      @@BeneathVultures I did, at least I tried the red one. I have never seen the black one you have, or even knew it existed (I now see in another video you did that yourself), but it seems pretty much the same exact thing as the red one. As for the OG Strike Pro, the biggest difference, from what I remember, is the hi hat, I hated that 2 cymbal set up that it featured, I thought it was stupid, and didn't work very well. I mean I get the point, to make it more realistic, but no. The bass drum functioned okay, it picked up all the notes at least, but compared to the SE full size one, it doesn't compare. The full size one actually feels like a real bass drum, not like you're just smacking a pad. The feel of all the other drums are pretty much the same. The rack and mounts are better with the SE, the original one,especially the floor toms, they started sagging too much. I actually switched it around and gave it three rack toms and just one floor, and it seemed to work better that way. The cymbals feel was pretty much the same too, but I think the SE ones are a little upgraded, or at least the ride. As for the module, I don't remember too much. I remember it was very similar in terms of setup, but not sure about functions. But overall, it feels, looks, and functions a lot better than the OG Strike Pro.

      @@BeneathVultures I forgot to mention one of my favorite differences, the cymbal placement. The original Strike Pro you were stuck with all the cymbals coming off the posts, this made some awkward spots, or just unfavorable, but the SE version, you can put the cymbals anywhere, making it a lot easier to play.

      @@IJustFiguredThisOut I actually have the red one, but I just reskinned it. Chad, thanks for this video! I have an old Roland TD10 that still works fine, but in so many ways it's just ancient. I've been researching the Alesis Strike Pro and I'm intrigued but worried...mostly about the hi hats. I've read MANY reviews that claim the hi hats are abysmal. I went to a local store on Friday to play the Alesis kit and the hi hats worked either wide open or totally closed--nothing in between. I didn't like that. The next day I went to another store to play their Alesis kit just to check out the hi hats...and it turned out they have a Roland hi hat connected to the Alesis kit. Interestingly, it did the exact same thing: worked wide open or completely closed. I'm totally torn on this kit. The price point is good, but what's the point if a key component is faulty?

  • @johntagliabue
    @johntagliabue 3 роки тому +1

    Thanks for talking about bassdrum feel, almost no one does! That's one of the weakest points in every e-drum/Hybrid-drum, also on the top price range. E-drums makers seem not to understand that a real bassdrum absorbs or slightly bounces the strokes, while a mesh-head bassdrum bounces the strokes back! It's not just a matter of feel...When you are used to the "dead" response of an acoustic bassdrum and switch to the mesh-head, there's a risk of injuring yourself if you keep delivering the strokes with the same amount of energy. It dramatically affects the technique, since "momentum" and "body-balance" totally change! The only accurate kick pads I found out were the old "Yamaha DTX". Those were maybe too "dead", but safe and trainy at least!

    • @BeneathVultures
      @BeneathVultures  3 роки тому +1

      You nailed it. Constantly fighting the bounce to the point where the beater doesn't follow a predictable momentum, which results in unwanted ghost notes and wore down legs. It's bad enough that I've considered swapping to a real triggered bass drum, but right now I just don't play enough to justify the investment and headache. Anyway, happy Friday!

      Yeah man, absolutely. The pads produce a little more low frequency tones than something like rubber pads, so you'll never really have truly "quiet" practice. Still, they will still be massively quieter than your Gretsch kit. The only quibble is with the Hi hats and kick drum It's purely a waste of time with the factory hats and kick.. I use an old PD7 Roland foot pedal and the 11 series hat which is stationary Totally not necessary to have the open close effect on the hats with electric drums or crowding your space with the stand... I get amazing actuation as good as acoustic if not better end of problem also stop wasting your time with the double dribble effect on the trampoline style kick drum set up Get yourself a Roland KD kick drum converter mount it on an acoustic drum and you will have a solid kick and no more double dribble or bouncy feel at the foot.

    One of the most under-rated features of this kit is the direct outs... If you play it live like I do, having the direct outs is the best way to ensure a good, full drum sound. Short of the Roland 50, I don't think anything else on the market even offers this.

    • @graantmnz

      oh yes there is - I use yamaha - and they have direct outs ...Roland are overpriced and have nothing over yamaha ...

    • @landonp629
      @landonp629 5 років тому +1

      As far as I can tell, the cheapest Yamaha module to do all direct-outs is the DTX700 which comes on the DTX760K set, which runs $3,500. So for the sake of my argument, it's the same thing... Very little below the price-point of a Rolan TD50 (ot maybe TD30???) or Yamaha DTX700 offers direct output options. you can nab an Alesis Strike kit for $1,600 that has this, and I like the looks a lot better than either Roland or Yamaha - which have a traditional 'electronic drum kit' look - which I dislike.
      Yamaha as a brand is fine I'm sure, but I'd never invest in a full set - just like I'd never invest in a full Roland set - I simply dislike the looks, and would rather spend the money on a seperate module + triggers for an acoustic conversion; of course that is just my person preference - some may like the looks of traditional edrums... I don't.
      PS) One issue I have with Yamaha is their closed ecosystem. Most of the Yamaha stuff does not work with third party modules, so it makes it hard to ever move away from Yamaha if yopu invest in one of their kits. Say what you will about Rolan or Alesis, at the least the modules are pretty much universal across all triggers, hi-hats, ride cymbals, etc.

    Unless I missed it, my biggest gripe is the cheap plastic piece that the cymbals sit on. Im a hard hitter and right away I found that all the plastic pieces for all the crashes don't stay in place. They spin/turn causing the strike zone not to be where you want the cymbal to be. And tightening them just stripped them out. I had to position them where I wanted them and drill a small hole through the plastic piece and metal and put a screw through it to hold the position.... works great, but what the hell? I'm also starting to have issue with the snare being less sensitive/responsive in a short amount of time. Opened up snare and nothing looks damaged or broken. I'll try tweaking it with the module but....shouldn't have happened. With all said, I did get a good price. Start with one baseline kit and just bounce back and forth to get the same pad on the 2nd kit similar to the first, and then just rinse and repeat for each pad and each kit. It has been exactly a week since owning the Strike Pro kit, and so far I agree with the kick pad. I noticed that it really is far too bouncy to play how I have been used to playing coming from an 8 year DM10 kit owner. I can happily say that I am very much content with how the rest of the drum pads feel compared to the hard DM10 pads(after 8 year use they looked like a car with serious hail damage).
    I haven't sat down with it enough to start customizing my own kits on the Strike module just yet, but I am no advanced drummer either. I just play casually, mostly just playing by ear to songs having learned drumming from a video game(Rock Band). Thus another reason I have kept buying e-kits to play RB4 with as well.
    So for me, it is perfect for my usage and 10 times better than the DM10 I had before. Especially speaking about the hi-hat controller issues I had on the DM10, it seems as though I got the newer version of the Strike kit and I have not had any issues that I have noticed on the Strike just yet. Just the fact that I get to finally stop letting that hi-hat stand collect dust(originally was using it with the Gen-z Zildjian cymbals) and using it for this kit is exciting and has me feeling like I am playing on an acoustic. It just excites me that I get realistic drum sizes and the mesh heads. Impressed at how far along Alesis has come and I love that the cymbals have dual-zone more realistic hitting, and love the 3 zone ride cymbal.

Then there's the consideration of single vs dual triggers (the Strike uses dual triggers). If you ever get it up and running, let me know how it goes. 🤘

      It's way closer to acoustic than rubber pads or small mesh pads, but it's a 2-ply mesh head so there's still that damn bounce. I haven't played an acoustic kit in quite a while, so I'm used to it at this point, but definitely not perfect. Sorry, missed this comment. Well, I use Superior Drummer and I know they're not identical, but they're made by the same company. SD let's you just quickly choose a drum/trigger and remap it right from the graphical screen. I haven't heard of a serious issue between the 2. If I had to just take a swing, it sounds like you might need to go in from the EZ Drummer side and remap manually if you haven't done that already. That can be brutal, but sometimes it's the only way. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck!

    so I currently have the alesis nitro mesh kit. I've had it about a year and it was my first kit. I feel like I'm ready to get something bigger and has a better feel to it. I was saving up for the roland td-17kvx. but then I thought, if I'm saving up for a roland set that cost about $2000 (including having to buy a hi hat and bass pedal) why not spend an extra couple hundred bucks and get the alesis strike pro se which is much bigger. I was wondering if you think that would be a good idea or if I should stick with the roland cause everyday it's like I change my mind on what I actually want. I've played the roland set at a guitar center once and I loved it. but like i said, should I spend the extra and get a bigger set or just stick to the roland set?

    • @BeneathVultures
      @BeneathVultures  4 роки тому

      It comes down to 2 things - what features you want and what you're willing to put up with. If you want tons of options and don't mind fiddling quite a bit to dial it in... I'd go Alesis. Also, the Strike Pro is solid but Roland kits are usually built like tanks. If you are rough on your equipment the Roland will probably hold up longer and require less work to get it to respond the way you like. Hope that helps make it a little more straightforward of a choice.
