I grew up in Brooklyn Park and migrated to Glen Burnie. Much safer than most of downtown Baltimore. Served as a Baltimore City Fire Department chaplain for 3 years in the early 1990's. Some parts of the city, after dark, resembled war zones. And that was before all of the recent rioting and skyrocketing murder rates. It's sad when your birthplace evolves into something so depressing. When I left for college in 1976, the Inner Harbor had just been built, and the place was much higher thought of. Not any more. Makes me want to cry.
@@pascualsmithvaldes9038 Thank you. I used to be proud to say that I was born/raised in Baltimore. Now, other than following the Ravens and Orioles, I am embarrassed to mention that I'm from Baltimore. It is sad.
Look. I understand not liking the rioting and vandalism aspects of Portland and Seattle, but calling them the worst cities is absolutely asinine. I live in King county (Seattle) and Seattle is rich, clean, and pretty well off... If you named Seattle at least name a neighborhood like you did Kinsington in Philadelphia. (I would say Rainier beach or white center are the worst neighborhoods).... But hands down the worst metropolitan area in Washington is Tacoma and it has been for decades. Less money, worse crime, gangs, bad air quality, it goes on and on, do the research and compare zip codes... You'll see what I'm saying.
Nah. Seattle’s great, but Tacoma’s actually pretty great as well. If you had ever spent any time in Pt Defiance, Ruston, Proctor or Stadium, you might change your tune. South Tacoma is sketchy, but so are parts of Seattle. The worst cities to live in are in Eastern Washington...Yakima? The Tri-cities literally have toxic waste underneath them.
Seattle is pretty cultural for sure but its definitely on the downwards slope. I loved going there a couple of years ago when my girlfriend lived there. Now I'm glad to be back in Vancouver, and that's saying something
My mom used to live in a bad part of Hartford CT when she was in her early 20's. She told me stories about how the radio in her car got stolen so many times that she gave up on having one, crack heads would steal the battery out of her car, her house was broken into multiple times, etc. She bought a hand gun because she felt unsafe. It seems not much has changed in 40 years. On the plus side, she renovated the 3 unit apartment house she owned and sold it when she married my dad.
I remember when New England states were Conservative states and safe to live in, with the exception of Massachusetts, because of the Kennedy family. But JFK would probably be considered a Conservative by today's standards.
The problem is that all our cities suck in different ways. Seattle is just really expensive and a little dirty and absurdly haunted. Tacoma is... Tacoma. I have no idea what’s going on in Yakima but whatever it is it can’t be good Tri Cites only exists cause of nuclear weaponry so I can’t imagine things are going super great out there Kent is a cesspool that infected the 7 towns near it, poor Auburn used to be nice apparently according to my mom, Kent sure ruined that, and Pyuallup, , and Everything east of the mountains is like, “Yeehaw, I’m gonna deny you your most basic human rights” except Ellensburg but that’s cause Ellensburg is populated almost exclusively by lower middle class west side kids who couldn’t afford to go to a bigger college, so of course things are chill there. God I love Ellensburg. It’s so nice there. Most pedestrian friendly town ive ever had the pleasure of inhabiting, great places to eat, everyone is super nice and helpful and there’s always fun things going on.
Most of our towns are terrible in their own way and good in others. I would have probably guessed yakama beacuse of the rampant gang violence but Seattle’s homelessness and drug problems could be why it was placed higher
@@paigey-poo4235 I'm gonna have to disagree hard with your assessment of the east. It is more conservative and some areas/people definitely think that way but it's really nice (why else would so many people from the west be moving over?) We just don't like west siders much. Ellensburg is only the way you described it in the college area, outside of that it's much more yee-haw. It is a bunch of farming after all.
Great place to visit after you get used to tripping over homeless spikes, but you have a better chance of driving through Washington without seeing an evergreen, than finding a finantailly stable person (let alone someone who doesn't hate their life) living in Seattle. Inslee can pour all the funding he wants into Seattle, he can shamelessly ignore and underfund red counties (im literally not a republican, but i can see his blatant disregard for anyone but his voter base) to try and fix the Seattle area, but when you get down to it, you just cant fix Seattle without changing leadership. Just a basic scenario here, to solve homelessness do you A: spend $20 a foot in labor and materials installing spikes in the ground so homeless people cant sit, or god forbid, lie down? B: Arrest homeless people and cart them across the state to a less crowded jail, releasing them in an unfamiliar town? or C: make a logical choice to solve homelessness? If you guessed A and b, you just might be in Seattle's city council. Even their re-homing plan is a joke. Imagine building a few "apartment complex" like buildings, capable of housing 100 people for the same price of building 10 tiny homes (10 is generous considering land costs, dont even get me started on skyrocketing lumber prices). I like the people in Seattle, but the people running it have the collective iq of a single 3rd grader who just downed an entire gallon of glue. I may be surrounded by people deepthroating "MAGA" flags in public, but when i was on minimum wage, i could afford an apartment and food with a few hundred leftover.
Immokalee prolly doesn't show up statistically because no one is tracking how many farmworkers are being paid under the table at far less than minimum wage. Also, if no one is looking for you when you go missing, the gators ain't exactly gonna say whether or not they came across any bodies. In its own way, Orlando is quite possibly one of the worst cities in the world, but I grew up there, so I love it, anyway

Medford is depressing and banal, and yeah, it's got a huge drug problem. But Portland has always had a major drug scene too, and now it's also in serious decline overall, with skyrocketing crime rates, homelessness and a dangerous extremist underground, and it's a much more influential and important place than Medford. As Portland goes, so the state goes. Already many people and businesses are selling and getting out--ironically, this may result in some improvements to Medford and similar blighted smaller towns, unless of course everybody just heads for more appealing coastal spots and trendy towns like Florence, Astoria, Eugene or Bend--or, of course, to Idaho.
My friend, you need to revisit some of the crappiest towns in Oregon, especially Medford and Grants Pass. And those "cities" are just the tip of the Oregon backwaters. Portland is a jewel compared to these places. Still loving your schtick, though. :)
Same with Washington. Even with downtown Riots, Seattle isn't anywhere near as bad as Tacome or Yakima. I get the feeling homeboy doesn't know much about the Northwest.

Ah yeah, the state with the third highest amount of COVID cases. They sure blew New York out of the water a couple months ago, along with Texas and California. It was like the state, who did the lockdowns early, was standing still when they blew right past them. New York's still got over 300k less cases than Florida. I'm not sure on California other than it has the highest population in the country. Not to mention, lockdown or no lockdown, it depends on the people and how they respond. Having COVID parties as some call them don't really help the efforts in containing the virus. I would say New York was the closest of any of the US states in doing the lockdowns right. While they're gaining more cases during the second, third, or whatever spike, New York's still well below the new big three and got passed by Illinois a few days ago. Georgia may follow Illinois and boot them out of the top 5 if this keeps up. If the early front runner ends up getting booted out of the Top 5 by year's end, you know something's wrong. (and they may have done something right)
Lived in Huntington, WV for four years in college, was a member of the cross country team too so i ran all over the city. Hunter Deem I think West Virginia has a lot to offer, in spite of its bad reputation. It's beautiful, it's cheap, and the population is lower in 2020 than it was in 1950. Idk man. I live in Portland and it’s kind of rough. You drive down major highways and see nothing but homeless camps and trash everywhere. Any bit of bushes could be a homeless camp with people methed out. My parents were living in an old part of town and moved because of the gang violence that came into the area. Went by my grandparents old house and the neighborhood had trash everywhere. Then there’s the whole antifa problem. Which isn’t as bad as journalism portrays but is still trashy. It's exceptionally walkable and has good public transit. For a city on the west coast it's relatively affordable. It's not too big, not too small. I love it.
@T U L L Good, way too many people moved to the West Coast in the past 20 years. Average home in Seattle is now $800K but mostly $1M or higher. Why? Because in a normal year, it's a great place to live. But a 1BR to 2 BR apartment goes for $2K - 3K/mo, that is why you see people living in tents on the sidewalks downtown Seattle. They're not tolerated in the suburbs. If there weren't such a shortage of affordable housing, there would be far fewer homeless people. And yes, a lot of the homeless are people who moved here to look for jobs but couldn't find housing because you can't get housing like this without a really decent job. By decent job I mean a household income of $150K/year.
@T U L L I don't live in Seattle. I couldn't find an affordable apartment in Seattle when I first moved here over 30 years ago. I think his choices of Seattle and Portland reflected his sense of how much both have declined under their current feckless leadership--not that they are actually the worst places in their respective states, but that if current trends continue, they are certainly headed in that direction. Ummmm....this list combines small towns with big cities and the 2 can’t really compare for worse virtues. This needed to be 2 or 3 separate lists. Population counts. A bad city is not dictated by protesting. Seattle and Portland would never have made this list in 2019.. just sayin’.
Well due to the lawlessness that is now exploding that was a festering sore, you lost a good police chief, many downtown businesses. Your city people allowed a bunch of thugs to take over and jeprodized innocent people living downtown . Now they're being sued for putting lives at risk, police don't trust them. Your losing Amazon to the city and Boeing is gone. I think the vid improved Seattle's image
I feel people on the level that the protest has come to in Portland and Seattle. I can’t explain why it’s happening at that level. I live in NYC and we have a healthy protesting history with and without conflict. That said, the ONLY reason those cities are listed are the protests. The stats didn’t even matter for Seattle? I think a “podunk” town has no chance of ever having a protest so the 2 can’t be equal. I would never live in a small town because no matter what is going on in Seattle my opportunities are better.
I agree on Portland. We live 270 miles away downstate, and there are a lot of towns in our area that should rank below Portland. My wife and I were in Portland last weekend and never felt threatened; it's only about an eight block area where the protests/riots are happening. As a Baltimorean, I agree.
He's right. It's not Baltimore. The area around Hopkins would disqualify it.

Maybe..but lots of folks will never visit Seattle now because it is run by dirtbags who let good people be hurt by losers for months.
My mom used to live in a bad part of Hartford CT when she was in her early 20's.

Good, way too many people moved to the West Coast in the past 20 years. On a train ride to Chicago from Michigan City, Indiana, I passed by Gary and I vividly remember thinking that it looked hellish.
William Victor I have driven through Gary on the Interstate many times, and I always made certain to have a full tank of gas before I left Chicago. Anyone who gets off the expressway there is begging for trouble.
I'm from Gary u not lying but I love my home lol no doubt
The dictionary was NOT invented in Springfield MA. Dictionaries were available since 2000 BC
You are correct, Nick misspoke. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary was published in Springfield about 200 years ago.

When your city gets a Doller General, is it on its way up or down?
Depends on how many there are
The more dollar generals, the worse it gets. Mayfield Kentucky somehow has 3 dollar generals in it and 2 more 5 minutes outside of town. I swear to god, every time i go there, theres a new one.
Depends on where you are.
@@jonathantanasi2557 Or where you think you are. Cleveland Ohio passed a law to stop any more dollar stores.
@@thepubliceye oh? That’s odd I guess haha
Spokane is worse than Seattle in crime and three times smaller.
Tacoma is worse
Until 2020 crime statistics come out
The OP is jealous.

exactly
10 years ago I was in St. Louis on business - I took my car across the river to see what a destroyed city looks like. I was not disappointed. I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why anyone still lives there.
I always check what the demographic percentages are when I move for work, and pick accordingly.
Theres plenty of cities in washington way worse than seattle. Tacoma and Yakima for example
Bruh Aberdeen and hoquiam take the cake
Everett is also pretty awful lol
I agree totally!
For sure
Auburn is pretty bad too
17:19 So I was on a vacation recently to Charleston, SC and came across a small town called Dillon, SC.
We wondered why there were countless billboards about churches, lmao.
You accidentally bypassed the fact that the education system has absolutely no means for teaching children how to be adults.
Teaching children to be adults...??? Isnt that the job of the parents?
@@debbiestorm3751 yes and no. In theory it should be an absolute yes, but because of how many bad parents there are, it can also be a no.

Back in July I had a stomach operation in a giant hospital located in McKeesport, Pa--the views out the window were so depressing, never been there before. NOW I KNOW WHY. Man did you cover a lot here!! Anyway I'm a big fan of ALL your videos, keep 'em coming :^)
Hey Doug ❤️
I used to work in Elkton, MD in the late 80's. It blew back then too.
I have relatives that live i Gambrills, Md. --- I have never been there.
What is Gambrills like?
How do you do your reseach? You know almost everything. Impressive!
I'm soooo smart
@@NickJohnson Yes. I think you're doing fine.
I think you sir have done a political hit on Seattle Washington and Portland Oregon. There is major corporations in both cities and they're absolutely beautiful.
Yeahhhhh why not choose one of the crazy eastern Oregon or Washington towns?
I live in Portland, if the homeless were gotten rid of and the reputation of being homeless friendly was stopped, then cracked down on extremist groups like antifia which causes other extremists groups like the proud boys to come in and cause violence. And then finally worked on drugs then they would be fantastic cities in gorgeous locations.
@@thedarudecactus3179 You know what antifa is right?
@@thedarudecactus3179 yeah I live kinda near Portland and I’ve been there a few times and I think that it’s very pretty, but the homeless people bother me. It’s kinda sad that they’re homeless but it’s legit so annoying when crazy homeless people go around disturbing others. I think it would be really cool if there was a thing where we gathered up homeless people and got them in like homeless school where they get taken care of and get rid of their addictions. Then homeless people could make a life for themselves and we wouldn’t have to deal with crazies in the street lol.
I think his choices of Seattle and Portland reflected his sense of how much both have declined under their current feckless leadership--not that they are actually the worst places in their respective states, but that if current trends continue, they are certainly headed in that direction. And since both have gotten very expensive, it's way more of a gamble right now to buy a house in Portland or Seattle for which you'll pay a pretty penny, than to just rent a flat in one of WA or OR's less obviously prosperous small towns. At least if you do that you can get out easily without losing a lot of money.
You forgot to mention that Pahrump NV has legalized prostitution in the bordello on its main street. So thats an upside
Say less booking my ticket now
I may visit when I'm done with this president thing
One of my first high school crushes was a guy from pahrump lol

Cbeck out the insane crime stats for Alexandria, Louisiana when you have some free time.
Ok!
alexander the great at it again
Worked with some guys who were assigned to a road crew in East St Louis. The cops told them to leave town and not come back unless they were packing heat.
Yeah i dated a girl from actual St Louis and she said if you ever have to go through east st louis Illinois dont stop drive fast pray because its is like a nightmare there she said soon as you cross the bridge into east st louis you feel a shift in your spirit

Considered moving to Pahrump, as I have a dear friend that lives there. Will send this to her & share on Tw. I see that, in this Nation & every State, the "War on Drugs" was a raging success, like the "War on Terror." Excellent work, Mr. Johnson. Love, from Reno.
Hey John!! I like Reno.

I considered there to get away from rising crime in Las Vegas. Thing is, Pahrump is worse LOL. You wouldn't expect small towns to have worse crime than big cities, but it's true in Pahrump's case. I'll take my chances with the rising crime in Vegas.
As an Ohioan, I’m just glad it wasn’t my city 😂
honestly I've done a lot of traveling throughout ohio and there's places way worse than middletown
My late Great Grandmother lived in Portsmouth, and it’s easily the worst shithole I’ve ever been to - for reference, I live in California
im from Hamilton right next door to Middletown ... over all id say its worse than Middletown.. they both have a horrid Meth issue .. there are a few small area outside Dayton that are far worse for crime
I live near Dayton Ohio in Fairborn Florence av
im sure a lot of people know this but i guess another downside of mayfield is that the town got demolished by a tornado almost 9 months ago
Can you do top 10 worst mayors and governors?.
Pritzker is the worst govenor
@@21shoebills39 In Illinois, Gov. Pritzker is doing a good job as it relates to the virus. His near daily broadcasts remind residents to wear masks, stay six feet apart and stop the social events. I admire how he and Chicago Mayor Lightfoot get mad and threaten restaurants and banquet facilities. He did not ask for this pandemic but he is dealing with it.
Well, you can't ask him to overtly politicize his channel ..

You don't stop in Gary, you roll the stops in Gary.
I was born in the main area in the city of Tucson, you know the city with the volcanic hill that has the big A on it
Edit: I also was expecting Pueblo, CO to be on this list because it has the highest violent crime rate in the state and I live here, but in Pueblo West
Ummmm....this list combines small towns with big cities and the 2 can’t really compare for worse virtues. This needed to be 2 or 3 separate lists. Population counts. A bad city is not dictated by protesting. Seattle and Portland would never have made this list in 2019.. just sayin’.
Just goes to show you how far Seattle & Portland have sank! C'mon, even Minneapolis didn't make this list! THAT says A LOT!
I agree with you GL; on all points that you’ve made. This was an ambitious video for Nick.
But, overall, I liked this video and the others that Nick puts out.
I think Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (the late Hawaiian singer best known for his cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") was from Makaha
Your videos are brilliantly produced, and I enjoy them all! My question though is when these folks leave their state where do they go to start over? Thanks Nick!
I think that first picture of Huntington, WV is actually Harpers Ferry
Does look kinda look like it. That place is 30 min away from me.
That pic was not Huntington, WV
He also spent way less time on Huntingtom than any other town.
Man, WV can't even get its fair share of bad attention.
Huntington is bad off. It all started with the Detroit drug pipeline.
Too bad for Marshall U. A great university, but not many people coming to Huntington to go to school there, understandably.
Not solving Leah Hickman's murder is a negative mark for prospective students to Marshall U.
@@missireason8998 I wish he could have highlighted at least some of its perks. I'm from Huntington and its completely changed the past five years. I absolutely love my town. A lot of focus on cleaning up downtown and implementing local businesses. Does the opioid epidemic need help? yes, but the entire state does. Huntington's downtown area is ten times cleaner than Charleston and Morgantown.
