So I just spent the whole week working with the Alesis Strike Editor and they updated the firmware so you can ignore the 200MB kit size limit. I used Lustark SDSE and Reaper and exported all 7 stock kits FULL 24bit from Superior drummer 3. each kit is 1-2.5GB and takes about 15 seconds to load, but you can get the full resolution samples with no cutoff or downsampling. It sounds so so real, absolutely convincing to the highest professional standards. It's really insane, and incomparable to 16bit samples when played side by side. It's really worth knowing that you can do this, you can really ignore the kit size limit and go HAM with anything you want!
Hi! How should I write to find a video or turorial to lear about those "add-ons" or "plugins" from external software? I've been always playing the sound integrated in the drums but this is really instresting!

I played Roland and Yamaha for 25 years, and finally tried the Alesis Strike when it came out. Within 3 mos, my crash....crashed. and I had to replace my kick soon after, due to a piezo failure. Finally, I upgraded a smaller tom with the exact same model of tom already on the kit, but I could never get it to have the same attack and projection regardless of settings, which suggests either a different quality of piezo, a different internal configuration or inconsistent quality of assembly. Believe me, I have no allegiance to Roland, and some of their entries are pretty uninspired(bland), but I never had a Roland pad failure in two decades across 3 different kits. I finally sold my Strike in favor of a new TD-17KVX and although the sounds are more limited, the overall Roland quality is there, and customizing sounds is a bit more intuitive and direct. However, for the price, Alesis gives you much for your money, and the aesthetics are more 'drumlike' than is the Roland. if Alesis can upgrade their quality on the mid-range kits, I think they can really give Roland a run for its money. Maybe it will be a different story in 5 years. Others have had great results with their Alesis kits, so take my story as anecdotal. It just wasnt for me.
Yeah the SE fixed a lot of the issues with previous models, but unfortunately the Strike and Strike Pro were rushed and tarnished the reputation of the Strike line of kits and even Alesis for many people.
Very helpful comment. Thank you. I’m looking at buying a mid range sub€2000 kit and it’s so confusing to choose without constructive reviews like your’s. Td-17kvx keeps coming up, so maybe this kit?
I am thinking of buying some electronic drums for my upcoming 70th birthday.. I am far wiser about the subject now thanks to your efforts. I have really enjoyed your presentation and drum skills. Thank you.
@@65Drumshello i got the Yamaha you mentioned in this video. The kit and module are amazing but why is it you have to be so precise with striking each pad? Example would be i would have to strike dead center of the pads to get a sound. Every other part of the pad you dont hear anything. Is that a module issue or tinkering? Thats my only concern but its awesome
Do it. I started learning last year aged 40 and haven't looked back since. I'm also looking to upgrade my TD-1DMK starter kit after 18 months to one of the sets mentioned in this video.
Learning to drum after years of wanting to give it a try. I read reviews on reliability and decided to purchase the TD17KVS (step up from the L model in Canada) that I was renting during my drum lessons as I just couldn't see myself using anything else. I feel I made a good purchase for myself and my budget. I didn't want to deal with failing parts and returns etc which would take away from my valuable practice time as a beginner.
@PaPa Frampton Hello sir, sorry for disturbing you but may i ask for your opinion about yamaha DTX6-K2X ? Cause i'm planning to buy that drum set ( yeah i can't afford the K3X, cause the short amount of money) it's my first time buying e-drum cause 3 years ago i only used acoustic drum set but i sell it cause it's noisy and my house is placed in a crowded neighbourhood. I just wanna spend the good amount of money on the right set so i won't be disappointed.. do you have another recommend ? And yeah i'm planning to make a drum cover and i didn't know how to edit so i have still a lot to learn.. and thank you so much + i'm so sorry for asking too much ( sorry for my english too, it's not my mother tongue ).
Thank you Justine for this video. I am missing the ATV EXS-5 drum kit in this comparison. It is in your price range and has similar features as competing models.
Got a TD17kvx here (from Ebay for just £950 a year back) and no complaints, great kit for the price vs what we used to get in that price band! (use it with Superior Drummer 3 rooms of Hansa for sounds). Build quality, trigger quality, reliability and response are more important to me than 'built in sounds' or even 'fake acoustic set' looks. You can easily switch on a (used) 12" snare pad for the floor tom as you know. The Yammy looks too toy like to me!
I was ready to buy the Alesis Surge Mesh, when I found a TD-17KV and Simmons DA-50 drum amp for $600 and a five hour round trip. Craigslist is your friend. This newb loves your channel, Justin.
I know the price is not the same, but if you had to pick between Roland TD17KVX and the Alesis Strike Pro SE, which one would you choose and why? I can't decide properly!
Does this list change if you plan on only using the module as a computer interface to use VSTs? Might be a cool video, I’d love a video like, “Best kits under $2000 for VST use.”
I have the Aleisis Strike kit, and although not that happy with the hithat sound reproduction ( I also bought the extra Tom and crash), I feel its a far better kit than the others, especially the larger drums sizes - this helps me significantly when transitioning between my home studio using the Alesis kit to being able to hit a full accoustic kit with ease when at a venue. The transition between the two is made so much easier due to the Alesis kit's larger drum sizes and also part by the the larger frame setup. I just wish Alesis could reproduce the sounds that the Yamaha can - then it would be a near perfect electronic kit.
Roland ,reliable solid ,I found too many latency and build quality problems for me and Yamaha while good quality thier pads are too small and you get alot less for your money
Roland all the way ,I played an alessis at a music store came back to try it again and the snare trigger was broken ,ive played the Roland kits and never found a broken trigger ,Roland has almost no latency and they just feel great ,ive had a td 17kvx and it's solid reliable and extremely customizable, you may give up some options but what good are those options if your kit isn't working ??
Absolutely love my 17kvx! I don’t love the snare sounds, but now days I run SSD5 through it and I’m so satisfied that I lost all desire to want to upgrade to a higher tier roland kit someday. Sure if I had the disposable money to buy a td50 or one of the VAD kits I would. But I’m completely satisfied with the 17.
I’m the same. I never use the module when recording. But the 17KVX is a great all around kit and all I need. I use SSD5 and Native Instrument kits. Lately I’ve got a couple of GGD kits too. They sound great.
Have a look at some fresh sounds for your module, the Roland stock sounds are a bit lame but you can easily improve them for 30 to 40€. The big advantage is that you don't need a PC and you have the native lowest possible latency. And the sounds are great: ua-cam.com/video/SDaefx6Mk5U/v-deo.html
There is a module called fame hybrid pro which sounds really good, you can import samples, direct outs, metal enclosure etc. You might wanna take a look at this. Its cheap too. Im thinking of selling my recently bought td-17 module to get this one instead but i would like your review on it first.
Hey, man! Thx for the video! Glad I watched your video, cause I wouldn't have known that the hi-hat stand and bass-drum pedal weren't included. What would you recommend for a hi-hat stand and bass-drum pedal for this kit? Thx!
I didn't catch which of these is the best one. 65Drum Dude, if you had to pick one, what would you recommend? Was the Roland your favorite or did you just get it because you had a good deal?
Just a kind correction, if I may. (Since the time of this video, the set could have changed) but as far as I know the KVX comes with a 10" hi hat and not the 12" as you mentioned.
The Strike Pro costs over AU$3,000 here in Australia. I bought a Crimson II SE for about AU$1,899 almost a year ago & love the feel of the Drum Mesh Heads compared to my Alesis DM-5 Pro I've had for years which has the "Real Head" Drums. Mesh Heads are MUCH quieter to play & have much nicer bounce for double-stroke drum rolls. However, I do feel the Cymbals, especially the Hi-Hat, leave a lot to be desired. I have heard (read in online Forums) that you can upgrade the Hats to the Yamaha 1's that are better to use with the Alesis kits - are you able to confirm this for us please? As in, if I were to buy Yamaha Hats to put on a Pearl Hi Hat Stand (I have both a Pearl & a Dolphin Acoustic Kits also, so...) as opposed to upgrading to the Alesis X-Hats & stand, would it be a more accurate to the real thing setup? I like that the Yamaha Cymbals are larger & all Triple Zone, though, are all 3 Zones well-placed & work well? I have found with my Alesis Crimson Ride, which is Triple Zone, the Bell can be very finicky - it either works as a Bell when struck, or not, & I as often as not, am likely to get the Ride Bow sound instead. Quite annoying, I must say. Especially for an almost AU$2K outlay. 2 Grand ain't cheap for an unemployed person trying to setup their own Home Studio. 😂 I use Toontrack EZD2 with their MetalHeads expansion for my sounds, & go through my Steinberg UR44 Interface using a 5-Pin MIDI Cable as I want to keep my remaining PC USB Ports available, & my UR44 doesn't have USB MIDI In, only 5-Pin In & Out/Thru. LOL It all still works just fine though, so... I use Reaper as my DAW of choice also. Great DAW for the low price, I must say. I am very impressed with Reaper. Thanks for the 😎 e-kit videos mate.
Quick question for you as I can't seem to find that comparison anywhere. I play mostly rock, prog and some metal (think Rush, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden), and I have played actively for 15 years, and on and off for another 8 on top of that due to housing constraints. Up here in Canada, I can get a brand new Strike Pro or a TD-20 for the same price (most of the ones I see don't have the expansion board). What would be your take on that, especially as far as sounds go, machine-gunning and overall hi-hat feel? I played a TD-50 next to the Alesis and obviously the latter was no match. So far, the biggest thing for the TD-20 is cosm modelling and vexpressions, but the Alesis is over a decade newer. Last time I played a Roland from that era was my TD-12 back in 2012. Cheers!
Hi Justin, big fan of yours, thanks for the awesome videos! I am currently looking for a drum set in this price range, but was leaning towards the atv exs-5 (slightly more expensive, but I found a bundle at 2050€). Any reason why you didn't include it in the video ? 3 sets is enough, price range ?
I NEED HELP ✅✅😂 but I just saw the alesis crimson ll Se for $600 brand new or should I buy a Roland TD-07 for like $800 all I just want is GOOD sound but a large kit ( IM PLANNING TO BUY A KIT IN THE NEXT 2 WEEKS)
I went with the Alesis Strike(coming next Thursday). First off, I'm a bass player but it's my band and I get what I want. The drum module alone on the Alesis kit sold me for the ability to run each output of the kit into our digital mixer so we have ultimate control of our mix. 1800 sounds? Jesus, how many do you need? The large size of the snare appealed to our drummer. I've heard this kit played 20 times and I think we'll be able to get by with the sounds even though drum aficionados aren't enthralled. We can always add a crash or the Roland hi hat if the Alesis one is really that bad. I love the look of the kit for putting it on stage though we may adapt a 23 inch red sparkle kick for performances.Justin, you are a treasure man. Thanks for all the info.
Hi Justin, I received my PDX-12 snare about a month ago and just noticed that the mesh head is a Roland head. This head seems to have a bit of a mushy rebound compared to the PDX-8 snare that has the Roland/Remo mesh head. Have you noticed any difference in rebound/bounce feel with the PDX-12"? Thanks. Love your video's. Sarah"❤
Would you recommend the VAD306 over the Strike Pro SE? I got the VAD two days ago and I’m pretty underwhelmed overall, the small cymbals feel odd and have actually been giving me a lot of triggering issues. I’m mainly looking for a good feeling midi controller more than a great stand alone e-kit
Hi Justin, I recently purchased a Alesis Crimson II SE Kit. Love the kit and the pads. I was wondering... can I upgrade the kit with a Alesis Strike Pro Module? Would I have any issue with that?
I couldn’t get over how ridiculously small the Yamaha toms were there is no way in hell I consider buying it it looks like a kids toy and far to small for a grown up lol , I play an old Roland td20 with various other brains connected but I do like the Alesis at least it feels somewhat more like a drum kit should and looks nice 👍
HAY Have you tried filling you drums with loose cotton in your converted kit to dampen the shell ????? I've done this to my mapex kit and regular drum heads saying that I don't really care about my neighbours also have you tried the Magadrum module Cheers from Ireland 👍
Hi. Is it possible to play snare center, rimshot and cross stick on the Alesis Strike (like DTX) or do you need to load a different patch for this? Also, do you have a link to the latest free Alesis kit samples that you mention?
You should review the Millenium MPS-850 E-Drum Set. It is very affordable considering all of its specs, and I would be interested in seeing what you think about it.
I just wanted to say I appreciate all your informative videos. I have a drum set that is a combination of a roland TD 17 KVX and a Drumtec five piece shells. I also have a couple of ATV cymbals and 2 12 in roland toms. The reason I am telling you all this is because I only have the TV 17 module that came with the Roland. I want to order the alesis drum module and combine the two to accommodate extra triggers that I have. The problem is, I didn’t realize when I bought the drum tec Tom‘s , the Drumtec Tom’s are not compatible with alesis modules. I saw a video one time of yours where you combine two different drum modules into one, or at least that’s how I understood it. I also have superior drummer three download it on my laptop. My question is, is there a way to route my drum tech triggers in some fashion to where they could be ran to the alesis module and be recognized. One of the reasons I like the Alesis drum module is you can record yourself easily and it is very user-friendly. I am also a guitar player and I would like to be able to lay down a drum track on the alesis for playback. If I can’t find someway for Mý alesis to recognize the drum tec tom‘s it is probably not the module for me. I was just trying to avoid spending $3000 on a rolland to 50 X. Will a mixing board accomplish this? Once again I would like to say that you are of great credit to the drum community. Keep on rocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought an Alesis Command x kit one year ago,it was my first E Kit,,got it home and feels great except, kick drum trigger has failed four times and snare trigger has failed twice, dont even use it for gigging, could someone please tell me if this is normal for E Drums?
Have you tried the HXW Avatar SD301-2, they look just like the strike pro comes with the kick and hi-hat well made shells and rack. paid $1999.00 CAD = $1623 USD.
"...Alesis is never hesitant to send out replacement parts..." Oh yes they are. I own the DM10 MkII Pro, and after a few months the pads started dying. I started emailing support, but never got an answer from them. I was surprised because plenty of people have claimed good experiences with Alesis. To be fair, this was during Covid, so I expect they had reduced staffing, but through my whole warranty period, the only response I ever got from Alesis was an automated email advising me that in case my inquiries had so far been unanswered (as was indeed the case), that I should re-submit my claim in a response to THAT email, which I promptly did. However, I never got another response /answer/anything from the company. (Yes, I checked my junk/spam folders, etc...) So now I have a nice-looking kit folded up in the corner of my living room with four dead pads, (oh, AND now that I think of it, one of the cymbals was going intermittent as well), and all I can really do with it might be to sell the remaining good parts on Ebay, but it sickens me to even look at it. I really REALLY wanted to upgrade to the Strike Pro SE someday, but now I can't imagine owning anything from Alesis.
So, question about the Roland module, you can import samples, I remember a video of Sirendrums, or what his studio username is now, importing vst samples into the strike module, would you be able to do the same thing with the Roland module??
Can you possibly do something about the VAD 506 I just got? It’s the says 27 and I’m totally living it although I’m struggling with figuring out why it won’t connect with my desktop (Mac) and cannot download the software at all. No matter how many tries it just won’t connect with it. Do other people have this issue? And overall what’s your opinion of the module? Thanks so much.
Hey y’all! I just got a Roland TD17 KVX and I want to sound proof my room just outa consideration for the fam and the neighbors. Any tips on how to go about doing that?
Blankets on the walls, if you can buy some specific to sound deadening, even better (look them up on the internet). If that costs too much, the thicker the better, but you can always buy some cheaper moving blankets. You might also try some foam padding, (in sections, not everywhere). I put some in each corner of my room and although it may not have helped make things quieter, it did make the room sound better. This will help deaden some of the echo in your room. About the only thing beyond that is some fake walls or partitions, but that might be going too far. I'm not an expert, just someone who has tried a few things that worked for me. Just Google sound deadening blankets on Google or Amazon and you'll get a bunch of ideas. Good luck.
Owner of DTX 700k here. Yamaha Drums. It is not an accurate depiction of an acoustic drum at all besides the drum sounds. Your rim shots on this snare pad wouldn't carry over to a real acoustic snare because it is far too easy to trigger. I've played exclusively on my E-kit for years, and when transitioning to an acoustic kit, the sizes threw me way off. And the Rim Shot on Acoustic drums are way harder to trigger than the E kit. Personally now, I would buy an Alesis as it would really help you move on to Acoustic Drums easily. Sizes and travel distance are important friends.
You should check out the atv exs-kit with the Roland td17 module and vh10 hihat, which drumtec is offering. I have it myself and am more than happy with it.
@@systemfan92 Oh damn im sure ive read you can make it work properly but that rolando hihat trigger better but slightly. Nowdays i think it doesnt matter as everyone will be scraping money up for td27 and the digiboy hihat
If anything I would rather buy a used kit from you man lol I see that you take care of your stuff so if you ever have any kits you wanna get rid of let me know
Roland used gear is generally a good buy if its not obviously abused. Ive had 2 whole Rolands sets all used parts that worked fine. In fact Ive never bought a brand new Roland anything.
Great review. I'm not a drummer, but I'm going to be getting into an e-drum kit next month (I'm eyeing the TD 17-KVX)...but it was great seeing what else is available. You made me check out the Alesis models (I really don't know much about e-drums though). What I'm thinking of doing is buying the TD 17-KVX, but then start saving up for the TD 50X drum module to upgrade. I'm also eyeing a 12" tom as an "add-on"...and a double-kick pedal for the base.
Hello Justin. For me, your comparaison is biased for one main reason : No one can buy the Alesis Strike at this day and since 6 months. If the basic version of thé Strike as to come back, it will probably be with some improvements including the new hit hat and the reinforced pads of the SE.
I'm torn between getting the td-17kvx now, or saving up a bit longer to get the td-27kv. As a novice drummer, common sense would say just get the td-17, but I sure like the extra features (compressor, 28 track output) of the 27 that I think I'd be able to grow with more down the road. If anyone's tried them both, what do you think? Thank you.
Dude. Someone needs to go ask every single Edrum maker, “how many kits have you played where the floor Tom is smaller than the snare?” My biggest complaint with all of these kits and most e-kits in general. At LEAST make the floor Tom pad AS big as the snare. Plz. Plz plz. 😅

Roland's are solid but ALWAYS sound awful
Great as always.
Cant wait for the next review at the next price bracket.
Thank you for this! Super helpful
Hey, man! Thx for the video! Glad I watched your video, cause I wouldn't have known that the hi-hat stand and bass-drum pedal weren't included. What would you recommend for a hi-hat stand and bass-drum pedal for this kit?
Thx!
I am curently saving up for the Roland, and I was wondering where or what would be the best options for a high hat stand
I like two leg stands, I personally have the PDP one
I use Toontrack EZD2 with their MetalHeads expansion for my sounds, & go through my Steinberg UR44 Interface using a 5-Pin MIDI Cable as I want to keep my remaining PC USB Ports available, & my UR44 doesn't have USB MIDI In, only 5-Pin In & Out/Thru. LOL
It all still works just fine though, so...
I use Reaper as my DAW of choice also. Great DAW for the low price, I must say.
I am very impressed with Reaper.
Thanks for the 😎 e-kit videos mate.
Great Video. I have a Quick question, have you ever tried the Millenium MPS-850 or the MPS-1000 ? If so do you recommend it ?
Great Review
Thank You
I NEED HELP ✅✅😂 but I just saw the alesis crimson ll Se for $600 brand new or should I buy a Roland TD-07 for like $800 all I just want is GOOD sound but a large kit ( IM PLANNING TO BUY A KIT IN THE NEXT 2 WEEKS)
Is it worthy buying a used one!? The difference is around $600 , I need a good hihat , I have a alesis nitro
Description says $1000 great video thanks
When is about edrums reviews you are the only guy i trust! Is there any edrums in the $400 to $900 price tag ??
Consider used Roland or Yamaha stuff. If it hasnt been abused its generally pretty reliable
This was a great review!
Would you at $1999 have conisdered the new efnote if you had access to it?
Possibly. I played the proto-type a few years ago and it was interesting. I want to try out that kit sometime this year
You should do this series for a bunch of different prices
Hey Justin! Will I get the best of both worlds if I swap the module of my TD17KVX with a Strike module?
I am satisfied with my Yamaha dtx 450 ✌️✌️
Best kit is yamaha by landslide - like if agree
Any plans for an update for 2023?
I would try to get the 17kvx version one on sale. Sell the 13" ride and buy a cy15r used.
HAY Have you tried filling you drums with loose cotton in your converted kit to dampen the shell ????? I've done this to my mapex kit and regular drum heads saying that I don't really care about my neighbours also have you tried the Magadrum module
Cheers from Ireland 👍
They don't sell that brand in USA music stores. Millennium is based in Europe, so I've never been able to play one
I have PDX-12 snare and Im looking to upgrade but im wondering if its worth it. Is the Roland PDA100L or Roland PD-128S that much better?
Roland TD17KVX - лучший!
Nice comparison!
How many acoustic kits are seen live vs. electronic kits?
NUX DM7X Have you heard of this brand $1600 in Australia Remo makes their mesh heads??
Hey I like the td17 but can you do a review please on the td12 brain module
Can you review some drums you buy off ebay
I bought an Alesis Command x kit one year ago,it was my first E Kit,,got it home and feels great except, kick drum trigger has failed four times and snare trigger has failed twice, dont even use it for gigging, could someone please tell me if this is normal for E Drums?
Have you tried the HXW Avatar SD301-2, they look just like the strike pro comes with the kick and hi-hat well made shells and rack. paid $1999.00 CAD = $1623 USD.
Where you able to get roland to fix or replace the high hat?
Can you add more kits to the Td-17 module? I don’t mind paying to add kits just wounded if it is possible.
So, question about the Roland module, you can import samples, I remember a video of Sirendrums, or what his studio username is now, importing vst samples into the strike module, would you be able to do the same thing with the Roland module??
Why the sound from my headphones is different than the sound after I exported from the drum
How would you rate the Efnote 3 for $1,800 in 2024?
I want to see a video of you just playing drums
Good luck.
@@vicariousjohnson9823 Thanks man, appreciate the help!
Do drummer's joints suffer more playing electronic kits vs acoustic kits? I'd love to find out.
I think the actual pad matters. My 8 inch mesh bass drum pad would leave my knees aching a little. But my 20" mesh bass drum is easier on my knees.
I have it myself and am more than happy with it.
why not the atv hi hat?
@@jezusmylord I think it is because of some issues with the lower cymbal trigger of the atv and the td17
Im going to be getting the alesis strike pro se. can someone who has the kit tell me the pros and cons?
Great review. I'm not a drummer, but I'm going to be getting into an e-drum kit next month (I'm eyeing the TD 17-KVX)...but it was great seeing what else is available. You made me check out the Alesis models (I really don't know much about e-drums though). What I'm thinking of doing is buying the TD 17-KVX, but then start saving up for the TD 50X drum module to upgrade. I'm also eyeing a 12" tom as an "add-on"...and a double-kick pedal for the base.
Great vid
Hello Justin. For me, your comparaison is biased for one main reason : No one can buy the Alesis Strike at this day and since 6 months. If the basic version of thé Strike as to come back, it will probably be with some improvements including the new hit hat and the reinforced pads of the SE.
What about the atv exs3 ?
I think
Td17kvx
can you use brushes on an electronic kit?
I know some Roland modules have brush settings. Nylon only. Metal will tear mesh up quickly.
1800 for pads and no hi hat?
Hell no
I'm torn between getting the td-17kvx now, or saving up a bit longer to get the td-27kv. As a novice drummer, common sense would say just get the td-17, but I sure like the extra features (compressor, 28 track output) of the 27 that I think I'd be able to grow with more down the road. If anyone's tried them both, what do you think? Thank you.
I have a td17 kvx its solid.reliable and very customizable,
@@DonaldGerbino And it has the sounds of the TD50 flagship model.
Dude. Someone needs to go ask every single Edrum maker, “how many kits have you played where the floor Tom is smaller than the snare?” My biggest complaint with all of these kits and most e-kits in general. At LEAST make the floor Tom pad AS big as the snare. Plz. Plz plz. 😅
Or efnote sticking tiny bass drums on otherwise normal looking kits.
