    Tati, Cetearyl Alcohol (in Laneige toner) is not bad. There are 2 kinds of alcohol and most of them are bad, but there are few fatty alcohols that are actually good for your skin. Recently I became obsessed with analyzing ingredients too and I found out that sometimes organic brands (and web sites about natural skincare) make big deal out of nothing just to sell their "clean" stuff. I of course agree with you that some ingredients are just unneccesary (like fragrance) and some are just there as fillers that do nothing for your skin. I'm at this point now too, where I do so much research and come to the conclusion that the more you dive in, the more complicated it gets. But I'm on board with you a 100%! We should all educate ourselves and make better choices. There is so much on the market, so why not we chose the best stuff, right?

    I love your channel, but as a chemistry major, hearing you talk about chemical groups as if they all interact or make a molecule do the same thing shows your lack of actual knowledge of the field. A lot of people use the chemistry lingo, but don’t understand what generalizations they are actually making. It’s perfectly fine and great if you say “hey, I don’t like this because it didn’t work for me,” but please be careful about telling people things are bad if you’re using such general terminology. Saying all alcohols are drying and all silicones are pore clogging is very short sited. These terms are used as descriptors of molecules with certain groups (ie alcohols) on them, so there are hundreds of thousands of molecules that do drastically different things all that can be classified as alcohols. I love hearing information about things from you, but if you’re going to make a more opinionated video about skincare, please label it as such as opposed to implying you know the literature on the topic. I don’t mean to hate; I just hear these terms thrown out a lot incorrectly and felt the need to say something.

    First off, this drag queen loves your videos.
    With that said, I work for a major skin care company in Sweden, with the developing laboratory right in our office. That means I have close and frequent contact with our chemists and product developers, some of them with over 20 years experience of developing skin care.
    There are a lot of misinformation, or rather, not scientifically based stements in this video.
    For example parabens. There are no scientific studies that prove or even state that methyl and ethyl parabens (which are the two parabens that may be used according to EU regulations) may be dangerous. The fear of parabens originated after a study showed that mice, who were forced to ingest copious amounts of propyl parabens showed signs of possible organ growth. Skin care companies know that parabens are safe, the only reason for making paraben free products is because consumer wants it based on misinformation.
    The same goes for “natural” versus “artificial”. A molecule is a molecule. The body doesn’t know the difference. In fact, there’s a higher probability of impurities and allergens in a “natural ingredient...
    Also, I wish people would stop saying “ingredient” when talking of a substance they believe is safe, and saying “chemical” when talking about something they think is bad or dangerous. Every ingredient in a skin care product is a chemical. Even water, when used as an ingredient, is a chemical by classification.
    Still, love your channel, but I think you really ought to talk to a chemist about all this for more a nuanced view on ingredients and their properties.

      A molecule isn't just a molecule, no. There are reasons why synthetic ingredients are bad, as it has been scientifically proven that they mess up people's hormones and potentially can be triggers to cancer cells. So no, it's not just "all the same".

    Tati... Preservatives in those products are *absolutely necessary* , otherwise you wouldn't be able to use anything which has extracts, oils, proteins, or basically anything that can rot, or even water . You'd have to store it in the fridge for 1 week (with good tides) and use disposable gloves to apply it, otherwise the bacteria would spread inside like crazy. And when there's a lot of preservatives, that means there are a few ingredients that require different preservatives for each, because not every preservative works for every ingredient

      Yzma I think her concern was too many in one product. Oil is a preservative. She doesn’t have a problem with that obviously.

    Honestly Tati when I heard you say the Laura Marcier contained “hydrogenated vegetable oil” I knew that couldn’t be right. I used to make my own herbal lotions and creams from scratch. If you’re referring to the Olus Oil (yes I went and looked at the site and the list of ingredients) Olus oil/ vegetable oil is of vegetable origin and is expeller pressed, meaning no chemicals were used in obtaining it. It’s high in triglycerides and fatty acids that are wonderful for your skin and it’s a natural replacement for petroleum which is a petroleum based thickening agent. And lastly the glycine soja oil is soybean derived and high in antioxidants. Not only is that good for your skin, but it helps the product from oxidizing and going rancid. Essentially a natural preservative in a way.

If you guys want to know more check her out but always remember that they are recommendations and each skin type is different so before purchasing anything do your own research see a doctor and then proceed from there. There are actually very few ingredients for which benefits to the skin when applied topically are scientifically substantiated by peer reviewed research: retinol, aha and bha, benzoyl peroxide for acne, a variety of emollients... my point is that the natural skincare phenomenon makes unsubstantiated claims about the effective of a litany of natural ingredients. Natural does not mean good, and in fact so many natural skin care ingredients are irritating, while many “unnatural chemicals” have good research backing their effectiveness.

    I agree with a lot of the comments below, especially on the misinformation about alcohol and silicone. Tati implies that she doesn't understand why silicone is a skincare product since it's in her primers, but her saying that also implies that she doesn't understand the different forms and purpose of silicone. Silicone is not just one ingredient that has one purpose. In fact, silicone is a general term for a polymer group. Depending on how the backbone chains of silicone are interlinked, you get various different forms. Tati also states that she doesn't understand why alcohol is in a hydrating skincare product, implying that alcohol is a drying ingredient. Alcohol is, again, a very general term for a group of chemicals and depending on the composition of the compounds, different forms of alcohols have different purposes. Yes, the most well-known alcohol, ethanol, is a drying ingredient but there are also fatty alcohols which are hydrating.
    PLEASE do more thorough research using scientific databases. The information given out in a regular consumer setting is often incomplete or misleading and this is the case even at famous skincare websites who take the most superficial layer of information they can find and use those to justifying their warnings.

    To be honest, any ingredient can be sensitizing to the skin. It just depends on the person. For example, there is so much hate on parabens, but there is no proven research that it is actually bad. Another example is alcohol. Some may feel that it could be drying for their skin, but some do not because there are fatty alcohols; alcohols can even help other ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin. Even silicones can be good occlusives that help lock in moisture. There are two sides of the same coin. Please correct me if I am wrong. I used to be that person that over analyzes the ingredients of skincare products; now, like others say in the comments, I focus more on the formulation. If I take into account the EWG rating, whether it is "clean skincare", etc. I might as well throw away half my skincare. If I like the skincare products in terms of it feels nice and I am not irritated, I will continue using it, even if there is fragrance in it. Honestly, I think "clean skincare" is partially a marketing ploy ☕. I really recommend Gothamista and Liah Yoo's channels to learn more about skincare. Of course, take ingredients and anyone's recommendations with a grain of salt. Everyone's skin is different. What works for one person may not work for the other. Let me know your opinions. 😃

    • @jackielopez9739
      @jackielopez9739 5 років тому +13

      Yes!!! Extacly. I get reactions from even "clean" ingredients because the truth is everyone will react differently to different things like medications for instance. You can be allergic to one thing and to other people it may the cure they were looking for. That's why recommendations are just that and should be researched before making any decision!

She has so much misinformation here and has been using so much pseudoscience lately instead of research based its ridiculous! A person should only work with their esthetician and dermatologist to get advice, ask questions, get suggestions, be educated, understand what everything is and how it works, have skincare and treatments tailored to their skin type, issues and needs, etc. They should not be taking the advice or even listening to a youtuber who doesn't know what they're talking about at all! I have a Chemistry degree and I wish people would really learn the chemistry behind the ingredients more than just being told “this is bad” and believing it. Half the stuff we are made to believe is bad really isn’t. This just makes me want to get my masters in cosmetics chemistry more and more. Half of the ingredients you think are good could have have been made (or synthesized rather) by using HCl or NaOH in it (which can BURN the skin off instantly) but doesn’t because of the ingredients they are mixed with. A few days or hours of research isn’t enough to tell people it’s bad or shouldn’t be used. Plus everyone’s body chemistry is different. A so called “good ingredient” could break me out but not the next person. That’s a horrible indication of the product being a good one or not.

    Dimethicone (silicones) are not problematic, unless your skin has a reaction to them of course. Also, preservatives in skincare are actually very necessary. Without them, your skincare products would go bad after like a week or two. Everyone interested in skincare should watch Caroline Hirons and Stephanie Nicol here on UA-cam.

      Dimethocone isn't great for oily skin though. The problem with dimethicone in skin care products is that it can actually prevent your skin from absorbing moisture and can cause an imbalance of water/oil in your skin leading to excess oil. I try to avoid it as much as possible. Also, it may make skin LOOK healthy and FEEL healthy but that smoothness doesn't actually mean your skin IS healthy.

      I'm learning more about what preservatives are necessary & I agree that it's important to keep product stable. As for silicones in skincare - I don't get it 🤷🏻‍♀️ from what I've gathered silicones don't provide any beautifying benefit for your skin (they can actually block some absorption of ingredients you want absorbed that do help the skin) They can congest the skin & dehydrate it... that's enough for me to say "farewell"
      to using them in my skincare routine... I'm already seeing a difference in my pores clogging up - It's a start. Please know I'm so open to this conversation & viewing all side of it ❤️ Thanks for watching 💋

    Hi Tati, It’s a massive struggle for cosmetic scientists and formulation scientists with the ‘bad’ stigma of preservatives. Products NEED preservatives in them, they are essential for the stability of all products. This bad image that is being portrayed of preservatives and parabens are giving consumers the wrong information. The increased usage of ‘natural preservatives’ massively increases the risk of sensitivity to the skin because they are not as effective (as a generalised statement) this leads to bacteria growing in the product which is obviously so bad for the skin. Please stop fuelling the bad stigma towards preservatives because it’s really important that people know products need them in for stability and the safety of the consumer. Thank you for your video x

      You might want to ask this of publisher's of peer reviewed journals as well. then Just ask them to stop publishing so many studies that conclude many common preservatives used in personal care products have a high irritancy potential, because it makes your work so much more difficult
      There are many cosmetic ingredients, such as preservatives and fragrances, known to elicit adverse effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the side-effects of cosmetic preservatives, by evaluating objective and subjective skin irritation. The method comprised of 2 parts. In part 1, we tried to compare 24-hr patch test results with the sensory irritation potential of several preservatives. In part 2, skin cumulative irritation test for 21 days and sensory irritation test were performed to compare various combinations of preservatives in 4 types of formulations. Our data showed that methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, phenoxyethanol (PE) and chlorphenesin (CPN) have similar objective skin irritation potential at the minimal inhibitory concentration of each preservative, but CPN has higher potential than other preservatives in subjective irritation. Sensory irritation of preservatives changed according to formulation type, and PE combined with CPN highly increased irritation. There was correlation between antimicrobial activity and skin objective irritation but not sensory irritation. Influence on skin sensory irritation varies with the combination of preservatives. Therefore, for the development of new preservatives and cosmetics, it is important to evaluate skin sensory irritation of preservatives used in cosmetic products according to the type of formulations.

    Tati, a great account you should follow is Dr Dray. She is a dermatologist who posts UA-cam videos on all things related to skincare, ingredients, and evidence. If you look through her video library she has a specific video devoted to research and recommendations for every ingredient like silicones, parabens, AHA’s, SPF’s, etc. I love her account because she is super credible with her medical degree background and has evidence to back every claim she makes related to skincare recommendations. I think you’d find her content interesting.
    Also, have you heard of the cosmetics brand “beauty counter”? It’s one of those multi-level marketing companies, but their whole deal is safer cosmetics. They go as far as choosing ingredients based on where the raw materials are resourced from. If this is a new interest of yours in exploring the science of beauty products, you could maybe get your hands on the Beauty Counter product line and do a full face review on the makeup. Just a thought!
    I love your videos. I watch every day!

But I feel the need to say: if you don't know how to do your research on Pubmed or similar (or don't even know that it exists), and can't base your recommendations on EXTENSIVE SCIENTIFIC studies (which may be hard to understand for people that hasn't studied any science or medicine), then you shoudn't be making videos like this, especially with such large following. So I am a biochemist and a pharmacologist. I react to essential oils and so called natural fragrances. I say so called because everything is synthesized or extracted in a lab. I, along with other researchers and MDs. MD PhDs understand that we need to look at a molecule's structure because that is what dictates it's function and the increased possibility of an adverse effect. However, there are no molecules out there that do not illicit an adverse reaction in someone!!! Meaning there is NOTHING that is HYPOALLERGENIC out there!!!! Silicones fill out wrinkles, smooth out the epidermal surface and act as occlusives. I have extremely dry skin so they are extremely important in my skincare. Tati, you need to get informed: there is a genetic basis to inflammation NOT just the environment i.e. what one eats and applies to one's skin!!! I eat healthy but I still developed psoriasis and eczema when I was in my teens. I am now in my late thirties and I also have psoriatic arthritis. My mom has the same problems, my dad has psoriasis and other members on both sides of the family struggle with systemic inflammatory conditions. I think this is important for you to know.

      I wish they would change the term hypoallergenic to "most common allergenic ingredients is not contained in this product". I think before we demonize certain ingredients, we need to find actual empirical research that supports the idea that a particular ingredient is bad for skin. However, I personally prefer products without fragrance as I am allergic to most and what is the point anyway.

    Why doesn’t silicone in a lotion make sense? It’s called an “emulsion” which means it’s non-water soluble stuff distributed in water, the non-water soluble stuff is usually oil or silicone. Silicone doesn’t block active ingredients as much as oils do and it still provides some moisturizing effect.

    • @kristinehansen.
      @kristinehansen. 5 років тому

      Silicone does make active ingredients less absorbed by the skin. Carrier oils with small molecules will help active ingredients absorb better and faster. And silicones can block pores and cause acne or black heads. Silicones isn't really good for your skin.

    I was a little hesitant to watch this, because I tend to look at the science of a formulation, rather than the hype and fear tactics from Brand marketing, and I (mistakenly) thought this would be more of the latter. I have to say, that for the most part, I agreed with what you were saying. One thing to always remember, EVERYTHING has the potential of being sensitizing. For example, Aloe Vera is supposed to be a soothing ingredient, but has been found to cause reactions for some people...so, like you said, you have to see what works for you. Another thing, preservatives aren’t bad. Remember, they’re there to keep your products from going bad, and most preservatives (parabens included) have been shown to be effective and safe...in other words, there is no conclusive evidence that shows parabens to be harmful to your health. As for “clean” skincare, I find it very annoying when brands use misinformation to sell a product - they’re banking on people’s mistrust of synthetic ingredients, which to me is wrong. I would rather have parabens in my skincare, than Essential Oils, which have been shown to cause more sensitivity for people...even in going so far as CAUSING skin to become more sensitized over time. I think skincare is moving towards the integration of natural and synthetic ingredients, and I’m all for it!

      Thank you! Also, not all alcohol ingredients are bad and they're not equally bad among the bad ones depending on where they fall in the formula and amount. There's so much nuance in ingredients and how they play together and interact with your skin! Idk... As someone who has studied chemistry extensively, there's really no such thing as "chemical free". The origin of an ingredient doesn't always matter. Preservatives evolved over time to protect the content from degradation.
    That being said, we should always be conscious of what we put on our skin. It's the largest organ... I believe less is more. But don't demonize "chemicals" lol

Parabens are necessary because they help preserve the product so that bacteria does not grow in the skin care item and then you rub a bacteria culture all over your face. Mineral oil is very moisturizing and is a good skin care product, especially for removing make up as a oil cleansing product. Consult a dermatologist if you were concerned about a certain component in your skin care. Nevertheless, many people fear items and skin care products that are actually not dangerous or that do not have any medical literature to substantiate concern. I am glad that you are starting to pay attention to items in your skin care Tati! I never really did until recently and now I am glad that I do. You definitely want to avoid fragrance and skin care products as well. Dimethicone is great for the skin. It really locks in moisture. Ask your dermatologist. They will tell you so too. Also, alcohol isn't necessarily bad in skincare. It depends on the type of alcohol and how much is in the product. You need alcohols to make the product go on smoothly.

      Sara Haile that’s crazy! Every good doctor knows that too much NSAIDs (ibuprofen) can be very dangerous, especially for the GI system. It can eat a hole in your GI lining (stomach). I’m sorry! It’s upsetting when you think you can trust your doctor 100% but it’s important to also do your research outside of of your doctor’s advice. But this can be difficult because people outside the medical field don’t always have access to good legit medical literature without paying a lot of money.

      Morgan Stansell paraben is bad maybe not for your skin but for your health in general and yes there’s no study to back it up but professional know it. It increase your chance of getting cancer and I got that information from multiple oncologists. It’s severely suspected for a reason.

    Alcohol isn't always a bad thing. It often has a synergistic effect with ingredients we want in our skin care. Some of those ingredients wouldn't be able to do their job if it weren't for the alcohol to help penetrate the lipid layer, allow the ingredients in and then reap the benefits. Figure out where it is on the list and go from there....but don't discount it all together. Someone you might find beneficial in your journey is Penn Smith (here on You Tube). I wouldn't say her focus is clean skin care, but you can learn a lot about ingredients and how they work. It's been an eye opener for me. And given that she is an Advanced Esthetician, I'm inclined to believe her.

      Kelly Smith so true, in a sunscreen for your face you might want to look out for one with alcohol because sunscreen is often very oily and sticky. But if it is a toner or cleanser, you don't need alcohol at the top of the list, because here it can dry out your skin.

    Ive been into my skincare since i was a teenager and have learned alot. First i ignore packaging especially “cute” packaging, i stay away from scented skincare(i dont need perfume on my face) and i always ALWAYS read the ingredients before spending $60 on a cream. Ive always heard the first 5 ingredients is whats in the majority of the product. Also, if theres an ingredient you cant pronounce dont write it off as bad, google it. And also not all alcohols in skincare are bad alcohols, its important to educate yourself on these things. Im sure 90% of people thought ALL alcohols in skincare were bad.

    I'm kind of confused by your elimination criteria here. You say you know for sure that coconut oil breaks you out, yet you also had good results with both the PTR water drench cleanser and the Laneige one, both of which contain coconut derivatives (which is not always the same as pure coconut oil!). Why eliminate these products just based on the fact that you realized after the fact that they contained coconut derivatives and fragrance if these ingredients never had any adverse effect on your skin before? Deciding your skincare needs based on a "Clean at Sephora" seal or any other marketing terms allows companies to charge their customers exorbitant prices because they remove certain ingredients from their formulations. Isn't that crazy that they make you pay more for fewer ingredients? The funniest or I guess the saddest part is that drugstore brands that sell skincare to a much larger audience for a much more decent price don't need this kind of niche marketing to sell their products, yet their skincare basically has the same ingredients as these extremely high end "clean" brands that just come in fancier packaging.
    At the end of the day, skincare is an experience and if you want some fragrance in your skincare, all power to you! If you're especially sensitive (your skin becomes especially sensitized to small amounts of fragrance if you use a lot of active ingredients in your routine), then maybe fragrance is something you should see if you need to avoid. The overall formulation of a product is what's important rather than just picking and choosing what ingredients to be afraid of on the back of the bottle or jar. I feel like you would know this intuitively, Tati, since this is what your whole supplement brand is based on...that the formulation of the entire product matters more so than the existence or absence of individual ingredients. I wish you would give more information about *why* you say certain ingredients are supposedly bad for your skin and not just name a couple to avoid. You never claimed to be an expert on this topic as you said very clearly at the beginning of this video, but I feel like you should have done more research on this topic before telling your audience what products you should avoid with very little reason to back up why they should do so.

    • @fearlesskitten2475
      @fearlesskitten2475 5 років тому +4

      I can't speak for Tati but coconut oil is incredibly high on the comedogenic scale. That it is in so many beauty products is astounding.
      I believe her researching and removing products from her routines is based on a breast cancer scare she had earlier this year. If she wants to remove products with certain ingredients what's the issue?

    • @DD34594
      @DD34594 5 років тому +6

      I think Tati eliminated these ingredients because she decided that even though these have no noticeable negative effects on her skin they're not necessarily good either even if in small amounts. The same concept as with sugar, in very small amounts there is no negative noticeable effect, but it does not ultimately mean that it is okay or good. Hence for example getting rid of fragrance. I do think the title fuels into the idea though that these products are bad just because it includes fragrance for example, so I can see your view. Also, just because you see the clean seal, does not mean you are "paying more for less" ingredients. Many people find that sulphates parabens etc. irritating and can cause breakouts, which is they need the "clean" label skincare. Furthermore, because these ingredients are being taken out such as dimethicone to seal moisture or parabens to preserve the product they have to find alternative ingredients to have the cream function; by adding alternative ingredient that will work together to perform it's intended way. Alternate ingredients and or research costs can be reasons for higher pricing. It's not as simple as taking a regular cream and just getting rid of the dimethicone for eg. and done. Also "clean" products come in a wide range of prices so I'm sure that yes some of these clean products are expensive but there are also afforable options.

      Even if a person does not have a reaction right now from fragrance, there is still a large chance it will cause reaction in the future. (words of Dr Dray dermatologist on UA-cam) check her out for some real info.

    • @pinyrose
      @pinyrose 5 років тому +4

      @@chelseahoggard3085 Haha I had her in mind when I was thinking about Tati's thoughts on fragrance as well! To be fair though, with even the way Dr. Dray addresses fragrance, she always mentions that it has the "potential" to irritate the skin and it doesn't *need* to be in your skincare, which is true if you're looking for a very bare bones, non irritating routine. For some people, the scent of their products is part of the experience of applying their skincare, so although it's not a necessity, it's also not necessarily harmful to everyone!
      The sad thing about "fragrance" as written on a product's ingredients list is that it's just an umbrella term for a loooong list of fragrant molecules FDA approved to be in cosmetics/beauty products. It's good to avoid for those with particularly sensitive skin, but could also be non irritating to that person based on whatever fragrant molecules are actually being used.

I personally find it the best way to learn :)

    Tati, I love you. I really do. But I feel like this video is more opinionated rather than based on facts. I really admire your passion to educate people about what’s good/bad for your skin, but this video came across more as a “what products didn’t work on me” and not an educational video about skincare. To do a video like this should be based on scientific research and facts.
    When you did the video explaining Halo and the ingredients in it, you mentioned an ingredient that is “known” to be bad but you said that it doesn’t matter because the amount of it is too small and is “irrelevant” and people shouldn’t worry about it. So why couldn’t that be the case for the products mentioned in this video ? These products are only for external use, but Halo is something you actually digest. Isn’t that more concerning?
    Again, I love you. I’m not trying to hate. I absolutely believe in you and everything that you do, but I just felt the need to call you out on this video. Please don’t hate me
