Coconut oil (butter flavored) is what movie theaters used to use to pop their popcorn. But then at some point the "experts" came out and said Coconut oil is bad for you, so they quit using it in the movie theaters and the stores replaced it with oil. Now the "experts" say coconut oil is once again good for you. Anyhow popcorn tastes so much better when you use coconut oil, and you really can't taste any coconut either. Thank you for your video :)

I had no idea theaters used to use it! I LOVE it with coconut oil, and had never made it this way before I made it in the Instant Pot.

Butter is a saturated good fat. Margarine is not. May advice is to stay away from any butter substitutes.

Thanks for your feedback :) I don't always use what I showed in the video - I did two popcorn experiments on the blog where I used regular butter as well :)

I tried this 3 times and it didn't work. I'm not sure what version your instant pot is and if that makes a difference. I'm also not sure if the difference in brand of popcorn made a difference. My husband was able to pop it on the stove but I never got more than a cup popped.

Teresa LeBleu-Williams - hi! This is becoming a conundrum for me. I recently did an experiment on the blog with 8 different oils to see what worked and what didn't work. Coconut oil is still the most consistent for me. I've got a duo-60, but that shouldn't make a difference because the sauté function is the same temperature. On your coconut oil - is there a high temperature listed?

Your artificial butter is raising the smoking point, so it's possible it won't work well with real butter and virgin coconut oil.

Hi! I did this with real butter and had similar results. I did an experiment with 8 different oils and real butter to see how they all turned out. I have been finding that some unrefined coconut oils are labeled with different smoke points as well.

I tried twice and didn't have any success either. I did learn one thing from the experience. Popcorn can burn without ever popping. I didn't think that could happen.

+slyviewer99 - I've talked to so many people and there have definitely been some mixed results. I have found that the saute function has a higher cook temperature than I previously knew, and it may be too hot for some coconut oils when using the "more" function. The coconut oil I used has a smoke point of 350 degrees Fahrenheit, but there are some that are only labeled as 280 degrees Fahrenheit. The kernels may very likely burn with a smoke point that low. I set to work with an experiment (link below), but definitely still have some more experimenting to do with other variables.

Where the corn is a very simple ingredient, the coconut oil doesn't leave any taste or aroma in the popcorn.... does it? thank you

Hi +Lori Terpstra - the coconut oil definitely gives it a little sweeter taste. I don't notice it if I only eat that popcorn, but when I did the popcorn experiments with different oils, it is definitely sweeter. I don't taste a ton of coconut. My husband doesn't like coconut, but he loves the popcorn :)

Fresh bacon fat makes a great flavor when used to cook popcorn.

Love using coconut oil because it flavors enough that I don't feel like I need butter😮

Hi! It definitely isn't for everyone - I have an air popper and prefer the taste of what I make in the pot. Gotta go with what works best for you :)

Also means the corn was grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides and the nasty like. :-) Yay!

Organic doesn't pop as well though since the hull is thicker.

I never knew there was a difference, but good to know! I've been using it with very few problems luckily. I did some experiments with popcorn on the blog and used regular yellow corn from the grocery store. I"d be curious to do side by side comparisons to see the differences.
