In my 55 yrs as a drummer the best advice I can give is to use anything and everything to help you hold your sticks! Over time you lose grip and carpel tunnel, trigger release surgeries will be a part of your future as it was in mine. Tossing sticks while doing the most passionate part of your life is depressing! I finally found Stick Twirls and I put them on the fulcrum of my sticks with the ring on my index fingers and I'm good to go for life! You can replace any piece of equipment but your hands, hearing, feet or what ever you are the most important piece of equipment you'll ever have! Over a half of a century your love of genres will change! Drum, cymbal, rack, throne brands, sizes, setup, sticks are going to change as often as you change your socks! Take care of yourself, your passion, have patience and you'll have longevity!

Roll on 30 YEARS and after hooking up again with some of my old band mates it's time to start making some noise again. Been doing music my whole life, love electronic music, but always felt a true live drum track makes for the heart of the best songs (even though I know these days those are often electronic as well). I wish I had these lessons when I was starting. All I ever wanted to be was a great rock drummer. I got overwhelmed with all the rudiments. But knowing i can just work on singles, doubles. paradiddles and flams and not focus so much on chops, just being solid would have really changed my direction and attitude toward the instrument. But you're never to old to retool and take a fresh approach at it. That's what I'm doing! Thanks Drumeo and Randy!

Priceless tuning advice. I sound-checked for a recent gig after quickly tuning my toms to the most resonant note, and snare tuned medium top and bottom. My drums were overpowering on stage. To fix them I de-tuned all the toms to 'lowest note possible' and added moon gels, choked my snare-side head and de-tuned the batter. Fatter, tighter sound with a shorter throw.
