This is what real journalism looks like. Being on the ground to not just report, but to also PRACTICALLY SHOW the audience what is happening. Mainstream media write reports from newsroom and add "sources". That's it. They are done. Nothing else to expect from them.
"Anonymous sources"… this always killed me when I was teen and read western media. When I became adult, I get that in 99% cases this "sources" just fake :) Moreover, it was a lot of scandals, when it became public how famous journalists for decades wrote fake stories and even got awards for this.

In July I visited St. Petersburg, and the bank there refused to accept two $100 bills. For one of them the reason was that it had a tiny hole only seen with a magnifying glass. But the lady there told me that there is a small exchange business inside a supermarket nearby where they accept everything at almost the same rate :)

It comes out on a surface on the front of the banknote in the shape of a window; there is a multitone & highlight watermark on the right unprinted area; The coat-of-arms of the city of Khabarovsk is printed in optically variable magnetic ink (OVMI) with the effect of a moving bright glossy bar; On the front of the banknote at the edges of unprinted areas there are fine relief line marks; In the bottom part of a field with the latent coloured stripes there is an area with constantly visible coloured stripes (MVC+ effect); the height of figures to the left of the serial number smoothly increases from the left to the right; on the back of the banknote the multi- coloured ornamental stripe has been changed; some elements of the image have magnetic properties; - under UV and IR light the banknote images differ in some aspects from the images of the banknotes of the previous issue. On the front of the note there are two serial numbers that consist of two letters indicating the series followed by seven digits. P.S. I got your sarcastic joke 😊 just wanted to clarify the reason why they are so pecky, and here's why - In Russia we had a lot of counterfeit money made in the 90s-2000s hence, certain countermeasures had to be implemented, it's done in most governments, the $ is the most Forged bill on the planet, had been for a while, which is why the Fed Reserve made a new and improved banknote 😉
Fantastic video and informative! I would like to share my advice and experience as I was in Russia recently. I'm Canadian and was in Russia in September and October and followed a similar method for transferring money and opening up a bank account. Here is what I went through: 1. Withdrew new USD bills in Canada (not at the airport like was said in the video). 2. Exchanged a small amount (1000-2000 roubles) to get a SIM card at the airport. 3. After acquiring the SIM Card, I opened up a bank account. 4. Exchanged the remainder of my USD bills at an exchange, not a bank. I exchanged a total of ~3000 USD to roubles, I didn't use all of that as I will be going back to Russia. Definitely make sure the USD bills are new, and if you transfer over 10,000 USD, make sure to declare at customs, and don't worry - the Russian border guards won't confiscate it.
For step 1 to exchange bills it was ment to get rubles at the airport as a starting point like you did in step 2. They came from the US so they already had USD and didn’t need to do the extra step I think.
In case of over $100,000 customs will ask where you got this money (need official papers from bank, job or something like this) and will not pass without confirmation of legal source of money.
@@rudypieplenbosch6752 usually the rate you get, how many rubles per dollar that you give, is usually not as good if not much lower. Real reporter mentioned that in the video that ideally you will find a good exchange once you are in the country to exchange money there

I would have benefitted from this video before my visit to Russia in August/September because I had a lot of my GBP notes rejected at the very same exchange in St Petersburg as they weren't "mint" condition. Luckily, other places did exchange them but for a less favourable rate. I'm coming back to Russia in December (for my 50th birthday) and I've arranged for delivery of a Tinkoff (T-Bank) card to my hotel when I arrive, to make life a bit easier.

Spaniard here. I went to Russia last month. On the Estonian border I made the mistake of saying I had euros with me. They forced me to change to dollars losing A LOT of money on the process since for every EUR they were giving me back just 0,8 dollars or so (I even took a picture of the exchange rate pannel) After my trip I found it amusing that my worst experience of my "dangerous" trip to Russia was precisely outside Russia. The extra requirements is because they're US persons, if they try opening an account in any other country, they would be hit with the extra requirements, namely the FATCA/W8 forms. A lot of european and singaporean banks just straight up refuse US persons opening an account because of this.
Can confirm. I live in Southeast Asia and all the banks & crypto exchanges will have a specific step that asks if I'm an American. There will also be countless checkboxes to make sure I'm not an American, and reminders that Americans have to provide extra tax documents.
Explains why an international bank not under sanctions (Raiffeisen) would go through the whole paperwork. While a Russian state owned sanctioned bank (Sberbank) would just go "here's your card enjoy!"
My long dead grandparents barely escaped from a Portuguese colony in Africa after Salazar was overthrown. They had to lie flat on the train floor as rebels were shooting at it.
I'm walking this path currently in St Petersburg. I can validate everything shown, for better or worse. The only point I would make is that the extra forms required by the first bank, not Sberbank, are US Tax forms required by the US Govt.

How can this confiscation of euros be even legal? EU is a circus! I visited St Petersburg in Sept from UK. Flew in via Istanbul and carried some GBP cash to exchange. It was accepted OK although I did ensure that I brought mostly 50s and in mint condition. Opening a bank account was very easy too.
Yeah thats definitely stupid on EU part to hurt private persons like that. Like, Putin is not going to buy a new tank if you bring 500 euros on your trip.
Actually so-called "sanctions" are also illegal. Sanctions can accept only security council of UN and it did not it. In any other case "sanctions" are prohibited as "international crime". UN was founded with idea, that nobody can introduce sanctions. If EU only could have non corrupted juridical system and courts, then non of this would work. @am1d The most funny part about tank - -Putin- Russia not buy tanks, it produce them. Unlike most of countries, this one can produce any amount of them even without money at all. Country have full cycle of production, beginning from ore. Moreover, it is state owned industry, there are no profit in it. State paid for tanks to.. self.
@@erikstenviken2652 1. Even is someone do something illegal, it not means you also can violate law. Good advice: never try it in court as own defense line :D 2. You are wrong. Everything is legal: - in UA happened coup (funny fact: de jure it means that country gone and non exist anymore, it need to redeclare self, resign all agreements with whole world). - as result, some territories not recognized violation of constitution and proclaimed own independence. Do you know how UA itself arrived 30 years ago? You can read in their declaration of independence (close to original): “due to coup in capital [Moscow, USSR], for our safety, we declare independence…". Funny fact: 30 years ago it was illegal, illegal by internal laws of USSR, according to UN and according to Helsinki act from 1975 where was declared that borders in Europe can’t be changed (yep, reunion of Germany also violate Helsinki act). Okey, it is past.. but nowadays, according to court of UN and new law which West forced whole world to accept 20 years ago, now "any territory have right for self determination and independence without asking permission or opinion of rest parts of own ex-country". So, arrived new countries. They were attacked by UA and this is already illegal and crime. This countries asked Russia for help and it according to 51 paragraph of UN (right for self/collective defense) came on help. So, it is not Russia started anything, but UA. Russia in this situation, de jure, is defender who protected victims. Additionally: - existed so-called "Minsk agreement" which was confirmed by UN as obligatory for UA (issued special resolution). UA publicly rejected agreement. Moreover, Merkel and Hollande also said, that both used this agreement only to trick everyone, gain time and give weapons to UA (so, they prepared UA as future aggressor, it is international crime). This is direction violation and put both countries in state of international criminals (violation of obligatory resolution and giving weapons). While Russia as one of guaranteer of this agreement have right to use force. - when coup only started, de jure president of UA officially asked Russian for military help. De jure, this request still is actual and legal. - UA officially declared WW2 criminals, prohibited organizations, as own state heroes. This is violation of Nurnberg process, put country in illegal criminal status (funny fact: this is correct for several EU countries also, who did the same). And obligatory of anyone to stop such state. So, as you see, there are 4 juridical reason by which Russia did everything right and according to law. While West (majority, not all) - did whole bunch of violations. Actually looks like they fully canceled any laws for self, so lot they violated already. And that’s why Russia declared that will be new Nurnberg process 2.0 (actually process already going for over year, dozens people already got life sentences).
Video is correct only about transfers with West. With rest countries Russia use own alternative to SWIFT (similar alternatives also developed China and India). To systems which use Russia, China and India already connected several thousands of banks in over 110 countries of world. Now in development some common BRICS system which will be even faster and cheaper (far more cheaper than SWIFT). It is possibly to transfer money in/out Russia to most of those countries without troubles by direct transfers from any bank, it take just few seconds.

To go to an Austrian bank was a bad idea. They may give your information abroad. In any Russian Bank, you open your account in 5 minutes. And no one use cash in Russia, the banks are very efficient and more modern than in western countries.
Americans get screwed over no matter the bank, no matter the country, it's due to US laws about foreign bank accounts. Basically they have to snitch to the IRS about any activity in your account.
I love how Russians always find a way to overcome difficulties. No matter how big the obstacles are, there's no room for complaining or crying, they just keep going 👏🙌
Union Pay is massive in China too. When Trump starts putting tarrifs on Chinese products, all these American companies will lose billions in counter tarrifs by the Chinese. China does not have much to lose in the grand scheme of things because they will just export tarrif feee to other countries in the growing global south. But the established US companies in China will lose hundreds of billions in market value. Apple, McDonald's, Starbucks, Intel, Nvidia, Nike, General Motors and so many more. Germany is already seeing this with their car brands, sales have dropped massively in China, the market where they made over 50% of their profits. The Americans must realise that if you keep demonizing the Chinese, they will eventually just stop buying your products and support their own companies. The US is literally driving Chinese nationalism and the only people it is going to hurt are themselves. I would be really cautious of investing in these American companies, because the chances are that they are going to collapse.
In Poland, too, there is a problem with Old dollars in some exchange offices, the old ones are much cheaper to buy and sometimes they do not even accept them ! I Love Russia ❤

Crypto in my opinion is not reliable way to transfer money. My biggest problem is that Google Pay doesn't work anymore on my phone after tried to tap my phone into Russian terminal, and since I left Russia,Google Pay doesn't work anymore. Russians can easily bypass Western sanctions by opening bank accounts in Armenia ,Belarus,Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan Serbia or other non-sanctioned country and use their money anywhere in the world as they please as they used to so far. My two cents.
In Russia, you had to switch the NFC chip settings in your phone to SberPay and you could pay by touching your phone instead of a Sberbank card. Also T-bank. When you return to the West, you just need to return GooglePay in the settings. In addition, in Russia there is a state СБП (Fast Payment System) its support is mandatory for all Russian banks and is available in bank applications for phones. It allows you to carry out any transactions only by a Russian phone number, provided that the recipient has an account in a Russian bank. And it allows you to pay for purchases in a store by NFC or by QR code, of course.

I went to Russia in May. It was very annoying not being able to use cards and booking accommodation and buying one of the flights (the other airline didn't fly every day) required the help of our Russian colleague's grandfather. The way to exchange rubles freely and easily is by exchanging them outside of Russia first. I was living in Armenia, so that was pretty easy to do. I didn't have to exchange anything during my stay there, and I exchanged the remaining rubles back when I returned to Armenia. Belarus (visited in July) is another surprisingly workable option. Cards work there, although not always and not everywhere. And of course you can exchange rubles there freely and easily. And no further checks from Belarus to Russia as they are both parts of a Union State. But don't travel to Belarus from the EU by land. You will spend 13 hours on the bus when it's really a 2-hour journey. Similarly, Transistria (visited in April) had no issues exchanging currency, although you can't use cards there. You can exchange easily in Transistria or in Moldova proper. It was travelling to Iran that was truly irritating (also in May). You have to have your VPNs up and running before you enter it - even the hotel staff sending me their VPNs didn't work for me. I had to set them up outside first. The Iranian currency is very confusing with 2 names, and you get a big chunk of paper that really is largely worthless. And for the sake of a balanced report: I also went to Ukraine (Odesa) in June. It was very nice and you can use your cards everywhere. They don't have power for much of the day, but businesses all use generators so cards are still accepted. You do need to be a little fearless like me because beyond the constant air sirens day and night, you do hear the anti-missile/drone systems working (I thought it was a fighter jet the first time I heard it), and I heard and saw gunfights and fire off the coast on 2 boats as I was swimming in the Black Sea (lots of people).
I do business in China and Vietnam and mostly live in East Asia however I use online Alipay/Wechat Pay or Zalo Pay to convert money. For example, when I was in Egypt I would find a Chinese owned shop, would send them an online payment via Alipay and they would give me cash. I've been to 15 countries and this is always how I exchange money. Only exception was India which has practically no Chinese or Vietnamese people living nor visiting there.
Banks in Czechia offer similar service, only with cards being the payment method. That being said, I've never in my life seen anyone ctually make a withdrawal like this.

The concept/angle you use in your vid comes as a surprise. I mean, I knew it was going to be about the financial aspect, but you brought it much more back to earth than I imagined. Like... even go as far as "smuggling" some money back and forth, and showing this. Hope you don't get in any trouble for that. :-p The vid was interesting on a cerebral level, as most of your "economic" vids are (I imagine this will go into your playlist of "life in Russia after the sanctions?). I like the formula, here. A little bit of history, a little bit of the "grand scheme of things" which handles the broader aspects and insights, and a little bit of down-to-earth "I'll show you a concrete example how to deal with it". This gives it a fairly broad appeal, because it gives several different multilayered aspects on how to look at the same issue. I hope you'll use the same formula with your tank-based vid. 3:14 Now, now, Kostya! Are you still going on about that? It's almost like it was a trauma... Nah, I can't imagine you really feeling THAT depressed about it! I'm a fairly good judge of character, and you seem to me like a person whom bounces back really quickly! ;-) Besides, as I told you, that Vorkuta vid isn't doing THAT bad. It has 191 K views; not that shabby at all! (I'll say more about that per email, when I got some time). 3:55 You're very welcome! And yes, as said, it's sometimes difficult to know why some vids score much better than others, for no apparent reason. It does not necessarily has to do with the quality of the vid. But overall, you're doing not bad. Even the Dan one has 140K by now. no betterhelp needed! I'll provide that service for free! :-) I also note you brought back the cameo of the Russian Jean Claude Vandamme. I must say... I mean, he looks cool and all, but also a bit...shifty? Shady? He could play in any movie as a gangsta boss, if he puts on a pair of sunglasses... But really... walking around with some dodgy bag full of hard cash... that *looks* darn dubious. (But it's good for extra attention to your vid, though!) Didn't know nor imagine it was THAT hard to change your money in Russia, or that EU money could get confiscated (by the EU, not Russia, if I understand correctly?) That was real interesting. You see, Kostya, that's what makes these kind of vids so compelling; it gives us a totally new look on how things really are in Russia. It's like: where can you actually see this stuff otherwise, as a Westerner? You hardly find anything about that, not even on YT. It's really a great niche you have found there, Kostya. hope this vid does well. Don't know how this will help the EU, though. Since direct flights aren't possible, wouldn't anyone go first to Turkey or some other third country, and THEN enter Russia? and wouldn't you then be able to bring Euro's or dollars with you without any problem? So I don't get this policy at all. What is the point of it, if it's de facto not really doing anything? Also... why, exactly, does the money need to be in SUCH a completely mint and perfect state? That wasn't entirely clear to me neither. I mean, you say it's because Russia doesn't want to stockpile it because it can't use it... but... the Euro, and certainly the Dollar, is a world currency; surely they can always use it, if they buy something abroad ? Anway, nice seeing another vid of you! BTW, planning to do something more about the BRICS summit as well - maybe a short vid one? Or are you already busy with a longer one about something else?

12:50 . The reason is simply because they want to make it as difficult as possible for ordinary people to travel to Russia and contribute to the Russia economy. However, coming from the EU you can still legally bring with you enough euros to cover your basic needs, hotel, restaurant, transportation and other basic expenses. The real problem is that it is not clearly stated what is the minimum legal amount of cash you can bring with you and this is left to the single customs officer's discretion. In Estonia they are quite strict, so you need to be very careful, as the confiscated money will not be returned. If you are caught with cash hidden somewhere, then it is a crime and you can be in real trouble.

Cash is very unpopular in Russia. The most popular NFC payments. When the Visa/MC was banned for Russia, the Russians simply wrapped the service of these cards on their acquiring and extended their service to 5 years. So nothing has changed inside Russia for Visa/MC cardholders. Problems for Russians arose only when leaving Russia. Well... The West has simply limited Russian global tourism. but the Russians launched domestic tourism and discovered how beautiful and diverse their country is. In addition, it strengthens the domestic economy. The stoicism of Russians is boundless. This is a warrior nation.

Here's a description from the Russian central bank website:
Banknotes of 2010 modification have the following main differences:
security fibres of two types are embedded in the paper (two- coloured and one-coloured grey ones);
a wide security thread is embedded in the paper. It comes out on a surface on the front of the banknote in the shape of a window;
there is a multitone & highlight watermark on the right unprinted area;
The coat-of-arms of the city of Khabarovsk is printed in optically variable magnetic ink (OVMI) with the effect of a moving bright glossy bar;
On the front of the banknote at the edges of unprinted areas there are fine relief line marks;
In the bottom part of a field with the latent coloured stripes there is an area with constantly visible coloured stripes (MVC+ effect);
the height of figures to the left of the serial number smoothly increases from the left to the right;
on the back of the banknote the multi- coloured ornamental stripe has been changed;
some elements of the image have magnetic properties;
- under UV and IR light the banknote images differ in some aspects from the images of the banknotes of the previous issue.

Here is what I went through:
In case of over $100,000 customs will ask where you got this money (need official papers from bank, job or something like this) and will not pass without confirmation of legal source of money.
why wouldn't you keep the money in usd? as its gonna go down lol

@am1d
The most funny part about tank - -Putin- Russia not buy tanks, it produce them.

Good advice: never try it in court as own defense line :D
2. You are wrong. Everything is legal:
- in UA happened coup (funny fact: de jure it means that country gone and non exist anymore, it need to redeclare self, resign all agreements with whole world).
Additionally:
- existed so-called "Minsk agreement" which was confirmed by UN as obligatory for UA (issued special resolution).
As always, a very interesting video.

No wonder the Germans and the Austrians went to the Austrian owned Raifeissen bank
it is a LOCAL bank. It is not austrian bank. By russian law nobody can open foreign bank in Russia. Just a local company and bank on it.

In Poland, too, there is a problem with Old dollars in some exchange offices, the old ones are much cheaper to buy and sometimes they do not even accept them ! I Love Russia ❤
Whats up with that? Easier to make forgery, hence they dont risk it?
In Egypt the same problem.
When you're as large (and mostly self sufficient) as Russia, and your #1 trading partner also happens to be the #1 producer in the world, sanctions dont matter much 😂
Inside the country, euros or dollars are not needed, after the 90s no one even counts in dollars)
Only that no country is selfsufficent. And yes. Sanctions are working.
Being their trading partner and being their puppet-minion are kinda different things, don't you think? just remember how vladdy was kissing Xi's hands when he came to moscow.. China is using russia however they want and they must obey, cause it's not like anyone really wants to trade with them

It is not Cold War, it is hot war.
Just today Russia intercepted another group of soldiers which tried cross border. On bodies found: flag of Canada, Bible in Polish, one guy had tattoo of division of US special forces.
I'm at EU citizen who crossed land border from Estonia to Russia last month.
The Estonian custom guy asked me:
"How much money you carry with you"?
I responded immediately :"1000€ cash".
He let me through at once without any additional hassle .
To be honest, the custom guy did not ask me what citizenship I hold.
He had a bright smile and wonderful day, maybe that played the part .

Using currency as a weapon really is a dumb move. You just give other countries a strong incentive to abandon it. So, not just your sanction become useless, but you also invite others to follow suit.
It is a "feel good" thing, I guess.
87% of worldwide transactions are in the USD, banks are terrified of being cut off from it.
It's a propaganda thing that completely backfires and you end up sanctioning yourself.

🎉😂
Banks in Czechia offer similar service, only with cards being the payment method. That being said, I've never in my life seen anyone ctually make a withdrawal like this.
Not even Indians wanna live in India

Accepting mint notes is actually quite common when traveling, it isnt just Russia that does this. I would always take my notes to the bank and exchange them for new ones and keep them in a special folder that wouldnt bend them so that there was no chance of them being rejected.
This happened to me in Thailand and Cambodia. It is unclear why though. I heard it’s a condition country of origin has decided. Probably to stop money laundering. Somehow.
To limit the chance of fake/false money.
@@JakeSDN fake/false money is new and crispy. Can be true but someone didn’t think it through.
@@TheBooban With money that is not perfect, you can say I spilled coffee on it, but you are trying to hide an imperfection in the fake/false money printing process. The U.S. Treasury will accept real money in any condition in exchange for new money. You can cut it to pieces, you can burn most of it, as long as they can verify it is real money they will return new money to you. Imperfect money allows for excuses.
@@JakeSDN this doesn’t explain why in the US, money can have all sorts of damage but overseas they won’t accept the slightest imperfections even if the money can still be verified as real. Ok, Kostya, I'm gonna try one more time... because my posts always seem to get deleted by YT algorithm, and I don't know why. this is what I said, about a week ago already:
Bit later than expected, but here I go!
The concept/angle you use in your vid comes as a surprise. I mean, I
knew it was going to be about the financial aspect, but you brought it
much more back to earth than I imagined. Like... even go as far as
"smuggling" some money back and forth, and showing this. Hope you
don't get in any trouble for that. :-p The vid was interesting on a
cerebral level, as most of your "economic" vids are (I imagine this
will go into your playlist of "life in Russia after the sanctions?). I
like the formula, here. A little bit of history, a little bit of the
"grand scheme of things" which handles the broader aspects and
insights, and a little bit of down-to-earth "I'll show you a concrete
example how to deal with it". This gives it a fairly broad appeal,
because it gives several different multilayered aspects on how to look
at the same issue. I hope you'll use the same formula with your
tank-based vid.
3:14 Now, now, Kostya! Are you still going on about that? It's almost
like it was a trauma... Nah, I can't imagine you really feeling THAT
depressed about it! I'm a fairly good judge of character, and you seem
to me like a person whom bounces back really quickly! ;-) Besides, as
I told you, that Vorkuta vid isn't doing THAT bad. It has 191 K views;
not that shabby at all! (I'll say more about that per email, when I
got some time).
3:55 You're very welcome!
And yes, as said, it's sometimes difficult to know why some vids score
much better than others, for no apparent reason. It does not
necessarily has to do with the quality of the vid. But overall, you're
doing not bad. Even the Dan one has 140K by now. no betterhelp needed!
I'll provide that service for free! :-)
I also note you brought back the cameo of the Russian Jean Claude
Vandamme. I must say... I mean, he looks cool and all, but also a
bit...shifty? Shady? He could play in any movie as a gangsta boss, if
he puts on a pair of sunglasses... But really... walking around with
some dodgy bag full of hard cash... that *looks* darn dubious. (But
it's good for extra attention to your vid, though!)
Didn't know nor imagine it was THAT hard to change your money in
Russia, or that EU money could get confiscated (by the EU, not Russia,
if I understand correctly?) That was real interesting. You see,
Kostya, that's what makes these kind of vids so compelling; it gives
us a totally new look on how things really are in Russia. It's like:
where can you actually see this stuff otherwise, as a Westerner? You
hardly find anything about that, not even on YT. It's really a great
niche you have found there, Kostya. hope this vid does well.
Don't know how this will help the EU, though. Since direct flights
aren't possible, wouldn't anyone go first to Turkey or some other
third country, and THEN enter Russia? and wouldn't you then be able to
bring Euro's or dollars with you without any problem? So I don't get
this policy at all. What is the point of it, if it's de facto not
really doing anything?
Also... why, exactly, does the money need to be in SUCH a completely
mint and perfect state? That wasn't entirely clear to me neither. I
mean, you say it's because Russia doesn't want to stockpile it because
it can't use it... but... the Euro, and certainly the Dollar, is a
world currency; surely they can always use it, if they buy something
abroad ?
Anway, nice seeing another vid of you! BTW, planning to do something more
about the BRICS summit as well - maybe a short vid one? Or are you already
busy with a longer one about something else?
