyegon and Jess Hull, it prompts me to ask "Are they actually running better than the previous WR holders, or is just it all in the shoes?".
The shoes might help little, but really only little.
It's always a big laugh when hobby runners expect to lower their 10k PR by 1 minute or more.
Ever done reviews for stability shoes? I use ASICS Kayano.
I don't know if they are sponsored by any of these brands? I remember they have had puma and mizuno products before.
3:14 Sarah's right foot appears neutral while her left foot pronates
good spot!
It's called. Going beast mode
Welcome to human feet.
Maybe. We all have some asymmetry, I guess. Duck feet for me (whack whack).
It would be interesting to do this video but ….with a target pace and monitor heart rate to see which was most efficient but keep them hidden and see which the runners preferred based on their perceived effort
Big fan of Tom. Very relateable
Hello, nice videos, should Tom do some seperate videos for runner above average weight like myself, i think shoes would respond differently
Great podcast thx. How do we contact you with podcast suggestions/ questions?
I’d love your in-depth take on barefoot running shoes for Mara and ultra distances 🙏
Doesn't the foam make a bigger difference that the plate? What was the base shoe you used (or if you can't say- was it a traditional midsole with EVA foam instead of the supershoe PEBA foam?)
the kiprun's look sharp. I'd be in the market for a pair for the short 5 and 10ks. gotta go abroad to get 'em tho
I stick with ASICS gel kayano, love them! I am from Australia 😊
Throw Altras in there. Some wide toebox zero dropish shoes. Altra has their carbon shoe too that you can try :)
How much time do you have between each of these all out ks? Wouldnt doing this back to back influence the later reps?
Im an average runner and just bought some super shoes for a half marathon. I managed a PB but that was probably more to do with training. On a side note I can hardly walk now and lost 2 toe nails on my right foot !! Yolo
Dream team!
big boy is an inspiration
Idk if I’ve seen Tom before, but I F with Tom 👍🏻
Also Tom is a speedster in my heart
I want to see a test on how they affect recovery! Maybe someone could run a marathon with one normal shoe on one foot and one supershoe on the other and see how each leg feels after 😂 (Probably James, he seems like he'd be up for the challenge)
Hahaha (this is James) I would totally be up for that if they were the same ish shoe otherwise I would end up walking with a limp for weeks 🤣
@@runningchannel Weeks of limping for a lifetime of knowledge 😅 (PS I'm also a James)
What happens to the shoes after you do these tests? Do they get donated?
I don't think they make any difference to anyone other than an elite athletes who measures their success in seconds. It's just marketing for people who are happy to part with their hard-earned when they don't need to. I get a 19:15 5K with £39 Aasics.
are they worth the price though?
Loved this but not sure someone who can reach 3:20/km is an average runner! Echoing comments below on calls for an actual average runner b/c I'm starting to feel EXTREMELY below average 😂(That said, well done on the amazing progress Sarah!)
It's placeabo effect. Super shoes are designed for the elites.
And marketed for hobby runners who are willing to open the wallet widely.
And even for elite runners I don't see much benefit. The current 10000m WR is lousy 6 seconds faster than 20 (!!) years ago.
Why you didn't test nike puma and asics super shoes
We have tested them before!
I've got multiple manufacturers in my rotation. Saucony, Brooks, Nike for the most part.
Interesting! Which shoes from those brands?
I have the same three except I add one other brand, ASICS. Here is my rotation:
Brooks Glycerin 20: Max Cushion mileage shoe
Nike Vaporfly 3 - race shoe
ASICS Novablast 3- tempo
Saucony Endorphin Speed 3- intervals ( mile repeats and 800 repeats)
I don't understand why if Sarah did her fastest km in the Kipruns why would she use the Adidas shoes for a 5k race? Just use the fastest shoe surely???
"average runners like ourselves" 0:16
Alphafly all day
Test the new Nikes please. Same format, average normal runners (not Andy the Olympian) in super shoes.
I still run in cheap classic shoes.
The difficulty with hearing you guys speak positively about the Kiprun is slightly tempered by knowing they’ve recently sponsored you
E) none of the above
Omg I couldn't stop reading it as super hero's not shoes 🤦♀️😂
None of them..too much stack..i prefer the little brother of the Pro 3..the Takumi Sen
Fortunately, i cant afford these expensive shoes so dont have these issues😂
New kiprun defnitely a monster in shorter distance.
For me, kiprun is for 5km.
Even 10km felt hurt
I run wearing sandals ☺
Do you buy these shoes from sportshoes and send them back after the video?
huh?
@@runningchannel what happens with the shoes after the video? You return them or keep them?
Hi
👋
hey!
That is a grands worth of shoes you are suggesting people buy. Hopefully test shoes you are given are passed onto underprivileged/community groups rather than just kicking around the office?
Barefoot is best. Less is more. Naturally strong.
