    Nice video, as always Rob. 👌🏻😉
    If I may add my 2 cents on this, it is very useful to add a fourth section in this practice. Just mix the 3 exercices, then, add the god of drummers : Silence! Introduce silence in some subdivisions of the fill. Very often THE underestimate component of music… Silence make subsequent sounds good.
    So:
    1) sticking
    2) Bass drum
    3) Unisson
    4) Silence
    ❤❤❤

    Coming back to drums at 54 and loving it. But.... so blinded by all this info on UA-cam. Until I found Beatdown, this guy is just so great to listen to. He's been so heplful for an 'OK' drummer like me to raise my game.
    Thanks man, keep up the good work.

    To do the fills I always warm up with stick control and start with a very slow tempo until I get confortable, then progressively start increasing the tempo and making a variation around the drums 🎉

    I love your approach. I think this aids in 'playing the song' vs. memorizing 'fills' by rote.. Listening to what we do vs. following dots on a page.

    I am a drummer of many years. Took my first lesson when I was seven years old. I am now 46.
    But I am always a student.
    And beat down Rob Brown , is easily the absolute best instructor out there on the Internet. Hands-down.
    Cheers 👊🏼

    I’m 51 and just started learning a few weeks ago. I have been watching heaps of videos to help me start out and man, nobody is even close to how easy and relaxed you make it. I don’t even bother looking for new UA-camrs since I discovered your channel. Thanks for the lessons and being so chill that it’s enjoyable to the last second.

    it's an excellent lesson with much value on the placement of the notes and the resulting efficiency and attitude of playinig the kit skillfully. Thanks - it set up some thoughts I was having about trying to get rid of too many notes , aka overplaying - and that can be subjective but I want less notes this lesson brings that into focus for me, - even though you are playing through it.. it's the idea you are presenting so clearly.

    L(FF)L(F)LR(F) @4:35 is exactly the kind of fill that i was looking for. Awesome. Love the joke about being here just cause your cool... I used to have a fill that i started with my low (18") floor tom, kind of backwards too for another interesting approach to creating fills. but i was looking for this video for creating more fills using the BD. THANKS!! I need major help getting my doubles to bounce under control, see i need to turn my 16's to 32's and want to play 64ths but my doubles and singles can't seem to cross the speed threshold where i am at. It is a matter of technique or form that i just do wrong.

    I incorporate a lot of hats in my fills. When I first heard Dave Lombardo do it decades ago I was hooked. Specifically it was in Slayer -Spill the blood. The fill right around the 3:12 mark when he comes in over the melody with a fill then a beat. The fill that he does on there is the reason I started playing drums. It's creative and just sounds beautiful. Check it out. Rob, you keep me wanting to play. Thank you.

      I love the way they recorded those Def Jam Slayer LPs in terms of Drums. It was very skillfull and complimented him greatly. They really make the hi-hats sparkle in the mix and that thunderous bass they got out.. not clicky bass... and of course the tom work and sound is perfect for that style of music but it transcends that to me even. Not a fan of the themes of slayer but appreciate that mid 80s sound they acheived - their first LP on banzai is very good too.. it's just not mixed as well. I am biased never fan of clicky bass. Reminds me of the Bruford kick sound when he was using those horrible synth drums with King Crimson.

    "Playing fast on the toms is like tap dancing on a water bed."

    • @RobBeatdownBrown
      @RobBeatdownBrown  11 місяців тому +1

      The process of learning doubles is pretty simple and there’s no point rushin it. Repetition fixes everything. Learn the form first, do it a few thousand times in a row, then work your speed up. It’ll take however long it takes. There’s a couple videos on doubles on the channel 🤘🏽

    Hey Rob, I'm not sure how dumb a question this is, but I gotta ask: Do you know what fill you're going to play before you play it? Or do you just move into the fill and see comes out? Thank you for all your guidance

    • @RobBeatdownBrown
      @RobBeatdownBrown  Рік тому +3

      I mean, I do and I don’t. In cases of ‘set up’ fills where I’m wanting to head into or out of a specific section a certain way, yeah. I’ll be thinking a couple bars ahead before I play it. Like in pool when you’re setting up your next shot while taking your current one. Other cases, you’re just drawing from your vocabulary while you’re in the moment and you don’t really have to think about it much before you play it. Much like you’d have no problem responding or adding to a conversation with somebody over a coffee. That’s the main reason why we’re constantly expanding our musical vocabulary.

    • @bongothewonderchimp
      @bongothewonderchimp Рік тому

      @@RobBeatdownBrown I'll start by thanking you for taking the time to respond Rob, I can only imagine you're a busy man, and what a great answer! Your metaphor made perfect sense, and like so many times from watching your videos, you open up this whole new level of comprehension that takes me to the next level. From unlocking reggae with the spang -a-lang to my wife's 5 pound kettle bell on the heads I'm tuning, your videos have taken me from an old Gen Xer who hasn't played since punk bands in the 80's, to a new appreciation for the instrument and a constant source of growth and joy. Your videos have been life changing Rob, so from a fellow Canadian I say thank you!
