@@Zamai One issue he might have gone into: Dave Weckl, Mike Mangini, and Larnell Lewis are all great drummers. No argument. There's nothing wrong with admiring them. But so are Jim Keltner, Levon Helm, Al Jackson Jr., and Ringo. No, they can't play half of what Dave, Mike, and Larnell can, but they're still great. And if you're playing with other people, there'll usually be a whole lot more times you'll want to know how to play like Jim, Levon, Al Jr., or Ringo, than like Dave, Mike, or Larnell.

Hello Stephen, thanks for sharing this lesson. Even if I don't consider myself a beginner no more but somewhat between grooving and gigging Drummer, there is lots to learn from this video.
Most importantly to me is the Aaron Sterling paradigm: good Drumparts derive from the melody of the song, be it Vocals, piano or guitar.
This became apparent with the August Song of the Month challenge, when I first entered your community. The kick pattern in Ben Rector's Heroes matches the beginning piano melody and makes up the whole song special and so energetic.
Second to me is the meditation in simple beats and the mastery of those basics to become a passionate musician. This is so very important, as music is the universal language of the heart. If you burn for music and are passionate about your playing you can send this passion and energy to the other musicians and the audience. A passionate musician will always have a great time playing.
      Thank you for this insight.

@@Baribrotzera story of mine is I played with this band at its formation and i went to a more “progressive jazz” influenced band. The band I left got a record deal and the guys gave me a copy of the album. It’s painful listening to the new drummer approximate my drums poorly. Their second album was very good. The new drummer played much better with the band. My style fit much better with my band. Nothing was bad, but when you hear a drummer that really fits, it just makes so much sense.

I love your channel and like your videos, but I think they would be 10x more effective if they were shorter and divided by chapters. This video could have been edited to a good 10 minutes without losing any important content. Just my two cents, keep up the good work.

I second the idea of them being a little shorter. It's not a matter of attention span, but rather that the videos are simply long.

And the most important skill that so many very young drummers at a very early age wished they had learned or been taught the correct way & that is the Traditional Grip because a lot of them got caught up in the 70's when all those rock drummers were playing with the Timbales Grip or better known as the Match Grip. With the TG they'll be able 2 fully understand & play all of the original nice & beautiful Thirteen Rudiments & then later incorporate them nicely in 2 the Drum Set & remember 2 always have a Metronome so that the Method, Technic & Skill effectively is used as one sound & let them speak tastefully inside the music where I guarantee you that the Pocket will always fall ever so gracefully!
As the great Duke Ellington once said.......

As a musician for quite a few decades I bought a kit, had it for about a month.
Absolutely loved it, playing over backing tracks etc etc.
Had to sell it, noise was too much. No one complained, but I know my neighbours probably felt awkward, but they started playing music in the garden. They stopped when i did.

When I was 14 I played in a drum and bugle band. Fast forward 58 years I am now 72. I have decided to try and learn how to be a drummer. I just found your channel thanks…. my two favourite drummers are Kieth Moon and Ginger Baker… Ginger baker says in his mind the Para Diddle is the most import of all the drum rudiments to learn ..inside and out. Plus everything that you do with your right hand learn how to do with your left hand it will not take very long to become totally ambidextrous…
Thanks for your work ….Trivia ..Ginger Baker was self taught … no lessons …he got quick tips from a good drummers every once in a while … Charlie Watts was kicked out of a band so Ginger Baker could play in it… that’s when Charlie became the drummer for the Stones..peace

BuckrBill so great to read your comments. I too am 72. Took lessons for a while in my 30s and bought a Ludwig kit almost identical to Ringo's kit from the early 60s from my teacher.
That kit is lost to history. A couple years ago I picked up a used dw5000 kit for almost nothing. Over the past 6mos starting practicing rudiments again. Having a lot of fun. Wishing you the best in your endeavors.

It's always good to go back at the beginning to see what you've missed. I feel this for some time now. We (the band) have reached a point where we were jamming too much... I was not listening properly, I was going maybe too fast or too slow and definitely too many crashes and breaks... Now I'm practicing simple things, like stick control and simple rhythms (no more breaks) and I already feel more confident and feel things that I wasn't able to feel before. Just subscribed and successfully received the book! Thank you for the reminder!

Mastering Playing Simply. Years ago I saw ACDC on the Black Ice tour. I was blown away watching Phil Rudd play Whole Lot of Rosie. That song with the guitar solo is very long. It is a simple beat but he never lost time once. Sometimes fills and small additions to the beat cover for the drummer losing time but Rudd was steady like a metronome. Amazing. Everyone is watching Angus Young solo but I'm watching Phil Rudd amazed he didn't get a cramp.

Love this! I've been playing a long time but admit to being a bit of a hack. I have fun but want to get better. I wanted to play drums in school while growing up but was told by the teacher "we already have too many drummers so NO, you can't play drums." 60 years old and I'm still playing. Still having fun. Even played in a few bands and like you, was a drummer for our church Praise Band. Thanks for posting this. BTW, when I filled in as drummer for a particular gig, I noticed the bass player was kind of laying back and watching me play. When we went on break, I asked him if I was messing up and why he was watching me so closely? He said he was matching his bass playing to my kick drum. Made sense because I noticed how those two seem to coincide on certain songs. (You just addressed that! Bass player and drummer)

Thanks for another great video, Stephen! You've been doing this for a while and they're always valuable. You asked, and after 50+ years of playing, I'm going with "Interacting w/the melody" as #1 playing skill for improvising or playing with a band, with the "Dynamics Pyramid" a strong second. With regards to "learning", I'm going with your training for "Bouncing the beater"... back when I took lessons (the second time to overcome plateaus), that was the best thing I learned - keep that ankle loose! I might add the option of "accenting the 1" after the build up from not striking to striking the bass...adding the accent helps control it, and 1/16ths! Thanks for the download as well! Looking forward to reading the fills and giving them a shot! Best wishes for success!

More great stuff, Stephen! As a beginner of just a few months, I'm not playing (or trying to play) many songs yet. Once I'm at that point, I'm sure the Melody will be extremely valuable. For now, and the next couple of months, I think both 3&4, motion with the rebound and beater will be the most valuable to me. I'm playing the bass pedal heel up and I end up burying the beater all the time. Going to work on finding a "rest" position for my heel up foot that is more relaxed. Thanks for continuing to do what you do for all of us, even the non-paying customers!

Very good set of advise...very practical and easy to understand. Thanks for your work. Keep it up, please. Just also want to share that I started learning drums (self taught) when I was 14 years old in 1980. The method I used was listening to the tune I would want to 'copy' and sort of isolate the drums in my brain. I t was the ear method and I learned from that approach. The very first tune I was inspired to follow was Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, well at least, the main bulk of the beat that John Bonham made. It was a bit challenging at first because the guitars and strings were somewhat 'off' or disjointed against the constant drum beat of 4 beats in a bar. But I learned to somehow filter off the drums and use that to start learning.

Great video! I think the biggest thing for me was learning to play with the melody. Or, _a melody_ at least: I slightly disagree with the bit about not having to listen to the bass player as much. I do think vocals are important to listen to as a drummer, but I do pay a lot of attention to the bass as well and feel that gives myself as the drummer a chance to be that powerhouse of the band together with the bass player - the V8, and when needed, to give the low end some space and breathing room as to not become too overpowering.

Keeping it simple is going to be my challenge. I love to go full-on 100% of the time and find myself having to strip down the drum parts to the ‘essence’ of what I am hearing in my head. I ask myself, “Take away 75% of what I just played, can I still feel the groove and keep the skeleton of the idea I want to communicate?”

I've been a drummer for decades. The overwhelming amount of knowledge that you dont have about drumming never goes away. It is not an instument that can be mastered. You can become absolutely amazing, but there's no masteting the drumkit. You will *never* run out of things to learn (which is awesome because you can play for a lifetime and never get bored). You'll get stuck of course, sometimes for months, but you'll never have a lack of new things to learn.
I wouldn't mind beijg Dave Weckl, but it definitely ain't happening lol!

    Drumming/Percussion, any instrument really.
#1 thing to learn is tune your ears into what you're hearing (as in sample music you're trying to play to.) Then tune your ears into what you're playing. Where you place your drum sticks on every piece of equipment. Where you're hitting, how hard or soft you're hitting, how dynamic you're hitting. Quick/slow, flinging, slapping, washing, whatever. Get to know every sound you can get out of each drum or cymbal. Muscle/memory. You need this more than anything in order to react without thinking.
#2 slowly expand reactions with combinations. You should already know how to alternate every other stick strike automatically before wandering off to do more with combinations. This includes how dynamic each strike response is supposed to be. You want to get beyond thinking. There is no cheat or short cut to gain this ability other than putting in tons of time. Hundreds of hours? Not even close. Thousands and thousands. Don't expect to be good in just 2-3 years. You can be good or complimentary but you won't be anything more than average with anything less.
#3 don't beat yourself up with anything too challenging. If you can't do something the way it's intended then find something else to do to fill in what you're aiming for later as you continue to develop. Baby steps. No one ever started out full throttle and passed any finish line on a regular basis if you did something once by chance and couldn't repeat it dozens or hundreds of times without fail.
#4 stick control. This includes using the right sticks. Not every song calls for a 2B stick. Some may call for a 5A, or a 7A, or nylon tip or not (super basic but it matters.) Know your equipment and know it well. This also goes for tuning your drums. About 90% of the drummers who I used to hear playing in bars used to have terribly tuned drums. Cymbals too tight or too loose. No dampening or too much. You - you need to find out what sounds/tones best work not only for you but also for the tunes you're playing. Some drummers hit harder than others. Some don't. Same for music needs. When you buy drum sticks stop right there and tune them at the counter. Tune? Yes tune. Look that up there are methods available and it's too hard to dig into here.
5# aligned with all these minor attributes to drumming you need to drop your ego and leave it at the door. You don't matter. Only the sounds you produce matter. While you drop your ego increase and gain your confidence. You can do both without being overly arrogant (As way too many drummers do who are genuinely only worth a dime a dozen.) If someone says you're good thank them kindly but let their words fall on the floor; then leave them there. Appreciate their kind words but don't fill your head with them. Unless you hear it from many professionals chances are you have a long way to go.

I play bass and picked up drums a few years ago but dont play a whole lot. bass either....being an adult and parent sucks sometimes. I love your videos and i like keeping things simple. I find the simple things can be more difficult at times. I love playing funk on my bass but when i get behind my set i feel lost because i want to play those groves and i cant. on the bass its different and i try to match myself but i know its my fault because im trying to match how i play on my bass but i know that when i sit down im trying to over compensate instead of relaxing. i love your videos and have learned all the bad things that i do but never realized. its never been about timing, its always been about trying to play what im not capable of. i even bought a 7 piece kit and i started just using 5. i feel more comfortable with 2 floor toms and 1 rack tom. it was way too much and unnecessary. i still have a lot more to learn but your videos have helped a ton.

I think of this channel as the "back to basics" channel. Even though I'm somewhat far along as a drummer, I come here to make sure I've got the fundamentals down or could improve some basic aspect of my drumming.
I have something to add. I liked the part about playing simply, but I would say to record yourself while playing your simple groove. A lot of times you may think you've got that simple groove down cold, but when you listen to it on on playback, it sounds wambly or makes you feel uneasy. That's how you can identify what needs improvement.

For me is using the hihat pedal. I’ve played drums as a second instrument for decades now. The entire time I’ve practiced mainly double pedal patterns the most and completely ignored the hihat pedal. So now even when I try to play stuff considered easy that uses the hihat, I get messed up and can’t do it. But otherwise I’d consider myself a medium advanced player. I’ve spent months trying to fix this but cannot trick my muscles into doing it.

Part 3-Finale and “Shocking Truth”! Pathways of Motion was a co-collaborated project of Bruce Becker’s Mastery of Hand Technique! The path to being very fluid and effortlessly versatile on any size or variety of instrument added to your kit, is BRUCE BECKER original work stolen and marketed by “Steve Smith” as his own discovery of some magical theory only he could conjure up! I’ve worked with both of the “Very Talented Percussion Icons, knowing Steve Smith most of my life, Bruce more recently thanks to Jared Falk and Dave Atkins founding Drumeo, and K-Rad pointing me to Bruce for Arthritis guidance retraining my grip!” I 100% stand behind Bruce on his detailing the truth of “Pathways of Motion” theory being his original creation and style. Because he teaches it with every student, Steve doesn’t teach it privately at all.

I dont really understand the concept why somebody says I NEED TO KNOW GROOVES OR FILLS TO PLAY SONGS. Well I learnt the banjo (and with drums doing the same) just properly learning songs I like bar after bar by heart. After a few songs, grooves and fills simply comes naturally into your vocabulary. Its like learning pulloffs and hammerons on the banjo.. just learn first 2 songs and you will learn them anyway plus the real knowledge of structuring songs. Some songs are immensely easy to learn like America by Rammstein or most pop songs.. then record yourself, correct mistakes.. done. :D

I think when the most skilled drummer plays something simple you can still hear the technique in the beat no matter how simple. A beginner's simple beat still sounds choppy whereas with a😢 seasoned pro it sounds smooth and musical.

Playing simply--play with the music. AC/DC drumming doesn’t work with meshugah and vice versa
    Dynamics between pieces-- play consistently
Smooth motion- drumset specific, set the drums up to get the same stroke on every drum.
Bass drum-- move foot up or down the pedal to create speed or dynamics.
Melody with drums-- sometimes drums lock into bass, guitar, or vocal melodies. Sometimes the drums can create a hook on their own.
I like Steve’s drumming but he’s done a few of these how to videos that are super jazz oriented and not applicable to most drummers.

I know I'll sound kinda nuts here but there's a book about me ya gotta read before you judge the cover, so....
I bought a set of drums days after my divorce, because I could. I have been playing air drums my whole life, but now I have real drums to hit, instead of sitting behind strangers drums in basements.
First thing that pissed me off, I'm left-handed, I have only sat behind right-handed drums all these years, so now I can barely follow a beat without making mistakes, so I stopped playing for quite a while.
I then decided to just re-train my muscles to play, it worked out, but then I noticed that I just can't get a decent sound out of the drums, but I never truthfully tried to tune them, or rather, LEARN how to tune them, my bad.
I decided that the batter and resonant heads are " worn out" so I replaced everything with EVANS EC2's. This was a mistake, because now I have to tune these drums from scratch and I just can't, not only can I not tune them, but I can't tune them together, when I did a little drum roll, it sounded terrible, so I gave up.
I thought I could get myself back into the drums if I maybe added little things to play with ....so I picked up a cowbell, then a screw on tambourine for the hi-hat post, then double pedals, then roto toms, then a marching drum for a snare, then cymbals, 5 cymbals with fancy articulating arm stands, then a steel 6.5 x 14 snare, then an 18" floor tom, and NOW I'm waiting for my 8" and 10" rack toms with support stands to arrive in the mail.
I got depressed because everybody's kick drum sounds so good compared to mine, so I found out the so-called " best" heads for a kick drum for rock is, and I bought them...EMAD 2 for the batter and I honestly forget the name of the resonant head, but "matches" the EMAD 2, and it has a 5" airport in it. Now I can adjust my level of damping.
I became so obsessed with a low end sound from my kick drum, that I even purchased a PA system to mic JUST the kick drum ... Yorkville powered speaker with tripod stands, 2 400 watt subwoofers, Mackie X PRO mixer and 5 mics, and while I was there, I picked up a DJ sound board that had drum effects built in, just so I could have a little fun.
All I did by micing up my drums to a PA system was make terrible sounding drums sound terrible, but LOUDER !!!
Another thing that broke my spirit was the fact that the guy at the music store said that I had purchased Yamaha Stage Custom drums, and they are about the bottom of the barrel if I was looking for deep bass sound ...something I later proved wrong.
Here is where I'm crazy... I have NEVER bought a book on how to play drums, I have never brought down a laptop and played " how to" video on how to tune drums, it's like I got up and went to school, but there were no teachers at school...that's the crazy part of my story ... again .... my bad.
So, I went out and bought a TUNE BOT after reading up on exactly how to use it, I tuned my drums, but not only tuned my drums, but tuned them in unison, as if I had tuned them in Key... when I do a drum roll now, oh my how it sounds so nice and fluid.
Here is another problem that I did not realize, my basement den, is rather large, but it is FILLED with heavy, sound deadening furniture which was chocking the sound of my drums so badly. Once I read that my furniture is killing my drums, I removed almost all, until the drums sounded great, compared to before.
Now that the drums sound great when played, I NOW want to learn how to play the drums properly, As I learn I want to also learn how to read drum music from sheet music, I believe that's important. I have installed a huge big screen TV on the wall down there, computer desk with a fast computer and have it all hooked up to the PA system, so I can learn from UA-cam videos,
Even though I have been " banging" away at my drums for years, I feel I should start from scratch now, learn how to hold the drum sticks properly, warm up exercise's, etc ... just start from scratch so that I start right, and Stephen, I'm going to start by watching EVERY ONE of your video's starting today. I watched a few of the other ones, but I just didn't like them.
I forget to mention something very important to me that has caused me to learn drums online...I am left-handed so watching drum lessons is so confusing for me, BUT I just found a free app that horizontally switches the video around so that NOW, EVERY drummer I watch is left-handed ... you have NO idea how much of a difference that makes to a left-handed drummer. The ONLY bad part is when I read RR LL RR LL RLRL RR ... I have to reverse all that ... hey, life isn't perfect ...adapt.
Not that it matters, but I'll let you know what I have for a setup ...I believe the salesman called it a ROCK setup and not pop or jazz.
Yamaha Stage Custom. 22" kick, 18", 16" floor tom, 13', 12", 10", 8" rack toms, roto toms, 6.5 x 14 Yamaha steel snare, factory heads and wires. ALL Zildjian A Custom cymbals, with A Custom 14 inch hi-hats, 16" crash, 18" crash, 20" medium ride and a 22” HHX EVOLUTION RIDE ( dam that was expensive). 10" HHX Evolution splash, 12" HHX Evolution splash, Pearl Denominator P-930 single pedal with felt beater. And ONE SET OF DRUMSTICKS, that have an indentation in them so that my fingers do not slide down the sticks until I drop them ... I can't even play properly unless I am holding those heavy sticks.

Hi, I was thinking this through half the video, then you said it at the end… “Listen, Listen, Listen….” As far as boring simple beats… listen to to song. Learn to appreciate your contribution to the bigger picture, or even another instruments part. Be passionate about music more than drumming. Listen for your self mix, and overall volume. You can even pick up on hearing when something sounds tight, tense and awkward. Listen to popular music to notice stylistic norms. I listen sometimes thinking what I might do different, try try to understand why… does it still make musical sense? Just because it’s not in the original, doesn’t mean it’s not ok. Different artists and producers have different visions of the final product. You didn’t mention this but the visual effect of false rebound creates the perception of longer articulations… that can be exaggerated but not supporting your very valid point. Slow is smooth… smooth is fast.

I might have to disagree with Passion follows mastery, in order to master anything they say " you spend 10,000 hrs practicing to master anything." No one spends 10,000 hrs doing something if they don't already have a passion for it!
