Can I FIX a ROLLS ROYCE - PART 6 - Headlight & Windscreen Washers Not Working

  • PART 6 of this New Series. In this episode I attempt to fix the windscreen and headlight washers which are not working. Are they fixable?
    My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
    This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
    This is PART 6 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

    If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    I am loving this series. Your ability to diagnose a problem always amazes me. How you figured the T valve was faulty was brilliant, if you didn't figure that out first, you would have wasted so much time trying to fix working nozzles.

  • @brendonelton

    The small widget you noticed in line for the washers located in the scuttle is a non return valve, if this was missing, screen wash would take considerably longer to reach the windscreen from the reservoir. Also, when the engine is running, you will see a greater return voltage to the battery from the alternator, usually 13v - 14v, and an amperage range of 65a - 100a, they usually match the battery that is required for the alternator to charge, all outputs are specific to each vehicle engine size etc, check the manual.

    This is turning into a brilliant series, even feature length episodes now!! Although I don't own a car myself, I used to help my dad fix many of ours in the past, we used to try to do as much as we could ourselves, rather than take them to garages.
    With every video here, I don't know whether to feel more sorry for the poor Rolls or for Vince! I'd love to be there to give him a hand, almost every bit of that car has been already 'got at' or badly bodged by previous owners! Great fix on the washer system, I would suggest Vince obtains a set of ramps to lift the front up, it'll make it a lot easier to work on (& film) future jobs under the bumper area or below the engine.

    It's very possible the previous owners put on the wrong size wiper arms. Cars like this sometimes use two different arm sized and thus 2 different blades. Don't know Rolls very well, but something you might look into. Also, the do make hose adapters to adapt one size into another size. Just a barbed fitting with two ends of different sizes. That's usually how those kind of tubing incompatibilities are handled.

    • @michaelthomas3646
      @michaelthomas3646 2 роки тому +5

      or as simple as not having the wiper arm on the correct spline, causing stress on the wiper arm spring causing the kickback, and because the wiper arm on the passenger side is too low, at the kickback point then, then at the highest point it doesn't allow the drivers wiper arm to fully extend.

    • @benofbrown
      @benofbrown 2 роки тому +1

      These cars indeed have two different blades, I bought new ones for my Turbo R last year. They're still available from Bentley and weren't that expensive really. The driver's side is pantograph as well, the passenger side is not.

    • @michaelthomas3646
      @michaelthomas3646 2 роки тому +3

      @@spamspace6878 be aware this comment could be correct, but if you got this problem, it can be caused by the wiper arm set too low on the passenger side if the wiper doesn't go straight on the drivers side. it is a common fault with vehicles if the wiper arm isn't fitted correctly on exactly the right spline, because the spring in the wiper arm is under tension which the spring doesn't want to be under tension so it will cause the kick back like you seen in Vince's video. it is an easy fix of remove the wiper arm, run the motor a few times, and then replace the wiper arm on the correct spline while the motor for the wiper arms is in the home position. if you move the motor while trying to fit the wiper arm the same thing will happen again.

    The larger size tube on the headlight washer system might be because the pressure needs to be higher than the pressure that goes to the windshield. On the windshield you have the wipers that cleans the windows, aided by the washerfluid, but as you have no wipers on the headlights, the muck needs to be cleaned off the headlight with the pressure of the water alone. The pump for the headlights also looks a lot beefier than the other. That also may be why the ejectors (or whatever they are called) are shaped the way they are. I once had a Ford that had a headlight washer system. It got engaged when the light was turned on and the windshield washer system was used. But it used a lot of washerfluid and there was quite a mist of fluid when engaged at speed. I can only say that those who were driving behind me wasn't in doubt that I used them 😊

    On Amazon search for 10mm one way flow valve. You should find some single ones. Just get those and either put one in and then a normal t-piece on the output or put in a normal t-piece and put a one way flow valve after it on each output of the T. Cut the pipe to each jet in half and put them in the middle, or if you are just going to use one, cut the pipe in half feeding the T and fit the one way flow between the output of the tank and the input of the T Piece.

    Really enjoying the fixing of the Rolls Royce. I've come in a bit late, but working through them. Re-Current in cars: Surely the current is limited only by the device being operated. They will only draw what they need, which naturally varies. Eg, small lamps only draw a few milliamps, whereas the starter motor can draw 600A. All off the same battery. Limiting the current on your bench supply, is only that, it limits what can be drawn, not what it really wants.

    Hey Vince, As for the wiper sweep/coverage (58:39), my first thought was the blades were the wrong size but i see they both almost touch the top of the wind screen so that can't be it. I wonder if swapping the arms left and right would help. RR apparently had different arms for right hand drive (RHD) and left hand drive cars (LHD), each with the articulating arm on the drivers side (where you have yours). Perhaps you have a set of LHD arms on your RHD car. I think the reason they put the articulated arm on the drivers side was so there was a broader sweep in front of the driver, but if you have the LHD arms on your RHD car then it would make sense that the sweep does not cover the windshield well. The left arm that you have stops when completely vertical, which would make it ideal for the right hand side. The right articulating arm that you have has a much broader sweep, making it better for your left hand side. Give it a shot to see if it makes it better or worse!
    Perhaps there are part numbers on your arms...
    Right Wiper Arm - RHD part UD73699
    Left side Wiper Arm - RHD part UD73701
    Right Wiper Arm - LHD part UD73702
    Left Wiper Arm - LHD part UD73700

    I once had to replace a windshield washer injector for 2001 Nissan Micra I once had, built in UK by the way :) Driver's side injector didn't give much fluid to the windshield, tried to blow it clean, tried to clean it even with needle, but no luck. Didn't find aftermarket part, so had to buy it from Nissan dealership for 14 Euros back in 2008.
    Here in Finland, in the 80's and early 90's, headlights washers were mandatory in all cars and they were checked in MOT inspections. My first car (1982 Mazda 323, had it in the 90's) started leaking from right side headlight washer at some point, but luckily it had separate fluid tank for headlights and windshield / rear window, so didn't bother fixing it :P Just filled the container for MOT and it passed.
    Yesterday fixed my bicycle, as it had annoying squeeky sound from front brakes and 21-gears not working properly. 1st gear didn't want to stay on, and 3rd - 4th gear randomly changed back and forth themselves while driving. Got them working by adjusting them with trial and error method :D
    Front brakes were easy, just bending a bit the return spring, so it got stronger, returning the brake pads further from the wheel, but gears took more time to get working correctly.
    Also, noticed the handle bar screw was loose and it had already started to move from the correct position, so straightened it and tightened the screw, so all is good now :)

    Vince, it looks like the drivers wiper has a sort of cam / cantilever system on it (the extra shaft on that side) maybe the mechanism is a bit stuck?

    Vince, please don't waste your time with wd40 for stuck bolts. It works, but not nearly as well as a designated penetration spray. My favorite is Liquid Wrench brand. Love your channel!

    Just add a single inline pressured non-return valve before the T. Keep the rest as original. Sorted!

    That was so interesting Vince. Funny thing is if the original owner had bunged up the headlight washers instead of the windscreen washers he could have stopped the leak and got an honest MOT in one move 😂. Hope you feel better soon!

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  2 роки тому +2

      Hahaha, I will probably do all this work over the next year to 'improve' it and it will fail the MOT 😂😂😂 I think the leak only went to the level of the headlights so the original owner may have not even noticed it. I wonder if one jet is still working on the windscreen if it will still pass the MOT? Maybe on very old cars they only had one central jet. Not sure. Cheers Jon 👍👍👍

    Hi Vince, on the front bumper part you should first use boiling water and try to bend it back carefully. I once removed a dent in my rear bumper with that trick maybe it is also helping with your problem.

    I really enjoyed it. I think putting the microscopic valve in probably increased the pressure by 5 times, I wouldn't want to be near that water jet

    Making good progress with the car now, glad the washers are now working ok. Imagine how much labour it would cost to fault find and sort that issue out. Mr Hubnut would call that a 'Triangle Of Doom' at the end.

    That is some serious perseverance to get that washer pump going again. If you are continuing to work outside, and old carpet off cut makes the concrete a bit more agreeable to lie on. Maybe the wiper arms have been replaced with non-standard parts, might be worth looking for the original and comparing the shape of them and blade length to those fitted.

    Great work Vince, you spare us all from ever buying a second hand RR 👍 Concerning the wipers... perhaps the windscreen is the wrong size ?
